RESUMO

Six sequenced and annotated genomes of Paenibacillus larvae phages isolated from the combs of American foulbrood-diseased beehives are 37 to 45 kbp and have approximately 42% G+C content and 60 to 74 protein-coding genes. Phage Lily is most divergent from Diva, Rani, Redbud, Shelly, and Sitara.

RESUMO

Ultrasound has a high degree of diagnostic accuracy in the assessment of rotator cuff tendons. Increasingly, ultrasound is being used to measure other parameters of rotator cuff pathology, including the size of the subacromial space, or acromiohumeral distance (AHD). Although this measure has been found to be clinically reliable, no assessment of its validity has been carried out. This technical study reports on the development of a novel ultrasound phantom of the shoulder and its use in validation of ultrasound measurement of AHD. There was a close agreement between AHD measures using ultrasound and the true subacromial space of the phantom model, providing support for the construct validity of this measurement. The phantom model has good potential for further development as a training tool for shoulder ultrasound and guided injections.

RESUMO

This case report describes a patient with an acromio-clavicular joint (ACJ) cyst, associated with a complete tear of the supraspinatus tendon, and the related arthropathy. Ultrasound was a suitable imaging modality to make the diagnosis, and rule out other pathologies. Full assessment of the rotator cuff must be carried out in the presence of ACJ cysts due to their common co-existence with large cuff tears. Cyst aspiration is not a suitable treatment, due to the high likelihood of recurrence. Optimal treatment requires management of the underlying rotator cuff tear.

RESUMO

This report describes the case of an amateur soccer player with chronic patellar tendinopathy who underwent ultrasound imaging before and after engaging in an 8-week programme of eccentric exercise. On initial assessment, greyscale ultrasound imaging demonstrated tendon thickening and reduced echogenicity, while Power Doppler imaging demonstrated a large amount of neovascularity. After 8 weeks of an eccentric loading programme, the patient reported significantly improved symptoms and functional scores, while follow-up imaging demonstrated improvement in the echo appearance of the tendon and complete resolution of the neovascularity. The association between neovascularity and symptoms in tendinopathy research is conflicting, with a paucity of research in the area of patellar tendinopathy. While further research is needed to clarify the significance of greyscale and Power Doppler ultrasound changes in relation to symptoms in patellar tendinopathy, ultrasound imaging was shown to be a useful adjunct to diagnosis and outcome assessment in this case.

RESUMO

We describe an unusual presentation of a cutaneous metastasis of esophageal adenocarcinoma in the left tempero-parietal skull and the sonographic features that helped establish the diagnosis. The patient had a primary tumor surgically resected 4 years earlier and was in clinical remission at the time of presentation. The patient presented to our radiology department with a lump on the head after a fall, and sonographic examination was recommended to assess the presumed posttraumatic hematoma. The examination revealed typical features of malignancy: a superficial solid mass invading the skull surrounded by an irregular network of blood vessels. This was confirmed on CT, and a definitive diagnosis was obtained on histologic analysis following sonographically guided biopsy.
