RESUMO

Mercury cycling in coastal metropolitan areas on the west coast of India becomes complex due to the combined effects of both intensive domestic anthropogenic emissions and marine air masses. The present study is based on yearlong data of continuous measurements of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentration concurrent with meteorological parameters and some air pollutants at a coastal urban site in Mumbai, on the west coast of India, for the first time. The concentration of GEM was found in a range between 2.2 and 12.3 ng/m3, with a mean of 3.1 ± 1.1 ng/m3, which was significantly higher than the continental background values in the Northern Hemisphere (~ 1.5 ng/m3). Unlike particulates, GEM starts increasing post-winter to peak during the monsoon and decrease towards winter. July had the highest concentration of GEM followed by October, and a minimum in January. GEM exhibited a distinct diurnal cycle, mainly with a broad peak in the early morning, a narrow one by nightfall, and a minimum in the afternoon. The peaks and their timing suggest the origin of urban mobility and the start of local activities. A positive correlation between SO2, PM2.5, temperature, relative humidity, and GEM indicates that emissions from local industrial plants in the Mumbai coastal area. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) confirm this fact. Monthly back trajectory analysis showed that air mass flows are predominantly from the Arabian Sea and local human activities. Assessment of human health risks by USEPA model reveals that the hazardous quotient, HQ < 1, implies negligible carcinogenic risk. GEM observations in Mumbai during the study period are below the World Health Organization's (WHO) safe limit (200 ng/m3) for long-term inhalation.

RESUMO

Cardiac echinococcosis is a rare and severe manifestation of hydatid disease. It is caused by parasitic infestation by the Echinococcus species and can lead to life-threatening complications. Diagnosis is difficult due to nonspecific symptoms, but echocardiography is a highly sensitive diagnostic method. Albendazole treatment is effective in managing these cysts and can be an alternative to surgery. A patient with multiple cardiac hydatid cysts was successfully treated with albendazole, highlighting the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent life-threatening complications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: The tribal populations are vulnerable to mental health issues owing to various reasons. However, limited research has been conducted to assess depression and related determinants among tribal adults aged ≥45 yr (45 years and older). The present study aimed to assess the prevalence and sociodemographic and health determinants of depressive symptoms among the scheduled tribe (ST) population aged ≥45 yr in India. METHODS: The present study analyzed the Wave I data of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India conducted between April 2017 to December 2018. The outcome variables in the present study were self-reported depressive symptoms. Two internationally recognised tools, the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D) and Composite International Diagnostic Interview-Short Form (CIDI-SF), were used to obtain the data, however, only the CES-D data are utilized in this study. The present study focused on 12,215 ST individuals aged ≥45 yr from whom information about depressive symptoms was collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Nearly 25 per cent ST population aged 45 yr or older experienced depressive symptoms. The likelihood of experiencing depressive symptoms among the ST population aged ≥45 yr was negatively associated with 10 or more years of education and living with children and others and positively associated with experiencing multiple morbidity conditions. INTERPRETATION CONCLUSIONS: Given the substantial burden of depression among the adult ST population, the present study lays emphasis on raising the awareness about depressive symptoms and strengthen the availability of mental health services among the ST community through intensive campaigns and engagement of ST individuals along with other key stakeholders. Higher education, living with spouse and children and a physically active lifestyle can play a crucial role in limiting depressive symptoms among the tribal adults (≥45 yr). It is paramount to regularly screen depressive symptoms and conduct more microlevel studies to evaluate socioeconomic and health determinants of depressive symptoms among ST communities living in different geographic regions.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Carbapenem resistant Gram negative bacteria have emerged as priority pathogens in recent years. Cefiderocol is a siderophore cephalosporin licensed in 2019 with claimed activity against ESBL producing and carbapenem resistant bacteria with much better safety margin compared to colistin. The present study was undertaken to assess the in vitro activity of cefiderocol against carbapenem resistant clinical isolates, compared to some select antimicrobial agents including colistin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-seven isolates of Gram negative bacteria belonging to the three commonly encountered groups of Enterobacterales, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp were included. Susceptibility testing for Cefiderocol was determined by Kirby-Bauer's disk diffusion technique as per CLSI guidelines using Cefiderocol disc (30 µg). Sensitivity for the other agents were determined using automated system. RESULTS: Of the 77 isolates, 58.4% belonged to Enterobacterales, followed by P.aeruginosa (27.3%) and Acinetobacter spp (14.3%). Three out of 45 Enterobacterales isolates, one out of 21 P.aeruginosa and none in the Acinetobacter group were found resistant to cefiderocol. All the isolates were intermediate sensitive (I) for colistin since the "susceptible" interpretive category has been eliminated. Tigecycline showed good activity (80.0% sensitive) against Enterobacterales followed by aztreonam (71.1% sensitive). CONCLUSION: Cefiderocol is not yet available in India and our study is possibly the second one from this country demonstrating in vitro resistance to this important antimicrobial agent. However, with a relatively better safety profile compared to colistin, cefiderocol can be an important agent to combat these highly resistant pathogens.

RESUMO

Stenosis in the anastomotic site or venous limb of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the most frequent cause of AVF failure. Percutaneous angioplasty with a standard or high-pressure balloon is the first-line treatment for AVF stenosis due to its higher technical success rate (90%) and lower complication rate (4%). Almost 20% of stenosis cases are resistant or undilatable by regular-pressure balloon angioplasty due to fibrosis, leading to technical failure or restenosis. Alternative therapies, such as atherectomy devices or cutting balloons, are expensive and difficult to obtain in low-income developing countries. We successfully treated resistant AVF stenosis with a coronary OPN-NC® ultra-high-pressure balloon and produced a good angiographic result with technical success. Coronary hardware is easily available and relatively cheaper compared to dedicated peripheral balloons or devices in our country due to reuse, which can be a boon in such type of cases. According to the standard hospital protocol, Cathlab hardware was reused.

RESUMO

At room temperature, the title salt, C7H10NO+·Cl-, is ortho-rhom-bic, space group Pbca with Z' = 1, as previously reported [Zhao (2009 ▸). Acta Cryst. E65, o2378]. Between 250 and 200 K, there is a solid-state phase transition to a twinned monoclinic P21/c structure with Z' = 2. We report the high temperature structure at 250 K and the low-temperature structure at 100 K. In the low-temperature structure, the -NH3 hydrogen atoms are ordered and this group has a different orientation in each independent mol-ecule, in keeping with optimizing N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonding, some of which are bifurcated: these hydrogen bonds have N⋯Cl distances in the range 3.1201 (8)-3.4047 (8) Å. In the single cation of the high-temperature structure, the NH hydrogen atoms are disordered into the average of the two low-temperature positions and the N⋯Cl hydrogen bond distances are in the range 3.1570 (15)-3.3323 (18) Å. At both temperatures, the meth-oxy group is nearly coplanar with the rest of the mol-ecule, with the C-C-O-C torsion angles being -7.0 (2)° at 250 K and -6.94 (12) and -9.35 (12)° at 100 K. In the extended ortho-rhom-bic structure, (001) hydrogen-bonded sheets occur; in the monoclinic structure, the sheets propagate in the (010) plane.

RESUMO

The rising temperatures and levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are anticipated to have a significant impact on the productivity of agricultural crops. Although, the individual effects of elevated CO2 and temperature have been extensively studied in C3 and C4 crops, there remains a scarcity of research investigating their interactive effects specifically on maize hybrids. The impact of elevated temperature and its interaction with elevated CO2 on phenology, physiology, biomass, and grain yield of maize hybrids was assessed in a field experiment using Free Air Temperature Elevation (FATE) facility. The results showed that elevated temperature (eT) increased the anthesis silking interval (ASI), while the presence of elevated CO2 along with elevated temperature (eT + eCO2) mitigated this effect. The differential expression were observed between hybrids depending on their genetic potential. Furthermore, the net photosynthetic rate (Anet), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (Tr) of hybrids decreased under elevated temperature but eT + eCO2 condition helped in reverting its impact to some extent. In term of leaf composition, the highest level of total soluble sugars (TSS) and starch was observed under eT + eCO2 conditions, possibly due to improved Anet in the presence of elevated eCO2. The negative impact of eT was also evident through increased proline and MDA content, but eT + eCO2 ameliorated the adverse effect of eT. The biomass and grain yield also responded similarly, among the hybrids 900M GOLD recorded superior performance for grain yield at eT condition exceeding 35 °C. On the other hand, DHM117 experienced a significant reduction in grain yield under eT, but performed better under eT + eCO2 due to its improved physiological response to eCO2. The study indicated that elevated levels of carbon dioxide can actually mitigate the detrimental effects of elevated temperature on maize crop. This positive impact on maize crop can be attributed to an enhanced physiological performance in the presence of eCO2 which enables the plants to maintain satisfactory yield levels despite the challenging environmental conditions.

RESUMO

Turbostratic multilayer graphene presents a unique system with a large number of twisted interfaces with variable twist angles. In this work, we have systematically studied the laser excitation energy dependence of the Raman modes of turbostratic graphene. The combination of 4 different laser energies is shown to be important to reveal the twist angles ranging from 5∘to 30∘present at the same lateral position of the sample. Rotational or R-modes and D-like modes are observed, which directly arise from additional momentum transfer from the potential of corresponding superlattices. Trends in their dispersion and intensity are discussed. The resonant window for laser excitation indicates lowered positions of the van Hove singularities. Furthermore, an anomalous broadening factor of 0.17-0.265 eV is estimated for the resonance window when compared to the literature on isolated twisted bilayer graphene. Interestingly, a weak dependence of the R-modes on the laser wavelength is also observed. Finally, the dispersion of the 2D modes is also presented.

RESUMO

Distyrylbenzenes (DSBs) are well-known for their strong multicolour fluorescence. Fluorescence tuning of DSB via further functionalization/arylation, on the other hand, is uncommon. This paper reports a Pd-catalysed direct arylation approach for introducing different aryl groups onto fluorobenzene-containing DSB moiety (7) in high yields (67-72 %). The versatile methodology allows the substitution of neutral [tolyl (1)], electron-deficient [p-formyl benzene (2), p-acetyl benzene (3), p-nitrobenzene (4)] and electron-rich [carbazole (5), triphenylamine (6)] aryl groups. The electron-deficient aryls render mono-substitution, while the electron-rich counterparts promote di-substitution. The compounds (1-6) show blue, green, and yellow fluorescence in both the solution and solid states; the fluorescence quantum yields reach >98 % and the peak maxima span from 425 to 560 nm. The mono-carbazole DSB (5) exhibit white light emission (WLM) in polar solvents (acetone, DMF, CH3CN, DMSO and NMP) with very high fluorescence quantum yields (φf) of 60-80 %. For WLM, such high efficiency (φf) is somewhat uncommon. Moreover, visible-to-NIR reversible electrochromism is demonstrated by the TPA-integrated DSB (6). The colour of 6 changes from pristine light yellow to orange, and the absorption maxima shifts from 372 to 1500 nm when a positive potential of 1.0 V vs Ag/Ag+ is applied. Moreover, the system shows high colouration efficiency in the NIR region with fast switching speeds for colouration and decolouration as fast as 0.98 s and 1.05 s.

RESUMO

Deep learning is a highly significant technology in clinical treatment and diagnostics nowadays. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a new idea in deep learning that is being used in the area of computer vision. The COVID-19 detection is the subject of our medical study. Researchers attempted to increase the detection accuracy but at the cost of high model complexity. In this paper, we desire to achieve better accuracy with little training space and time so that this model easily deployed in edge devices. In this paper, a new CNN design is proposed that has three stages: pre-processing, which removes the black padding on the side initially; convolution, which employs filter banks; and feature extraction, which makes use of deep convolutional layers with skip connections. In order to train the model, chest X-ray images are partitioned into three sets: learning(0.7), validation(0.1), and testing(0.2). The models are then evaluated using the test and training data. The LMNet, CoroNet, CVDNet, and Deep GRU-CNN models are the other four models used in the same experiment. The propose model achieved 99.47% & 98.91% accuracy on training and testing respectively. Additionally, it achieved 97.54%, 98.19%, 99.49%, and 97.86% scores for precision, recall, specificity, and f1-score respectively. The proposed model obtained nearly equivalent accuracy and other similar metrics when compared with other models but greatly reduced the model complexity. Moreover, it is found that proposed model is less prone to over fitting as compared to other models.

RESUMO

The intensive agriculture practices improved the crop productivity but escalated energy inputs (EI) and carbon foot print (CF) which contributes to global warming. Hence designing productive, profitable crop management practices under different production systems with low environmental impact (EI and CF) is the need of the hour. To identify the practices, quantification of baseline emissions and the major sources of emissions are required. Indian agriculture has diversified crops and production systems but there is dearth of information on both EI and CF of these production systems and crops. Hence the present study was an attempt to find hot spots and identify suitable strategies with high productivity, energy use efficiency (EUE) and carbon use efficiency (CUE). Energy and carbon balance of castor, cotton, chickpea, groundnut, maize, rice (both rainfed and irrigated), wheat, sugarcane (only irrigated), pigeon pea, soybean, sorghum, pearl millet (only rainfed) in different production systems was assessed. Field specific data on different crop management practices as well as grain and biomass yields were considered. Rainfed production systems had lower EI and CF than irrigated system. The nonrenewable sources of energy like fertilizer (64 %), irrigation (78 %), diesel fuel (75 %) and electricity (67 %) are the major source of energy input. Rainfed crops recorded higher CUE over irrigated condition. Adoption of technologies like efficient irrigation strategies (micro irrigation), enhancing fertilizer use efficiency (site specific nutrient management or slow release fertilizer), conservation agriculture (conservation or reduced tillage) rice cultivation methods (SRI or Direct seeded rice) were the mitigation strategies. These results will help policy makers and stake holders in adoption of suitable strategies for sustainable intensification.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence of osteonecrosis of the jaw in a pediatric population with systemic therapeutic exposure to an antiresorptive, anti-angiogenic, and/or immunomodulating drug (ARAID), and in particular in the subgroup of patients who had undergone invasive dental treatment. This was a retrospective cohort study performed at a single center. The investigation included pediatric patients who had undergone systemic therapy with ARAIDs and who began receiving ARAID therapy at ≤16 years of age. The study included 482 patients who received ARAIDs between January 2011 and January 2021. The most common medication class was bisphosphonates (45.0%), followed by mTOR inhibitors (30.1%) and anti-angiogenics (17.8%). No diagnosis of osteonecrosis of the jaw was observed. From this population, 26 patients were noted to have undergone invasive dental treatment. The duration from treatment to the invasive procedure ranged from 0 to 5.9 years. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw is extremely rare among the pediatric population - much less common when compared to the adult population. Prospective cohort studies and continued evaluation will help determine the incidence and prevalence of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in pediatric patients.

RESUMO

Yb0.4Co4Sb12, being a well-studied system, has shown notably high thermoelectric performance due to the Yb filler atom-driven large concentration of charge carriers and lower value of thermal conductivity. In this work, the thermoelectric performance of YbzCo4-xTixSb12 (where z = 0, x = 0 and z = 0.4, x = 0, 0.04, and 0.08) upon Ti doping prepared by the melt-quenched-annealing followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) has been studied in the temperature range of 300-700 K. Addition of Yb and doping of donor Ti at the Co site simultaneously increase the electrical conductivity to 1453.5 S/cm at 300 K, which ultimately boosts the power factor as high as ∼4.3 mW/(m·K2) at 675 K in Yb0.4Co3.96Ti0.04Sb12. Adversely, a significant reduction in thermal conductivity is obtained from ∼7.69 W/(m·K) (Co4Sb12) to ∼3.50 W/(m·K) (Yb0.4Co3.96Ti0.04Sb12) at ∼300 K. As a result, the maximum zT is achieved as ∼0.85 at 623 K with high hardness of 584 HV for the composition of Yb0.4Co3.96Ti0.04Sb12, which demonstrates it to be an efficient material suitable for intermediate temperature thermoelectric applications.

RESUMO

Time series modeling is a way to predict future values by examining temporal data. The present study analyzes the monthly mean soil moisture data at various depths: surface, profile, and root soil moisture, spanning from 1981 to 2022. The analysis employs two distinct approaches: the statistical seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) and a deep learning long short-term memory (LSTM). The models are trained on a data set, covering the period from 1981 to 2021, acquired from the agricultural site at Andhra Loyola College in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India. Subsequently, the data from 2021 to 2022 is reserved for testing purposes. The study provides comprehensive insights into the design of both SARIMA and LSTM models, along with an evaluation of their performance using established error metrics such as the model mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean squared error (RMSE). In the context of surface soil moisture prediction, the LSTM model demonstrates superior performance compared to SARIMA. Specifically, LSTM achieves a notably lower MAPE of 0.0615 in contrast to SARIMA's 0.1541, a reduced MAE of 0.0316 compared to 0.0871, and a diminished RMSE of 0.0412 as opposed to 0.1021. This pattern of enhanced accuracy persists across profile and root soil moisture predictions, further establishing LSTM's supremacy in predictive capability across diverse soil moisture levels.

RESUMO

The study of the oxidation of various proteins necessitates scrutiny of the amino acid sequence. Since me-thio-nine (Met) and tyrosine (Tyr) are easily oxidized, peptides that contain these amino acids are frequently studied using a variety of oxidation methods, including, but not limited to, pulse radiolysis, electrochemical oxidation, and laser flash photolysis. To date, the oxidation of the Met-Tyr dipeptide is not fully understood. Several investigators have proposed a mechanism of intra-molecular electron transfer between the sulfide radical of Met and the Tyr residue. Our elucidation of the structure and absolute configuration of l-Met-l-Tyr monohydrate, C14H20N2O4S·H2O (systematic name: (2S)-2-{[(2S)-2-amino-4-methyl-sulfanyl-butano-yl]amino}-3-(4-hy-droxy-phen-yl)propanoic acid monohydrate) is presented herein and provides information about the zwitterionic nature of the dipeptide. We suspect that the zwitterionic state of the dipeptide and its inter-action within the solvent medium may play a major role in the oxidation of the dipeptide. In the crystal, all the potential donor atoms inter-act via strong N-H⋯O, C-H⋯O, O-H⋯S, and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

RESUMO

The title compound, C12H15NO3, crystallizes with Z' = 2 in space group Pca21 with the two independent mol-ecules having almost the same conformation, differing mostly at the end of the butanamide chain. A local inversion center near 1/8, 3/4, z relates the two mol-ecules, as is common for structures in this space group with Z' = 2. The mol-ecule crystallizes as the keto tautomer, and the ß-diketone moieties are twisted out of planarity, with O-C⋯C-O pseudo torsion angles of -74.4 (5) and -83.9 (5)°. The N-H group of each independent mol-ecule donates an inter-molecular hydrogen bond to an amide carbonyl oxygen atom by positive or negative translations along the b axis, thus forming anti-parallel chains propagating in the [010] direction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities are vulnerable because of the many challenges they face attitudinal, physical, and financial. The National Policy for Persons with Disabilities (2006) recognizes that Persons with Disabilities are valuable human resources for the country and seeks to create an environment that provides equal opportunities, and protection of their rights, and full. There are limited studies on health care burden due to disabilities of various types. AIM: The present study examines the socioeconomic and state-wise differences in the prevalence of disabilities and related household financial burden in India. METHODS: Data for this study was obtained from the National Sample Survey (NSS), 76th round Persons with Disabilities in India Survey 2018. The survey covered a sample of 1,18,152 households, 5,76,569 individuals, of which 1,06,894 of had any disability. This study performed descriptive statistics, and bivariate estimates. RESULTS: The finding of the analysis showed that prevalence of disability of any kind was 22 persons per 1000. Around, one-fifth (20.32%) of the household's monthly consumption expenditure was spent on out-of-pocket expenditure for disability. More than half (57.1%) of the households were pushed to catastrophic health expenditure due to one of the members being disabled. Almost one-fifth (19.1%) of the households who were above the poverty line before one of members was treated for disability were pushed below the poverty line after the expenditure of the treatment and average percentage shortfall in income from the poverty line was 11.0 percent due to disability treatment care expenditure. CONCLUSION: The study provides an insight on the socioeconomic differentials in out-of-pocket expenditure, catastrophic expenditure for treatment of any kind of disability. To attain SDG goal 3 that advocates healthy life and promote well-being for all at all ages, there is a need to recognize the disadvantaged and due to disability.
