RESUMO

Background: Pyrus ussuriensis (Maxim.) is a unique pear tree that grows in northern China. The tree has strong cold resistance and can withstand low temperatures from -30 °C to -35 °C. Due to its unique growth environment, its fruit is rich in minerals and has much higher levels of minerals such as K, Ca and Mg than the fruit of Pyrus pyrifolia (Nakai.) and Pyrus bretschneideri (Rehd.) on the market, and many say the ripe fruit tastes better than other varieties. A comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of mineral elements in the fruits of different varieties of P. ussuriensis will provide a valuable scientific basis for the selection, breeding and production of consumer varieties of P. ussuriensis, and provide a more complete understanding of nutritional differences between fruit varieties. Methods: In this study, 70 varieties of wild, domesticated and cultivated species of P. ussuriensis from different geographical locations were compared. Targeting four main mineral elements and eight trace mineral elements contained in the fruit, the differences in mineral content in the peel and pulp of different varieties of P. ussuriensis were analyzed, compared and classified using modern microwave digestion ICP-MS. Results: The mineral elements in the fruit of P. ussuriensis generally followed the following content pattern: K > P > Ca > Mg > Na > Al > Fe > Zn > Cu > Cr > Pb > Cd. The mineral element compositions in the peel and pulp of different fruits were also significantly different. The four main mineral elements in the peel were K > Ca > P > Mg, and K > P > Mg > Ca in the pulp. The mineral element content of wild fruit varieties was higher than that of cultivated and domesticated varieties. Correlation analysis results showed that there was a significant positive correlation between K, P and Cu in both the peel and pulp of P. ussuriensis fruit (P < 0. 01). Cluster analysis results showed that the 70 varieties of P. ussuriensis could be divided into three slightly different categories according to the content of the peel or pulp. According to the contents of the fruit peel, these varieties were divided into: (1) varieties with high Na, Mg, P, K, Fe and Zn content, (2) varieties with high Ca content and (3) varieties with medium levels of mineral elements. According to the fruit pulp content, these varieties were divided into: (1) varieties with high Mg, P and K content, (2) varieties with low mineral element content, and (3) varieties with high Na and Ca content. The comprehensive analysis of relevant mineral element content factors showed that 'SSHMSL,' 'QYL,' 'SWSL' and 'ZLTSL-3' were the best varieties, and could be used as the focus varieties of future breeding programs for large-scale pear production.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Limited clinical studies are available on early exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation in elderly acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of aerobic exercise on exercise capacity and quality of life (QoL) in such patients. METHODS: Seventy elderly patients with ACS undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention in Zhejiang Hospital during August 2016-June 2017 were randomly divided into the control (n = 35) or cardiac rehabilitation group (CR, n = 35). The control group was treated with standard medical treatments without exercise, whereas the CR group was treated with standard medical treatments and exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation. General information, cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) results, responses to QoL and mental health questionnaires, and clinical outcomes and safety were collected. RESULTS: The CR group safely finished CPET and the 12-week exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation. After the 12-week intervention, the CR group showed significant differences in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and greater improvements in VO2max, compared with the control group. The CR group showed statistically significant differences in QoL and mental health compared with the control group. CONCLUSION: CPET-based exercise in cardiac rehabilitation can safely increase exercise capacity and QoL in such patients.

RESUMO

Human stress recovery response to landscapes is under discussion in Chinese settings. The present study aimed to clarify the stress recovery effects of campus street trees on graduate students in autumn. A total of 150 participants (23.75 ± 1.01 years old) completed the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and were then randomly assigned to view one of five virtual environments, including the street trees Sophora japonica, Ginkgo biloba, Platanus acerifolia, Koelreuteria paniculata, and the indoor environment (control). Physiological responses were measured by R-R interval and electroencephalography (EEG). Psychological responses were examined through the state version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S) and the Perceived Restorativeness Scale (PRS). Results showed that R-R intervals significantly increased while viewing all street trees. Both alpha and beta brainwave activities while viewing S. japonica and G. biloba were remarkably higher than those while viewing P. acerifolia and K. paniculata. The STAI-S scores significantly decreased, and the positive PRS scores were registered after viewing street trees. We concluded that a brief virtual visual experience of campus street trees in autumn has stress recovery effects on graduate students, and the different levels of stress recovery are associated with different types of street trees.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the effect of t'ai chi exercise on hypertension in young and middle-aged in-service staff. METHODS: A total of 208 subjects with grade 1 hypertension were enrolled into this study. These subjects were randomly divided into two groups: research group and control group (n = 104, each). On the basis of general daily lifestyle intervention, subjects in the research group underwent 24-Style Simplified t'ai chi exercise for 3 months, whereas subjects in the control group underwent general daily lifestyle intervention. All subjects were followed up at the first and third month of intervention. The body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, blood lipid, and other indexes were measured before and after the intervention, and quality of life was evaluated. RESULTS: (1) In the research group, after 1 month of exercise, systolic blood pressure (SBP), heart rate (HR), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) significantly decreased (p < 0.05), while BMI, blood glucose (Glu), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and pulse pressure (PP) did not significantly change. Furthermore, after 3 months of exercise, BMI, HR, SBP, DBP, PP, TG, TC, LDL-C, and Glu all significantly decreased (p < 0.05). (2) Moreover, the quality of life of subjects in the research group obviously improved after 3 months of t'ai chi exercise (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: t'ai chi exercise can reduce the level of blood pressure in young and middle-aged in-service staff with grade 1 hypertension, control weight, slow down the HR, improve metabolism, and improve quality of life. t'ai chi is an exercise suitable for in-service hypertension subjects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Ischemia-reperfusion injury is associated with vascular dysfunction. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of emodin, a Chinese herbal medicine, in hypoxia-reoxygenation injury in cultured human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) and its effects on the expression of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) signaling pathway. MATERIAL AND METHODS An in vitro hypoxia-reoxygenation model used cultured human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs). A colorimetric method evaluated the activity of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ). Phosphorylation of PPAR-γ and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) were measured by Western blotting. Expression of inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blotting. Nitric oxide (NO) production was detected by diaminofluorescein-FM diacetate (DAF-FM DA) fluorescence. Immunoprecipitation was used to evaluate the molecular coupling of heat shock protein (HSP)90 and eNOS. RESULTS Hypoxia-reoxygenation injury of HAECs reduced the activity and phosphorylation of PPAR-γ, and eNOS, NO production, and HSP90/eNOS molecular coupling in a time-dependent manner. Hypoxia-reoxygenation increased the levels of inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-8 in a time-dependent manner. Emodin treatment recovered PPAR-γ activity and phosphorylation, eNOS phosphorylation, and HSP90/eNOS coupling in HAECS in a concentration-dependent manner, which was reversed by the PPAR-γ inhibitor GW9662, and the eNOS inhibitor, L-NAME. The recovery of HSP90/eNOS coupling by emodin was impaired by GW9662 treatment. CONCLUSIONS An in vitro hypoxia-reoxygenation (ischemia-reperfusion injury) model of induction of endothelial cell inflammatory mediators showed that emodin recovered the PPAR-γ and eNOS pathway activity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect and safety of Kuanxiong Aerosol (, KA) on patients with angina pectoris. METHODS: Block randomization was performed to randomly allocate 750 patients into KA (376 cases) and control groups (374 cases). During an angina attack, the KA group received 3 consecutive sublingual sprays of KA (0.6 mL per spray). The control group received 1 sublingual nitroglycerin tablet (NT, 0.5 mg/tablet). Log-rank tests and Kaplan-Meier estimations were used to estimate the angina remission rates at 6 time-points after treatment (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and >5 min). Logistic regression analysis was performed to observe the factors inflfluencing the rate of effective angina remission, and the remission rates and incidences of adverse reactions were compared for different Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) classes of angina. RESULTS: The 5-min remission rates in the KA and control groups were not signifificantly different (94.41% vs. 90.64%, P>0.05). The angina CCS class signifificantly inflfluenced the rate of remission (95% confidence interval = 0.483-0.740, P<0.01). In the CCS subgroup analysis, the 3-and 5-min remission rates for KA and NT were similar in the CCSII and III subgroups (P>0.05), while they were signifificantly better for KA in the CCSI and II subgroups (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Furthermore, the incidence of adverse reactions was signifificantly lower in the KA group than in the control group for the CCSII and III subgroups (9.29% vs. 26.22%, 10.13% vs. 20.88%, P<0.05 or P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: KA is not inferior to NT in the remission of angina. Furthermore, in CCSII and III patients, KA is superior to NT, with a lower incidence of adverse reactions. RESUMO

BACKGROUND This study was aimed to investigate the protective role of baicalin on vascular endothelium exposed to ischemia reperfusion injury and the involved molecular mechanisms. MATERIAL AND METHODS Cultured human arterial endothelial cells (HAECs) were exposed to hypoxia/deoxygenation (H/R). Cells were also treated with baicalin at serially diluted concentrations. Cells were also treated with PKC activator PEP005 or specific siRNA against protein kinase Cδ (PKCδ). MTT assay was used to evaluate the cell viabilities. Flow cytometry was used to detect cell apoptosis. The protein phosphorylation and expression levels were determined by Western blotting. RESULTS PKCδ-siRNA transfection increased cell viabilities and reduced cell apoptosis in HAECs exposed to H/R. Baicalin treatment preserved cell viabilities and reduced apoptosis of H/R-exposed HAECs in a concentration- dependent manner. Baicalin treatment reduced phosphorylation levels of PKCδ and p53, as well as the expression levels of active caspase3 and bax in HAECs exposed to H/R. The treatment of PKC activator PEP005 impaired the protective effects of baicalin in increasing cell viabilities and reducing apoptosis in HAECs exposed to H/R. CONCLUSIONS Baicalin exerts vascular a protective effect on HAECs exposed to H/R by reducing cell apoptosis. The PKCδ/p53 apoptotic signaling pathway was the pharmacological target of baicalin.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the anginal attack-relieving efficacy and safety of Kuanxiong Aerosol (KA) in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS: A total of 780 patients confirmatively diagnosed as CHD angina from November 2011 to December 2012 in 13 medical centers in the mainland area were assigned to 2 groups by blocked randomization, the treatment group (376 cases) and the control group (374 cases). When the angina attacked, patients in the treatment group received sublingual spray three times, 0.6 mL each time, while those in the control group sublingually dissolved Nitroglycerin Tablet (NT), 0.5 mg each tablet. The effective rate of angina relief, efficacy of electrocardiogram (ECG), and the incidence of adverse reactions were observed. RESULTS: The 3 min and 5 min remission rates of angina attack were 53.72% (202/376) and 94.41% (355/376) in the treatment group, and 47.86% (179/374) and 90.64% (339/374) in the control group. The 95% confidence interval (CI) of the difference between the 2 groups of 3 min and 5 min remission rates of angina attacks were [(-1.84%, 12.32%) and (-1.33%, 6.85%) respectively, P > 0.05]. The total improvement rates of ST-T changes in the treatment group and the control group after treatment were 74.07% and 73.13% respectively (P > 0.05). The adverse reaction rate was 9.31 (35/376 cases) in the treatment group and 22.46% (84/374 cases) in the control group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: KA was not inferior to NT in relieving anginal attacks and improving ischemic ECG changes, and had obviously less adverse reaction.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To provide the basis for clinical acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) surveillance and to avoid cross infection in hospital, we study the infection status of AIDS in Shandong province. METHODS: The fourth-generated Akzo's ELISA kit and the fourth generated Immunoluminometric detection reagent were used for HIV antibody screening for 399 303 cases of both inpatients and outpatients from Jan. 2003 to Dec. 2011. Beijing WanTai ELISA kit and Se-marked rapid detection reagent were used for re-detection, and the positive samples were sent to the local CDC for confirming test by Western Blot. RESULTS: The HIV-1 antibody detection results of 129 (0. 3230 per thousand) patients were confirmed to be positive, including 54 (0. 1352 per thousand) cases of outpatients and 75 (0. 1878 per thousand) cases of inpatients. HIV infection rates in outpatients from 2003 to 2011 were 0.050 per thousand, 0.030 per thousand, 0.111 per thousand, 0.120 per thousand, 0.124 per thousand, 0.113 per thousand, 0.148 per thousand, 0.201 per thousand, 0.2152 per thousand; and that in inpatients were 0. 150 per thousand, 0.089 per thousand, 0.138 per thousand, 0. 144 per thousand, 0. 104 per thousand, 0. 132 per thousand, 0. 197 per thousand, 0. 329 per thousand, 0. 313 per thousand respectively. Among these inpatients, there were 61 cases of medical patients and 14 cases of surgical patients, and most were youths and farmers. CONCLUSIONS: HIV infection rate was increasing year by year. Most inpatients whose HIV-1 antibody was positive were in the phase of AIDS. Therefore, it's very necessary to execute routine testing for inpatients and outpatients who need special examination for early diagnosis of HIV infection
