RESUMO

Dengue is a viral infection which has become a serious problem in recent years. It is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. The present study is a prospective, hospital-based, observational study done from August 2014 to October 2014. The objective of our study was to consider whether dengue infection can be suspected based on haematological and biochemical findings. The study included 100 patients positive for dengue infection. Complete hemogram, transaminases for liver injury, blood urea and serum creatinine levels for renal assessment were performed for these patients. The most common haematological findings were thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, an increase in the mixed cell fraction of the leucocytes and the presence of reactive lymphocytes. Biochemical parameters like the aminotranferases, blood urea and serum creatinine levels were significantly raised. Hence, a platelet count of <100,000 cells/µl, leucopenia of <4000 cells/µl and aspartate aminotransferase levels of >82.2 U/L can be considered as predictors of dengue infection.

RESUMO

Intestinal lymphangiectasia is a rare benign disease characterised by focal or diffuse dilation of the mucosal, submucosal and subserosal lymphatics. Clinically, the patients may present with protein losing enteropathy (PLE), hypoproteinemic oedema, chylous ascites, pleural effusion, acute appendicitis and intestinal obstruction.

RESUMO

A young adult in her third decade presented with a 2-week history of catching left upper abdominal pain and was detected to have a cystic lesion occupying almost the entire spleen. Laparoscopic total splenectomy was carried out, and the cyst wall revealed a true mesothelial cyst with no squamous metaplasia. The various aspects of mesothelial cysts, including immunophenotyping and treatment modalities, are briefly discussed.

RESUMO

Intestinal neuronal dysplasia (IND) is a well-documented but controversial entity defined as a congenital malformation of gastrointestinal innervation caused by dysplastic embryonal development of the enteric nervous system. Mainly described as a colonic disorder mimicking Hirschsprung's disease in the paediatric population, involvement of the ileum is rare. We report a case of fatal IND of the small intestine in a 58-year-old man presenting with a recent onset of features of small intestinal obstruction. IND has been described as a cause of colonic pseudo-obstruction and chronic constipation in adults, but to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of IND of the ileum occurring in an adult causing fatal small bowel obstruction. A Medline search yielded no cases of ileal involvement with IND in adults.
