RESUMO
Nine cases of so-called late infections following foreign body inclusions due to trauma as well as possible developmental mechanisms were discussed. The question arises as to whether a nonirritating incorporated foreign body should be surgically removed as early as possible to eliminate the possibility of late infection.

More than 30% of the patients with dermoid and epidermoid cysts treated on an in-patient basis during the last 10 years in the Düsseldorf Hospital for Jaw and Plastic Surgery showed symptoms of acute or chronic inflammation. The difficulties involved in the clinical diagnosis of infected dermoid or epidermoid cysts were illustrated by example cases. Infected dermoid and epidermoid cysts may be mistaken for ondontogenous abscesses, infected atheromas, furuncles, superinfected tumors, and specific inflammations.

A statistical study of fractures occurring in children with injuries of the head neck admitted to the clinic for Maxillo-Facial and Plastic Surgery of the Face, Düsseldorf, during the past 13 years is presented. The 210 cases were evaluated according to age, sex, frequency of occurrence, type, localisation and cause of injury, as well as therapy and average duration of treatment.

Catamnestic surveys of 371 children who suffered from abscesses during the past ten years (1965 to 1974) showed that type and location of the abscesses and their incidence in the various age groups are typical and differ from those of abscesses in adults. These results are discussed and compared with the data found in the literature.

Pedicled skin flaps of 22 patients which had been exposed for many years to the environment of the oral cavity were examined clinically and histologically. The results permit statements to be made on the nature of the changes which occur on the surface, and in the histological picture of the graft. The superficial skin changes, as well as the typical histological structures of the external skin are shown in the micro-photographs presented, to be still preserved after many years.

In 12 patients with neurofibromatosis of the maxillofacial region distinct changes of the facial skeleton were found, which in localisation and extent largely conformed to the more or less wide soft tissue hyperplasias. In pronounced cases, a combined maxillo-zygomatico-temporo-mandibular hypoplasia was present radiographically. These skeletal changes hardly can be interpreted as pressure atrophy caused by the adjacent neurofibromatous tumours; more likely they are the result of complex developmental disorders. A more detailed explanation possibly will be obtained, when development and skeletal changes are controlled radiographically over a long period of time.

Major maxillo-facial surgery causes arterial hypoxaemia, as well as a depletion of electrolytes serum protein during the postoperative period. Based on the investigations of 25 patients, a repertoire for the study of the postoperative course after major maxillo-facial operations has been offered, and a method for the avoidance of complications suggested.

This paper presents the findings made on the rate of mortality following tumour resections in the head and neck achieved in the Clinic for Maxillo-Facial and Plastic Surgery of the Face, University of Dusseldorf, from 1953 to 1973. The relationship between rate of mortality and improved measures taken before, during and after the operation are also discussed.
