The energetic green transition is increasing the demand for lithium (Li) exploitation. However, the Li supply faces challenges like limited reserves and environmental concerns. This pioneer study aims to characterize the Li concentrations in the region around the Barroso mine, in Portugal, by collecting and analyzing samples of cabbage, potato, drinking and irrigation water and soil from two nearby sites, and performing a preliminary exposure and risk assessment of local populations. Li levels ranged between 20 and 589 µg/kg in cabbages (n = 23), 2.3-21 µg/kg in potatoes (n = 21), 1.1-5.9 µg/L in drinking water (n = 10), 1.1-15 µg/L in irrigation water (n = 23) and 35-121 mg/kg in soils (n = 23). Significant differences in Li content between sampling sites were observed only for cabbage samples. The risk assessment revealed that none of the participants exceeded the provisional reference dose (p-RfD) (2 µg/kg bw/day), with a hazard quotient (HQ) < 1, suggesting no health concerns for the population. It is expected that the studied area will be affected by the future expansion of the mine concession, thus this pioneer study is crucial for future research as it establishes a initial database for evaluating the potential impact of mining activity on the environment and the population's exposure to Li.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a common symptom in patients with multiple sclerosis and it can lead to activity limitations. Thus, it is important to analyze the relationship between fatigue and activity outcomes, such as walking speed and mobility. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between fatigue and walking speed and mobility in individuals with multiple sclerosis. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed. Adults with multiple sclerosis, without cognitive impairments and who were able to walk were recruited. Fatigue was assessed with the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS). Walking speed, usual and fast, was assessed with the 10-meter Walk Test (10MWT), and mobility with the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG). Pearson correlation analysis was performed. A significance level of 5 % was used. RESULTS: Thirty participants were included, most of the relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (n = 24, 80 %). A mean age of 41 (11) years and the median Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score was 2.65 (2.18) points. Mean MFIS score was 41.87 ± 19.42 points, mean usual walking speed was 1.02 ± 0.28 m/s, mean fast walking speed was 1.55 ± 0.48 m/s, and the mean total time in the TUG was 10.07 ± 3.05 s. A significant negative correlation of moderate magnitude was found between fatigue and usual walking speed (r=₋0.51, p < 0.05). A significant negative correlation of moderate magnitude was found between fatigue and fast walking speed (r=₋0.54, p < 0.05). A significant, positive correlation of moderate magnitude was found between fatigue and mobility (r = 0.54, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There was a correlation between fatigue and walking speed and mobility in individuals with multiple sclerosis. These results highlight the need to assess fatigue in individuals with multiple sclerosis, since the presence of fatigue is associated with reduced walking speed and mobility.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms reported by individuals with multiple sclerosis and it contributes to the reduction of the functionality. Therefore, it is important to assess the impact of fatigue on daily living of individuals with multiple sclerosis. The Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS) is an instrument to assess the perception of the impact of fatigue. However, there have been no investigations about the measurement properties of this instrument administered over the telephone for individuals with multiple sclerosis. OBJECTIVES: To verify the concurrent validity, the test-retest reliability, the standard error of measurement (SEM) and the minimal detectable change (MDC) of the MFIS applied over the telephone to assess the perception of the impact of fatigue of individuals with multiple sclerosis. METHODS: The MFIS, composed of 21 items covering three domains: physical, cognitive and psychosocial, was applied at three different moments with an interval of 5-7 days. To establish the concurrent criterion validity, the face-to-face application and the first evaluation by telephone were used. The two telephone assessments were used to assess the test-retest reliability The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) with 95 % confidence interval (CI) and the Bland-Altman method were used. The standard error of measurement (SEM) and the MDC was calculated according to reliability results. RESULTS: Thirty individuals (40.83 ± 10.61, 60 % female) were included. The median score on the Expanded Disability Status Scale was 2.00 (±4.00). The majority of participants experienced fatigue (n = 17; 56.67 %). A significant and high magnitude correlation (0.70 ≤ ICC ≤ 0.87, p < 0.001) was found in the investigation of concurrent criterion validity. The Bland-Altman method showed a mean difference between 0.70 to 2.17 points between face-to-face and telephone-based application of the MFIS. For test-retest reliability, a significant and very high magnitude correlation (0.91 ≤ ICC ≤ 0.97, p < 0.001) was found. The Bland-Altman method showed a mean difference between -0.03 and -0.77 points between two telephone-based applications. The SEM and the MDC were 0.71 and 1.97 points. CONCLUSION: The telephone-based application of the MFIS to assess the perceived impact of fatigue in individuals with multiple sclerosis demonstrated adequate measurement properties, and may be a valuable tool to assess patients in clinical practice.

Exercise elicits physiological adaptations, including hyperpnea. However, the mechanisms underlying exercise-induced hyperpnea remain unresolved. Skeletal muscle acts as a secretory organ, releasing irisin (IR) during exercise. Irisin can cross the blood-brain barrier, influencing muscle and tissue metabolism, as well as signaling in the central nervous system (CNS). We evaluated the effect of intracerebroventricular or intraperitoneal injection of IR in adult male rats on the cardiorespiratory and metabolic function during sleep-wake cycle under room air, hypercapnia and hypoxia. Central IR injection caused an inhibition on ventilation (VE) during wakefulness under normoxia, while peripheral IR reduced VE during sleep. Additionally, central IR exacerbates hypercapnic hyperventilation by increasing VE and reducing oxygen consumption. As to cardiovascular regulation, central IR caused an increase in heart rate (HR) across all conditions, while no change was observed following peripheral administration. Finally, central IR attenuated the hypoxia-induced regulated hypothermia and increase sleep episodes, while peripheral IR augmented CO2-induced hypothermia, during wakefulness. Overall, our results suggest that IR act mostly on CNS exerting an inhibitory effect on breathing under resting conditions, while stimulating the hypercapnic ventilatory response and increasing HR. Therefore, IR seems not to be responsible for the exercise-induced hyperpnea, but contributes to the increase in HR.

The aims of the present study were to identify strongyles in the feces of Thoroughbred horses based on larval morphology; to detect Strongylus vulgaris using molecular diagnosis and compare results to those of feces culture; and to determine the association between the presence of S. vulgaris with corresponding animal information (age range, gender, and anthelmintic use). Feces of horses kept in six Training Centers in Rio de Janeiro State, that showed the presence of ≥500 eggs per gram of feces (EPG) were subjected to strongyle identification. Of the 520 fecal samples collected, 35 had an EPG ≥ 500. After fecal culture for L3 larvae identification, DNA was extracted, subjected to PCR to amplify the ITS2 region DNA fragment of S. vulgaris, and sequenced. A total of 3500 larvae were analyzed. Most were classified as small strong (99.7%), with an emphasis on the type A subfamily of Cyathostominae. Forms of S. vulgaris only corresponded to 0.2%. In all, 25 samples showed amplified S. vulgaris DNA products and 11 showed nucleotide sequences with high sequence identity. Fecal culture and PCR results showed poor agreement (kappa = 0.105) for S. vulgaris diagnosis. Age, gender, anthelmintic use, and anthelmintic administration interval were not statistically significant. The present study showed the presence of S. vulgaris in the feces of horses kept in Rio de Janeiro Training Centers, mainly seen via PCR, which has emerged as the most effective tool for diagnosis. This study made it possible to identify strongyles that infect horses in the region, emphasizing upon the necessity for constant monitoring of the animals.

In this study, videothermometry's application in detecting mammary tumors in dogs is explored in-depth. The research hypothesizes that this technique can effectively identify cancerous tissues during surgery by analyzing thermal patterns. The methodology involved comparing thermal imaging results from dogs with palpable mammary nodules against a control group, focusing on capturing real-time thermal patterns. Results were significant, showing distinct thermal patterns in carcinomas. This indicates videothermometry's capability in accurately identifying micro metastases and differentiating between neoplastic and non-neoplastic changes. The study concludes that videothermometry has considerable potential in enhancing surgical precision, especially in tumor resection and safety margin definition, but emphasizes the need for further research to thoroughly understand the thermal signatures of various mammary tumors in dogs.

Hydrogels are polymeric materials that possess a set of characteristics meeting various requirements of an ideal wound dressing, making them promising for wound care. These features include, among others, the ability to absorb and retain large amounts of water and the capacity to closely mimic native structures, such as the extracellular matrix, facilitating various cellular processes like proliferation and differentiation. The polymers used in hydrogel formulations exhibit a broad spectrum of properties, allowing them to be classified into two main categories: natural polymers like collagen and chitosan, and synthetic polymers such as polyurethane and polyethylene glycol. This review offers a comprehensive overview and critical analysis of the key polymers that can constitute hydrogels, beginning with a brief contextualization of the polymers. It delves into their function, origin, and chemical structure, highlighting key sources of extraction and obtaining. Additionally, this review encompasses the main intrinsic properties of these polymers and their roles in the wound healing process, accompanied, whenever available, by explanations of the underlying mechanisms of action. It also addresses limitations and describes some studies on the effectiveness of isolated polymers in promoting skin regeneration and wound healing. Subsequently, we briefly discuss some application strategies of hydrogels derived from their intrinsic potential to promote the wound healing process. This can be achieved due to their role in the stimulation of angiogenesis, for example, or through the incorporation of substances like growth factors or drugs, such as antimicrobials, imparting new properties to the hydrogels. In addition to substance incorporation, the potential of hydrogels is also related to their ability to serve as a three-dimensional matrix for cell culture, whether it involves loading cells into the hydrogel or recruiting cells to the wound site, where they proliferate on the scaffold to form new tissue. The latter strategy presupposes the incorporation of biosensors into the hydrogel for real-time monitoring of wound conditions, such as temperature and pH. Future prospects are then ultimately addressed. As far as we are aware, this manuscript represents the first comprehensive approach that brings together and critically analyzes fundamental aspects of both natural and synthetic polymers constituting hydrogels in the context of cutaneous wound healing. It will serve as a foundational point for future studies, aiming to contribute to the development of an effective and environmentally friendly dressing for wounds.

This study addresses the effect of various cooking approaches on total Hg (HgT) and total Se (SeT) contents in three predatory fish species. For this purpose, samples of swordfish, dogfish, and tuna from regular French (fish) markets were cooked by boiling, steaming, grilling, and frying, respectively. The levels of HgT and SeT in raw and cooked samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The data showed a significant increase in HgT and SeT levels between raw and cooked samples (33% of the samples for SeT and 67% for HgT) due to the water loss during the cooking. High intra-species variation related to HgT and SeT levels was found. Considering the level of exposure to HgT through fish consumption and taking also into account the possible protective effect of Se (expressed here via the Se/Hg molar ratio), the safest cooking approach corresponds to grilled swordfish, fried tuna, and steamed dogfish, which show Se/Hg molar ratios of (1.0 ± 0.5), (4.3 ± 4.2), and (1.0 ± 0.6), respectively.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate the association between muscle mass variation, estimated by different equations, during hospitalization with the energy and protein intake and clinical and nutrition outcomes of patients using nutrition support. METHODS: A prospective observational study with patients older than 18 years in use of enteral and/or parenteral nutrition therapy and monitored by the Nutritional Therapy Committee between December 14, 2021, and December 14, 2022. Data were collected from the electronic records and were applied in 11 equations to estimate the four different portions of muscle mass of patients receiving nutrition support at the beginning and the end of hospitalization. RESULTS: A total of 261 patients were evaluated, with a median age of 61.0 (49.0-69.75) years, and 106 were women (40.6%). According to the nutrition diagnosis, several participants had severe malnutrition (39.5%). The most muscle mass estimation equations indicated a reduction of muscle mass during hospitalization. All patients presented negative energy and protein balances during hospitalization, but greater protein intake increased the lean soft tissue. Also, the greater the number of infections, metabolic complications, and scheduled diet interruption, the greater was the chance of losing muscle mass. CONCLUSION: There can be an association between the variation in muscle mass and energy and protein intake during hospitalization of patients using nutrition support. In addition, variation in muscle mass was associated with complications from nutrition support. The results emphasize the importance of anthropometric measurements to estimate muscle mass when other methods are not available.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To compare the long-term ocular findings of children that were operated of congenital cataract before the age of two and that received an intraoperative intracameral triamcinolone injection or used postoperative oral prednisolone to modulate ocular inflammation. Methods: All patients who had previously participated in a clinical trial that analyzed the 1-year surgical outcomes of congenital cataract surgery utilizing intracameral triamcinolone (study group) or oral prednisolone (control group) were eligible to participate in this prospective cohort research. Patients' medical records were reviewed, and the children underwent a complete ophthalmologic exam on final follow-up. Biomicroscopic findings, intraocular pressure, central corneal thickness, the need for additional surgical interventions, and findings compatible with glaucoma were the primary end measures. Results: Twenty-six eyes (26 patients) were included (study group = 11 eyes; control group = 15 eyes). The mean follow--up was 8.2 ± 1.2 years and 8.1 ± 1.7 years in the study and control groups, respectively (p=0.82). All eyes presented a centered intraocular lens. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups with regards to the presence of posterior synechia (p=0.56), intraocular pressure (p=0.49), or central corneal thickness (p=0.21). None of the eyes fulfilled the glaucoma diagnostic criteria, presented secondary visual axis obscuration, or were reoperated. Conclusion: The long--term ocular findings of children that underwent congenital cataract surgery and received an intraoperative intracameral triamcinolone injection were similar to those that used postoperative oral prednisolone to modulate ocular inflammation. This suggests that intracameral triamcinolone may substitute oral prednisolone in congenital cataract surgery, facilitating the postoperative treatment regimen and compliance.


RESUMO Objetivo: Comparar os achados oculares em longo prazo de crianças que se submeteram à cirurgia de catarata congênita antes dos dois anos de idade e receberam uma injeção intracameral de triancinolona no intraoperatório ou usaram prednisolona oral no pós-operatório para modular a inflamação ocular. Métodos: Neste estudo prospectivo de coorte, todos os pacientes que participaram de um ensaio clínico anterior, que analisou os resultados cirúrgicos de 1 ano da cirurgia de catarata congênita usando triancinolona intracameral (Grupo de Estudo) ou prednisolona oral (Grupo Controle), eram elegíveis para participar. Os prontuários médicos dos pacientes foram revisados e as crianças foram submetidas a um exame oftalmológico completo no acompanhamento final. As principais medidas de desfecho foram: achados biomicroscópicos, pressão intraocular, espessura central da córnea, a necessidade de intervenções cirúrgicas adicionais e achados compatíveis com glaucoma. Resultados: Vinte e seis olhos (26 pacientes) foram incluídos (Grupo de Estudo = 11 olhos; Grupo de Controle = 15 olhos). O seguimento médio foi de 8,2 ± 1,2 anos e 8,1 ± 1,7 anos nos Grupos de Estudo e Controle, respectivamente (p=0,82). Todos os olhos apresentavam lente intraocular centrada. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos com relação à presença de sinéquia posterior (p=0,56), pressão intraocular (p=0,49) ou espessura central da córnea (p=0,21). Nenhum dos olhos preencheu os critérios diagnósticos para glaucoma, apresentou opacificação secundária do eixo visual ou foi reoperado. Conclusão: Os achados oculares em longo prazo de crianças que se submeteram à cirurgia de catarata congênita e receberam uma injeção intracameral de triancinolona no intraoperatório foram semelhantes aos que usaram prednisolona oral no pós-operatório para modular a inflamação ocular, sugerindo que a triancinolona intracameral pode substituir a prednisolona oral na cirurgia de catarata congênita, facilitando o tratamento pós-operatório e a adesão ao mesmo.

Introdução: a Hanseníase é uma infecção granulomatosa crônica conhecida mundialmente como Lepra, causada pelo Mycobacterium leprae. Essa patologia afeta especialmente tecidos cutâneos, mucosas, nervos periféricos e as células de Schwann, podendo se manifestar em casos mais graves com comprometimento neural e com repercussão cutânea. Objetivo: realizar levantamento de dados, utilizando entrevistas e registros nos prontuários de pacientes portadores de úlceras cutâneas e diagnosticados com hanseníase em um Hospital Especializado em Dermatologia no interior de São Paulo, com o objetivo de analisar possíveis fatores relacionados ao processo de não cicatrização destas úlceras. Justificativa: considerando a complexidade envolvida na cicatrização das úlceras cutâneas, assim como as dificuldades dos pacientes em compreender esse problema, faz-se necessário entender os fatores que podem influenciar nesse processo e, consequentemente, capacitar pacientes e equipe multiprofissional envolvidos neste tratamento. Materiais e Métodos: estudo de campo, com abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa, utilizando-se um questionário semiestruturado, para conduzir uma entrevista, com pacientes portadores de úlcera cutânea, decorrente da hanseníase, em acompanhamento em um Hospital Especializado em Dermatologia no interior de São Paulo e subsequente coleta de dados no prontuário de cada participante para complementar as informações. Resultado: foram realizadas 30 entrevistas, no período de 25 de outubro de 2023 a 19 de dezembro de 2023. Nestas entrevistas foram convidados 32 pacientes para participarem do estudo, sendo que destes, dois não aceitaram participar. Considerações Finais: observou-se nesse estudo, que todos os participantes apresentam úlceras crônicas e fatores que influenciam negativamente no processo de cicatrização. Observou-se que a falta de informação sobre o diagnóstico, fatores sistêmicos, condições de higiene e o grau de incapacidade. Direcionando de forma mais assertiva as abordagens da equipe na realização da assistência a esses pacientes.


Introduction: Leprosy is a chronic granulomatous infection known worldwide as leprosy, caused by Mycobacterium leprae. This pathology especially affects skin tissues, mucous membranes, peripheral nerves, and Schwann cells, and may manifest in more severe cases with neural impairment and cutaneous repercussions. Objective: To carry out a data collection, using interviews and records in the medical records of patients with skin ulcers and diagnosed with leprosy in a Hospital Specialized in Dermatology in the interior of São Paulo, with the objective of analyzing possible factors related to the non-healing process of these ulcers. Justification: Considering the complexity involved in the healing of cutaneous ulcers, as well as the patients' difficulties in understanding this problem, it is necessary to understand the factors that can influence this process and, consequently, train patients and the multidisciplinary team involved in this treatment. Materials and Methods: field study, with a qualitative and quantitative approach, using a semi-structured questionnaire, to conduct an interview with patients with cutaneous ulcers resulting from leprosy, in follow-up at a Hospital Specialized in Dermatology in the interior of São Paulo, and subsequent data collection in the medical records of each participant to complement the information. Results: 30 interviews were conducted from October 25, 2023 to December 19, 2023. In these interviews, 32 patients were invited to participate in the study, and of these, two did not agree. Final Considerations: In this study, it was observed that all participants have chronic ulcers and factors that negatively influence the healing process. It was observed that there was a lack of information about the diagnosis, systemic factors, hygienic conditions and the degree of disability. Directing the team's approaches in a more assertive way in providing care to these patients.

This research investigated the adsorption of propranolol (PROP) by functionalized green carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-B), assessing the influence of pH, in addition to kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic studies and reuse of the material. For this purpose, speciation of PROP and the point of zero charge (pHPZC) of MWCNT-B were performed, indicating a pKa of 9.67 and pHPZC of 3.31. The adsorption tests at different pH values revealed that in the range of pH 3 to 9, there is no significant variation in PROP uptake, despite this, at pH 11, the removal decreases. Regarding PROP adsorption, the equilibrium time ranged from 30 to 90 min, and the PFO model best represented the kinetic data. The Langmuir model was more predictive in representing isotherms (R2 > 0.95), and the adsorption process was spontaneous and favorable (ΔG < - 20 kJ mol-1) and indicated exothermic behavior (ΔH = - 33 kJ mol-1) for PROP removal. In addition, the material showed satisfactory thermal regeneration results and can be reused for four cycles. The results suggest that MWCNT-B is an attractive adsorbent and exhibits effective removal of propranolol from aqueous matrices.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate cytology diagnosis accuracy using adjuvant methods in clinical routine for oral cancer. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective study was conducted on 98 patients with clinically potentially malignant or malignant oral cavity lesions. One oral lesion smear was taken from each patient using a cytobrush before biopsy and stored at PreservCyt Thinprep. Samples were cytologically analyzed, and DNA ploidy measurement was performed on the same slide. The diagnostic methods' accuracy was then calculated. RESULTS: In clinical inspection, 61 patients had suspicious lesions for malignancy, whereas 37 had potentially malignant disorders. Cytology associated with DNA image cytometry presented a sensitivity of 81.2% and specificity of 90.9%. When analyzing lesions located in high-risk sites to oral malignancies individually, cytology associated with DNA image cytometry presented a sensitivity of 88.2%, specificity of 100.0%, accuracy of 90.0%, and Kappa value of 0.77 (CI 95%: 0.48-1.00). CONCLUSIONS: Association between cytology and DNA image cytometry is an objective and non-invasive diagnostic method that demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing malignant epithelial squamous cell transformation in the oral cavity.

Osteoclasts are specialized cells responsible for bone resorption, a highly energy-demanding process. Focus on osteoclast metabolism could be a key for the treatment of osteolytic diseases including osteoporosis. In this context, AMP-activated protein kinase α1 (AMPKα1), an energy sensor highly expressed in osteoclasts, participates in the metabolic reconfiguration during osteoclast differentiation and activation. This study aimed to elucidate the role of AMPKα1 during osteoclastogenesis in vitro and its impact in bone loss in vivo. Using LysMcre/0AMPK⍺1f/f animals and LysMcre/0 as control, we evaluated how AMPKα1 interferes with osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption activity in vitro. We found that AMPKα1 is highly expressed in the early stages of osteoclastogenesis. Genetic deletion of AMPKα1 leads to increased gene expression of osteoclast differentiation and fusion markers. In addition, LysMcre/0AMPK⍺1f/f mice had an increased number and size of differentiated osteoclast. Accordingly, AMPKα1 negatively regulates bone resorption in vitro, as evidenced by the area of bone resorption in LysMcre/0AMPK⍺1f/f osteoclasts. Our data further demonstrated that AMPKα1 regulates mitochondrial fusion and fission markers upregulating Mfn2 and downregulating DRP1 (dynamics-related protein 1) and that Ctskcre/0AMPK⍺1f/f osteoclasts lead to an increase in the number of mitochondria in AMPK⍺1-deficient osteoclast. In our in vivo study, femurs from Ctskcre/0AMPK⍺1f/f animals exhibited bone loss associated with the increased number of osteoclasts, and there was no difference between Sham and ovariectomized group. Our data suggest that AMPKα1 acts as a negative regulator of osteoclastogenesis, and the depletion of AMPKα1 in osteoclast leads to a bone loss state similar to that observed after ovariectomy.

CONTEXT: Reduced muscle mass is linked to poor outcomes in both inpatients and outpatients, highlighting the importance of muscle mass assessment in clinical practice. However, laboratory methods to assess muscle mass are not yet feasible for routine use in clinical practice because of limited availability and high costs. OBJECTIVE: This work aims to review the literature on muscle mass prediction by anthropometric equations in adults or older people. DATA SOURCES: The following databases were searched for observational studies published until June 2022: MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science. DATA EXTRACTION: Of 6437 articles initially identified, 63 met the inclusion criteria for this review. Four independent reviewers, working in pairs, selected and extracted data from those articles. DATA ANALYSIS: Two studies reported new equations for prediction of skeletal muscle mass: 10 equations for free-fat mass and lean soft tissue, 22 for appendicular lean mass, 7 for upper-body muscle mass, and 7 for lower-body muscle mass. Twenty-one studies validated previously proposed equations. This systematic review shows there are numerous equations in the literature for muscle mass prediction, and most are validated for healthy adults. However, many equations were not always accurate and validated in all groups, especially people with obesity, undernourished people, and older people. Moreover, in some studies, it was unclear if fat-free mass or lean soft tissue had been assessed because of an imprecise description of muscle mass terminology. CONCLUSION: This systematic review identified several feasible, practical, and low-cost equations for muscle mass prediction, some of which have excellent accuracy in healthy adults, older people, women, and athletes. Malnourished individuals and people with obesity were understudied in the literature, as were older people, for whom there are only equations for appendicular lean mass. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of helminths in Thoroughbred horses in Rio de Janeiro; make correlations with risk factors for these infections; and compare the efficiency of three floatation solutions applied in the quantitative Mini-FLOTAC technique. Fecal samples from 520 horses were collected from six training centers between 2019 and 2021. These were subjected to the Mini-FLOTAC technique using three solutions: NaCl (density = 1.200 g/mL), ZnSO4 (1.350 g/mL) and ZnSO4 (1.200 g/mL); and also to qualitative techniques. Information on the horses' sex and age of horses was retrieved from the studbook; data on management from a questionnaire. The overall prevalence of intestinal parasites was 71.9%, with significant differences between training centers (P ≤ .05). On farm C, 87.7% of the samples presented strongylids and 38.7% had Parascaris spp., with the highest egg counts per gram of feces (EPG), of 358.33 and 40.41 respectively. Horses less than 3 years of age were about eight times more likely to be parasitized by strongylids and eleven times more likely to have EPG ≥500. The NaCl solution used in Mini-FLOTAC enabled recovery of the greatest number of samples with high EPG and reached the highest sensitivity values in the diagnosis when compared to the other solutions. Moreover, in the diagnoses, the levels of agreement between the results from the solutions used in Mini-FLOTAC were substantial. However, in estimating the EPG, full agreement between the results from the solutions used in Mini-FLOTAC was not obtained.

In recent years, the changing landscape for the conduct and assessment of research and of researchers has increased scrutiny of the reward systems of science. In this context, correcting the research record, including retractions, has gained attention and space in the publication system. One question is the possible influence of retractions on the careers of scientists. It might be assessed, for example, through citation patterns or productivity rates for authors who have had one or more retractions. This is an emerging issue today, with growing discussions in the research community about impact. We have explored the influence of retractions on grant review criteria. Here, we present results of a qualitative study exploring the views of a group of six representatives of funding agencies from different countries and of a follow-up survey of 224 reviewers in the US. These reviewers have served on panels for the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and/or a few other agencies. We collected their perceptions about the influence of self-correction of the literature and of retractions on grant decisions. Our results suggest that correcting the research record, for honest error or misconduct, is perceived as an important mechanism to strengthen the reliability of science, among most respondents. However, retractions and self-correcting the literature at large are not factors influencing grant review, and dealing with retractions in reviewing grants is an open question for funders.

The frequency of gastrointestinal parasites with an emphasis on Strongylus vulgaris was investigated among the Brazilian Pony breed kept on farms in the municipality of Teresópolis, state of Rio de Janeiro. Fecal samples were collected in three stud farms: A (n= 22 animals), B (n= 3), and C (n= 2). Fecal samples were subjected to the quantitative Mini-FLOTAC technique, using three different solutions, and to qualitative techniques. The parasite prevalence was found to be 81.4%. Eggs from strongylids were identified in 74% of the ponies. Eggs of Parascaris spp. were detected in 22.7% of the animals, which were all females of farm A. At this locality, mares were kept with their foals in fenced paddocks all the time. The NaCl solution of d = 1.200 g/ml was generally the one that presented the highest frequency of diagnosis of nematode eggs and the highest mean of fecal eggs per gram. The fecal samples were also subjected to the polymerase chain reaction for amplification of DNA from the ITS2 region for Strongylus vulgaris. Twelve samples presented nucleotide sequences for S. vulgaris. In the end, this study revealed the high frequency (96.3%) of S. vulgaris among ponies on farms in Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Global warming poses serious implications to animal physiology and a gradual increase in ambient temperature affects all living organisms, particularly fast-growing selected species. We recorded ventilation (V̇E), body temperature (TB), oxygen consumption (V̇O2) and respiratory equivalent (V̇E/V̇O2) of 14-day-old (14d) male and female chicks at room air conditions, hypercapnia and hypoxia at heat stress (HS, 32 °C). These chicks had previously been exposed to control (CI, 37.5 °C) and high (HI, 39 °C) temperatures during the first 5 days of incubation. Under resting conditions, acute HS increased V̇E in HI females but not in HI males. Hypercapnia combined with heat promoted a potentiation of CO2-hyperventilatory response in HI females when compared with thermoneutral condition, whereas in HI incubated males a hypoventilation under hypercapnia and heat stress was observed compared to the CI group. Hypoxia associated with heat stress increased V̇E only in HI females. Our data indicates that females are more sensitive to thermal manipulation during incubation and it seems that the thermal embryonic manipulation, at least during the first days of development, does not improve the adaptive response of chicks to heat stress.
