Soliton complexes highlight the particle-like dynamics of dissipative pulses. However, simple and reliable manipulation of bound solitons remains challenging, particularly for all-polarization-maintaining (PM) configurations that are free from random polarization perturbations. Here, we report controllable pulse patterns of robustly coexisting dichromatic soliton complexes in an all-PM fiber laser based on a twistable tapered-fiber filter. According to the twist angle, dichromatic pulses are switched between different patterns, and components at each wavelength can be independently manipulated, extending encodings from the time to the frequency domain. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first experimental demonstration of dual-wavelength soliton complexes that different pulse patterns coexist at separated wavebands.

We present for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the pump-power-controlled, all-polarization-maintaining (all-PM), all-fiber configured, wavelength-tunable mode-locked fiber laser in the L-band (1565 to 1625 nm). A tuning range over 20 nm (1568.2  to 1588.9 nm) is attained simply by varying the pump power between 45 and 115 mW. Our work represents the first demonstration of wavelength tuning in all-PM configured nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) lasers. The non-mechanical and electrically controllable tuning method offers ease of use and cost efficiency within an advanced all-PM, all-fiber design, indicating promising adaptability to diverse wavelength bands.

Three hundred one-day-old Avian 48 broiler chicks were used to investigate the effect of lignocellulose (LC) and probiotic supplementation in broiler chicken diet on growth performance, digestive health, litter quality, and some gene expression. Experimental treatments consisted of 3 × 2 factorial arrangements with 3 levels of LC without or with probiotics to formulate 6 experimental groups. Groups 1, 2, and 3 were fed on the basal diet with dietary LC inclusion at 0, 0.5, and 1.0%, respectively, while groups 4, 5, and 6 were fed on the previously mentioned design with Bacillus subtilis at 100 gm/ton. The results revealed that Dietary LC inclusion nonsignificantly (P ≥ 0.05) reduced body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG), and feed intake. Meanwhile, B. subtilis supplementation improved BW and BWG and enhanced the effect of LC on the broilers' weight. The group fed a 0.5% LC and B. subtilis-supplemented diet recorded the best (P ≥ 0.05) BW, BWG, FCR, PER, EEU, and PI. LC and or B. subtilis supplementation improved carcass traits of broiler (higher dressing% with lower abdominal fat% compared with a control group), intestinal health, and absorptive capacity. LC potentiates the effect of B. subtilis supplementation in broilers' diet in modulating intestinal microflora (lowered (P ≥ 0.05) cecal Coliform and increased Lactobacillus counts), the highest Coliform counts were recorded in group fed 0.5 or 1.0% LC plus B. subtilis. LC at 0.5 or 1.0% and or B. subtilis supplementation reduced (P ≥ 0.05) litter moisture% at the 2nd, 4th, and 6th wk compared to the control group. Dietary inclusion of LC and or B. subtilis supplementation significantly (P < 0.001) up-regulated hepatic growth-related genes (growth hormone receptor (GHR) and insulin growth factor1 (IGF-1)) and antioxidant-related genes (superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), glutathione peroxidase (GPX1) and uncoupling protein (UCP) and down-regulated (P < 0.001) splenic toll-like receptor 4 (TLRP) gene expression while had no significant effect on splenic interleukin 8 (IL8) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) with the best-obtained results with 1.0% followed by 0.5% LC with B. subtilis supplementation. We concluded that dietary LC and/or B. subtilis supplementation positively affected the growth performance, feed efficiency, carcass quality, intestinal absorptive capacity and health, litter quality and growth, and antioxidant and immune-related gene expression.

Recent declines in insect abundances, especially populations of wild pollinators, pose a threat to many natural and agricultural ecosystems. Traditional species monitoring relies on morphological character identification and is inadequate for efficient and standardized surveys. DNA barcoding has become a standard approach for molecular identification of organisms, aiming to overcome the shortcomings of traditional biodiversity monitoring. However, its efficacy depends on the completeness of reference databases. Large DNA barcoding efforts are (almost entirely) lacking in many European countries and such patchy data limit Europe-wide analyses of precisely how to apply DNA barcoding in wild bee identification. Here, we advance towards an effective molecular identification of European wild bees. We conducted a high-effort survey of wild bees at the junction of central and southern Europe and DNA barcoded all collected morphospecies. For global analyses, we complemented our DNA barcode dataset with all relevant European species and conducted global analyses of species delimitation, general and genus-specific barcoding gaps and examined the error rate in DNA data repositories. We found that (i) a sixth of all specimens from Slovenia could not be reliably identified, (ii) species delimitation methods show numerous systematic discrepancies, (iii) there is no general barcoding gap across all bees and (iv) the barcoding gap is genus specific, but only after curating for errors in DNA data repositories. Intense sampling and barcoding efforts in underrepresented regions and strict curation of DNA barcode repositories are needed to enhance the use of DNA barcoding for the identification of wild bees.

PURPOSE: This paper aims to investigate associations between early childhood and current indicators of socioeconomic inequality and the onset (incident), persistence and progression (increase in severity) of psychotic experiences (PEs) in a longitudinal follow-up of a community-based population. METHODS: Households in the metropolitan area of Izmir, Turkey were contacted in a multistage clustered probability sampling frame, at baseline (T1, n = 4011) and at 6-year follow-up (T2, n = 2185). Both at baseline and follow-up, PEs were assessed using Composite International Diagnostic Interview 2.1. The associations between baseline socioeconomic features and follow-up PEs were analysed using logistic regression models. Indicators of social inequality included income, educational level, current socioeconomic status (SES), social insurance, the area resided, ethnicity, parental educational level, and SES at birth. RESULTS: The risk of onset of PEs was significantly higher in lower education, lower SES, and slum-semi-urban areas. The persistence of PEs was significantly associated with the lowest levels of education and current SES, and rural residency. Persistent PEs were significantly and negatively associated with paternal SES at birth. Progression of PEs was significantly higher among respondents with educational achievements lower than university level and lower levels of SES, who have no social insurance and who reside in slum-semi-urban areas. Parental education and paternal SES at birth were not associated with the persistence of PEs. CONCLUSION: Indicators of social inequality (low education, low SES, low income, and poverty in the neighbourhood) were associated with the onset and persistence of PEs and progression along the extended psychosis phenotype. The early indicators seem to have a modest life-long impact on the psychosis phenotype.

This study investigated the effects of nanomethionine (nano-meth) on performance, antioxidants, and gene expression of HSP70, HSP90 and Heat Shock factor-1 (HSF-1) from the liver, and TLR4 from the jejunum, of broiler chickens reared under normal temperatures or under heat stress. Three hundred 1-day-old chicks were randomly assigned to 5 treatment groups. Group 1 served as control. Under normal temperature, birds in group 2 received nano-meth (10 mL/L of drinking water) from d1 until the experiment ended. Group 3 birds were heat-stressed (HS) and did not receive any supplementation. Group 4 received nano-meth in the same dose from d1 old until experiment ended, and the birds were exposed to HS. Group 5 birds were HS and received supplementation of nano-meth during the HS period only. Nano-meth improved (P < 0.0001) final body weight, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and also decreased (P < 0.0001) the effect of HS on growth performance. Reduction (P < 0.0001) in malondialdehyde and changes in antioxidant enzymes GPX and CAT activity indicated the antioxidant effect of nano-meth. Nano-meth supplementation caused an increase in the expression of HSP70 , HSP90 and HSF1, and a downregulation of TLR4 gene expression. Additionally, nano-meth-supplemented groups showed marked improvement in the histological liver structure, intestinal morphology and villus height compared to control or HS groups.

Bacterial canker caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (Pss) is responsible for substantial loss to the production of sweet cherry in Chile. To date, the molecular mechanisms of the Pss-sweet cherry interaction and the disease-related genes in the plant are poorly understood. In order to gain insight into these aspects, a transcriptomic analysis of the sweet cherry cultivar 'Lapins' for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in response to Pss inoculation was conducted. Three Pss strains, A1M3, A1M197, and 11116_b1, were inoculated in young twigs, and RNA was extracted from tissue samples at the inoculation site and distal sections. RNA sequencing and transcriptomic expression analysis revealed that the three strains induced different patterns of responses in local and distal tissues. In the local tissues, A1M3 triggered a much more extensive response than the other two strains, enriching DEGs especially involved in photosynthesis. In the distal tissues, the three strains triggered a comparable extent of responses, among which 11116_b1 induced a group of DEGs involved in defense responses. Furthermore, tissues from various inoculations exhibited an enrichment of DEGs related to carbohydrate metabolism, terpene metabolism, and cell wall biogenesis. This study opened doors to future research on the Pss-sweet cherry interaction, immunity responses, and disease control.

For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, in the soliton regime, we demonstrate an L-band fiber laser mode-locked by all polarization-maintaining (all-PM) nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). A numerical study suggests that lengthening the NPR section boosts modulation depth and lowers saturation power of the artificial saturable absorber (SA). With the longest NPR section to date (21 m), the laser emits 1.25-ps soliton pulses at 1584.2 nm and a 3.9-MHz repetition rate. Our laser provides a promising L-band seed source, exhibiting improved repeatability and stability compared with non-PM L-band pulse fiber lasers.

Ranging ambiguity is the major challenge in most LiDAR techniques with amplitude modulation, which limits the performance of range detection due to the tradeoff between the ranging precision and the unambiguous range. Here we propose a novel disambiguation method using a laser with chirped amplitude modulation (sweeping modulation frequency), which can in theory infinitely expand the unambiguous range and completely solve the ranging ambiguation problem. The usage of the earlier proposed Chirped Amplitude-Modulated Phase-Shift (CAMPS) technique enables us to detect the phase-shift of chirped signals with high precision. Incorporating this technique with the proposed disambiguation method, the absolute distance well beyond the conventional unambiguous range can easily be found with merely <1% frequency sweep range. When certain conditions are met, the Non-Mechanical Spectrally Scanned LiDAR (NMSL) system employing the CAMPS method and the Dispersion-Tuned Swept Laser (DTSL) can also realize disambiguation in non-mechanical line-scanning measurement.

Wavelength tunable mode-locked fiber lasers have highly potential applications in precision spectroscopy, nonlinear microscopy and photonic sensing. Here, we present a compact and thermal-sensitive reflective Lyot filter and utilize it for all-polarization-maintaining efficiently wavelength-tunable Er-doped carbon-nanotube-mode-locked laser for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The output wavelength of the laser can be tuned from 1544.46 nm to 1572.71 nm, with a wide tuning range of 28.25 nm, and a remarkable tuning efficiency of 0.589 nm/°C, when the angle-spliced fiber is only 8.2 cm and the free spectral range of the filter is 31.32 nm. Dual-wavelength mode-locking is also achieved at boundary temperatures when increasing the pump power. Due to its compact size and reflection configuration, the proposed reflective Lyot filter is promising for realizing highly efficient wavelength tuning and multiwavelength generation in all-polarization-maintaining fiber lasers where reflective filters are needed.

Present day strategies for delivery of wireless photodynamic therapy (PDT) to deep-seated targets are limited by the inadequacy of irradiance and insufficient therapeutic depth. Here we report the design and preclinical validation of a flexible wireless upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) implant (SIRIUS) that is capable of large field, high intensity illumination for PDT of deep-seated tumors. The implant achieves this by incorporating submicrometer core-shell-shell NaYF4 UCNPs into its design, which significantly enhances upconversion efficiency and mitigates light loss from surface quenching. We demonstrate the efficacy of SIRIUS UCNP implant mediated PDT in preclinical breast cancer disease models. In our in vitro experiments, SIRIUS directed 5-Aminolevulinic Acid (5-ALA) based wireless PDT leads to significant reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and tumor apoptosis in hormonal receptor+/HER2+ (MCF7) and triple-negative (MDA-MB-231) breast cancer cell lines. In our in vivo rodent model, SIRIUS-driven PDT is shown to be significant in regressing tumors when applied to orthotopically inoculated breast tumors. Following successful preclinical validation, we also describe a clinical prototype of UCNP breast implant with potential dual cosmetic and onco-therapeutic functions. SIRIUS is an upconversion breast implant for wireless PDT that fulfils all the design prerequisites necessary for seamless clinical translation.

Coherent and flat supercontinuum (SC) sources are demanded for applications of metrology, spectroscopy, and bio-imaging. However, the process of SC generation is usually very complicated. We demonstrated a convenient and efficient method based on a genetic algorithm (GA). According to an objective spectrum, this algorithm could reverse-design the geometry of a fiber or waveguide without knowing the specific non-linear processes involved. Using this method, we designed a dispersion-managed photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for SC generation at 1 GHz comb spacing. With an input pulse of ∼150 fs, 450 pJ at 1050 nm, a 3 dB fluctuation spectrum ranging from 510 nm to 850 nm is obtained, which is absolutely fit to the calibration of an astronomical spectrograph.

Introduction Orthodontic service provision relies on good organisational systems for high standards of patient care and safety. Human factors (HFs) are non-technical skills associated with communication, leadership and teamwork, important for safe patient care. This investigation explored attitudes and understanding of HFs within orthodontic clinical training in the United Kingdom.Materials and methods A questionnaire-based qualitative and quantitative analysis including members of the orthodontic clinical team was undertaken at two teaching centres. A modified Operating Rooms Managements Attitudes questionnaire was used with a 5-point Likert scale. Participants indicated agreement or disagreement with statements around nine themes: leadership structure; confidence assertion; information sharing; stress; fatigue; teamwork; work values; error-procedural compliance; and organisational climate. Internal consistency among themes was assessed with Cronbach's alpha and differences in responses with chi-squared tests at 5%.Results In total, 80 responses were received from 96 invitees. Positive attitudes towards teamwork, error-procedural compliance, and organisational climate were found. Orthodontic consultants, trainees, and nurses recognised that human error is not a sign of incompetence. Stress and fatigue were less acknowledged by consultants and trainee groups. Trainees, nurses and therapists valued information sharing over the consultant group. Orthodontic trainees and nurse responses suggested further training might be required in leadership structure, confidence assertion, and work values.Conclusions Differences in attitudes and understanding of HFs within different professional groups in the orthodontic team exist.

We demonstrate for the first time a strain-controlled all polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber Lyot filter based on a piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) fiber stretcher. This filter is implemented in an all-PM mode-locked fiber laser to serve as a novel wavelength-tuning mechanism for fast wavelength sweeping. The center wavelength of the output laser can be tuned across a range from 1540 nm to 1567 nm linearly. And the strain sensitivity achieved in the proposed all-PM fiber Lyot filter is 0.052nm/µÎµ, which is 43 times higher than that achievable by other strain-controlled filters such as a fiber Bragg grating filter (0.0012nm/µÎµ). Wavelength-swept rates up to 500 Hz and wavelength tuning speeds up to 13,000 nm/s are demonstrated, which is hundreds of times faster than what is attainable with conventional sub-picosecond mode-locked lasers based on mechanical tuning methods. This highly repeatable and swift wavelength-tunable all-PM fiber mode-locked laser is a promising source for applications requiring fast wavelength tunability, such as coherent Raman microscopy.

The possible anticancer activity of combination (M + E + F) of metformin (M), efavirenz (E), and fluoxetine (F) was investigated in normal HDF cells and HCT116 human colon cancer cells. Metformin increased cellular FOXO3a, p-FOXO3a, AMPK, p-AMPK, and MnSOD levels in HDFs but not in HCT116 cells. Cellular ATP level was decreased only in HDFs by metformin. Metformin increased ROS level only in HCT116 cells. Transfection of si-FOXO3a into HCT116 reversed the metformin-induced cellular ROS induction, indicating that FOXO3a/MnSOD is the key regulator for cellular ROS level. Viability readout with M, E, and F alone decreased slightly, but the combination of three drugs dramatically decreased cell survival in HCT116, A549, and SK-Hep-1 cancer cells but not in HDF cells. ROS levels in HCT116 cells were massively increased by M + E + F combination, but not in HDF cells. Cell cycle analysis showed that of M + E + F combination caused cell death only in HCT116 cells. The combination of M + E + F reduced synergistically mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial electron transport chain complex I and III activities in HCT116 cells when compared with individual treatments. Western blot analysis indicated that DNA damage, apoptosis, autophagy, and necroptosis-realated factors increased in M + E + F-treated HCT116 cells. Oral administration with M + E + F combination for 3 weeks caused dramatic reductions in tumor volume and weight in HCT116 xenograft model of nude mice when compared with untreated ones. Our results suggest that M + E + F have profound anticancer activity both in vitro and in vivo via a cancer cell-specific ROS amplification (CASRA) through ROS-induced DNA damage, apoptosis, autophagy, and necroptosis.

The present study examines the role of personality traits, interpersonal relationships, and sociodemographic factors on perceived stress, related to COVID-19, and compliance with measures to mitigate its spread. Data were collected in the midst of the 'first wave' lockdown, with the survey completed in full by 963 participants. We measured stress, directly related to the pandemic, rather than general stress, and were able to distinguish between symptoms of emotional, behavioural, cognitive, physical stress, and alienation with high concordance. We included personality scoring with standardized T-scores, allowing for cross-study comparison, and a broader questionnaire on the participants' support for COVID-19 mitigation measures. Results of the multiple regression models indicated that low emotional stability and introversion, and high conscientiousness, common conflicts with loved ones, and some demographics (female gender, middle age, chronic health problems) correspond to elevated stress. Conscientiousness was positively associated with total stress and some of its components, whereas opposite results were found for emotional stability. Extraversion was negatively correlated to total stress, its emotional and physical components, and alienation. Surprisingly, increased stress was not related to greater measure adherence. The present results shed light on how personality, interpersonal relationships, and sociodemographic factors influence people's stress response during a pandemic.
