In situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies on maleic acid under high pressure conditions.

Maleic acid was studied by Raman spectroscopy and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) under high pressure conditions by using a diamond anvil cell. The Raman spectroscopy measurements were performed from ambient pressure up to 9.2 GPa in the 100-3200 cm-1 spectral range. While the XRD measurements were performed up to 10.1 GPa. Here we present the pressure-dependence behavior from both the Raman modes and cell parameters. Maleic acid lattice parameters decrease anisotropically as a function of pressure and a reduction of 27% in the volume of the unit cell was observed. Modifications in the material's compressibility were observed at around 2 and 6 GPa.

Scientific response to the 2021 eruption of Nyiragongo based on the implementation of a participatory monitoring system.

The development of a resilient society is a major challenge for growing human population faced with abundant natural hazards. During and after the May 22, 2021 eruption of Nyiragongo, the local population was surprised and scared by the subsequent seismicity and associated surface fracturing, coupled with the alert of a possible new eruptive vent opening in Goma (Democratic Republic of Congo) and/or Gisenyi (Rwanda). The creation of a toll-free phone number enabled the population to record fractures and gas/thermal anomalies affecting the area. Such work was fundamental in enabling scientists and authorities to assess the associated risks. Crucially, gas data showed that the degassing through fractures did not represent direct transfer of magmatic volatiles but was more likely of superficial origin. Surprisingly, this participatory work revealed that the first fractures appeared several weeks before the eruption and their opening was not detected by the monitoring system. This firmly underlines the need for scientists to anchor citizen science in monitoring strategies.

Anterior pre-tensioned external fixator for pelvic fractures and dislocations. Initial clinical series.

In the treatment of unstable pelvic ring fractures, external fixators have the limitation of not adequately stabilizing the injured posterior elements. This article presents a novel and simple technique of temporary external fixation of the pelvic ring, able to produce compression of both the anterior and posterior pelvic elements. A curved flexible carbon-fiber rod is used, pre-tensioned before attachment to supra-acetabular Schanz screws. Although more extensive clinical experience is required, favorable preliminary results in a series of 13 patients with unstable pelvic fracture were encouraging: the aim of closing the posterior and anterior elements of the pelvic ring was achieved in all cases treated with this technique, and 12 patients survived. Radiological results were excellent in 3 cases and good in 9 cases. No major complications, such as secondary displacement, vertical re-displacement or deep infection, were observed. Mean operative time was 25min, compatible with emergency management.

Physiological disposition of CGS 16617 in rat, dog, and man.

The disposition and metabolism of CGS 16617 (3-[(5-amino-1-carboxy-1S-pentyl)amino],2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-2-oxo-3S-1H-1 - benzazepine-1-acetic acid), and angiotensin l-converting enzyme inhibitor, were investigated in rats, dogs, and man. In rats, a single oral dose of 10 mg/kg 14C-CGS 16617 afforded peak plasma concentrations of drug between 0.5 and 6 hr of dosing. The AUC was on average 9.6% of that after iv administration of the same dose, indicating low oral absorption of the drug. The apparent volumes of distribution, V1 and Vdss, were 0.45 and 2.5 liters/kg, respectively. Disappearance of the drug from plasma after the iv dose was biphasic, with mean half-lives of 0.5 and 13 hr, respectively, for the lambda 1 and lambda 2 phases. After single iv doses (10 mg/kg) to dogs and rats, 14CGS 16617 was almost exclusively eliminated by the renal route, with urinary recoveries of greater than 90% of dose. The same dose administered orally gave urinary recoveries of less than 10% of the dose in rats and about 15% in the dog. The remainder of the dose was eliminated in the feces. Bile duct-cannulated rats excreted less than 3% of an oral 10 mg/kg dose in the bile, in 24 hr. In man (N = 4), a single oral dose of 100 mg 14C-CGS 16617 resulted in peak plasma concentrations of 0.02-0.07 microgram of drug eq/ml between 4 and 6 hr of dosing. Mutagenic activity of nitrite-treated foods: human stomach cancer may be related to dietary factors.

By the Salmonella typhimurium test, extracts of Japanese raw fish treated in the laboratory with nitrite showed mutagenic activity which is prevented by addition of ascorbate. Extracts from similarly treated beef and hot dogs were nonmutagenic. The data conform to a working concept that the high stomach cancer incidence in Japanese and certain other populations may be due to specific dietary factors of an alkylnitrosamide type.
