RESUMO

In this paper, we shall assume that the ambient manifold is a pseudo-Riemannian space form N t m + 1 ( c ) of dimension m + 1 and index t ( m ≥ 2 and 1 ≤ t ≤ m ). We shall study hypersurfaces M t ' m which are polyharmonic of order r (briefly, r-harmonic), where r ≥ 3 and either t ' = t or t ' = t - 1 . Let A denote the shape operator of M t ' m . Under the assumptions that M t ' m is CMC and Tr A 2 is a constant, we shall obtain the general condition which determines that M t ' m is r-harmonic. As a first application, we shall deduce the existence of several new families of proper r-harmonic hypersurfaces with diagonalizable shape operator, and we shall also obtain some results in the direction that our examples are the only possible ones provided that certain assumptions on the principal curvatures hold. Next, we focus on the study of isoparametric hypersurfaces whose shape operator is non-diagonalizable and also in this context we shall prove the existence of some new examples of proper r-harmonic hypersurfaces ( r ≥ 3 ). Finally, we shall obtain the complete classification of proper r-harmonic isoparametric pseudo-Riemannian surfaces into a three-dimensional Lorentz space form.

RESUMO

Waiting lists issue is one of the main matters of every public health system. The aim of this study is to design a pathway in the Local public health authority 4 in Turin (Piedmont Region, Italy) as far as waiting lists management of outpatient service is concerned between 2004 and 2006. This study emphasizes a new approaching methodology based on: a) clearly defined criteria of clinic priorities to accessing public health facilities; b) working groups composed by a representing member of the District, one or more medical and general practitioners representing different equipe; c) monitoring priority criteria as objectives to both medical practitioners and equipe in order to assess them at the end of the year Results are encouraging because equipe correctly applied defined priority criteria so that they reached objectives improving their performance during considered period (66.3% of conformity with "U", "B" and "D" codes in 2006 and 84.2% with all codes, improving the value of 81.3% in the past year).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of spontaneous tumors in pet animals has been estimated in a few European and North American veterinary cancer registries with dissimilar methodologies and variable reference populations. OBJECTIVES: The Animal Tumor Registry (ATR) of Genoa, Italy, was established in 1985 with the aim of estimating the occurrence of spontaneous tumors in dogs. METHODS: Six thousand seven hundred and forty-three tumor biopsy specimens were received from local veterinarians in the Municipality of Genoa between 1985 and 2002. Three thousand and three hundred and three (48.9%) biopsy specimen samples were diagnosed as cancer and were coded according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD-9). RESULTS: Mammary cancer was the most frequently diagnosed cancer in female dogs, accounting for 70% of all cancer cases. Incidence of all cancers was 99.3 per 100,000 dog-years (95% CI: 93.6-105.1) in male dogs and 272.1 (95% CI: 260.7-283.6) in female dogs. The highest incidence rates were detected for mammary cancer (IR = 191.8, 95% CI: 182.2-201.4) and for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (IR = 22.9, 95% CI: 19.7-26.5) in bitches and for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (IR = 19.9, 95% CI: 17.4-22.7) and skin cancer (IR = 19.1, 95% CI: 16.6-21.8) in male dogs. All cancer IR increased with age ranging between 23.7 (95% CI: 18.4-30.1) and 763.2 (95% CI: 700.4-830.1) in bitches and between 16.5 (95% CI: 12.8-21.1) and 237.6 (95% CI: 209.1-269.0) in male dogs aged < or =3 years and >9-11 years. CONCLUSION: This study summarizes the work done by the ATR of Genoa, Italy, between 1985 and 2002. All cancer incidence was 3 times higher in female than in male dogs, a difference explained by the high rate of mammary cancer observed in bitches. Because a biopsy specimen was required to make a cancer diagnosis, cancer rates for internal organs cancers, such as respiratory and digestive tract cancers may have been underestimated in the study population.

RESUMO

Canine mammary tumours are generally treated with surgery alone, despite the fact that 50% of them are malignant and many will eventually lead to recurrence or metastases. A prospective clinical trial in which dogs with aggressive mammary carcinoma of clinical stages IV and V were treated with surgical excision (n = 9) or with surgery and adjuvant weekly gemcitabine (n = 10) for at least four cycles was conducted. Gemcitabine was given as an intravenous infusion at the dose of 800 mg m(-2). Aim of the study was to explore potential beneficial effects of gemcitabine on time to local recurrence (TTR), time to distant metastases (TTM) and overall survival (OS) in canine patients with operated mammary tumours bearing high risk for locoregional failure and distant metastases. Also, factors associated with OS, including neutering status, body weight, age, clinical stage at presentation, tumour size, histological grade and, in dogs receiving chemotherapy, the number of gemcitabine treatments, were investigated. Finally, acute toxicities related to chemotherapy and quality of life were assessed in dogs receiving gemcitabine. Dogs treated with surgery alone or surgery followed by gemcitabine had no difference in TTR, TTM or OS (P > 0.05). In the group of dogs receiving adjuvant chemotherapy, the number of gemcitabine treatments was positively correlated with OS (P = 0.017). Gemcitabine treatment was well tolerated, with no dogs experiencing clinically relevant haematological or gastrointestinal toxicity. Despite being safe at the present dose, gemcitabine chemotherapy as an adjunct treatment to surgical excision may not be recommended in dogs with aggressive mammary carcinoma.

RESUMO

We describe the expression of pStat3-ser727 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 phosphorylated on serine 727) in normal, hyperplastic and neoplastic feline mammary gland tissue assessed by immunohistochemistry in 56 cats. The samples included 4 normal mammary non-lactating tissues, 13 hyperplastic lesions (9 lobular and 4 fibroepithelial) and 39 tumours (6 benign and 33 carcinomas). For immunohistochemistry, tissue sections were incubated with anti-pStat3-ser727 monoclonal antibodies and visualized with EnVision-DAB polymer. pStat3-ser727 positivity was quantified in a semi-quantitative manner, differentiating cytoplasmic and nuclear localization. Intense anti-pStat3-ser727 immunoreactivity was detected in epithelial neoplastic cells and in the fibro-component in two fibroepithelial hyperplastic lesions. The immunostaining was dot-like in the cytoplasm and homogeneous in the nuclei in both benign and malignant lesions. Statistically significant relations were observed between nuclear expression of pStat3-ser727 and the pleomorphism score (p = 0.006), mitotic activity (p < 0.0001), and histological grade (p < 0.0001). In contrast, no significant correlations were observed for cytoplasmic pStat3-ser727. These findings add new and interesting information on the potential role of the phosphorylated form of Stat3 in malignant lesions.

RESUMO

The expression of Stat3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3) in normal and neoplastic feline mammary gland tissue was assessed by immunohistochemistry in 72 cats. The samples included 3 normal nonlactating mammary tissues, 17 hyperplastic lesions (11 lobular and 6 fibroepithelial) and 52 neoplasms (5 benign and 47 malignant). For immunohistochemistry, tissue sections were incubated with anti-Stat3 monoclonal antibody and visualized with EnVision-DAB polymer. Stat3 positivity was assessed in a semiquantitative manner. Normal mammary tissue showed occasional cytoplasmic and nuclear positivity, although the number of positive cells was lower than in the hyperplastic specimens. In neoplastic tissue, high numbers of neoplastic cells with a moderate to intense cytoplasmic and nuclear positivity were observed. Selected variations in the staining pattern correlated with malignancy. Moreover, a positive association was seen between the histological grade and the Stat3 score (p < 0.0001; correlation coefficient 0.750). A linear regression model showed a positive association between mitotic count and Stat3 expression (p < 0.001). These results further support published data found in humans regarding to the relation between the expression of Stat3 and malignancy.

RESUMO

Sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma is an uncommon tumour in human beings, and osteogenic differentiation is a rare feature. This report describes such a case in a male dog aged 8 years. The tumour, which showed extensive osseous metaplasia and a few necrotic areas, protruded into the renal pelvis, disrupting the renal capsule. Light microscopical and immunohistochemical examination revealed the epithelial nature of the tumour. Abnormal liver biochemistry, mild hepatocyte degeneration and the absence of histological evidence of metastasis suggested a paraneoplastic hepatopathy.

RESUMO

Primary cardiac neoplasms are rare in animals. Hemangiosarcoma is the most common primary cardiac tumour in the dog, but has not been reported in the cat. We describe the clinical signs, the gross examination, and the morphological and immunohistochemical features of a haemangiosarcoma in the right atrium of a 13-year-old domestic shorthair cat. In addition, a distant metastasis was found in the liver.

RESUMO

A reliable prothrombin time (PT) testing and a careful drug dosage can prevent thrombotic or bleeding complications of the oral anticoagulant therapy. The international normalised ratio (INR) as PT standardisation introduced an analytical variation that increases with higher PT measures and higher international sensitivity index (ISI) values. Our study was conducted to investigate the INR accuracy through the mathematical derivative application to reduce the analytical component of the INR uncertainty. The evaluation of accuracy among four different systems (prothrombin activity percent, PT seconds, PT ratio and INR) was determined by the simulation of a systematic error. Plasma samples were diluted 1:2; then they were compared observed with the expected values. We analysed the calculation system of the INR through the mathematical derivative in 87 PT ratio measurements. The analytical incidence of thromboplastin ISI was performed through an elaboration of INR mathematical derivative considering 10 different ISI values ranging from 1.1 to 2. The data expressed as PT ratios revealed a lower systematic error propagation suggesting that a linear system is more accurate. According to the calculation formula of INR, analytical variability increases with the PT measurements, then with the intensity of anticoagulation. Mathematical derivative suggests that the INR uncertainty due to the ISI can be reduced using a thromboplastin reagent with a low ISI or with ISI close to 1.

RESUMO

37 patients aged between 8 and 11 years old, were treated with the application of a lip bumper in order to explore the effects on the lateral sites after 1 year of treatment. Patients were been divided into two groups, depending on age (8-9 and 10-11) subdividend depending on typology and compared with similar control group. After one year the dental basal height was measured and resulted to be 0.90 mm higher in treated patients than in the control groups.

RESUMO

In order to study the origin of metazoans, we have compared sequences from the 5' end of the large subunit ribosomal RNA of a number of protists, fungi, plants and metazoans, including all diploblastic phyla (sequences of 10 new species have been determined, including that of the placozoan, Trichoplax adhaerens). These sequences were analyzed using distance matrix, maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood methods, and the validity of the results was ascertained with bootstrapping and species removal or addition. Triploblasts and diploblasts formed two clearly separated monophyletic units; this divergence, which apparently preceded the diversification of diploblastic animals (i.e. the successive sponge, ctenophore, cnidarian radiations), showed a much more ancient origin of triploblasts with respect to diploblasts than classically assumed. These results do not exclude the possibility that triploblasts and diploblasts arose independently from different protists.

RESUMO

In this article the Authors have performed a study on 318 students in Naples to estimate the incidence of the dysphonetic diseases in 6-12-18 years-old subjects. The investigation showed that 34.9% of examined patients revealed speech troubles; these troubles were more common in 6-years-old subjects. The dyslalies were the most common phonetic trouble (97.9%) with prevalence of sygmatism (87.9%). The Authors mean to extend the study on more large sample, although the results of the present study were significant.

RESUMO

Arginine kinase and creatine kinase that catalyze the transfer of a phosphate group between ATP and arginine and creatine, respectively, play an important role in cellular energetics. In contrast to most animals which exhibit a single phosphagen kinase activity (creatine kinase in chordates and arginine kinase in protostomians), echinoderms exhibit both arginine kinase and creatine kinase activities, sometimes in the same tissue. In contrast to chordates in which creatine kinases are dimers (consisting of two subunits of 40 kDa) and protostomians in which arginine kinases are usually monomers (40 kDa), echinoids contain specific phosphagen kinases: a dimeric arginine kinase (consisting of two subunits of 42 kDa) in eggs and a monomeric creatine kinase (145 kDa) in sperm. We have examined echinoderms from the five existing classes (echinoids, asteroids, ophiuroids, holothurians and crinoids) for the expression of these specific phosphagen kinases in different tissues. Gel filtration was used to determine the molecular masses of the native enzymes. Antibodies specific for arginine kinase or for creatine kinase were used to characterize the subunit composition of arginine kinase and creatine kinase after SDS/PAGE and transfer. In all echinoderms analyzed, arginine kinase always occurred as an enzyme of about 81 kDa consisting of two subunits of 42 kDa and creatine kinase as a monomeric enzyme of 140-155 kDa. The occurrence in echinoderms of both phosphagen kinases with distinct specificities and specific molecular structures is discussed from both a developmental and evolutionary point of view.

RESUMO

In most invertebrates, creatine kinase is replaced by arginine kinase, which catalyzes reversibly the transfer of a phosphate group between adenosine triphosphate and arginine. In sea-urchin larvae, arginine kinase only is expressed whereas in adult sea-urchins both arginine kinase and creatine kinase can be found in the same tissue. In order to study their developmental regulation and properties, we have purified arginine kinase to homogeneity from the eggs of the sea-urchin Paracentrotus lividus. The purification involves ethanol and ammonium sulfate precipitations, followed by an anion-exchange chromatography, an affinity chromatography and a gel filtration. A 500-fold increase in specific activity leads to a specific activity of 360 IU/mg protein at 25 degrees C. Arginine kinase (pI = 5.7) is rapidly and irreversibly inactivated at 45 degrees C. Amino acid composition and Km values (2.08 mM for phospho-L-arginine and 1.25 mM for ADP) are also given. Determination of molecular mass by gel filtration and separation by SDS/polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis indicate that the enzyme is an 81-kDa dimer of two subunits of 42 kDa.
