RESUMO

It is reported the synthesis, characterization by elemental analysis, thermogravimetry; electronic absorption, infrared, excitation, and emission spectroscopies of the [Eu(12C4)(phen)2(X)n]X2 complexes, where 12C4 = 12-crown-4, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, and X  = F-, Cl-, Br-, SCN-, ClO4-, and NO3-. It is verified that the polarizability of the anion X- exerts remarkable effects on the emission process. As a general trend, lower wavenumbers for the 7F0→5L6, 7F0→5D2 and 7F0→5D1 transitions are associated with the anions with higher volumes and, consequently, higher polarizability. The molecular modeling results performed with quantum methods (RHF and DFT) suggest some relationships between the calculated structures, electronic, and luminescence properties with the presence of the LMCT (ligand-to-metal charge transfer) states, which explains the differences in the emission spectra of these complexes due to the coordinated anion.

RESUMO

AIM: In this study, we intend to compare two different setup procedures for female breast cancer patients. BACKGROUND: Imaging in radiotherapy provides a precise localization of the tumour, increasing the accuracy of the treatment delivery in breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty breast cancer patients who underwent whole breast radiotherapy (WBRT) were selected for this study. Patients were divided into two groups of ten. Group one (G1) was positioned by tattoos and then the patient positioning was adjusted with the aid of AlignRT (Vision RT, London, UK). In group two (G2), patients were positioned only by tattoos. For both groups, the first 15 fractions were analyzed, a daily kilovoltage (kV) cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) image was made and then the rotational and translational displacements and, posteriorly, the systematic (Σ) and random (σ) errors were analyzed. RESULTS: The comparison of CBCT displacements for the two groups showed a statistically significant difference in the translational left-right (LR) direction (ρ = 0.03), considering that the procedure with AlignRT system has smaller lateral displacements. The results of systematic (Σ) and random (σ) errors showed that for translational displacements the group positioned only by tattoos (G2) demonstrated higher values of errors when compared with the group positioned with the aid of AlignRT (G1). CONCLUSIONS: AlignRT could help the positioning of breast cancer patients; however, it should be used with another imaging method.

Selective eating is known by food refusal, lack of appetite and interest in food. It is atypical behavior of preschool, but when present in adverse family environments, can perpetuate and remain until adolescence. This paper is a case report of a patient with diagnosis of selective eating that seeks for specialized treatment center for eating disorders at 14 years old. The particularity of this case is the fast and good evolution, possibly due to the desire to treat himself and the support received by the family. The case points out the importance of identifying earlier and correctly cases of selectivity so they will be submitted as soon as possible to professionals specialized in treatment of eating disorders in different developmental stages of childhood and adolescence, resulting in a better prognosis framework.

RESUMO

In many Eu(III)-based materials, the presence of an intermediate energy level, such as ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) states or defects, that mediates the energy transfer mechanisms can strongly affect the lifetime of the (5)D(0) state, mainly at near-resonance (large transfer rates). We present results for the dependence of the (5)D(0) lifetime on the excitation wavelength for a wide class of Eu(III)-based compounds: ionic salts, polyoxometalates (POMs), core/shell inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and nanotubes, coordination polymers, ß-diketonate complexes, organic-inorganic hybrids, macro-mesocellular foams, functionalized mesoporous silica, and layered double hydroxides (LDHs). This yet unexplained behavior is successfully modelled by a coupled set of rate equations with seven states, in which the wavelength dependence is simulated by varying the intramolecular energy transfer rates. In addition, the simulations of the rate equations for four- and three-level systems show a strong dependence of the emission lifetime upon the excitation wavelength if near-resonant non-radiative energy transfer processes are present, indicating that the proposed scheme can be generalized to other trivalent lanthanide ions, as observed for Tb(III)/Ce(III). Finally, the proper use of lifetime definition in the presence of energy transfer is emphasized.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a non-pharmacological intervention for weight gain management in severe mental disorders. METHOD: An open, multicentre interventional study was conducted in 93 mental health services. Patients concerned with weight gain were included in this study and received a 12-week 1-hour group intervention focused on nutrition counseling, lifestyle, physical activity and self-esteem. Weight, waist circumference and blood pressure were measured before and after the intervention. RESULTS: 1,071 patients were enrolled in the study, and 73.9% completed the 12-week intervention. Significant weight loss (Mean difference: 0.41, CI 95%: 0.18 to 0.64, p = 0.001) and a significant BMI reduction (Mean difference: 0.13, CI 95%: 0.04 to 0.22, p = 0.006) were observed. During the intervention 37 (4.4%) patients lost > 7% of their initial weight, 780 (92.5%) maintained their weight, and 26 (3.1%) of the patients had a meaningful weight gain (> 7%). There was a significant increase in the proportion of patients undertaking physical activity after the intervention (70.8%, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: In this 3-month open study we found a small weight and waist reduction, and increased physical activity practice, suggesting a trend towards anthropometric profile improvement. However, further randomized-controlled trials are necessary to evaluate the efficacy and clinical relevance of this psychosocial intervention for weight gain.

8-Quinolyl phosphate (8QP) in the presence of the trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln = La, Sm, Eu, Tb, and Er) forms a [Ln x 8QP]+ complex where the lanthanide ion catalyzes hydrolysis of 8QP. In reactions with Tb3+ or Er3+, there is evidence of limited intervention by a second lanthanide ion. Rate constants are increased by more than 10(7)-fold, and kinetic data and B3LYP/ECP calculations indicate that the effects are largely driven by leaving group and metaphosphate ion stabilization. The lanthanides favor a single-step D(N)A(N) mechanism with a dissociative transition state, with limited nucleophilic assistance, consistent with the low hydroxide ion dependence and the small kinetic effect of Ln3+ radii.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To report the radiological findings of retroperitoneal paragangliomas. METHODS: A patient who presents with colic pain and undergoes intravenous urography and CT scan. RESULTS: KUB x-ray revealed an increase of radiodensity on the left flank. The urography showed a partially obstructive urinary lithiasis in the proximal third of the left ureter with a mass effect laterally displacing pelvis and ureter. The study was completed with an i.v. contrast abdominal CT scan which showed a left para-aortic solid mass under the kidney with heterogeneous contrast uptake. CONCLUSIONS: The correlation of symptoms and catecholamine levels is the best way to guide the etiological diagnosis after CT scan.
