RESUMO

Transition-metal chalcogenides with intercalated layered structures are interesting systems in material physics due to their attractive electronic and magnetic properties, with applications in the fields of magnetic refrigerators, catalysts, and thermoelectrics, among others. In this work, we studied in detail the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of (Fe,Ti)-based sulfides with formula FexTi2S4 (x = 0.24, 0.32, and 0.42), prepared as polycrystalline materials under high-pressure conditions. They present a layered Heideite-type crystal structure, as assessed by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. A local structure analysis using Fe K-edge extended X-ray-absorption fine structure (EXAFS) data unveiled a conspicuous contraction of the main Fe-S bond in Fe0.24Ti2S4 at the vicinity of the magnetic transition 60-80 K. We suggest that this anomaly is related to magnetoelastic coupling effects. The EXAFS analysis allowed extraction of the Einstein temperatures (θE), i.e., the phonon contribution to the specific heat, for the two bond pairs Fe-S(1) [θE ≈318 K; 290 K (C/T)] and Fe-Ti(1) [θE ≈218 K; 190 K (C/T)]. In addition to the structural and local vibrational measurements, we probed the magnetic properties using magneto-calorimetry, magnetometry under applied pressure, magnetoresistance (MR), and Hall effect measurements. We observed the appearance of a broad peak in the specific heat around 120 K in the x = 0.42 compound that we associated with an antiferromagnetic ordering electronic transition. We found that the antiferromagnetic transition temperature is pressure and composition sensitive and reduces at 1.2 GPa by ∼12 and ∼3 K, for the members with x = 0.24 and x = 0.42, respectively. Similarly, the saturation magnetization in the ordered phase depends on both pressure and iron content, reducing its value by 50, 90, and 30% for x = 0.24, 0.32, and 0.42, respectively. We observed clear jumps in the magnetic hysteresis loops, MR, and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) below 2 K at fields around 2-4 T. We associated this observation with the metamagnetic transitions; from the Berry-curvature a decoupling parameter of SH = 0.12 V-1 is determined. Comparison of the results on the temperature-dependent magnetization, MR, and AHE elucidates a strong inelastic scattering contribution to the AHE at higher temperatures due to the cluster spin-glass phase.

RESUMO

An advanced experimental and theoretical model to explain the correlation between the electronic and local structure of Eu[Formula: see text] in two different environments within a same compound, EuS, is presented. EuX monochalcogenides (X: O, S, Se, Te) exhibit anomalies in all their properties around 14 GPa with a semiconductor to metal transition. Although it is known that these changes are related to the [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] electronic transition, no consistent model of the pressure-induced modifications of the electronic structure currently exists. We show, by optical and x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and by ab initio calculations up to 35 GPa, that the pressure evolution of the crystal field plays a major role in triggering the observed electronic transitions from semiconductor to the half-metal and finally to the metallic state.

RESUMO

Earth's deep carbon cycle affects atmospheric CO2, climate, and habitability. Owing to the extreme solubility of CaCO3, aqueous fluids released from the subducting slab could extract all carbon from the slab. However, recycling efficiency is estimated at only around 40%. Data from carbonate inclusions, petrology, and Mg isotope systematics indicate Ca2+ in carbonates is replaced by Mg2+ and other cations during subduction. Here we determined the solubility of dolomite [CaMg(CO3)2] and rhodochrosite (MnCO3), and put an upper limit on that of magnesite (MgCO3) under subduction zone conditions. Solubility decreases at least two orders of magnitude as carbonates become Mg-rich. This decreased solubility, coupled with heterogeneity of carbon and water subduction, may explain discrepancies in carbon recycling estimates. Over a range of slab settings, we find aqueous dissolution responsible for mobilizing 10 to 92% of slab carbon. Globally, aqueous fluids mobilise [Formula: see text]% ([Formula: see text] Mt/yr) of subducted carbon from subducting slabs.

RESUMO

The compression of argon is measured between 10 K and 296 K up to 20 GPa and and up to 114 GPa at 296 K in diamond anvil cells. Three samples conditioning are used: (1) single crystal sample directly compressed between the anvils, (2) powder sample directly compressed between the anvils, (3) single crystal sample compressed in a pressure medium. A partial transformation of the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase to a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure is observed above 4.2-13 GPa. Hcp phase forms through stacking faults in fcc-Ar and its amount depends on pressurizing conditions and starting fcc-Ar microstructure. The quasi-hydrostatic equation of state of the fcc phase is well described by a quasi-harmonic Mie-Grüneisen-Debye formalism, with the following 0 K parameters for Rydberg-Vinet equation: [Formula: see text] = 38.0 Å[Formula: see text]/at, [Formula: see text] = 2.65 GPa, [Formula: see text] = 7.423. Under the current experimental conditions, non-hydrostaticity affects measured P-V points mostly at moderate pressure ([Formula: see text] 20 GPa).

RESUMO

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a widely used technique to probe the local environment around specific atomic species. Applied to samples under extreme pressure and temperature conditions, XAS is sensitive to phase transitions, including melting, and allows gathering insights on compositional variations and electronic changes occurring during such transitions. These characteristics can be exploited for studies of prime interest in geophysics and fundamental high-pressure physics. Here, we investigated the melting curve and the eutectic composition of four geophysically relevant iron binary systems: Fe-C, Fe-O, Fe-S and Fe-Si. Our results show that all these systems present the same spectroscopic signatures upon melting, common to those observed for other pure late 3d transition metals. The presented melting criterion seems to be general for late 3d metals bearing systems. Additionally, we demonstrate the suitability of XAS to extract melt compositional information in situ, such as the evolution of the concentration of light elements with increasing temperature. Diagnostics presented in this work can be applied to studies over an even larger pressure range exploiting the upgraded synchrotron machines, and directly transferred to time-resolved extreme condition studies using dynamic compression (ns) or fast laser heating (ms).

RESUMO

Mixtures of argon and neon have been experimentally studied under high pressure. One stoichiometric compound, with ArNe2 composition, is observed in this system. It is a Laves phase with a hexagonal MgZn2 structure, stable up to at least 65 GPa, the highest pressure reached in the experiments. Its equation of state follows closely the one of an ideal Ar+2Ne mixture. The binary phase diagram of the Ar-Ne system resembles the diagram predicted for hard sphere mixtures with a similar atomic radius ratio, suggesting that no electronic interactions appear in this system in this pressure range. ArNe2 can be a convenient quasihydrostatic pressure transmitting medium under moderate pressure.
