RESUMO

Linear gold complexes of the "carbene-metal-amide" (CMA) type are prepared with a rigid benzoguanidine amide donor and various carbene ligands. These complexes emit in the deep-blue range at 424 and 466 nm with 100% quantum yields in all media. The deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) originates from a charge transfer state (CT) with an excited state lifetime as low as 213 ns, resulting in fast radiative rates of 4.7 × 106 s-1. The high thermal and photo-stability of these CMA materials enabled us to fabricate highly energy efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) in host-guest architectures. We report deep-blue OLED devices with electroluminescence at 416 nm and 457 nm with practical external quantum efficiencies of up to 23% at 100 cd m-2 with excellent colour coordinates CIE (x; y) = 0.16; 0.07 and 0.17; 0.18. The operating stability of these OLEDs is the longest reported to date (LT50 = 1 hour) for deep-blue CMA emitters, indicating a high promise for further development of blue OLED devices. Our findings inform the molecular design strategy and correlation between delayed luminescence with high radiative rates and CMA OLED device operating stability. Carbene-metal-amides (CMAs) are emerging delayed fluorescence materials for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) applications. CMAs possess fast, efficient emission owing to rapid forward and reverse intersystem crossing (ISC) rates. The resulting dynamic equilibrium between singlet and triplet spin manifolds distinguishes CMAs from most purely organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters. However, direct experimental triplet characterization in CMAs is underutilized, limiting our detailed understanding of the ISC mechanism. In this work, we combine time-resolved spectroscopy with tuning of state energies through environmental polarity and metal substitution, focusing on the interplay between charge-transfer (3CT) and local exciton (3LE) triplets. Unlike previous photophysical work, we investigate evaporated host:guest films of CMAs and small-molecule hosts for increased device relevance. Transient absorption reveals an evolution in the triplet excited-state absorption (ESA) consistent with a change in orbital character between hosts with differing dielectric constants. Using quantum chemical calculations, we simulate ESAs of the lowest triplet states, highlighting the contribution of only 3CT and donor-moiety 3LE states to spectral features, with no strong evidence for a low-lying acceptor-centered 3LE. Thus, our work provides a blueprint for understanding the role of triplet excited states in CMAs which will enable further intelligent optimization of this promising class of materials.

BACKGROUND: Clinically detected atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a significant increase in mortality and other adverse cardiovascular events. Since the advent of effective methods for AF rhythm control, investigators have attempted to determine how much these adverse prognostic AF effects could be mitigated by the restoration of sinus rhythm (SR) and whether the method used mattered. METHODS: The CABANA trial (Catheter Ablation versus Antiarrhythmic Drug Therapy for Atrial Fibrillation) randomized 2204 AF patients to ablation versus drug therapy, of which 1240 patients were monitored in follow-up using the CABANA ECG rhythm monitoring system. To assess the prognostic benefits of SR, we performed a prespecified analysis using Cox survival modeling with heart rhythm as a time-dependent variable and a randomized treatment group as a stratification factor. RESULTS: In the 1240 patient study cohort, 883 (71.2%) had documented AF at some point during their postblanking follow-up. Among the 883 patients, 671 (76.0%) experienced AF within the first year of postblanking follow-up, and 212 (24.0%) experienced their first AF after ≥1 year of postblanking follow-up. The primary CABANA end point (death, disabling stroke, serious bleeding, or cardiac arrest) occurred in 95 (10.8%) of the 883 patients with documented AF and in 29 (8.1%) of the 357 patients with no AF recorded during follow-up. In multivariable time-dependent analysis, the presence of SR (compared with non-SR) was associated with a significantly reduced risk of the primary end point (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.57 [95% CI, 0.38-0.85]; P=0.006; independent of treatment strategy [ablation versus drugs]). Corresponding results for all-cause mortality were adjusted hazard ratio of 0.59 [95% CI, 0.35-1.01]; P=0.053). CONCLUSIONS: In patients in the CABANA trial with detailed long-term rhythm follow-up, increased time in SR was associated with a clinically consequential decreased in mortality and other adverse prognostic events. The predictive value of SR was independent of the therapeutic approach responsible for reducing the burden of detectable AF. OBJECTIVE: Lung transplantation remains limited by the shortage of healthy organs. Cross-circulation with a healthy swine recipient provides a durable physiologic environment to recover injured donor lungs. In a clinical application, a recipient awaiting lung transplantation could be placed on cross-circulation to recover damaged donor lungs, enabling eventual transplantation. Our objective was to assess the ability of recipient swine with respiratory compromise to tolerate cross-circulation and support recovery of donor lungs subjected to extended cold ischemia. METHODS: Swine donor lungs (n = 6) were stored at 4 °C for 24 hours while recipient swine (n = 6) underwent gastric aspiration injury before cross-circulation. Longitudinal multiscale analyses (blood gas, bronchoscopy, radiography, histopathology, cytokine quantification) were performed to evaluate recipient swine and extracorporeal lungs on cross-circulation. RESULTS: Recipient swine lung injury resulted in sustained, impaired oxygenation (arterial oxygen tension/inspired oxygen fraction ratio 205 ± 39 mm Hg vs 454 ± 111 mm Hg at baseline). Radiographic, bronchoscopic, and histologic assessments demonstrated bilateral infiltrates, airway cytokine elevation, and significantly worsened lung injury scores. Recipient swine provided sufficient metabolic support for extracorporeal lungs to demonstrate robust functional improvement (0 hours, arterial oxygen tension/inspired oxygen fraction ratio 138 ± 28.2 mm Hg; 24 hours, 539 ± 156 mm Hg). Multiscale analyses demonstrated improved gross appearance, aeration, and cellular regeneration in extracorporeal lungs by 24 hours. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrate that acutely injured recipient swine tolerate cross-circulation and enable recovery of donor lungs subjected to extended cold storage. This proof-of-concept study supports feasibility of cross-circulation for recipients with isolated lung disease who are candidates for this clinical application.

A series of carbene-gold-acetylide complexes [(BiCAAC)AuCC]n C6 H5- n (n = 1, Au1; n = 2, Au2; n = 3, Au3; BiCAAC = bicyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene) have been synthesized in high yields. Compounds Au1-Au3 exhibit deep-blue to blue-green phosphorescence with good quantum yields up to 43% in all media. An increase of the (BiCAAC)Au moieties in gold complexes Au1-Au3 increases the extinction coefficients in the UV-vis spectra and stronger oscillator strength coefficients supported by theoretical calculations. The luminescence radiative rates decrease with an increase of the (BiCAAC)Au moieties. The time-dependent density functional theory study supports a charge-transfer nature of the phosphorescence due to the large (0.5-0.6 eV) energy gap between singlet excited (S1 ) and triplet excited (T1 ) states. Transient luminescence study reveals the presence of both nonstructured UV prompt-fluorescence and vibronically resolved long-lived phosphorescence 428 nm. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) are fabricated by physical vapor deposition with 2,8-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)dibenzo[b,d]furan (PPF) as a host material with complex Au1. The near-UV electroluminescence is observed at 405 nm with device efficiency of 1% while demonstrating OLED device lifetime LT50 up to 20 min at practical brightness of 10 nits, indicating a highly promising class of materials to develop stable UV-OLEDs.

Copper-centered carbene-metal-halides (CMHs) with cyclic (alkyl)(amino) carbenes (CAACs) are bright phosphorescent emitters and key precursors in the synthesis of the highly promising class of the materials carbene-metal-amides (CMAs) operating via thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Aiming to reveal the molecular geometry for CMH phosphors in the absence of the intermolecular contacts, we report here the equilibrium molecular structure of the (CAAC)Cu(I)Cl (1) molecule in the gas-phase. We demonstrate that linear geometry around a copper atom shows no distortions in the ground state. The structure of complex 1 has been determined using the electron diffraction method, supported by quantum chemical calculations with RI-MP2/def2-QZVPP level of theory and compared with the crystal structure determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Mean vibrational amplitudes, uij,h1, and anharmonic vibrational corrections (rij,e • rij,a) were calculated for experimental temperature T = 20 °C, using quadratic and cubic force constants, respectively. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and natural bond order (NBO) analysis of wave function at MN15/def2TZVP level of theory revealed two Cu…H, three H…H, and one three-center H…H…H bond paths with bond critical points. NBO analysis also revealed three-center, four-electron hyperbonds, (3c4e), [π(N-C) nπ(Cu) ↔ nπ(N) π(N-Cu)], or [N-C: Cu ↔ N: C-Cu] and nπ(Cu) → π(C-N)* hyperconjugation, that is the delocalization of the lone electron pair of Cu atom into the antibonding orbital of C-N bond.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is a pivotal part of ablative therapy for atrial fibrillation (AF). Currently, there are multiple techniques available to realize PVI, including: manual-guided cryoballoon (MAN-CB), manual-guided radiofrequency (MAN-RF), and robotic magnetic navigation-guided radiofrequency ablation (RMN-RF). There is a lack of large prospective trials comparing contemporary RMN-RF with the more conventional ablation techniques. This study prospectively compared three catheter ablation techniques as treatment of paroxysmal AF. METHODS: This multicenter, prospective study included patients with paroxysmal AF who underwent their first ablation procedure. Procedural parameters (including procedural efficiency), complication rates, and freedom of AF during 12-month follow-up, were compared between three study groups which were defined by the utilized ablation technique. RESULTS: A total of 221 patients were included in this study. Total procedure time was significantly shorter in MAN-CB (78 ± 21 min) compared to MAN-RF (115 ± 41 min; p < .001) and compared to RMN-RF (129 ± 32 min; p < .001), whereas it was comparable between the two radiofrequency (RF) groups (p = .062). A 3% complication rate was observed, which was comparable between all groups. At 12-month follow-up, AF recurrence was observed in 40 patients (19%) and was significantly lower in the robotic group (MAN-CB 19 [24%], MAN-RF 16 [23%], RMN-RF 5 [8%] AF recurrences, p = .045) (multivariate hazard ratio of RMN-RF on AF recurrence 0.32, 95% confidence interval: 0.12-0.87, p = .026). CONCLUSION: RMN-guided PVI results in high freedom of AF in patients with paroxysmal AF, when compared to cryoablation and manual RF ablation. Cryoablation remains the most time-efficient ablation technique, whereas RMN nowadays has comparable efficiency with manual RF ablation.

Organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have been widely investigated due to their impressive electronic properties and applied potential for the third generation of organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). We present organic TADF material (4BGIPN) based on the strained benzoguanidine donor and compare it with the benchmark carbazole-based material (4CzIPN). Extended π-conjugation in 4BGIPN material results in yellow-green luminescence at 512 nm with a fast radiative rate of 5.5 × 10-5 s-1 and a photoluminescence quantum yield of 46% in methylcyclohexane solution. Such a nitrogen-rich 4BGIPN material has a significantly stabilized highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) at -6.4 eV while the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) at -4.0 eV, indicating potential suitability for application as the electron transport layer or TADF class III emitter in OLEDs.

Molecules present a versatile platform for quantum information science1,2 and are candidates for sensing and computation applications3,4. Robust spin-optical interfaces are key to harnessing the quantum resources of materials5. To date, carbon-based candidates have been non-luminescent6,7, which prevents optical readout via emission. Here we report organic molecules showing both efficient luminescence and near-unity generation yield of excited states with spin multiplicity S > 1. This was achieved by designing an energy resonance between emissive doublet and triplet levels, here on covalently coupled tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) methyl-carbazole radicals and anthracene. We observed that the doublet photoexcitation delocalized onto the linked acene within a few picoseconds and subsequently evolved to a pure high-spin state (quartet for monoradical, quintet for biradical) of mixed radical-triplet character near 1.8 eV. These high-spin states are coherently addressable with microwaves even at 295 K, with optical readout enabled by reverse intersystem crossing to emissive states. Furthermore, for the biradical, on return to the ground state the previously uncorrelated radical spins either side of the anthracene shows strong spin correlation. Our approach simultaneously supports a high efficiency of initialization, spin manipulations and light-based readout at room temperature. The integration of luminescence and high-spin states creates an organic materials platform for emerging quantum technologies.

Gold-centered carbene-metal-amides (CMAs) containing cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs) are promising emitters for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Aiming at the design and optimization of new TADF emitters, we report a density functional theory study of over 60 CMAs with various CAAC ligands, systematically evaluating computed parameters in relation to photoluminescence properties. The CMA structures were primarily selected based on experimental synthesis prospects. We demonstrate that TADF efficiency of the CMA materials originates from a compromise between oscillator strength coefficients and exchange energy (ΔEST). The latter is governed by the overlap of HOMO and LUMO orbitals, where HOMO is localized on the amide and LUMO over the Au-carbene bond. The S0 ground and excited T1 states of the CMAs adopt approximately coplanar geometry of carbene and amide ligands, but rotate perpendicular in the excited S1 states, resulting in degeneracy or near-degeneracy of S1 and T1, accompanied by a decrease in the S1-S0 oscillator strength from its maximum at coplanar geometries to near zero at rotated geometries. Based on the computations, promising new TADF emitters are proposed and synthesized. Bright CMA complex (Et2CAAC)Au(carbazolide) is obtained and fully characterized in order to demonstrate that excellent stability and high radiative rates up to 106 s-1 can be obtained for the gold-CMA complexes with small CAAC-carbene ligands.

Arctic rivers are receiving increased attention for their contributing of mercury (Hg) to the Arctic Ocean. Despite this, the knowledge on both the terrestrial release sources and the levels of Hg in the rivers are limited. Within the Arctic, the Barents region has a high industrial development, including multiple potential Hg release sources. This study presents the first overview of potential Hg release sources on Norwegian and Russian mainland draining to the Barents Sea. Source categories cover mining and metallurgy industry; historical pulp and paper production; municipal and industrial solid waste handling; fossil fuel combustion; and past military activities. Available data on Hg in freshwater bodies near the identified potential release sources are reviewed. Levels of Hg were occasionally exceeding the national pollution control limits, thereby posing concern to the local human population and wildlife. However, the studies were sparse and often unsystematic. Finally, we present new data of Hg measured in five Barents rivers. These data reveal strong seasonality in the Hg levels, with a total annual flux constituting 2% of the panarctic total. With this new insight we aspire to contribute to the international efforts of reducing Hg pollution, such as through the effective implementation of the Minamata Convention. Future studies documenting Hg in exposed Barents freshwater bodies are warranted.

The optimal approach for prevention of cardiovascular events and reduction of bleeding in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and atrial fibrillation (AF) is still controversial. The aim of our study is to asses our single-center experience with concomitant left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). 50 patients with ACS without ST elevation and history of AF were randomized after successful PCI to LAAO or conventional medical therapy. The primary endpoints were safety and length of hospitalization. The follow-up period was 30 days. The mean procedural times were 113 ± 23 min PCI + LAAO implantation and 39 ± 19 min of PCI only (p < 0.001), while mean fluoroscopy times were 18 ± 8 min and 12 ± 8 min (p < 0.001), respectively. No procedure-related complications were observed. There was no difference observed for length of hospitalization between two groups. LAAO in patients with ACS and AF undergoing PCI appears safe.

Background: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) has been considered as one of the probable triggers of atrial fibrillation (AF). CT-rediomics is a perspective noninvasive method of assessment of EAT. We evaluate the radiomic phenotype of EAT in patients with lone AF in the prognosis of AF recurrence after catheter ablation. Methods: A total of 43 patients with lone AF referred for CA and 20 out-hospital patients without arrhythmia underwent multidetector computed tomography coronary angiography. Segmentation of EAT and extraction radiomic features were performed on calcium scoring series using by 3D-Slicer. Clinical follow-up was performed for 12 months period after the CA. Results: EAT in patients with lone AF had a distinct radiomic phenotype. Thus, 45 of 93 calculated radiomic features, volume and attenuation of EAT were significantly different between patients with lone AF and persons without any arrhythmia. In addition, 17 radiomic features were significantly different in subgroups with and without AF recurrence. Multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that only gray level nonuniformity normalized (GLSZM) was an independent predictor of AF recurrence (OR 1.0027, 95%CI 1.0009-1.0044, p = 0.002). ROC analysis data showed that GLSZM >1227.4 indicates high probability of AF recurrence during 12 months (sensitivity 89.4%, specificity 70.8%, AUC: 0.809; p = 0.001). Conclusion: The radiomic parameter GLSZM is associated with late AF recurrence after CA in patients with lone AF. In current study GLSZM was a stronger predictor of lone AF recurrence in multivariate analysis comparing with other established risk factors and EAT volume and attenuation.

Carbene-metal-amides (CMAs) are an emerging class of photoemitters based on a linear donor-linker-acceptor arrangement. They exhibit high flexibility about the carbene-metal and metal-amide bonds, leading to a conformational freedom which has a strong influence on their photophysical properties. Herein we report CMA complexes with (1) nearly coplanar, (2) twisted, (3) tilted, and (4) tilt-twisted orientations between donor and acceptor ligands and illustrate the influence of preferred ground-state conformations on both the luminescence quantum yields and excited-state lifetimes. The performance is found to be optimum for structures with partially twisted and/or tilted conformations, resulting in radiative rates exceeding 1 × 106 s-1. Although the metal atoms make only small contributions to HOMOs and LUMOs, they provide sufficient spin-orbit coupling between the low-lying excited states to reduce the excited-state lifetimes down to 500 ns. At the same time, high photoluminescence quantum yields are maintained for a strongly tilted emitter in a host matrix. Proof-of-concept organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on these new emitter designs were fabricated, with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 19.1% with low device roll-off efficiency. Transient electroluminescence studies indicate that molecular design concepts for new CMA emitters can be successfully translated into the OLED device.

In our previous study, we showed that discarded cardiac tissue from the right atrial appendage and right ventricular myocardium is an available source of functional endothelial and smooth muscle cells for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. In the study, we aimed to find out what benefits are given by vascular cells from cardiac explants used for seeding on vascular patches engrafted to repair vascular defects in vivo. Additionally, to make the application of these cells safer in regenerative medicine we tested an in vitro approach that arrested mitotic division to avoid the potential tumorigenic effect of dividing cells. A tissue-engineered construction in the form of a patch based on a polycaprolactone-gelatin scaffold and seeded with endothelial and smooth muscle cells was implanted into the abdominal aorta of immunodeficient SCID mice. Aortic patency was assessed using ultrasound, MRI, immunohistochemical and histological staining. Endothelial and smooth muscle cells were treated with mitomycin C at a therapeutic concentration of 10 µg/ml for 2 h with subsequent analysis of cell proliferation and function. The absence of the tumorigenic effect of mitomycin C-treated cells, as well as their angiogenic potential, was examined by injecting them into immunodeficient mice. Cell-containing patches engrafted in the abdominal aorta of immunodeficient mice form the vessel wall loaded with the appropriate cells and extracellular matrix, and do not interfere with normal patency. Endothelial and smooth muscle cells treated with mitomycin C show no tumorigenic effect in the SCID immunodeficient mouse model. During in vitro experiments, we have shown that treatment with mitomycin C does not lead to a decrease in cell viability. Despite the absence of proliferation, mitomycin C-treated vascular cells retain specific cell markers, produce specific extracellular matrix, and demonstrate the ability to stimulate angiogenesis in vivo. We pioneered an approach to arresting cell division with mitomycin C in endothelial and smooth muscle cells from cardiac explant, which prevents the risk of malignancy from dividing cells in vascular surgery. We believe that this approach to the fabrication of tissue-engineered constructs based on mitotically inactivated cells from waste postoperative material may be valuable to bring closer the development of safe cell products for regenerative medicine.

Based on the study of recent scientific literature devoted to neovascularization and angiogenesis in malignant neoplasms, it was concluded that there are many publications on each of the problems of tumor angiogenesis and vascularization. The formation of blood vessels in a tumor and certain aspects of the prognostic value of the severity of vascularization in almost all forms of cancer are considered. Special attention is paid to the peculiarities of angiogenesis in tumors of the female reproductive system. A large number of vessels in the tumor often indicates a poor prognosis. The influence of various factors on the initiation of angiogenesis and the process itself, as well as the possibility of suppressing such signals to slow down the formation of blood vessels and thus the development of the tumor are widely studied. The results of pharmacological suppression of tumor vessel formation demonstrate a good clinical outcome but one accompanied by a large number of severe adverse side effects. Such a significant amount of studies on each of the problems of tumor vascularization indicates the increasing importance of this area of oncology. At the same time, only a very small number of works are devoted to the study of the differences in angiogenesis and number of vessels between different parts of the tumor, as well as between the primary tumor node and its metastases. The refinement of the results is still to be done. It was noted that the expression of proangiogenic factors in metastases is usually higher than in the source of metastasis, and the expression in lymphogenous metastases is higher than in hematogenous ones.
