RESUMO

A simultaneous action of the modified electric current and ionizing radiation (5.5-25 Gy) was shown to decrease the death rate, to increase the life-span of rats, and to induce the intestinal syndrome at higher doses than the action of each factor delivered separately. There was a correlation between the modifying effect and the faster restoration of cellularity of bone marrow and peripheral blood, and the number of nucleate enterocytes of the small intestine mucosa.

RESUMO

The method of the estimation of interaction between two harmful effects based on the statistical survival rate data is discussed. In terms of the competitive risk model, an independent effect was defined as a product of survival functions corresponding to an isolated effect of each injurious factor. The proposed method is based on the comparison between the animals' lifetimes in the case of the isolated effects and the actual survival rates after the combined radiation effect. The comparison of the two alternatives was made by the regression model of Cox adapted for the purposes of this study.

RESUMO

A simple approach is proposed to determine locally denatured sites and stability characteristics of secondary DNA structure. The method is based on the analysis of the initial part of melting curve and the determination of changes in the optical density of DNA after heating up to a fixed temperature. The potentiality of the approach is illustrated by the experiments with DNA containing defects in the secondary structure caused by gamma-irradiation in vitro. The sensitivity of the method is less than 0.2 Gy.

RESUMO

A study was made of the dynamics of changes in the number of reticulocytes in the peripheral blood and of reticulocytograms in rats subjected to partial (front or hind body parts) X-irradiation with LD100/10, LD50/30, and LD0/30. The degree of the post-irradiation reticulocytopenia and modification of reticulocytograms was a function of radiation dose as observed 1-3 h following irradiation of the front part and 48 h after irradiation of the hind part of the animal body.

RESUMO

A study was made of the radioprotective and therapeutic effect of potassium orotate on rats subjected to whole-body gamma-irradiated with doses of 11, 9 and 4 Gy. The preparation exerted a radioprotective action when administered intraperitoneally 60 min before irradiation as was estimated with a reference to the survival rate and leukocyte level in the peripheral blood. Fron the analysis of the peripheral blood consumption it was inferred that potassium orotate weakened the radiation damage and enhanced the recovery processes during the postirradiation period.

RESUMO

In experiments on mongrel albino male rats a study was made of the dynamics of changes in the number of peripheral blood reticulocytes and their count during the first 24 h after total-body uniform exposure to gamma-quanta (60Co, LD100/11, LD45/30, LD12,5/30 and LD0/30). After 12 and 24 h, the number of reticulocytes was shown to be a function of radiation dose. The degree of the reticulocytopenia and a change in the reticulocytograms permitted to estimate the presence of affection as well as its degree and outcome.
