RESUMO

In the field of memory, it is now admitted that an experience of memory is not only the consequence of the activation of a precise content, but also results from an inference associated with the transfer of the manner in which the process was carried out (i.e., fluency) in addition to the transfer of the process itself. The aim of this work was to show that experience of memory is also associated with the fluency that is due to the transfer of a processing carried out in our past interactions with our environment, independently the fluency associated with the stimulus in progress. First, participants performed a perceptual discrimination task (geometric shapes: circle or square) that involves a fluent or a non-fluent gesture to respond. Motor fluency vs. non-fluency was implicitly associated with the colour of the geometric shapes. Second, participants had to perform a classical memory recognition task. During the recognition phase, items appeared either with the colour associated with motor fluency or with the colour associated with motor non-fluency. We used a Go-NoGo task to avoid having a confused factor (response space). Results show that items were better recognised with a colour associated with motor fluency than with a colour associated with non-motor fluency. These findings support the idea that an experience of memory is also associated with the transfer of the motor feeling of fluency linked to our past interactions with the environment.

RESUMO

AIM: This study compared the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) for 16 weeks on whole-body and abdominal fat mass (FM) in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS: Seventeen women (69±1 years; BMI: 31±1kg.m-2) were randomly assigned to either a HIIT [60×(8s at 77-85% HRmax, 12s of active recovery)] or MICT (40min at 55-60% of their individual HRR) cycling program for 16 weeks, 2 days/week. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure whole-body and regional FM content, including abdominal adiposity and visceral adipose tissue. Plasma cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, glucose and HbA1c levels were measured. Levels of nutritional intake and physical activity were evaluated by 7-day self-reports. RESULTS: Dietary energy (caloric) intake, physical activity level and total body mass did not vary in either group from the beginning to the end of the training intervention. Overall, total FM decreased and total fat-free mass significantly increased over time (by around 2-3%). Total FM reduction at the end of the intervention was not significantly different between groups. However, significant loss of total abdominal (-8.3±2.2%) and visceral (-24.2±7.7%) FM was observed only with HIIT. Time effects were noted for HbA1c and total cholesterol/HDL ratio. CONCLUSION: With no concomitant caloric restriction, an HIIT program in postmenopausal women with T2D (twice a week for 16 weeks) appeared to be more effective for reducing central obesity than MICT, and could be proposed as an alternative exercise training program for this population.

RESUMO

We demonstrate that a C(60) overlayer enhances the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of a Co thin film, inducing an inverse spin reorientation transition from in plane to out of plane. The driving force is the (60)/Co interfacial magnetic anisotropy that we have measured quantitatively in situ as a function of the (60) coverage. Comparison with state-of-the-art ab initio calculations show that this interfacial anisotropy mainly arises from the local hybridization between (60) p(z) and Co d(z(2)) orbitals. By generalizing these arguments, we also demonstrate that the hybridization of (60) with a Fe(110) surface decreases the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. These results open the way to tailor the interfacial magnetic anisotropy in organic-material-ferromagnet systems.

RESUMO

Patients with developmental amnesia usually suffer from both episodic and spatial memory deficits. DM, a developmental amnesic, was impaired in her ability to process self-motion (i.e., idiothetic) information while her ability to process external stable landmarks (i.e., allothetic) was preserved when no self-motion processing was required. On a naturalistic and incidental episodic task, DM was severely and predictably impaired on both free and cued recall tasks. Interestingly, when cued, she was more impaired at recalling spatial context than factual or temporal information. Theoretical implications of that co-occurrence of deficits and those dissociations are discussed and testable cerebral hypothesis are proposed.

RESUMO

Improving the traits that underlie meat quality is a major challenge in the beef industry. The objective of this paper was to detect QTL linked to sensory meat quality traits in 3 French beef cattle breeds. We genotyped 1,059, 1,219, and 947 young bulls and their sires belonging to the Charolais, Limousin, and Blonde d'Aquitaine breeds, respectively, using the Illumina BovineSNP50 BeadChip (Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA). After estimating relevant genetic parameters using VCE software, we performed a linkage disequilibrium and linkage analysis on 4 meat traits: intramuscular fat content, muscle lightness, shear force, and tenderness score. Heritability coefficients largely ranged between 0.10 and 0.24; however, they reached a maximum of 0.44 and 0.50 for intramuscular fat content and tenderness score, respectively, in the Charolais breed. The 2 meat texture traits, shear force and tenderness score, were strongly genetically correlated (-0.91 in the Charolais and Limousin breed and -0.86 in the Blonde d'Aquitaine breed), indicating that they are 2 different measures of approximately the same trait. The genetic correlation between tenderness and intramuscular fat content differed across breeds. Using a significance threshold of 5 × 10(-4) for QTL detection, we found more than 200 significant positions across the 29 autosomal chromosomes for the 4 traits in the Charolais and Blonde d'Aquitaine breeds; in contrast, there were only 78 significant positions in the Limousin breed. Few QTL were common across breeds. We detected QTL for intramuscular fat content located near the myostatin gene in the Charolais and Blonde d'Aquitaine breeds. No mutation in this gene has been reported for the Blonde d'Aquitaine breed; therefore, it suggests that an unknown mutation could be segregating in this breed. We confirmed that, in certain breeds, markers in the calpastatin and calpain 1 gene regions affect tenderness. We also found new QTL as several QTL on chromosome 3 that are significantly associated with meat tenderness in the Blonde d'Aquitaine breed. Overall, these results greatly contribute to the goal of building a panel of markers that can be used to select animals of high meat quality.

RESUMO

We demonstrate the capability to build zero and one-dimensional electroactive molecular nanostructures ordered over a macroscopic scale and stable under ambient conditions. To realize these arrays, we use the selective grafting of functionalized thiols (juglon and terthiophene based) on a self-organized metallic template. The nanoscale patterning of the molecular conductance is demonstrated and analyzed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Finally, the influence of the nanostructuring on electro-chemical properties is measured, paving the way to an all-bottom-up fabrication of nanostructured templates for nanosciences.

RESUMO

The spatial distribution of photon modes confined in a 0D cavity and a 1D W1 waveguide is investigated on AlN-based photonic crystal (PC) membranes by spectrally resolved scanning confocal microscopy in the ultra-violet spectral range. The influence of the fabrication-induced disorder of the PC on the photon modes is analyzed. The cavity modes are shown to be robust with respect to disorder, whereas the 1D modes of the W1 waveguide are localized near its cut-off frequency. Those modifications of the lowest energy photonic modes are compared to simulations of weakly disordered photonic structures.

RESUMO

We report on the elaboration of networks of SAM domains. More precisely, we show the feasibility in making arrays of functionalized alkylthiol nanodomains bordered with an alkylthiol matrix. The several step process relies on the replication of a self-organized cobalt array grown on Au(111). The SAM process takes place in solution. The chemical affinity of thiol for gold leads to the selective grafting of molecules on the surface. After having removed the inorganic array, alkylthiol functionalized with a terthiophene unit is grafted in free gold areas. The efficiency of the replication of the initial template depends on the stability of the first SAM. We also investigate electronic tunnel transport through oligothiophene islands with the STM. The variation of the molecular contrast with bias voltage between the two molecular species indicates a potential resonant tunneling mechanism through the orbitals of the aromatic compound.

RESUMO

Using organic materials in spintronic devices raises a lot of expectation for future applications due to their flexibility, low cost, long spin lifetime, and easy functionalization. However, the interfacial hybridization and spin polarization between the organic layer and the ferromagnetic electrodes still has to be understood at the molecular scale. Coupling state-of-the-art spin-polarized scanning tunneling spectroscopy and spin-resolved ab initio calculations, we give the first experimental evidence of the spin splitting of a molecular orbital on a single non magnetic C(60) molecule in contact with a magnetic material, namely, the Cr(001) surface. This hybridized molecular state is responsible for an inversion of sign of the tunneling magnetoresistance depending on energy. This result opens the way to spin filtering through molecular orbitals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: : To determine if rapid growth between 0 and 2 years of life influences body composition and resting energy expenditure (REE) measured at 12-14 years in a population of obese children. METHODS: REE and body composition were measured in 107 obese children aged 12-14 years in whom weight at birth and 2 years was recorded. RESULTS: 46 obese children had a rapid growth between birth and 2 years (>0.67 SD). Rapid weight gain was positively correlated with weight and height at 12-14 years but not with body mass index (BMI). Fat mass (FM) to fat free mass (FFM) ratio was not significantly different at 12-14 years in children with rapid or normal growth velocity. REE in 12-14 year-old children with rapid growth (1765±222kcal/24h) was significantly higher than children with normal growth velocity (1586±216kcal/24h) (P<0.001). REE adjusted for FFM was similar in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Rapid weight gain between 0 and 2 years of life is associated with higher weight, height, FFM, FM and REE in 12-14 year-old obese children despite identical BMI. These data demonstrate that growth velocity affects later body composition and REE in obese adolescents but relationship between REE and FFM is preserved.

RESUMO

Mediotemporal lobe structures are involved in both spatial processing and long-term memory. Patient M.R. suffers from amnesia, due to bilateral hippocampal lesion and temporoparietal atrophy following carbon monoxide poisoning. We compared his performance in immediate spatial memory tasks with the performance of ten healthy matched participants. Using an immediate reproduction of path, we observed a dissociation between his performance in three allocentric tasks and in five egocentric-updating tasks. His performance was always impaired on tasks requiring the use of an egocentric-updating representation but remained preserved on allocentric tasks. These results fit with the hypothesis that the hippocampus plays a role in spatial memory, but they also suggest that allocentric deficits previously observed in amnesia might actually reflect deficits in egocentric-updating processes. Furthermore, the co-occurrence of deficits in episodic long-term memory and short-term egocentric-updating representation without any short-term allocentric deficit suggests a new link between the mnemonic and navigational roles of the hippocampus. The Cognitive Map theory, the Multiple Trace theory, as well as further models linking spatial and nonspatial functions of the hippocampus are discussed.

RESUMO

Several tens of chromium layers were deposited at 250 °C on a Cr(001) surface and investigated by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Chromium is found to grow with a mound-like morphology resulting from the stacking of several monolayers which do not uniformly cover the whole surface of the substrate. The terminal plane consists of an irregular array of Cr islands with lateral sizes smaller than 20 × 20 nm(2). Combined AES and STS measurements reveal the presence of a significant amount of segregants prior to and after deposition. A detailed investigation of the surface shows that it consists of two types of patches. Thanks to STS measurements, the two types of area have been identified as being either chromium pure or segregant rich. SP-STM experiments have evidenced that the antiferromagnetic layer coupling remains in the chromium mounds after deposition and is not significantly affected by the presence of the segregants.

RESUMO

The objectives of the study were to evaluate allelic frequencies and to test the association of polymorphisms in the calpastatin (CAST) and µ-calpain (CAPN1) genes with meat tenderness in 3 French beef breeds. A total of 1,114 Charolais, 1,254 Limousin, and 981 Blonde d'Aquitaine purebred young bulls were genotyped for 3 SNP in the CAST gene and 4 SNP in the CAPN1 gene. Two of these markers, 1 in each gene, can be found in Australian or American commercial genetic tests. Others have previously been reported in American studies or are newly evidenced SNP. The quantitative traits studied were Warner-Bratzler shear force and a tenderness score evaluated by trained sensory panels. All the SNP were informative in the 3 breeds. Associations of individual markers or haplotypes with traits were analyzed. The results differed in the 3 breeds. The G allele of a CAST marker (position 97574679 on Btau4.0) was found to exert a significant effect on the shear force (+0.18 phenotypic SD; RSD) and tenderness score (-0.22 RSD) in the Blonde d'Aquitaine breed. In the same breed, this marker was associated with another CAST SNP (position 97576054 on Btau4.0) such that the GA haplotype appeared to be associated with tougher meat. Two CAPN1 markers (positions 45221250 and 45241089 on Btau4.0) had a significant effect on both traits in the Charolais breed (from |0.11| to |0.25| RSD). In the same breed, these markers were associated with another CAPN1 SNP (position 45219395 on Btau4.0) such that the ACA and AGG haplotypes appeared to be associated with a tender meat and a tougher meat, respectively. Consequently, the present results indicate that the effects of the markers studied are breed-specific and cannot be extended to all Bos taurus breeds. Further studies are also required to identify other more appropriate markers for French beef breeds.

RESUMO

Using scanning tunneling microscopy and a diffraction experiment, we have discovered a new ordered surface alloy made out of two bulk-immiscible components, Fe and Au, deposited on a Ru(0001) substrate. In such a system, substrate-mediated strain interactions are believed to provide the main driving force for mixing. However, spin-polarized ab initio calculations show that the most stable structures are always the ones with the highest magnetic moment per Fe atom and not the ones minimizing the surface stress, in remarkable agreement with the observations. This opens up novel possibilities for creating materials with unique properties of relevance to device applications.

RESUMO

The magnetic susceptibility of self-organized two-dimensional Co nanodots on Au(111) has been measured as a function of their size in the 2-7 nm diameter range. We show that the activation energy for the thermal reversal displays a power law behavior with the dot volume. Atomic scale simulations based on the Heisenberg Hamiltonian show that this behavior is due to a deviation from the macrospin model for dot size as small as 3 nm in diameter. This discrepancy is attributed to finite temperature effects through the thermal excitation of spin-wave modes inside the particles.

RESUMO

Single-walled carbon nanotubes provide an ideal system for studying the properties of one-dimensional (1D) materials, where strong electron-electron interactions are expected. Optical measurements have recently reported the existence of excitons in semiconducting nanotubes, revealing the importance of many-body effects. Surprisingly, pioneering electronic structure calculations and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) experiments report the same gap values as optical experiments. Here, an experimental STS study of the bandgap of single-walled semiconducting nanotubes, demonstrates a continuous transition from the gap reduced by the screening resulting from the metal substrate to the intrinsic gap dominated by many-body interactions. These results provide a deeper knowledge of many-body interactions in these 1D systems and a better understanding of their electronic properties, which is a prerequisite for any application of nanotubes in the ultimate device miniaturization for molecular electronics, or spintronics.

RESUMO

The availability of genetic tests to detect different mutations in the myostatin gene allows the identification of heterozygous animals and would warrant the superiority of these animals for slaughter performance if this superiority is confirmed. Thus, 2 mutations of this gene, Q204X and nt821, were studied in 3 French beef breeds in the program Qualvigène. This work was done with 1,114 Charolais, 1,254 Limousin, and 981 Blonde d'Aquitaine young bulls from, respectively, 48, 36, and 30 sires and slaughtered from 2004 to 2006. In addition to the usual carcass traits recorded at slaughter (e.g., carcass yield, muscle score), carcass composition was estimated by weighing internal fat and dissecting the 6th rib. The muscle characteristic traits analyzed were lipid and collagen contents, muscle fiber section area, and pH. Regarding meat quality, sensory qualities of meat samples were evaluated by a taste panel, and Warner-Bratzler shear force was measured. Deoxyribonucleic acid was extracted from the blood samples of all calves, the blood samples of 78% of the dams, and the blood or semen samples of all the sires. Genotypes were determined for 2 disruptive mutations, Q204X and nt821. Analyses were conducted by breed. The superiority of carcass traits of calves carrying one copy of the mutated allele (Q204X or nt821) over noncarrier animals was approximately +1 SD in the Charolais and Limousin breeds but was not significant in the Blonde d'Aquitaine. In the Charolais breed, for which the frequency was the greatest (7%), young bulls carrying the Q204X mutation presented a carcass with less fat, less intramuscular fat and collagen contents, and a clearer and more tender meat than those of homozygous-normal cattle. The meat of these animals also had slightly less flavor. Also in the Charolais breed, 13 of 48 sires were heterozygous. For each sire, the substitution effect of the wild allele by the mutant allele was approximately +1 SD for carcass conformation and yield, showing that the estimate of the substitution effect was independent of family structure, as it ought to be for a causal mutation. These results illustrate the challenge of using genetic tests to detect animals with the genetic potential for greater grades of carcasses and meat quality.

RESUMO

Self-organized Co nanodots on a Au(111) surface have been surrounded by controlled Au rings that progressively cap the entire dots. The magnetic susceptibility of these dots has been measured in situ as a function of the Au coverage. The blocking temperature increases when the Co bilayer dots are surrounded by the first Au atomic layer and decreases with the subsequent capping. This result cannot be explained by interfacial anisotropy which is generally assumed to be the dominant term in the magnetic anisotropy of nanostructures. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we evidence that the large strain inside the Co clusters is the main driving force for the anisotropy changes during the Au encapsulation.
