RESUMO

Peroxyl radicals (RO2) are important intermediates in the atmospheric oxidation processes. The RO2 can react with other RO2 to form reactive intermediates known as tetroxides, RO4R. The reaction mechanisms of RO4R formation and its various decomposition channels have been investigated in multiple computational studies, but previous approaches have not been able to provide a unified methodology that is able to connect all relevant reactions together. An apparent difficulty in modeling the RO4R formation and its decomposition is the involvement of open-shell singlet electronic states along the reaction pathway. Modeling such electronic states requires multireference (MR) methods, which we use in the present study to investigate in detail a model reaction of MeO2 + MeO2 → MeO4Me, and its decomposition, MeO4Me → MeO + O2 + MeO, as well as the two-body product complexes MeO···O2 + MeO and MeO···MeO + O2. The used MR methods are benchmarked against relative energies of MeO2 + MeO2, MeO4Me, and MeO + MeO + O2, calculated with CCSD(T)/CBS, W2X, and W3X-L methods. We found that the calculated relative energies of the overall MeO2 + MeO2 → MeO4Me → MeO + O2 + MeO reaction are very sensitive to the chosen MR method and that the CASPT2(22e,14o)-IPEA method is able to reproduce the relative energies obtained by the various coupled-cluster methods. Furthermore, CASPT2(22e,14o)-IPEA and W3X-L results show that the MeO···O2 product complex + MeO is lower in energy than the MeO···MeO complex + O2. The formation of MeO4Me is exothermic, and its decomposition is endothermic, relative to the tetroxide. Both the formation and decomposition reactions appear to follow pathways with no saddle points. According to potential energy surface scans of the decomposition pathway, the concerted cleavage of both MeO···O bonds in MeO4Me is energetically preferred over the corresponding sequential decomposition.

RESUMO

The water nitric oxide complex has been studied computationally. We consider the four lowest energy structures of the H(2)O-NO complex: two from both symmetries (2)A' and (2)A''. We use the coupled cluster method with correlation consistent basis sets in all ab initio calculations. Vibrational transitions have been calculated using a model that describes the complex as two individually vibrating monomer units: H(2)O and NO. We use the variational method to solve the vibrational problem. The OH-stretching energy levels and transition intensities are calculated up to the second and NO-stretching to the third overtone region. We also study NO-stretching vibronic transitions (A(2)Sigma(+) <-- X(2)Pi). We use an isolated local mode approach to calculate energies and oscillator strengths of the vibronic transitions. The results for the complex are compared to the corresponding monomer ones.

RESUMO

High-yield synthesis of gold(I) thionato complexes, bis(pyridine-2-thionato)gold(I) chloride (1) and bis(pyridine-4-thionato)gold(I) chloride (2), are described. According to their solid-state structures, a linear coordination of Au(I), equiplanar coordination of the ligands and two weak gamma-agostic interactions are found in both of these complexes despite of different relative positions of N and S atoms in the pyridinethionato ligands. Density functional theory calculations on 1 and 2 reproduce the observed X-ray structures. Even though the C-H...Au interactions of Au(I) and two pyridine moieties (2.83 and 2.88 A in 1 and 2.86 A in 2) are relatively weak, according to calculations they seem to provide further stabilization for the coordination and orientation of the ligands. In 1 the shortest Au...Au distances of 3.50 A indicate that aurophilic interactions, even though weak, are present in the solid state, whereas in 2 these interactions are absent.

RESUMO

The bonding strength of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands to a neutral AuCl test moiety are compared to that of several phosphanes and other ligands. Of the ligands studied, the NHCs clearly form the strongest bonds to AuCl. A simplified triangular CN2 model is also introduced for the NHCs.

RESUMO

Quantum chemical calculations of the nuclear shielding tensor, the nuclear quadrupole coupling tensor, and the spin-rotation tensor are reported for the Xe dimer using ab initio quantum chemical methods. The binary chemical shift delta, the anisotropy of the shielding tensor Delta sigma, the nuclear quadrupole coupling tensor component along the internuclear axis chi( parallel ), and the spin-rotation constant C( perpendicular ) are presented as a function of internuclear distance. The basis set superposition error is approximately corrected for by using the counterpoise correction (CP) method. Electron correlation effects are systematically studied via the Hartree-Fock, complete active space self-consistent field, second-order Møller-Plesset many-body perturbation, and coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) theories, the last one without and with noniterative triples, at the nonrelativistic all-electron level. We also report a high-quality theoretical interatomic potential for the Xe dimer, gained using the relativistic effective potential/core polarization potential scheme. These calculations used valence basis set of cc-pVQZ quality supplemented with a set of midbond functions. The second virial coefficient of Xe nuclear shielding, which is probably the experimentally best-characterized intermolecular interaction effect in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, is computed as a function of temperature, and compared to experiment and earlier theoretical results. The best results for the second virial coefficient, obtained using the CCSD(CP) binary chemical shift curve and either our best theoretical potential or the empirical potentials from the literature, are in good agreement with experiment. Zero-point vibrational corrections of delta, Delta sigma, chi (parallel), and C (perpendicular) in the nu=0, J=0 rovibrational ground state of the xenon dimer are also reported.

RESUMO

IR spectroscopy, laser induced fluorescence (LIF), and thermoluminescence (TL) measurements have been combined to monitor trapping, thermal mobility, and reactions of oxygen atoms in solid xenon. HXeO and O(3) have been used as IR active species that probe the reactions of oxygen atoms. N(2)O and H(2)O have been used as precursors for oxygen atoms by photolysis at 193 nm. Upon annealing of matrices after photolysis, ozone forms at two different temperatures: at 18-24 K from close O ...O(2) pairs and at approximately 27 K due to global mobility of oxygen atoms. HXeO forms at approximately 30 K reliably at higher temperature than ozone. Both LIF and TL show activation of oxygen atoms around 30 K. Irradiation at 240 nm after the photolysis at 193 nm depletes the oxygen atom emission at 750 nm and reduces the amount of HXeO generated in subsequent annealing. Part of the 750 nm emission can be regenerated by 266 nm and this process increases the yield of HXeO in annealing as well. Thus, we connect oxygen atoms emitting at 750 nm with annealing-induced formation of HXeO radicals. Ab initio calculations at the CCSD(T)/cc-pV5Z level show that XeO (1(1)Sigma(+)) is much more deeply bound [D(e) = 1.62 eV for XeO --> Xe+O((1)D)] than previous calculations have predicted. Taking into account the interactions with the medium in an approximate way, it is estimated that XeO (1(1)Sigma(+)) has a similar energy in solid xenon as compared with interstitially trapped O((3)P) suggesting that both possibly coexist in a low temperature solid. Taking into account the computational results and the behavior of HXeO and O(3) in annealing and irradiations, it is suggested that HXeO may be formed from singlet oxygen atoms which are trapped in a solid as XeO (1(1)Sigma(+)).

RESUMO

We report an open-shell species containing xenon, HXeO ((2)Sigma), prepared by UV photolysis of H(2)O/Xe or N(2)O/HBr/Xe solid mixtures at 7 K and subsequent thermal mobilization of oxygen atoms at >/=30 K. The H-Xe stretching absorption of HXeO in solid Xe is at 1466.1 cm(-1), and it shifts to 1070.3 cm(-1) upon deuteration. The extensive ab initio calculations indicate that HXeO is intrinsically stable, owing to significant ionic and covalent contributions to its bonding. The formation of HXeO ((2)Sigma) radicals in these experiments suggests extensive stabilization and thermal mobility of singlet ((1)D) oxygen atoms in solid Xe and holds promises for the stability of the HKrO and HArO species.
