UNLABELLED: Simple Sequence Repeats (SSRs) are used to address a variety of research questions in a variety of fields (e.g. population genetics, phylogenetics, forensics, etc.), due to their high mutability within and between species. Here, we present an innovative algorithm, SA-SSR, based on suffix and longest common prefix arrays for efficiently detecting SSRs in large sets of sequences. Existing SSR detection applications are hampered by one or more limitations (i.e. speed, accuracy, ease-of-use, etc.). Our algorithm addresses these challenges while being the most comprehensive and correct SSR detection software available. SA-SSR is 100% accurate and detected >1000 more SSRs than the second best algorithm, while offering greater control to the user than any existing software. OBJECTIVE: To report the rate of postoperative septic arthritis following elective diagnostic and surgical arthroscopy in small animals within a clinical setting. METHODS: A retrospective case review from the case log of one veterinary surgeon. RESULTS: Of the 353 procedures included, performed on 305 animals, there were three cases of postoperative sepsis (0.85%). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Interventional arthroscopy including both diagnostic and surgical arthroscopy in small animals is a safe technique and poses a risk of postoperative sepsis of approximately 1%.

The aim of this cadaveric study was to determine the normal arthroscopic anatomy of the feline shoulder from a caudolateral arthroscope portal, to compare this with the gross anatomy evident upon dissection, and to determine the degree of iatrogenic trauma caused by the arthroscopy. A 1.9 mm, 30 degrees fore oblique arthroscope via a caudolateral portal, and a 21-gauge needle via a craniolateral egress portal were used to assess intra-articular structures in eight feline cadaveric shoulders. The medial glenohumeral ligament was shown to be a single banded structure in the craniomedial compartment, and the subscapularis muscle tendon of insertion was visible in all eight shoulders. The biceps brachii tendon and sheath could be examined, although the transverse humeral ligament was not evident arthroscopically from this portal. The lateral glenohumeral ligament was not demonstrated arthroscopically, although a well-defined capsular thickening was present on dissection. No significant neurovascular trauma was evident after arthroscopy.

A three-year-old, female Border Collie was successfully treated for an isolated, torn, medial meniscus by arthroscopic meniscal tear resection. The dog returned to agility competition without recurrence of lameness.

A five-and-a-half-year-old, male neutered golden retriever was presented with sudden onset, plantigrade stance of the left pelvic limb one month after a traumatic incident. A diagnosis of avulsion of the lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle was made based on clinical signs and radiographic assessment. Initial wire reduction and fixation were unsuccessful. However, reduction and fixation with monofilament leader line augmented with a trans-hock external fixator resulted in a successful outcome. The dog had a normal gait 18 months after revision surgery.
