RESUMO

Plastic particles, measuring <5 mm in size, mainly originate from larger plastic debris undergoing degradation, fragmenting into even smaller fragments. The goal was to analyze the spatial diversity and polymer composition of microplastics (MPs) in North Chennai, South India, aiming to evaluate their prevalence and features like composition, dimensions, color, and shape. In 60 sediment samples, a combined count of 1589 particles were detected, averaging 26 particles per 5 g-1 of dry sediment. The water samples from the North Chennai vicinity encompassed a sum of 1588 particles across 71 samples, with an average of 22 items/L. The majority of MPs ranged in size from 1 mm to 500 µm. The ATR-FTIR results identified the predominant types of MPs as polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polypropylene in sediment and water. The spatial variation analysis revealed high MPs concentration in landfill sites, areas with dense populations, and popular tourist destinations. The pollution load index in water demonstrated that MPs had contaminated all stations. Upon evaluating the polymeric and pollution risks, it was evident that they ranged from 5.13 to 430.15 and 2.83 to 15,963.2, which is relatively low to exceedingly high levels. As the quantity of MPs and hazardous polymers increased, the level of pollution and corresponding risks also escalated significantly. The existence of MPs in lake water, as opposed to open well water, could potentially pose a cancer risk for both children and adults who consume it. Detecting MPs in water samples highlights the significance of implementing precautionary actions to alleviate the potential health hazards they create.

RESUMO

Plastic waste has become a global issue and a threat to the ecosystem. The present study isolated polyurethane (PU) degrading bacterial species from soil dumped with plastic wastes. Four bacterial isolates, RS1, RS6, RS9 and RS13 were obtained and their ability to degrade PU in a synthetic medium with PU as a sole source of carbon was assessed individually. After thirty days of incubation, the highest PU weight loss of 67.36 ± 0.32% was recorded in the medium containing RS13 isolate. The results of FTIR revealed the occurrence of carbonyl peaks. The putative isolate RS13 confirmed with the genus Moraxella according to 16S rRNA gene sequencing and the isolate was specified as Moraxella catarrhalis strain BMPPS3. The restriction analysis of Moraxella catarrhalis strain BMPPS3 revealed that the GCAT content to 51% and 49% correspondingly. Moraxella catarrhalis strain BMPPS3 was able to colonize on PU surface and form a biofilm as revealed by SEM investigation. Fatty acids and alkanes were found to be the degradation products by GC-MS analysis. The presence of these metabolites facilitated the growth of strain RS13 and suggested that ester hydrolysis products had been mineralized into CO2 and H2O. Extracellular biosurfactant synthesis has also been found in Moraxella catarrhalis strain BMPPS13 inoculated with synthetic media and mineral salt media containing PU and glucose as carbon sources, respectively with a significant level of cell-surface hydrophobicity (32%). The production and activity of extracellular esterase showed consistent increase from day 1-15 which peaked (1.029 mM/min/mg) on day 24 significantly at P < 0.001. Crude biosurfactants were lipopeptide-based, according to the characteristic investigation. According to this study findings, Moraxella catarrhalis produces biosurfactants of the esterase, urethanase and lipase (lipopeptide) types when carbon source PU is present.

RESUMO

CASE: A 29-year-old young active man with ununited necrosed proximal fifth of scaphoid with chronic scapholunate ligament disruption was managed by excision of proximal pole fragment and interosseous scapholunate reconstruction using modified Brunelli triple ligament tenodesis technique with satisfying outcome at 6 months and return to sports instructor job by the end of 1 year. CONCLUSION: Meticulous understanding and algorithmic itemwise approach of injury components can lead to optimal management of complex unstable wrist injuries such as scapholunate dissociation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on excision of proximal pole of scaphoid coupled with scapholunate ligament reconstruction.

RESUMO

Presence of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in a waterbody or a river can be caused by multiple parameters such as other pollutants by the discharge of poorly maintained sewage, siltation, sedimentation, flood and even bacteria. In this study, remote sensing techniques were used to understand the effects of pandemic-induced lockdown on the SPM concentration in the lower Tapi reservoir or Ukai reservoir. The estimation was done using Landsat-8 OLI (Operational Land Imager) having radiometric resolution (12-bit) and a spatial resolution of 30 m. The Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform was used in this study to generate the products. The GEE is a semi-automated workflow system using a robust approach designed for scientific analysis and visualization of geospatial datasets. An algorithm was deployed, and a time-series (2013-2020) analysis was done for the study area. It was found that the average mean value of SPM in Tapi River during 2020 is lowest than the last seven years at the same time.

RESUMO

Epithelioid sarcoma of the spine has been rarely reported in the literature. Its diagnosis is challenging due to nonspecific findings. We report a case of 42-year-old gentleman with back pain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed lesion in the L4 vertebral body extending into the spinal canal with pre and paravertebral involvement. He underwent posterior spinal decompression and instrumentation with biopsy. Histopathological examination was nonspecific. Considering clinical and radiological features, antitubercular treatment was initiated. The patient developed acute onset weakness of both lower extremities 1 month post-surgery. Repeat MRI and positron emission tomography (PET) computed tomography revealed an increase in the extent of lesion which required revision decompression. Histopathological examination showed cells with epithelioid appearance, positive for Vimentin, and epitheloid membrane antigen in immunohistochemistry. Radiotherapy was planned but the patient expired due to multiorgan dysfunction. Epithelioid sarcomas are rare soft-tissue neoplasms with poor prognosis. They can mimic infection and a high degree of suspicion is required in these cases to diagnose and treat them early.

RESUMO

In this study, an injectable chitosan-hyaluronic acid (CS-HA) based hydrogel was designed incorporating pro-angiogenic molecule, deferoxamine loaded PLGA nanoparticles (DFO NPs), for enhancing angiogenesis. DFO-NPs were prepared by double emulsion solvent diffusion technique and characterized for their physicochemical properties. The DLS and SEM analysis showed an average particle size of 220±71nm with spherical morphology and the encapsulation efficiency was found to be 30±5%. An ECM mimicking chitosan-hyaluronic acid (CS-HA) coacervate hydrogel was prepared. Both free DFO and DFO NPs were entrapped into the prepared CS-HA composite hydrogel. The hydrogels were characterized by SEM, FTIR and Rheology. Addition of DFO NPs did not affect the injectablility and flowability of developed hydrogels. In vitro DFO release from the prepared composite hydrogels showed controlled release over a period of 10days. Both the hydrogel systems showed excellent cyto-compatability and good cell proliferation for rASCs as well as HUVECs. The DFO and DFO NPs loaded composite hydrogels revealed effective tube formation in comparison with control hydrogels without DFO and DFO NPs. The in vivo angiogenic evaluation of the free DFO and DFO NPs (0.025%w/w) loaded composite hydrogels were studied by injecting the developed hydrogel subcutaneously into mice for 2-4 weeks. The DFO NPs loaded composite hydrogel had enhanced neovascularization when compared to control gels. Thus, the developed DFO NPs loaded composite hydrogel could potentially be used for therapeutic angiogenesis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The anatomy and physiology of the ear is complex in nature, which makes it a challenge for audiologists to prescribe solutions for varied hearing-impaired subjects. There is a need to increase the satisfaction level of hearing-aid users by adopting better strategies that involve modern technological advancements. AIM: To design and develop a decision support Software Intelligent System (SIS) that performs audiological investigations to assess the degree of hearing loss and to suggest appropriate hearing-aid gain values. METHODS: SIS is developed based on the study conducted in the Government General Hospital, Chennai, India, between 2013 and 2015. In the study period, audiological investigations were performed on 368 subjects, using the clinical audiometer (Inventis-Piano, Italy) and the SIS. Gain suggestions were recommended for hearing-aid users (Siemens Intuis life & Intuis-SP) using standard prescriptive procedures, alterations made by the audiologists, and by the SIS. It was developed with artificial neural network-based gain predictions. RESULTS: Of the tested subjects, 256 were identified as hearing-impaired. The calculated sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the computerised audiometer incorporated in the SIS are 93%, 85% and 90% respectively. Furthermore, 86% of the hearing-impaired subjects were satisfied during their first hearing-aid trial with the gain recommendations from SIS. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that the proposed SIS could be used to perform audiological screening tests and to recommend appropriate hearing-aid gain values to the hearing-impaired subjects. This could eventually be helpful for audiologists in the areas where routine mass audiological screening and fast hearing-aid solution is required.

RESUMO

The main aim of the current study is to formulate the Doxorubicin loaded functionalized carbon nanotubes to deliver the drug only to the cancer cells by using pH difference. Multi walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWNTs) have been identified as an efficient drug carrier through π-π linkage, because this covalent bond is sensitive to tumor microenvironments. This bond is acid cleavable, thereby providing a strong pH-responsive drug release, which may facilitate effective release near the acidic tumor microenvironment and thus reduces its overall systemic toxicity. Doxorubicin was released at low pH and taken up by tumor cells via adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-dependent endocytosis. By varying the Concentration of MWNTs with the Doxorubicin, it forms a conjugate. It is due to supra molecular interactions between the drug and MWNTs, so it shows high loading, prolonged release and improved cytotoxicity against cancer cells. This study shows the phenomenal pH responsive drug release to the cancerous microenvironment and prolonged release. This study suggests that MWNTs have a great potential as a drug carrier; the efficient formulation strategy requires further study.
