INTRODUCTION: Depression is one of many comorbid conditions associated with diabetes. The rationale for this study is to examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms in adults with diabetes mellitus type II. Furthermore, the association between depressive symptoms and glycemic control will also be analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A chart review of 59 diabetes mellitus type II patients from a family practice clinic in San Juan, Texas was performed. These patients were screened for depressive symptoms using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) during their annual physical exam. Since many of these patients have been treated in this clinic for many years for their multiple comorbidities, it is possible to evaluate their responses to the PHQ-9 over consecutive years and compare them with their glycemic control using a HbA1c level. Data was evaluated by using biological parameters, such as age and gender, and the clinical parameter of a HbA1c level. Inferential statistics, such as prevalence, frequency, correlation, and p-value, were also used in analyzing the data. RESULTS: Depressive symptoms were analyzed using the PHQ-9. In 2016, 2017, and 2018, female diabetics were found to have a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms. When comparing diabetes and age, in 2016, those who were between the ages of 65 and 74 and 75 and older had a higher incidence of depressive symptoms. Furthermore, in 2017 and 2018, patients 75 and older also had a higher frequency of depressive symptoms. The controlled diabetic population was also found to have a greater rate of depressive symptoms. However, after careful analyzation, there was no significant relationship between glycemic control and depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION: Many diabetics have comorbid depressive symptoms. Even though this study showed no relationship between depressive symptoms and glycemic control, the treatment of depressive symptoms in diabetics may help to prevent the multiple life altering complications that diabetes can cause.

Probiotic metabolites, known as postbiotics, have received attention due to their wide variety of promoting health effects. One of the most exciting postbiotic is gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), widely produced by lactic acid bacteria, due to its benefits in health. In addition, the performance of the biosynthesis of GABA by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum could be modulated through the modification of fermentation parameters. Due to their high nutritional value, agri-food by-products could be considered a useful fermentation source for microorganisms. Therefore, these by-products were proposed as fermentation substrates to produce GABA in this study. Previously, several experiments in Man Rogosa Sharpe (MRS) broth were performed to identify the most critical parameters to produce GABA using the strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum K16. The percentage of inoculum, the initial pH, and the concentration of nutrients, such as monosodium glutamate or glucose, significantly affected the biosynthetic pathway of GABA. The highest GABA yield was obtained with 500 mM of monosodium glutamate and 25 g/L of glucose, and an initial pH of 5.5 and 1.2% inoculum. Furthermore, these investigated parameters were used to evaluate the possibility of using tomato, green pepper, apple, or orange by-products to get GABA-enriched fermented media, which is an excellent way to revalorise them.

Summit Lake, Nevada (USA) is the last high-desert terminal lake to have a native self-sustaining population of threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi). From spring 2015 to fall 2017, we quantified adult abundance and survival and the total annual spawning run. Abundance and survival were estimated with mark-recapture using PIT tags, and the annual spawning run was estimated with PIT tag detections and counts of spawners. Adult abundance fluctuated from 830 (95% CI 559-1248) to 1085 (95% CI 747-1614), with no overall temporal trend, as a decrease in male abundance was generally offset by an equal increase in female abundance. Estimated mean adult survival was 0.51 (95% CI 0.44-0.58). The spawning run increased from 645 (2015) to 868 (2016), but then decreased slightly to 824 (2017, mean = 789 ± 118). Female spawners increased in 2016 but decreased slightly in 2017, whereas male spawners decreased each year. In addition, the proportion of adults that spawned each year increased overall. Our study suggests that the adult population remained stable although most of the study period included the recent, severe regional drought in the western United States (2012-2016).

Pediatric cardiothoracic surgery is often associated with low cardiac output in the postoperative period. This study sought to determine whether increasing heart rate via temporary atrial pacing is beneficial in augmenting cardiac output. Patients younger than 18 years who underwent cardiothoracic surgery and had no perioperative arrhythmias were eligible for the study. Patients not paced postoperatively were atrial paced at a rate of 15 % above the intrinsic sinus rate (not to exceed 170 beats per minute, less for older patients) for 15 min. Patients paced for cardiac output postoperatively had their pacemakers paused for 15 min. Markers of cardiac output were measured before and after the intervention. Of the 60 patients who consented to participate, 30 completed the study. Failure to complete the study was due to tachycardia (n = 13), lack of pacing wires (n = 7), junctional rhythm (n = 4), advanced atrioventricular block (n = 3), and other cause (n = 3). Three patients were paced at baseline. There was no change in arteriovenous oxygen saturation difference, mean arterial blood pressure, central venous pressure, toe temperature, or lactate with atrial pacing. Atrial pacing was associated with a decrease in head and flank near-infrared spectroscopy (p = 0.01 and <0.01 respectively). Secondary analysis found an inverse relationship between mean arterial pressure response to pacing and bypass time. Temporary atrial pacing does not improve cardiac output after pediatric cardiac surgery and may be deleterious. Future research may identify subsets of patients who benefit from this strategy. Practitioners considering this strategy should carefully evaluate each patient's response to atrial pacing before its implementation.
