Copper is routinely supplemented to weanling pig diets at concentrations above nutritional requirements to enhance growth performance. We hypothesised that this effect depends on the source of Cu and its dietary concentration. We tested this in weaned pigs (26 d of age) over a 35-d period using a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement with two Cu-sources (CuSO4 and Cu2O, monovalent copper oxide, CoRouge®) and three supplementary dietary Cu-levels (15, 80 and 160 mg Cu/kg) as respective factors. Increasing Cu level linearly increased (P < 0.001) final BW and daily gain. These effects tended (P = 0.09) to be greater with Cu2O than CuSO4. Feed conversion ratio decreased linearly (P < 0.001) with increasing dietary Cu content, independent of Cu source. Plasma Cu, Zn and Fe levels were unaffected, whereas liver Cu content increased quadratically (P < 0.001) with increasing dietary Cu content, with a larger increase (P < 0.001) with CuSO4 than Cu2O. Bile Cu content increased quadratically (P = 0.025) with increasing Cu content, irrespective of Cu source. RT-qPCR analysis revealed that increasing Cu content quadratically (P = 0.009) increased duodenal but not ileal metallothionein 1A (MT1A) mRNA, with greater effect (P = 0.010) of CuSO4. Regardless of the Cu source, increasing Cu dose linearly increased (P = 0.006) duodenal DMT1/SLC11A2 mRNA but decreased ZIP4/SLC39A4 mRNA in duodenum (P < 0.001) and ileum (P < 0.005). ZnT10/SLC30A10 mRNA was significantly (P = 0.021) and numerically (P = 0.061) greater with Cu2O compared to CuSO4, in duodenum and ileum, respectively. Copper content quadratically modulated duodenal but not ileal transferrin receptor (P = 0.029) and ferric reductase CYBRD1 mRNA (P = 0.022). In hypothalamus, high Cu dose (P = 0.024) and Cu2O as source (P = 0.028) reduced corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) mRNA. Low versus high CuSO4 increased corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor (CRHR2) mRNA, while low Cu2O had the opposite effect (P = 0.009). In conclusion, incremental Cu intake enhanced growth performance, with a tendency for a greater effect of Cu2O. The lower increase in duodenal MT1A mRNA and liver Cu content indicates that less Cu from Cu2O was absorbed by gut and sequestered in liver. Thus, high Cu absorption is not essential for its growth-promoting effect and dietary Cu may affect intestinal Fe and Zn absorption via the active, transcellular route. The effects on hypothalamic CRH and CRHR2 expression indicate a role for the hypothalamus in mediating the effects of Cu on growth performance.

RESUMO

The Italian patient association for Multiple Osteochondromas, Ollier Disease, and Maffucci Syndrome, Associazione Conto Alla Rovescia-ACAR Aps, conducted a mixed-methods study at its 2023 annual conference. The study included the Open Dialogue Approach and a feedback survey to identify the main priorities in the transitioning process from paediatric to adult healthcare for patients with Multiple Osteochondromas, Ollier Disease, and Maffucci Syndrome. The common needs identified by patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals were coordination and continuity of care, patient empowerment and communication, social and practical support, and transition planning and support. This experience fostered a sense of collaboration and cooperation among stakeholders, helping to build trust and create a shared vision for improving the quality of care for these patients. Furthermore, it could be considered a starting point for other patient associations interested in using different approaches to identify the needs of their members and actively involve all stakeholders.

Background: Knot security of half-knot (H) sequences varies with rotation, but half-knots risk destabilisation. Objectives: To investigate the rotation of half-hitch (S) sequences on knot security. Materials and Methods: The loop and knot security of symmetrical and asymmetrical sliding and blocking half-hitch sequences was measured using a tensiometer. Results: Loop security of symmetrical sliding half-hitch sequences is much higher than asymmetrical sequences, increasing from 6+2 to 21+2 and from 27+6 to 48+5 Newton (N) for 2 and 4 half-hitches respectively (both P<0.0001). Symmetrical sliding sequences are more compact and remain in the same plane, squeezing the passive thread, while asymmetrical sequences rotate loosely around the passive end. Blocking sequences are superior when asymmetrical since changing the passive end acts like changing rotation, transforming the asymmetrical sliding into a symmetrical blocking half-hitch on the new passive thread. The knot security of 2 sliding and 1 blocking half-hitch doubles from 52+3 to 98+2 N for the worst (asymmetric sliding and symmetric blocking, SSaSsb) or best rotation sequences (SSsSab). Adding a second asymmetric blocking half-hitch (Sab) increases security further to 105+3 N. The overall knot security of four-throw, correctly rotated, half-hitch (SSsSabSab) or half-knot (H2H1sH1s, H2H2a and H2H2s) sequences is similar for four suture diameters. Conclusion: Rotation affects the security of half-hitch sequences, which should be symmetrical when sliding, and asymmetrical when blocking. What is new?: Half-hitch sequences are clinically superior to half-knot sequences. They do not risk destabilisation, and loop security improves approximation of tissues under traction, permitting tight knots.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and short and long-term postoperative results of using BTA. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following the recommendations of the PRISMA method. We systematically reviewed the MEDLINE/PubMed and SCOPUS electronic databases for studies published between January 2010 and September 2021. This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO, with registration number CRD42021252445. RESULTS: After applying the selection criteria, 11 relevant articles were selected. The total sample size was 1058 patients. Most studies aimed to assess the rate of fascial closure, followed by the rate of recurrence and reporting of postoperative complications, as well as the need for the components separation technique (CST). None of the studies reported serious complications from using BTA. Regarding fascial closure, all articles had rates above 75%, except for one. Surgical site events ranged between 19% and 29.4%. No recurrence in the group that used BTA was recorded in five studies. The other articles reported recurrence rates ranging from 6.4 to 11.4% in the groups that received BTA. The studies had varying follow-up times ranging from 1 to 49 months, with a mean of 18.6 months (± 11.2). CONCLUSION: This review described most of the key points about the preoperative use of BTA in hernia repair. It can be concluded that the use of BTA is a safe and effective practice that promotes good short and long-term results. However, the limitations of the current literature prevent more accurate conclusions on the subject.

The interaction between climatic conditions and the ability of organisms to maintain homeostasis regulates the distribution of species on the planet. However, its influence on macroevolutionary dynamics is not well understood. It has been suggested that diversification rates will be different in lineages with narrow thermal niches (specialists) to diversification rates in generalist lineages, but the evidence for this is elusive. Here, we tested this hypothesis by using the most diverse (in species richness and geographic range variation) tropical bat genus within the Phyllostomidae family. We estimated the realized thermal niche breadth of Sturnira species from their geographic range and categorized them as generalists, cold specialists, or warm specialists. We compared dynamic evolutionary models that differ in 1) niche breadth evolution, 2) parental niche breadth inheritance, and 3) whether niche breadth evolution is associated with shifts in diversification rates. Our best-performing model indicates that most Sturnira species arose as specialists in warm climates and that over time, their niche breadth broadens, and just a subset of those species becomes specialists in cold environments. We found that the evolution of realized thermal niche breadth causes fluctuations in per-lineage rates of diversification, where warm specialists boast the highest speciation rates. However, we found no evidence of these changes in niche neither triggering nor being a result of speciation events themselves; this suggests that diversification events in Sturnira could instead depend on allopatric speciation processes such as the development of geographic barriers.

Anthropogenic activities drive tropical forest loss and biodiversity decay. However, few studies have addressed how the biodiversity response varies between disturbance-adapted species (i.e., winners) and those highly susceptible to disturbance (i.e., losers), or whether such responses differ between the taxonomic, functional, or phylogenetic dimensions of diversity. Understanding these dynamics can help prevent or buffer biotic homogenization processes. Using a meta-analytical approach with dung beetles as model organisms, we evaluated how anthropogenic habitat disturbances influence the multiple diversity dimensions of winner and loser species relative to conserved forest sites in the Neotropics. Habitats were organized according to a disturbance gradient ranging from second-growth forests, shaded agroforestry, lowly-shaded agroforestry, living fences, and pastures. Our database included 30 studies, from which we calculated nine metrics divided into three alfa diversity aspects: richness, evenness, and divergence. We also evaluated the beta-diversity response to disturbance and forest protection. All dimensions of dung beetle diversity decreased significantly with increasing disturbance levels, with phylogenetic diversity showing the highest losses, whereas evenness metrics increased in second-growth forests and agroforestry systems. Loser dung beetles showed high diversity loss as well as functional and phylogenetic clustering, reflecting a pervasive biotic homogenization in the most severely disturbed habitats, whereas winner species were insensitive to anthropogenic disturbances. Beta diversity increased significantly with disturbance and forest protection. Our study showed that heavy disturbances erode and homogenized all diversity dimensions of loser dung beetles. However, second-growth forests and agroforestry systems mitigated diversity loss and homogenization processes by favoring the coexistence between functional and phylogenetically distant species and maintaining assemblages compositionally similar to those in conserved forests, highlighting their importance for conservation. We encourage natural resource managers to consider protection of disturbed off-reserve forests in management schemes as these are essential for maintaining biodiversity in an increasingly anthropized world.

BACKGROUND: This pilot prospective study investigated the effect of a periodic fasting mimicking diet (FMD) on metabolic health factors in patients with Prostate Cancer (PC). There is a well-documented association between PC and metabolic health. Impaired metabolic health is a significant risk factor for the development of PC, and a metabolic syndrome can be induced by hormonal therapies commonly required for its management. (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04292041). METHODS: We introduced a periodic 4-day FMD -low in calories, sugars, and proteins but high in unsaturated fats -to a cohort of PC patients and features of metabolic syndrome. 29/35 patients completed 3-monthly cycles of the 4-consecutive day packaged FMD. We compared the subjects' baseline weight, abdominal circumference (AC), blood pressure (BP) and selected laboratory results to the same measurements 3-months after completing the FMD cycles. RESULTS: Several important metabolic factors showed improvements post-intervention. On average patients' weights dropped by 3.79 kg (95% CI: -5.61, -1.97, p = 0.0002). AC was reduced on average by 4.57 cm, (95% CI: -2.27, -6.87, p = 0.0003). There was also a decrease in systolic and diastolic BP by 9.52 mmHg (95% CI: -16.16, -2.88, p = 0.0066) and 4.48 mmHg (95% CI: -8.85, -0.43, p = 0.0316) respectively. A sub-analysis indicates that FMD had more relevant effects in 'at-risk' patients than those with normal values of risk factors for metabolic syndrome. For example, subjects with baseline levels of systolic BP > 130 mmHg experienced a greater reduction in BP(-16.04 mmHg, p = 0.0001) than those with baseline systolic BP < 130 mmHg (-0.78 mmHg, p = 0.89). CONCLUSIONS: The FMD cycles were safely introduced to this small cohort of PC patients with little or no observed toxicity, and a high overall compliance of 83%. Analysis of the metabolic variables showed an overall decrease in weight, AC, and BP. Larger clinical trials focused on metabolic risk factors, PC quality of life and progression free survival are needed to assess the effect of the FMD on prostate cancer patients.

INTRODUCTION@#The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent enforcement of enhanced community quarantine in the Philippines has forced residents to stay within the confines of their home, reducing social interaction, and causing changes in the usual routine. The appearance of a novel coronavirus has also brought about an unprecedented period of stress and uncertainty.@*OBJECTIVE@#The primary objective of this study was to determine the perceived stress, sleep patterns, and sleep quality of adult residents of the Philippines during the enhanced community quarantine.@*METHODS@#This was a cross-sectional study which looked at the proportion of adult Filipinos with sleep difficulties during the period of the enhanced community quarantine, together with sleep quality and perceived stress. Three different questionnaires: the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were electronically administered to participants. Their demographic data were also recorded. Correlation between all scores recorded from the Perceived Stress Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were done. All collected data were statistically analyzed through descriptive statistics. Frequency and proportion were used for nominal variables, median and range for ordinal variables, and mean and standard deviation for interval/ratio variables. Pearson's rho/Spearman's rank correlation coefficient were used in determining correlation between PSQI, ISI, and PSS scores.@*RESULTS@#301 participants were included. 64% had poor sleep quality on PSQI, and 73% were under moderate perceived stress. 45.5% were not tagged with clinically significant insomnia, while 36.5% were screened to have subclinical insomnia. Pairwise correlations among the PSQI, PSS, and ISI revealed a moderate positive relationship, where higher PSS, ISI, and PSQI scores correlated with higher scores across the three scoring systems. @*CONCLUSION@#Stress levels were moderately high, and sleep quality was poor during the period of enhanced community quarantine. Majority of participants did not have clinically significant insomnia, but many were found to have subclinical insomnia. Based on our data, higher levels of perceived stress correlated to sleep difficulties and poor sleep quality. These findings suggest that aside from efforts in preventing and treating COVID-19, a premium must also be put on addressing and managing each individual's stress levels and sleep difficulties, and practicing sleep hygiene during the pandemic.

Introduction: The interaction between bats and plants is key to the stability of ecosystems and economically important industries, such as tequila and mescal in Mexico. For these reasons, it's important to determine the current state of knowledge of plant diet of nectar-feeding bats.  In this study, we did a systematic review of literature on plants that have been reported as food for nectar-feeding bats (subfamily Glossophaginae) of Mexico.  Based on this information, we identified bat species with the most complete knowledge of their diet, the most consumed plant genera, and the territories with information gaps for the country.  Materials and methods: The literature search of nectar-feeding bats diet was carried out in the Web of Science database, in Google Scholar and in digital collections of universities.  We constructed rarefaction curves for the richness of the bats' plant diet, a heat map of the genera consumed by species, as well a map of diet localities in the different biogeographic provinces of Mexico, to find out if knowledge of plant diet of bats was related to variables such as size of biogeographic province, presence of chiropterophilic plants or richness of nectar-feeding bats.  Results: The diet of nectar-feeding bats in Mexico was concentrated in the plant genera Agave spp., Pseudobombax spp. and Ceiba spp., which according to the literature provide food to more than 75 % of nectar-feeding bats that inhabit Mexican territory.  Leptonycteris yerbabuenae is the species with the most information on its plant diet in Mexico, while Lichonycteris obscura is the species with the least information.  Any species of bat reached a value greater than 65 % of the expected richness.  Localities where diet of nectar-feeding bats has been mainly studied in provinces corresponding to Neotropical region of the country.  Discussion and Conclusions: Knowledge about diet of nectar-feeding bats in Mexico is far from complete.  The distribution of diet localities is biased in a large part of its geographic distribution, and could be positive correlated with areas with higher bat species richness.


Introducción: La interacción entre los murciélagos y las plantas es clave para la estabilidad de los ecosistemas y para industrias económicamente importantes, como la del tequila y mezcal en México.  Por ello, es importante determinar el estado del conocimiento de la dieta vegetal de los murciélagos nectarívoros.  En este estudio hicimos una revisión sistemática de literatura sobre las plantas que se han reportado como alimento de las especies de murciélagos nectarívoros glosofaginos de México.  A partir de ello, identificamos las especies de murciélagos con mayor completitud en el conocimiento de su dieta, los géneros de plantas más consumidos y los territorios con vacíos de información para el país.  Materiales y métodos: La búsqueda de literatura sobre dieta de glosofaginos se realizó en la base de datos Web of Science, en el buscador Google Scholar y en acervos digitales de universidades.  Construimos curvas de rarefacción de riqueza de la dieta de los murciélagos, un mapa de calor de los géneros consumidos por especie, así como un mapa de las localidades de dieta en las diferentes provincias biogeográficas de México, para saber si el conocimiento de la dieta vegetal de estos murciélagos estaba relacionado con variables como el tamaño de provincia biogeográfica, presencia de plantas quiropterofílicas o riqueza de especies de murciélagos.  Resultados: La dieta de los murciélagos se concentró en los géneros Agave spp., Pseudobombax spp. y Ceiba spp., los cuales proveen de alimento a más del 75 % de las especies de estudio.  Leptonycteris yerbabuenae es la especie con mayor información sobre su dieta vegetal en México, mientras que Lichonycteris obscura es la especie con menos información.  Ninguna especie de murciélago alcanzó un registro mayor al 65 % de la riqueza esperada.  Las localidades donde se ha estudiado la dieta de estos murciélagos se concentran en provincias biogeográficas correspondientes a la región Neotropical del país.  Discusión y Conclusiones: El conocimiento sobre la dieta de nectarívoros glosofaginos en México está lejos de estar completado.  La distribución de localidades de dieta está sesgada en una gran parte de su distribución geográfica y parece relacionarse positivamente con áreas de mayor riqueza de especies de murciélagos.

Lignans are plant phenols derived from phenylpropanoids. They play a significant role in plant defense and have features that make them appealing for pharmaceutical applications. Lignans can be obtained by plant in vitro cultures; their production by adventitious and hairy roots of Linum species seems to be a promising alternative to chemical synthesis. In the context of large-scale production, it is necessary to optimize their extraction from plants tissue by choosing the more suitable solvent and extraction procedure, paying attention to the use of green media and methods. With the aim to select the best conditions for the extraction of two interesting lignans (justicidin B and 6-methoxypodophyllotoxin) from Linum tissues, different green solvents and the method of ultrasound-assisted extraction were tested. The results showed that ethyl methyl ketone and dimethyl carbonate were the best media to extract justicidin B and 6-methoxypodophyllotoxin, respectively, in terms of purity and recovery. Moreover, we showed that ultrasound-assisted extraction presents different advantages compared to conventional methods. Finally, the optimal experimental conditions to extract justicidin B from L. austriacum hairy roots using methyl ethyl ketone were also determined by the response surface method. The models obtained are reliable and accurate to estimate the purity and recovery of justicidin B.

Understanding the perception, use, and prioritization of ecosystem services (ES) is important for shaping local environmental policies. This study assessed for the Cordillera Region, Philippines, Indigenous peoples (IPs) perception on the significance of ES for their well-being, influence of socio-economic factors attributing to these perceptions, and ranked the most valued ES. Face-to-face interviews were conducted using a semi-structured questionnaires with 922 households in 48 villages of the Region. We found that most frequently identified and valued ES are provisioning (food, income, and medicinal resources) followed by cultural and regulating ES. The study showed signficant influence (p-value 0.001) of ethnicity, occupation, gender, and age to affect local perceptions of ES provided by the landscapes. A remarkable differences appeared in prioritizing ES, e.g. younger local respondents value ES more than older ones; women have appreciated most ES; and ethnic groupings tend to have a different value of ES that are significantly connected with the landscape characteristics. Traditional rice farming systems was ranked as source providing the most valued ES followed by conventional farming systems and off-farming activities like collection of non-timber forest products. Furthermore, IPs involvement to local surveys are useful in ecosystem conservation strategies because the way society modifies an ecosystem is a function associated to perceptions, interest, and values. A relevant information to decision-makers that must be integrated into local development planning to maintain the flow of ES that support the livelihood in a community.

El objetivo de este trabajo es explorar el efecto postural de la estimulación galvánica vestibular (EGV) en camptocormia. Se trata de una serie de siete casos de pacientes con enfermedad de Parkinson y camptocormia que recibieron EGV. La variable resultado fue la flexión frontal del tronco (FFT), evaluada antes, inmediatamente después de la EGV y un mes después, con ojos abiertos y cerrados. También, se valoró la escala de equilibrio de Berg. La FFT después de la EGV presentó una reducción de 2,3 cm inmediatamente después de aplicar el tratamiento (p = 0,091) y de 2,7 cm un minuto después (p = 0,025). De los cinco pacientes que hicieron el seguimiento al mes, en cuatro de ellos se mantuvo el efecto o incluso, mejoró aún más (p = 0,082). No se observaron cambios en la escala de Berg. Nuestros resultados sugieren una mejora aguda en la postura después de una sesión de EGV, que disminuyó significativamente la FFT. La mayoría de los resultados tuvieron una importancia marginal probablemente debido al tamaño de la muestra.(AU)


The objective of this paper is to explore the postural effect of galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) in camptocormia. It is a retrospective case series of 7 Parkinson disease and camptocormia patients. Binaural monopolar GVS was administered. Main outcome variable was trunk forward flexion (TFF), assessed pre and immediately post GVS, and one month after. The TFF was assessed in the standing position, with open and closed eyes. The Berg balance scale was assessed before and 1 month after GVS. The TFF immediately after the GVS showed a reduction of 2.3 cm (p = 0.091) in the first reading, and after a 1-min stance (p = 0.025). Four of 5 patients maintained or even improved this effect a month after (p = 0.082). No changes in Berg balance scale were observed. Our results suggest an acute improvement in posture after one session of GVS, which significantly decreased TFF. Most of the results had a marginal significance due to small sample size.(AU)

The objective of this paper is to explore the postural effect of galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) in camptocormia. It is a retrospective case series of 7 Parkinson disease and camptocormia patients. Binaural monopolar GVS was administered. Main outcome variable was trunk forward flexion (TFF), assessed pre and immediately post GVS, and one month after. The TFF was assessed in the standing position, with open and closed eyes. The Berg balance scale was assessed before and 1 month after GVS. The TFF immediately after the GVS showed a reduction of 2.3 cm (p = 0.091) in the first reading, and after a 1-min stance (p = 0.025). Four of 5 patients maintained or even improved this effect a month after (p = 0.082). No changes in Berg balance scale were observed. Our results suggest an acute improvement in posture after one session of GVS, which significantly decreased TFF. Most of the results had a marginal significance due to small sample size.

Hospital residency is stressful, with a risk of burnout. To assess the prevalence of burnout in medical and surgical residents and identify psycho-organizational and medical risk factors with a view to prevention. A transverse study was conducted in France between September 2018 and November 2018, targeting 633 hospital residents. A self-administered questionnaire was delivered by e-mail. Burnout was assessed on the Maslach Burnout Inventory, anxiety/depression on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) and stress on a visual analogue scale (VAS). Two-hundred and sixteen of the targeted residents (34%) responded. Twenty-three (12%) showed severe burnout in all three dimensions, severe loss of empathy being the most frequent. Almost one-third showed symptoms of anxiety. Residents exposed to psycho-organizational constraints (stress, time pressure, intense work rhythm) and/or with symptoms of anxiety/depression more frequently showed burnout. Prevention of burnout requires reinforced medical monitoring and reduced psycho-organizational constraints.

Lignans are the main secondary metabolites synthetized by Linum species as plant defense molecules. They are also valuable for human health, in particular, for their potent antiviral and antineoplastic properties. In this study, the adventitious root cultures of three Linum species (L. flavum, L. mucronatum and L. dolomiticum) were developed to produce aryltetralin lignans. The effect of two elicitors, methyl jasmonate and coronatine, on aryltetralin lignans production was also evaluated. The adventitious root cultures from L. dolomiticum were obtained and analyzed for the first time and resulted as the best producer for all the aryltetralins highlighted in this system: Podophyllotoxin, 6-methoxypodophyllotoxin and 6-methoxypodophyllotoxin-7-O-ß-glucoside, the last showing a productivity of 92.6 mg/g DW. The two elicitors differently affected the production of the 6-methoxypodophyllotoxin and 6-methoxypodophyllotoxin-7-O-ß-glucoside.

1. The bioavailability of a trace mineral source is related to its intestinal solubility (bioaccessibility), which in turn is determined by its physicochemical properties. It is still not clear which characteristics are more relevant in affecting solubility and bioavailability of mineral sources. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a common feed additive used to supplement zinc in the diet of monogastric animals. However, different sources have shown variable responses on animal bioavailability.2. This study hypothesised that different sources of feed grade ZnO have various physicochemical features that lead to distinct bioavailability values. Feed grade ZnO samples collected from the feed industry worldwide were characterised for their physicochemical features and tested in broilers to allow bioavailability determined.3. A total of 135 male Cobb broiler chickens were fed a standard starter diet from day 1 after hatching up to d 7. At d 8, animals were allocated in individual cages and fed one of the following dietary treatments during 15 days: a basal diet with 23.5 ppm of zinc and seven test diets with supplemented ZnO or zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) at 6 or 12 ppm.4. Different sources of ZnO showed an effect of solubility in the stomach and supplementation influenced total Zn levels in the ileum. The bioavailability of the different sources varied from 49% to 160% in relation to ZnSO4. Aggregate size of particles seems to explain most of the variability in the bioavailability of the different sources tested in broilers. In conclusion, physicochemical properties of ZnO can partly explain the variability observed in terms of biological value.

Lignans are the main secondary metabolites synthetized by Linum species as plant defense compounds but they are also valuable for human health, in particular, for novel therapeutics. In this work, Linum austriacum in vitro cultures, cells (Cc), adventitious roots (ARc) and hairy roots (HRc) were developed for the production of justicidin B through elicitation with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and coronatine (COR). The performances of the cultures were evaluated for their stability, total phenols content and antioxidant ability. NMR was used to identify justicidin B and isojusticidin B and HPLC to quantify the production, highlighting ARc and HRc as the highest productive tissues. MeJA and COR treatments induced the synthesis of justicidin B more than three times and the synthesis of other compounds. RNA-sequencing and a de novo assembly of L. austriacum ARc transcriptome was generated to identify the genes activated by MeJA. Furthermore, for the first time, the intracellular localization of justicidin B in ARc was investigated through microscopic analysis. Then, HRc was chosen for small-scale production in a bioreactor. Altogether, our results improve knowledge on justicidin B pathway and cellular localization in L. austriacum for future scale-up processes.

Bats are unique among mammals in that they have evolved the capacity to fly. This has generated strong selective pressure on the morphology and function of their digestive system. Given that in bats intestinal length and nominal surface-area are proportional to body mass, this trait importantly relates to explaining some of their digestive characteristics. We described the relationship between digestive traits and body mass of four species of bats of the family Vespertilionidae living in a montane ecosystem in central Mexico. We calculated food transit time, apparent dry matter digestibility, and defecation rate in feeding trials under captive conditions. We also: (1) built a model of the relationship between digestive traits and body mass to determine if this association was consistent within the members of the family Vespertilionidae, and (2) mapped these traits along the phylogeny to explore how digestive characteristics may have evolved. In our feeding trials, body mass was positively related to transit time and negatively related to apparent dry matter digestibility. The model predicted accurately the transit time in bats with body mass < 20 g. The phylogenetic approach suggested that over the evolutionary history of the family, transit time decreased as digestibility increased. Because of the results obtained here, it is likely that for most bats of the family Vespertilionidae, adaptations in digestive traits to process food have followed evolutionary changes in their body mass. We discuss these findings in a physiological and ecological context.
