RESUMO

The modern food system is characterized with high environmental impact, which is in many cases associated with increased rates of animal production and overconsumption. The adoption of alternatives to meat proteins (insects, plants, mycoprotein, microalgae, cultured meat, etc.) might potentially influence the environmental impact and human health in a positive or negative way but could also trigger indirect impacts with higher consumption rates. Current review provides a condensed analysis on potential environmental impacts, resource consumption rates and unintended trade-offs associated with integration of alternative proteins in complex global food system in the form of meat substitutes. We focus on emissions of greenhouse gases, land use, non-renewable energy use and water footprint highlighted for both ingredients used for meat substitutes and ready products. The benefits and limitations of meat substitution are highlighted in relation to a weight and protein content. The analysis of the recent research literature allowed us to define issues, that require the attention of future studies.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic as a global threat caused the introduction of different biopolitical measures accompanied by discourses on otherness, including xenophobic, racist, nationalist, or new orientalist discourses. The aim of this research is to map discourses on otherness during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our general hypothesis is that, despite the differences in social and cultural contexts, discourses on otherness generated during the pandemic legitimized biopolitical actions and/or measures in addition to exacerbating social, political and cultural differences. The research is based on a semi-systematic approach to literature review using Situational Analysis and Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse. In conclusion, we discuss the impact of discourse studies in the context of the global emergency.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Bone and soft tissue tumors are rare. There is a variety of types and each one has its own particular behavior, treatment and patient outcome. The assessment of treatment response following the 3rd cycle of chemotherapy is one of the most important aspects of patient care, as therapeutic options and the timing of surgery may vary depending on the achievement of response. Hence, we focused on the advanced imaging technique, proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS), aiming at improving the diagnostic accuracy and the tumor response to therapy, based on the absolute concentration of choline (Cho) as biomarker of malignancy. METHODS: Twenty patients were studied. All of them had a pathological diagnosis after biopsy. MRI examinations were performed using a 1.5 T MR scanner (Avanto; Siemens, Erlangen, Germany). Single-voxel 1H MR spectroscopy was performed by using a PRESS with TR/TE 1530/100 ms, before chemotherapy and after the 3rd cycle. 1H MRS was processed in LCmodel. RESULTS: Of 20 patients, 7 responded to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and 13 did not. In responders, the mean concentration of tCho before therapy was 4.7±2.5 mmol/kg, which showed statistically significant reduction after therapy. In non-responders, the mean tCho concentration before therapy was 2.9±0.9 mmol/kg which remained the same or increased after the 3rd cycle of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (2.7±2.5 mmol/kg; range from 2.05 to 5.79 with no statistical significance). Compared to reference healthy group, tCho concentrations were increased in all cases. CONCLUSIONS: 1H MRS appears to be valuable technique for evaluation of response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy of patients with musculoskeletal tumors (MSK).

RESUMO

The aim of this research was to determine the serum dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) activity as well as the percentages of CD26 + lymphocytes and CD26 + overall white blood cells in patients with hematological malignancies: non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), leukemia, plasmacytoma and multiple myeloma, and in healthy individuals. Data from our study showed significantly decreased serum DPPIV activity and a significant decrease in the percentage of: CD26 + lymphocytes, CD26 + overall white blood cells and lymphocytes in patients with NHL in comparison to healthy controls. Patients with leukemia had a statistically significant lower activity of DPPIV in serum and significant decrease in the percentage of CD26 + lymphocytes in relation to healthy controls. Furthermore, significantly decreased DPPIV serum activity associated with a significantly reduced percentage of CD26 + overall white blood cells and percentage of lymphocytes was found in patients with multiple myeloma when compared to the healthy control group. The obtained results indicate that immune disturbances that can occur in hematological malignancies might be related to the decreased expression and activity of CD26/DPPIV that we observed.
