RESUMO

The 7th Abbott-SENPE Forum is structured facing the new regulations of the European Space of High Education regarding the studies on Nutrition in the different degrees (Medicine, Pharmacology, Nutrition, Nursing) and post-doctoral education. A multi-professional and multidisciplinary discussion on the current situation of university education on nutrition, and its capabilities and limitations, is carried out. The value of the role of continuous medical education, the inhouse training programme, masters, and of scientific societies is also assessed. It is concluded that there is a need to urge academic authorities, the National Commission of Medical Specialties, the persons in charge of continuous medical education, and scientific societies of the importance of the studies relating to nutrition, feeding, and dietetics at both pre-graduate and post-graduate educational levels, and to implement and develop these studies in their areas of influence.

BACKGROUND: In Spain, there are some organizations and scientific societies that have edited reference values of recommended nutrient intake, but whose data does not always agree in terms of format and content. AIMS: To review the definitions, data and methodology that other countries or groups of countries have followed to obtain and document their own reference values in order to offer basic information to facilitate the establishment of the best reference values for the Spanish population. FIELD: Review of the available information in different countries (or groups of countries) from the European Union, the United States and World Health Organization. The analysed data concerned to healthy populations. CONCLUSIONS: Reference intakes differ among the examined countries according to population groups, included nutrients, methodology and frequency of published reviews. However, most of the countries define major concepts in the same way, although with different names in each country. On the other hand, most of the studied cases represent only a scientific organization in charge of the publication and update of the values of dietary reference intakes, but not in Spain. In that context, it looks convenient to reach a consensus among all Spanish organizations and scientific societies that are involved in this task, in order to establish an acceptable reference values.

(AU)

RESUMO

Dietetic intervention has the following aims: to achieve a negative energy balance, obtain a healthy weight in the obese person and achieve the installation of healthy eating habits in order to maintain weight loss in the long term. Considering dietetic treatment of obesity as a process that is maintained for long periods of time, dietetic intervention should be carried out depending on the physio-pathological and psycho-social characteristics of the obese person. Besides, dietetic therapy should be balanced, healthy and adapted to the eating preferences of the patient. Over the years, due to need and the quest for rapid weight loss, magic diets have been occasioned, created and invented that have become popular and that lack proven efficacy and scientific rigour. This paper makes reference to a balanced hypocaloric diet and reviews the slimming diets that are best known and most used by the obese and/or overweight population.
