RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Family plays a significant role in children's dental and oral health (DOH) elements, such as children's DOH knowledge and practice, the development of children's dental fear and anxiety (DFA), children's dental visits, and children's DOH status. The study aims to address the interrelationship of these elements based on individual and familial socioeconomic and demographic (SED) attributes. METHODS: Given the possibility that the COVID-19 epidemic might alter oral health and disrupt dental care, a systematic literature search from the Scopus and Web of Science library database was limited to the 2017-2019 peer-reviewed published literature, which includes quantitative studies that investigated at whether SED status contributed to children's DOH elements. Four sets of keywords are combined in both library database literature searches. Using the PRISMA-ScR Checklist as a reference, we conduct this scoping review. RESULTS: A total of 15 studies were included. Studies were from Brazil, Iran, China, India, Indonesia, Peru, Portugal, and UK. The socioeconomic characteristics include parental education, income, employment, assets and home ownership, type of residence, and health insurance coverage. The demographic characteristics include parent's age, children's age, the number of family members, and family type. There were 13 studies observing parent's education, seven examining family income, four identifying parental employment, three measuring family assets, six assessing the type of residence, and one recording health insurance coverage. Few studies assessed socioeconomic proxies such as school type, free school lunches, and social networks. In addition, race, the number of household members, the number of children, and family type were measured in at least one of the literature. CONCLUSION: Family SED characteristics may define a pathway to children's DOH elements.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of gargling the solution of ant nest extract against plaque formation in children who experience Early Childhood Caries (ECC) when used as a mouthwash. Material and Methods: This study uses a pretest-posttest design with a control group. Thirty children with ECC, which were divided into three groups, namely the treatment group which was given a solution of extracts of ant nests concentrations of 5% and 10% and the control group gargling Aquades. Plaque scores were measured using the Greene and Vermillon method before and after the intervention. The paired t-test was used, with a significance level of 0.05 Results: Significant differences were found before and after the treatment of ant nest extract (r<0.05). The increase in OHI-S mean in the control group before treatment was 2.41 ± 0.72 and after treatment 2.53 ± 0.69 while in the treatment group there was a decrease in the OHI-S average in the group of 5% before treatment 2.66 ± 0.90 and after treatment 2.29 ± 0.95 and group concentration of 10% before treatment 2.51 ± 0.89 and after treatment 1.82 ± 0.75 Conclusion: The distribution of ant nest extract solution extract with the concentration of 5% and 10% would be more effective with ant nest concentration of 10% where it can inhibit dental plaque formation, and there is a significant difference in mean plaque scores between the control group and the treatment groups.

Garlic (Allium sativum) has been used for traditional medicine since ages. It has many uses such as an antioxidant, antiseptic, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-cancer, anti-aging, reduce the risk of heart disease, and antibacterial1. Aim: This study was designed to evaluate the inhibition and eradication ability for garlic against Streptococcus mutans, the bacteria that cause dental caries. Methods: Garlic extract was obtained from Ciwidey garlic maseration process in etanol 96%. MIC was a test to measure the inhibition ability of garlic extract against Streptococcus mutans in planktonic form, and MBIC in biofilms form. MBEC was a test to measure the eradication ability of garlic extract against Streptococcus mutans in biofilms form. Statistic analysis using ANOVA followed by post hoc with ρ value <0.05. Results: The garlic extract showed MIC value at 9.39 % and MBIC value at 37.5 % but was not observed to have eradication activity against Streptococcus mutans in biofilms form up to concentration 37.5%. Conclusion: Garlic extract inhibit Streptococcus mutans both in planktonic and biofilm form. Garlic extract has no eradication activity against Streptococcus mutans in biofilms form up to concentration 37.5% (AU)
