Impact Factor: myths and realities.

The Impact Factor was originally devised as an index of the quality of scientific journals and has since obtained mythical proportions. Authors select journals to which they submit their work on the basis of that journal's Impact Factor. Medical school deans and administrators have adopted the Impact Factor as a means of judging the quality of the academic efforts of individual faculty, as well as the aggregate academic productivity of medical school departments. Departmental budgets have been based on the Impact Factor. There are serious questions as to the validity of using the Impact Factor for these purposes.

Osteochondritis dissecans of the tibial plafond: imaging characteristics and a review of the literature.

UNLABELLED: OBJECTIVE; Osteochondritis dissecans of the talar articular surface of the ankle joint has been well described. We report the imaging characteristics of osteochondritis dissecans of the tibial articular surface (tibial plafond). CONCLUSION: Osteochondritis dissecans of the tibial plafond is a rare condition that may not be detectable on radiography. Its radiologic findings are similar to those of osteochondritis dissecans located elsewhere in the body.

Osteochondritis dissecans of the tarsal navicular bone: imaging findings in four patients.

We report the imaging characteristics of osteochondritis dissecans of the tarsal navicular bone in four cases and review the current literature. Its radiological findings are similar to osteochondritis dissecans found in other sites: focal lucency that disrupts the sharp cortical line, the presence of sclerosis, and cortical depression.
