RESUMO

When analyzing thousands of event histories, analysts often want to see the events as an aggregate to detect insights and generate new hypotheses about the data. An analysis tool must emphasize both the prevalence and the temporal ordering of these events. Additionally, the analysis tool must also support flexible comparisons to allow analysts to gather visual evidence. In a previous work, we introduced align, rank, and filter (ARF) to accentuate temporal ordering. In this paper, we present temporal summaries, an interactive visualization technique that highlights the prevalence of event occurrences. Temporal summaries dynamically aggregate events in multiple granularities (year, month, week, day, hour, etc.) for the purpose of spotting trends over time and comparing several groups of records. They provide affordances for analysts to perform temporal range filters. We demonstrate the applicability of this approach in two extensive case studies with analysts who applied temporal summaries to search, filter, and look for patterns in electronic health records and academic records.

RESUMO

A technetium-99m pertechnetate Meckel scan is the standard diagnostic test to diagnose Meckel diverticulum. Although a negative scan does not exclude Meckel diverticulum, it should be kept in mind that the diagnosis can be missed on the basis of a single negative scan. Another important point is the typical position of this anatomical abnormality in the scan. We report a peculiar anatomical variation of Meckel diverticulum as seen in the technetium-99m pertechnetate scan. Recognizing this variant of Meckel diverticulum is important to avoid missing such a potentially life-threatening congenital anomaly.

RESUMO

As electronic health records (EHR) become more widespread, they enable clinicians and researchers to pose complex queries that can benefit immediate patient care and deepen understanding of medical treatment and outcomes. However, current query tools make complex temporal queries difficult to pose, and physicians have to rely on computer professionals to specify the queries for them. This paper describes our efforts to develop a novel query tool implemented in a large operational system at the Washington Hospital Center (Microsoft Amalga, formerly known as Azyxxi). We describe our design of the interface to specify temporal patterns and the visual presentation of results, and report on a pilot user study looking for adverse reactions following radiology studies using contrast.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The introduction of 48-hour wireless pH testing offers clinicians a new alternative for the objective documentation of reflux. The success of transnasal wireless pH capsule placement has not been previously described. The purpose of this investigation was to describe our experience with transnasal wireless pH capsule placement. METHODOLOGY: All patients undergoing unsedated transnasal esophagoscopy and wireless pH capsule placement between January 1, 2003 and July 31, 2003 were prospectively evaluated. Data concerning patient tolerance, success of capsule placement and function, complications, and pH recordings were collected. RESULTS: During this time, 46 persons were evaluated. The mean age of the cohort was 52 years. Of the patients, 50% were male. The indications for the procedure were chronic cough (18/46), gastroesophageal reflux disease (18/46), and larygopharyngeal reflux (10). Of the procedures performed, 85% (39/46) were successful. Complications included epistaxis (2/46), laryngospasm (2/46), and vasovagal reaction (1/46). CONCLUSIONS: The transnasal placement of a wireless pH capsule is a safe and effective diagnostic adjunct to unsedated transnasal esophagoscopy.
