RESUMO

The development of nanofibers is expected to foster the creation of outstanding lightweight nanocomposites and flexible and transparent composites for applications such as optoelectronics. However, the reduced length of existing nanofibers and nanotubes limits mechanical strengthening and effective manufacturing. Here, we present an innovative method that produces glass nanofibers with lengths that are, effectively, unlimited by the process. The method uses a combination of a high-power laser with a supersonic gas jet. We describe the experimental setup and the physical processes involved, and, with the aid of a mathematical simulation, identify and discuss the key parameters which determine its distinctive features and feasibility. This method enabled the production of virtually unlimited long, solid, and nonporous glass nanofibers that display outstanding flexibility and could be separately arranged and weaved.

RESUMO

The proximity of the "post-antibiotic era", where infections and minor injuries could be a cause of death, there are urges to seek an alternative for the cure of infectious diseases. Copper nanoparticles and their huge potential as a bactericidal agent could be a solution. In this work, Cu and Cu oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by laser ablation in open air and in argon atmosphere using 532 and 1064 nm radiation generated by nanosecond and picosecond Nd:YVO4 lasers, respectively, to be directly deposited onto Ti substrates. Size, morphology, composition and the crystalline structure of the produced nanoparticles have been studied by the means of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), the energy dispersive spectroscopy of X-rays (EDS), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The UV-VIS absorbance of the thin layer of nanoparticles was also measured, and the antibacterial capacity of the obtained deposits tested against Staphylococcus aureus. The obtained deposits consisted of porous coatings composed of copper and copper oxide nanoparticles interconnected to form chain-like aggregates. The use of the argon atmosphere contributed to reduce significantly the formation of Cu oxide species. The synthesized and deposited nanoparticles exhibited an inhibitory effect upon S. aureus.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional bioactive glass implants were produced by rapid prototyping based on laser cladding without using moulds. CO(2) laser radiation was employed to melt 45S5 and S520 bioactive glass particles and to deposit the material layer by layer following a desired geometry. Controlled thermal input and cooling rate by fine tuning of the processing parameters allowed the production of crack-free fully dense implants. Microstructural characterization revealed chemical composition stability, but crystallization during processing was extensive when 45S5 bioactive glass was used. Improved results were obtained using the S520 bioactive glass, which showed limited surface crystallization due to an expanded sintering window (the difference between the glass transition temperature and crystallization onset temperature). Ion release from the S520 implants in Tris buffer was similar to that of amorphous 45S5 bioactive glass prepared by casting in graphite moulds. Laser processed S520 scaffolds were not cytotoxic in vitro when osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured with the dissolution products of the glasses; and the MC3T3-E1 cells attached and spread well when cultured on the surface of the materials.

RESUMO

Endothelial dysfunction associated with both menopause and hypertension could be one of the possible explanations for increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in hypertensive postmenopausal women. The aim of the present study was to investigate the long-term effect of menopause (bilateral ovariectomy) on endothelial function in isolated aortic rings of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Aortic rings were suspended in organ chambers filled with physiological salt solution (95% O2, 5% CO2, 37 degrees C), and isometric tension was measured. In studies designed to assess the tone-related release of nitric oxide (NO) from phenylephrine-precontracted aortic rings, we found that vasoconstriction induced by L-NAME was greater in aortic rings from sham-ovariectomized SHR (SHAM SHR) than in those obtained from ovariectomized SHR (OVX SHR). Concentration-related relaxant responses to superoxide dismutase were significantly greater in the SHAM SHR than in the OVX SHR. In contrast, receptor-mediated release of NO was not altered by ovariectomy, as deduced from acetylcholine (ACh) concentration-responses curves. Responses to the exogenous NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) were also identical in both ovariectomized and sham-ovariectomized groups, ruling out differences in smooth muscle reactivity to NO. These results show that NO release is impaired in OVX SHR, an animal model of simultaneous hypertension and menopause.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of Fournier's gangrene. The CT findings confirmed the diagnosis and showed the extent of the lesion. METHODS/RESULTS: A young, male alcoholic developed Fournier's gangrene after an episode of urinary tract infection. The extent of the lesion observed on CT correlated with the surgical findings. CONCLUSION: CT evaluation of patients with Fournier's gangrene is advocated. In the case described herein, the extent of the lesion observed on CT correlated with the surgical findings.

RESUMO

The population of Cabo Verde was founded in the fifteenth century (1462), on the basis of slaves brought from the West African coast and a few Europeans, mainly from Portugal. The polymorphism of six red cell enzymes (ADA, AK1, ALAD, ESD, GLO1, and PGD) and ten plasma proteins (AHSG, BF, F13A, F13B, GC, HP, ORM, PLG, TBG, and TF) was studied in a sample of 268 individuals from Cabo Verde (West Africa). There is no statistical evidence of genetic heterogeneity between the two groups of islands which constitute the archipelago, Barlavento and Sotavento. The gene frequency distribution observed in Cabo Verde differs, in many markers, from that of West African populations, suggesting an important European influence. The proportion of Caucasian genes in the population of Cabo Verde has been calculated to be M = 0.3634 +/- 0.0510, and the considerable dispersion of the locus-specific admixture estimates seems to indicate random drift has also played a role in the evolution of the allele frequencies in the archipelago. Partition of the variance of the mean estimate in evolutionary and sampling variance shows the evolutionary variance is more than ten times higher than the sampling variance. When dendrograms are constructed on the basis of different genetic distances, the population of Cabo Verde clusters with Afro-Americans, forming a different group from the populations of the African continent. This is interpreted as a consequence of the importance of Caucasian admixture both in Afro-Americans and in the population of Cabo Verde.

RESUMO

The genetic polymorphism of six red cell enzymes (ADA, AK1, ALAD, ESD, GLO1, and PGD) and 10 plasma proteins (AHSG, BF, F13A, F13B, GC, HP, ORM, PLG, TBG, and TF) is analyzed in a sample of 268 unrelated individuals from Cabo Verde (West Africa). The population of Cabo Verde was founded in the 15th century (1462), on the basis of a great number of slaves brought from the West African coast and a few Europeans, mainly from Portugal. The frequencies found in Cabo Verde for the majority of the markers are intermediate between those reported for Africans and Europeans. Further, the presence of alleles which are rarely or never seen in Blacks, but are common in Caucasians, suggest a substantial contribution of Europeans to the gene pool of the population of Cabo Verde. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

RESUMO

A new technical modality for the typing of coagulation factor XIIIB (F13B) is described. The determination of F13B phenotypes was carried out from desyalized plasma samples by means of polyacrylamide gel isoelectric focusing (pH range 6-8) followed by immunofixation-silver stain. This method combines high sensitivity, low expenditure, and a single methodology. A genetic analysis on F13B phenotypes in the Galician population is also discussed.

RESUMO

The authors present a case of primitive malignant melanoma of the penis. At the same time they make a review of the world bibliography on this illness, in which they find only 50 cases published. They make a series of comments on the peculiar evolution of the case presented, in comparison to those described. They feel that the most important factor of the case presented is its rarity and the diagnostic difficulties involved.
