RESUMO

We consider theories of N-component fields with exotic spacetime symmetries, including a conserved dipole moment. Microscopic charges are immobile by symmetry, and so resemble fractons. Using collective fields we solve these models to leading order in large N. The large N solution reveals that these models are strongly correlated, and that interactions dress the microscopic charges so that they become mobile, long-lived quasiparticles. Dipole symmetry is spontaneously broken throughout the phase diagram of these models, leading to a low-energy Goldstone description.

Current theories of attention differentiate exogenous from endogenous orienting of visuospatial attention. While both forms of attention orienting engage different functional systems, endogenous and exogenous attention are thought to share resources, as shown by empirical evidence of their functional interactions. The present study aims to uncover the neurobiological basis of how salient events that drive exogenous attention disrupts endogenous attention processes. We hypothesize that interference from exogenous attention over endogenous attention involves alpha-band activity, a neural marker of visuospatial attention. To test this hypothesis, we contrast the effects of endogenous attention across two experimental tasks while we recorded electroencephalography (n = 32, both sexes): a single cueing task where endogenous attention is engaged in isolation, and a double cueing task where endogenous attention is concurrently engaged with exogenous attention. Our results confirm that the concurrent engagement of exogenous attention interferes with endogenous attention processes. We also found that changes in alpha-band activity mediate the relationship between endogenous attention and its effect on task performance, and that the interference of exogenous attention on endogenous attention occurs via the moderation of this indirect effect. Altogether, our results substantiate a model of attention, whereby endogenous and exogenous attentional processes involve the same neurophysiological resources. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Scientists differentiate top-down from bottom-up visuospatial attention processes. While bottom-up attention is rapidly engaged by emerging demands from the environment, top-down attention in contrast reflects slow voluntary shifts of spatial attention. Several lines of research substantiate the idea that top-down and bottom-up attentional processes involve distinct functional systems. An increasing number of studies, however, argue that both attention systems share brain processing resources. The current study examines how salient visual events that engage bottom-up processes interfere with top-down attentional processes. Using neurophysiological recordings and multivariate pattern classification techniques, the authors show that these patterns of interference occur within the alpha-band of neural activity (8-12 Hz), which implies that bottom-up and top-down attention processes share this narrow-band frequency brain resource. The results further demonstrate that patterns of alpha-band activity explains, in part, the interference between top-down and bottom-up attention at the behavioral level.

OBJECTIVE: Shift work causes circadian rhythms to misalign with the demands of the environment, which has been associated with sleep difficulties and cognitive impairments. Although bright light exposure during night shifts can improve circadian alignment, its implementation is often infeasible. Here, we tested whether light exposure in the evening, before the night shift, could improve fatigue, work performance, mood, and sleep. METHODS: Fifty-seven healthy nurses who worked full-time rapidly rotating shift schedules completed the study. In a mixed-design randomized controlled trial, participants completed a baseline observation period before following 1 of 2 interventions. The experimental intervention aimed to improve circadian alignment using evening light exposure and morning light avoidance; the control intervention aimed to improve alertness and reduce sleep disturbances by modifying diet. Every morning and evening for 30 days, participants completed measures of fatigue, work-related errors, sleepiness, mood, sleep duration, and sleep quality. RESULTS: Compared to the baseline observation period, the experimental intervention reduced errors by 67%, while the control intervention reduced them by only 5%. This reduction was partially mediated by fatigue; experimental participants reported less fatigue on work days than control participants (d = 0.25 [0.10, 0.38]). The experimental group also showed a small improvement in mood. Both groups showed reductions in fatigue (d = 0.29 [0.20, 0.36]) and sleepiness (d = 0.21 [0.12, 0.28]) as well as a small increase in sleep duration. CONCLUSIONS: Interventions based on evening light may be a feasible and effective strategy to reduce fatigue and errors in night-shift workers.

When it comes to antidepressant medications - popular, backbone drugs of modern psychiatry - even learned scholars and savvy clinicians find it difficult to separate honest, rigorous research from that which thrives on hidden agendas and ulterior motives. Fortunately, a mounting corpus of data-based studies, mostly meta-analyses, casts new and critical light on the clinical efficacy, side effects, and therapeutic outcomes of antidepressants. Spearheading these efforts over the past few decades, Irving Kirsch and colleagues have challenged the hegemonic view of antidepressants as an effective therapeutic intervention. Notably, Kirsch illuminates the small difference between antidepressants and placebos in mitigating depression-a difference that may be statistically significant yet fails to reach clinical significance. This piece sketches the important contributions Kirsch has made to the scientific understanding of antidepressant medications.

Recent developments in neuroscience and artificial intelligence have allowed machines to decode mental processes with growing accuracy. Neuroethicists have speculated that perfecting these technologies may result in reactions ranging from an invasion of privacy to an increase in self-understanding. Yet, evaluating these predictions is difficult given that people are poor at forecasting their reactions. To address this, we developed a paradigm using elements of performance magic to emulate future neurotechnologies. We led 59 participants to believe that a (sham) neurotechnological machine could infer their preferences, detect their errors, and reveal their deep-seated attitudes. The machine gave participants randomly assigned positive or negative feedback about their brain's supposed attitudes towards charity. Around 80% of participants in both groups provided rationalisations for this feedback, which shifted their attitudes in the manipulated direction but did not influence donation behaviour. Our paradigm reveals how people may respond to prospective neurotechnologies, which may inform neuroethical frameworks.

Microdosing-the intermittent ingestion of minute, sub-hallucinogenic amounts of psychedelic substances, repeatedly and over time-has become a widespread, albeit largely understudied, phenomenon. Regulations around using psychedelics at any dose-micro, mini, macro, or mega-pose all sorts of difficulties for those who wish to systematically study the effects of Schedule I drugs, especially in the United States. Microdosers commonly claim that taking a sub-hallucinogenic (pre-hallucinogenic or sub-perceptual) dose improves higher brain functions, including creativity, productivity, and mood. If true, these results would provide an important experimental edge in distinguishing psychosocial effects (e.g. caused by expectation) from those related to the active psychedelic ingredient. In this critical integrative synthesis, we explore the psychobiological science of dose amounts and how it informs microdosing with classical psychedelics (e.g. lysergic acid diethylamide [LSD] and psilocybin) to highlight and fuel research into questions (e.g. in cognitive neuroscience, consciousness studies, and metacognition). We sketch the hurdle-laden regulatory landscape and the procedures that shroud research with Schedule I drugs. Finally, we offer some future directions relevant to both scholars and clinicians in the social and behavioral sciences as well as in mental health and neurological science.

The lychee fruit is in high demand worldwide. However, the yields of many cultivars are low, including the high-quality cultivars "Nuomici" (NMC) and "Fei Zi Xiao" (FZX), which are very tasty and produce large fruit with a small seed, but tend to shed their fruitlets. In a previous work, we found that cross-hand pollination of "Mauritius" (MA) with pollen of another cultivar increased fruit set and reduced fruit-drop in comparison to self-hand pollination. In the current research, we aimed to identify the optimal pollen donor for three of the main cultivars grown in Israel: MA, FZX, and "Tamuz" (TA). We compared the effect of different pollinizers and found that the Vietnamese cultivar "Hong Long" (HL), which is becoming an important cultivar in Israel, was the optimal pollinizer for the three cultivars. In addition, we found that FZX and TA were not self-fertile under the Israeli environmental conditions since they tend to shed fruitlets that originated from self-fertilization. In contrast, MA is able to fertilize itself, although cross-pollination greatly increased its fruit number and size. We also identified a new PCR marker for lychee, M3, that enabled us to distinguish between self- and cross-fertilized FZX fruits pollinated by HL. Our results indicate that cross-pollination, particularly by HL, has beneficial effects on the production of lychee and it is especially important for cultivars that generate small seeds and tend to shed their fruitlets.

To date, the clinical and scientific literature has best documented the effects of classical psychedelics, such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin, and dimethyltryptamine (DMT), in typical quantities most often associated with macrodosing. More recently, however, microdosing with psychedelics has emerged as a social trend and nascent therapeutic intervention. This variation in psychedelic practice refers to repeat, intermittent ingestion of less-than-macrodose amounts that do not cause the effects associated with full-blown "trips". Microdosing paves the road to incorporating psychedelic drugs into a daily routine while maintaining, or even improving, cognitive and mental function. Unlike macrodosing with psychedelics, the influence of microdosing remains mostly unexplored. And yet, despite the paucity of formal studies, many informal accounts propose that microdosing plays an important role as both a therapeutic intervention (e.g., in mental disorders) and enhancement tool (e.g., recreationally-to boost creativity, improve cognition, and drive personal growth). In response to this relatively new practice, we provide an integrative synthesis of the clinical, social, and cultural dimensions of microdosing. We describe some of the overarching context that explains why this practice is increasingly in vogue, unpack potential benefits and risks, and comment on sociocultural implications. In addition, this article considers the effects that macro- and microdoses have on behavior and psychopathology in light of their dosage characteristics and contexts of use.

Problematic smartphone use is rising across the world. We tested an intervention with ten strategies that nudge users to reduce their smartphone use, for example by disabling non-essential notifications and changing their display to greyscale. Participants first completed baseline measures of smartphone use, well-being, and cognition before choosing which intervention strategies to follow for 2 to 6 weeks. Study 1 ( N = 51 ) used a pre-post design while study 2 ( N = 70 ) compared the intervention to a control group who monitored their screen time. Study 1 found reductions in problematic smartphone use, screen time, and depressive symptoms after 2 weeks. Study 2 found that the intervention reduced problematic smartphone use, lowered screen time, and improved sleep quality compared to the control group. Our brief intervention returned problematic smartphone use scores to normal levels for at least 6 weeks. These results demonstrate that various strategies can be combined while maintaining feasibility and efficacy.

The Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) creates distortions of body ownership through multimodal integration of somatosensory and visual inputs. This illusion largely rests on bottom-up (automatic multisensory and perceptual integration) mechanisms. However, the relative contribution from top-down factors, such as controlled processes involving attentional regulation, remains unclear. Following previous work that highlights the putative influence of higher-order cognition in the RHI, we aimed to further examine how modulations of working memory load and task instructions-two conditions engaging top-down cognitive processes-influence the experience of the RHI, as indexed by a number of psychometric dimensions. Relying on exploratory factor analysis for assessing this phenomenology within the RHI, our results confirm the influence of higher-order, top-down mental processes. Whereas task instruction strongly modulated embodiment of the rubber hand, cognitive load altered the affective dimension of the RHI. Our findings corroborate that top-down processes shape the phenomenology of the RHI and herald new ways to improve experimental control over the RHI.

Chemical thinning of apple fruitlets is an important practice as it reduces the natural fruit load and, therefore, increases the size of the final fruit for commercial markets. In apples, one chemical thinner used is Metamitron, which is sold as the commercial product Brevis® (Adama, Ashdod, Israel). This thinner inhibits the electron transfer between Photosystem II and Quinone-b within light reactions of photosynthesis. In this study, we investigated the responses of two apple cultivars-Golden Delicious and Top Red-and photosynthetic light reactions after administration of Brevis®. The analysis revealed that the presence of the inhibitor affects both cultivars' energetic status. The kinetics of the photoprotective mechanism's sub-processes are attenuated in both cultivars, but this seems more severe in the Top Red cultivar. State transitions of the antenna and Photosystem II repair cycle are decreased substantially when the Metamitron concentration is above 0.6% in the Top Red cultivar but not in the Golden Delicious cultivar. These attenuations result from a biased absorbed energy distribution between photochemistry and photoprotection pathways in the two cultivars. We suggest that Metamitron inadvertently interacts with photoprotective mechanism-related enzymes in chloroplasts of apple tree leaves. Specifically, we hypothesize that it may interact with the kinases responsible for the induction of state transitions and the Photosystem II repair cycle.

Perspective-taking, whether through imagination or virtual-reality interventions, seems to improve intergroup relations; however, which intervention leads to better outcomes remains unclear. This preregistered study collected measures of empathy and race bias from 90 participants, split into one of three perspective-taking groups: embodied perspective-taking, mental perspective-taking, and a control group. We drew on virtual-reality technology alongside a Black confederate across all conditions. Only in the first group, participants got to exchange real-time viewpoints with the confederate and literally "see through the eyes of another." In the two other conditions, participants either imagined a day in the life of the Black confederate or in their own life, respectively. Our findings show that, compared with the control group, the embodied perspective-taking group scored higher on empathy sub-components. On the contrary, both perspective-taking interventions differentially affected neither explicit nor implicit race bias. Our study suggests that embodiment of an outgroup can enhance empathy.

Background: Ample evidence demonstrates that placebo effects are modulated by contextual factors. Few interventions, however, attempt to combine a broad range of these factors. Here, we explore the therapeutic power of placebos by leveraging factors including social proof, positive suggestion, and social learning. This study aimed to test the feasibility of an elaborate "super placebo" intervention to reduce symptoms of various disorders in a pediatric population. Methods: In a single-arm qualitative study, participants entered an inactive MRI scanner which they were told could help their brain heal itself through the power of suggestion. The sample included 11 children (6-13 years old) diagnosed with disorders known to be receptive to placebos and suggestion (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, chronic skin picking, and migraines). The children were given positive suggestions during 2-4 placebo machine sessions over the span of approximately 1 month. We assessed open-ended treatment outcomes via recorded interviews and home visits. Results: The procedure was feasible and no adverse events occurred. Ten of the 11 parents reported improvements in their children after the intervention, ranging from minor transient changes to long-term reductions in subjective and objective symptoms (e.g., migraines and skin lesions). Discussion: These preliminary findings demonstrate the feasibility and promise of combining a broad range of contextual factors in placebo studies. Future research is needed to assess the causal effects of such interventions.

Attention abilities rest on the coordinated interplay of multiple components. One consequence to this multifaceted account is that selection processes likely intersect with perception at various junctures. Drawing from this overarching view, the current research examines how different forms of visuospatial attention influence various aspects of conscious perception, including signal detection, signal discrimination, visual awareness, and metacognition. In this effort, we combined a double spatial cueing approach, where stimulus- and goal-driven orienting were concurrently engaged via separate cues, with Type I and Type II signal detection theoretic frameworks through five experiments. Consistent with the modular view of visuospatial attention, our comprehensive assessment reveals that stimulus- and goal-driven orienting operate independently of each other for increasing perceptual sensitivity and reducing the decision bound. Conversely, however, our study shows that both forms of orienting hardly influence visual awareness and metacognition once perceptual sensitivity is accounted for. Our results therefore undermine the idea that attention directly interfaces with subjective aspects of perception. Instead, our findings submit a general framework whereby these attention modules indirectly impact visual awareness and metacognition by increasing perceptual evidence and decreasing the decision bound. Suggestions can cause some individuals to miss or disregard existing visual stimuli, but can they infuse sensory input with nonexistent information? Although several prominent theories of hypnotic suggestion propose that mental imagery can change our perceptual experience, data to support this stance remain sparse. The present study addressed this lacuna, showing how suggesting the presence of physically absent, yet critical, visual information transforms an otherwise difficult task into an easy one. Here, we show how adult participants who are highly susceptible to hypnotic suggestion successfully hallucinated visual occluders on top of moving objects. Our findings support the idea that, at least in some people, suggestions can add perceptual information to sensory input. This observation adds meaningful weight to theoretical, clinical, and applied aspects of the brain and psychological sciences.

RATIONALE: Is it possible to have a psychedelic experience from a placebo alone? Most psychedelic studies find few effects in the placebo control group, yet these effects may have been obscured by the study design, setting, or analysis decisions. OBJECTIVE: We examined individual variation in placebo effects in a naturalistic environment resembling a typical psychedelic party. METHODS: Thirty-three students completed a single-arm study ostensibly examining how a psychedelic drug affects creativity. The 4-h study took place in a group setting with music, paintings, coloured lights, and visual projections. Participants consumed a placebo that we described as a drug resembling psilocybin, which is found in psychedelic mushrooms. To boost expectations, confederates subtly acted out the stated effects of the drug and participants were led to believe that there was no placebo control group. The participants later completed the 5-Dimensional Altered States of Consciousness Rating Scale, which measures changes in conscious experience. RESULTS: There was considerable individual variation in the placebo effects; many participants reported no changes while others showed effects with magnitudes typically associated with moderate or high doses of psilocybin. In addition, the majority (61%) of participants verbally reported some effect of the drug. Several stated that they saw the paintings on the walls "move" or "reshape" themselves, others felt "heavy… as if gravity [had] a stronger hold", and one had a "come down" before another "wave" hit her. CONCLUSION: Understanding how context and expectations promote psychedelic-like effects, even without the drug, will help researchers to isolate drug effects and clinicians to maximise their therapeutic potential.

Meiotic recombination is the main driver of genetic diversity in wheat breeding. The rate and location of crossover (CO) events are regulated by genetic and epigenetic factors. In wheat, most COs occur in subtelomeric regions but are rare in centromeric and pericentric areas. The aim of this work was to increase COs in both "hot" and "cold" chromosomal locations. We used Virus-Induced gene Silencing (VIGS) to downregulate the expression of recombination-suppressing genes XRCC2 and FANCM and of epigenetic maintenance genes MET1 and DDM1 during meiosis. VIGS suppresses genes in a dominant, transient and non-transgenic manner, which is convenient in wheat, a hard-to-transform polyploid. F1 hybrids of a cross between two tetraploid lines whose genome was fully sequenced (wild emmer and durum wheat), were infected with a VIGS vector ∼ 2 weeks before meiosis. Recombination was measured in F2 seedlings derived from F1-infected plants and non-infected controls. We found significant up and down-regulation of CO rates along subtelomeric regions as a result of silencing either MET1, DDM1 or XRCC2 during meiosis. In addition, we found up to 93% increase in COs in XRCC2-VIGS treatment in the pericentric regions of some chromosomes. Silencing FANCM showed no effect on CO. Overall, we show that CO distribution was affected by VIGS treatments rather than the total number of COs which did not change. We conclude that transient silencing of specific genes during meiosis can be used as a simple, fast and non-transgenic strategy to improve breeding abilities in specific chromosomal regions.

The self has fascinated scholars for centuries. Although theory suggests that the self-concept (cognitive self-understanding) and bodily self (pre-reflective awareness of one's body) are related, little work has examined this notion. To this end, in Study 1, participants reported on self-concept clarity (SCC) and completed the rubber hand illusion (RHI), a paradigm in which synchronous (vs. asynchronous) stimulation between a prosthetic hand and one's own hand leads one to "embody" the prosthetic hand. Whereas participants were equally susceptible to the RHI during synchronous stroking, low-SCC individuals were more vulnerable to the illusion during asynchronous stroking, when the effect is unwarranted. Conceptually replicating and extending this finding, in Study 2, low-SCC individuals were more susceptible to the body-swap illusion-the impression that another person's body is one's own. These findings suggest that a clear sense of self implies clarity and stability of both the self-concept and the bodily self.

Over a quarter of employees in North America and a fifth of those in the European Union do shift work. Working these schedules increases fatigue, sleepiness, and errors at work. In the long term, it may also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal problems, and cancer. Some of these consequences may be partly due to circadian misalignment, in which sleep and activity patterns no longer align with one's circadian rhythms. Previous research has found that controlling light exposure can improve circadian alignment in individuals who work permanent night shifts. However, light-based interventions are rarely tested with rapidly rotating shift schedules, which include more than one type of shift within the same week (e.g., day shifts followed by night shifts). Further, many of the available interventions are seldom used in the workplace and may be less feasible in healthcare environments. In hospitals, the health and safety of both workers and patients can be compromised by increases in fatigue. We thus developed a practical intervention based on circadian and sleep hygiene principles to reduce some of the negative consequences associated with shift work. We then tested this intervention in a feasibility study of 33 nurses working rapidly rotating shifts. The study took place over two separate periods: the control (observation) period and the intervention period. Each period included two to four consecutive night shifts as well as the two days before and after those shifts. Nurses completed daily self-report questionnaires during both periods. During the intervention period, the nurses additionally followed a fatigue reduction plan. The plan involved 40 min of bright light exposure from a portable light box before night shifts, light avoidance using sunglasses after those shifts, and suggestions regarding the ideal times to sleep and nap. Results showed that nurses complied with the large majority of these recommendations. During the intervention period, nurses reported less fatigue, fewer work errors, better and longer sleep, and a more positive mood. Moreover, nurses with a preference for evenings (i.e., later chronotypes) reported the strongest benefits. Though more controlled studies are needed to assess causal mechanisms and long-term effectiveness, these promising results suggest that light-based interventions are feasible and may be effective at reducing fatigue in rapidly rotating shift workers.
