RESUMO

Objective: The impact of JAK2V617F allele burden on clinical course in Philadelphia-negative (Ph-negative) myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) is not clear. We analyzed the clinical impact of JAK2V617F allele burden in a relatively large series of patients with Ph-negative MPNs and long-term follow-up. Materials and Methods: A total of 228 patients with Ph-negative MPNs, including 118 with essential thrombocythemia (ET), 84 with primary myelofibrosis (PMF), and 26 with polycythemia vera (PV), were analyzed. The JAK2 MutaScreen assay was used to quantify JAK2V617F allele burden in genomic DNA. Results: In PV cases, high JAK2V617F allele burden was associated with a trend towards inferior overall survival. In ET, high JAK2V617F allele burden was associated with lower hemoglobin and hematocrit levels, higher lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels, larger spleen size, and increased bleeding and mortality rates. In PMF, high JAK2V617F allele burden was associated with higher leukocyte counts and larger spleen size. In the entire cohort, high allele burden was associated with higher leukocyte and lower platelet counts, higher LDH levels, larger spleen size, higher percentage of bleeding events, higher death rate, and inferior overall survival. Conclusion: Our results suggest that high JAK2V617F allele burdens are associated with more severe disease in PV and ET. In PMF, high JAK2V617F allele burdens were associated with more pronounced myeloproliferative phenotypes. In Ph-negative MPNs, high allele burdens were associated with more aggressive phenotypes. Our data with a long follow-up period support the possibility of JAK2V617F allele burden being used as a marker for predicting clinical phenotype in cases of Ph-negative MPNs.

RESUMO

Land use and land cover (LULC) change analysis of the construction site and its surroundings of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant project in southern Turkey was undertaken in this case study, which was supported by remotely sensed Landsat 8 image composites. The composite images compiled in 2017 and 2021 were prepared on the Google Earth Engine platform. The Random Forest algorithm was used as the classifier model. A high classification performance was obtained for both images (kappa > 0.88, overall accuracy > 90%). After the classification process, LULC maps for both years were generated, and statistical calculations for the LULC change were computed for both the entire study area (15 × 25 km) and a buffer zone with a radius of 1 km around the power plant. In the whole study area, artificial surfaces significantly increased (78.46%), whereas forests (- 8.31%) and barren lands experienced a considerable decrease (- 6.11%). In the 1 km buffer, artificial surfaces predominantly increased (113.94%), while forests and barren lands decreased dramatically (- 69.13% and - 74.28%, respectively). The agricultural areas in the study area were changed into other LULC classes: 9.1% to artificial surfaces, 27.6% to barren lands, and 21.7% to forest. The rise in the area of artificial surfaces was especially noticeable within the 1 km buffer zone: construction activities converted 36.1% of agricultural fields, 54.1% of forests, and 23.2% of barren lands into artificial surfaces. The filling activities on the seashore resulted in a loss of water bodies of up to 26.5%. The study provides an overview of how the LULC classes have evolved on the construction site and in the region. In the end, the study discusses how the current land use preferences in the region contradict the issues and concerns mentioned in the existing body of literature.

RESUMO

Herein, we show that coupling boron with cobalt oxide tunes its structure and significantly boost its electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Through a simple precipitation and thermal treatment process, a series of Co-B oxides with tunable morphologies and textural parameters were prepared. Detailed structural analysis supported first the formation of an disordered and partially amorphous material with nanosized Co3 BO5 and/or Co2 B2 O6 being present on the local atomic scale. The boron modulation resulted in a superior OER reactivity by delivering a large current and an overpotential of 338 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Identical location transmission electron microscopy and in situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy studies revealed alteration and surface re-construction of materials, and formation of CoO2 and (oxy)hydroxide intermediate, which were found to be highly dependent on crystallinity of the samples.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Xeroderma pigmentosum is an extremely serious genetic disorder defined by sensitivity to sunlight, resulting in sunburn and pigment changes. If patients are not completely protected from ultraviolet radiation, xeroderma pigmentosum is characterized by a greatly increased risk of sunlight-induced cutaneous neoplasms. There is no standard therapy for skin cancer of xeroderma pigmentosum. However, immune checkpoint inhibitors were reported to increase response rates and improve outcomes and life expectancy in patients with various cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma in xeroderma pigmentosum. In this paper, we report on a patient with xeroderma pigmentosum from a consanguineous family with recurrent facial chemotherapy-resistant squamous cell carcinoma lesions treated successfully with an anti-programmed cell death protein 1 monoclonal antibody in both relapses. CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old Turkish male was referred to our oncology department for recurring squamous cell carcinoma after local excision of the tumor over his nose. The lesion was a rapidly growing lesion, measuring 8 × 4 cm in size. Physical examination revealed that he also had hemorrhagic crusted plaques and nodules over both eyelids and upper lip, with multiple hypo- and hyperpigmented punctate lesions all over his body. After two more cycles of chemotherapy, progressive disease was noted, and a new lesion on the right eyelid caused blurred vision. Anti-programmed cell death protein 1 antibody treatment was planned with concomitant radiotherapy. He received nivolumab every 3 weeks for 4 months, improving his vision. No new lesions or active complaints have been observed in the current situation, and complete remission has been achieved. On the last admission, the patient was clinically diagnosed with xeroderma pigmentosum. Owing to the condition's genetic heterogeneity, whole-exome sequencing was performed with Ion Proton next-generation sequencing platform, and the c.2250 + 1G>A splice site mutation of the XPC gene was detected in the homozygous state. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical report emphasizes the importance of clinical awareness and crucial early diagnosis of xeroderma pigmentosum and presents a novel causative homozygous c.2250 + 1G>A splice site mutation. Our case proves that next-generation sequencing is an effective method for the rapid diagnosis and determination of xeroderma pigmentosum genetic etiology.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Despite the advances in antiretroviral treatment (ART), persistent inflammation remained a challenge. We analyzed the inflammatory-score changes through 2-years in people living with HIV (PLWH) treated with different antiretroviral regimes. METHODS: This study was conducted in Hacettepe University HIV/AIDS Treatment and Research Center. PLWH diagnosed between 2014 and 2020 were included. Inflammatory and metabolic markers (CD4/CD8 ratio, C-reactive protein (CRP), Systemic Inflammatory Index (SII), Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Platecrite (PCT), and Low-Density Lipoprotein/High-Density Lipoprotein (LDL/HDL), Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) and ARTs were captured from database through 2-years from the diagnosis. The 2-year change (Δ) in markers was calculated and compared by ART type (backbone and 3rd agent). Mann-Whitney-U test and T-test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: This study included 205 PLWH; 175 (85.4%) were male, and the mean age was 38.98 (±10.88) years. The number of PLWH with suppressed viremia (<40 HIV-RNA copies/ml) was 164 (80%) at the end of the second year. MPV increased significantly higher among PLWH receiving ABC/3TC compared to PLWH receiving TDF/FTC (p < 0.05). The CD4:CD8 ratio increased, and SII, NLR, LDL/HDL ratios decreased significantly among PLWH treated with integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTI) compared with protease inhibitors (PI) and Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Integrase inhibitor treatment is related to favorable inflammatory marker profile among PLWH in the 2-year follow-up. A favorable inflammatory profile may, in turn, contribute to the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCD) among PLWH. This study showed that simple, easy-to-calculate markers could be implemented to define ongoing inflammation among PLWH under suppressive ART.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pistacia is a genus of dioecious plant species whose trees can take 4-5 years to reach the economically valuable fruit-bearing stage. The fruits have great importance as raw material in the food, healthcare, and baking industries. For that reason, the identification of individual plants in the early juvenile period for the pollination and positioning of trees is crucial for growers. The objective of this study is to develop markers for each Pistacia species that can help in screening the sex of plant seedlings before they reach the reproductive stage, without waiting for morphological characteristics to appear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Within this context, by using the power of the kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) assay technology as a marker screening system, we successfully discriminated seven out of eight Pistacia species: P. atlantica, P. integerrima, P. khinjuk, P. mutica, P. terebinthus, P. vera, and P. lentiscus. We used a high-throughput DNA sequence read archive (SRA) to assemble a reference genome that was employed in our studies as a de novo bioinformatics method. Four genomic regions from SRA and three single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) positions from Kafkas et al. BMC Genomics 16:98, 2015) were selected and sequenced with collected plant material from predominantly the Antepfistigi Research Institute Collection Garden, and eight species were aligned intraspecifically for SNP mining. In total, 12 SNP markers were converted to KASP markers, and 5 of them (SNP-PIS-133396, SNP-PIS-167992, P-ATL-91951-565, P-INT-91951-256, P-KHI-91951-115) showed clear allelic discrimination between male and female plants. SNP-PIS-167992 and P-ATL-91951-565 were identified as the best marker assays because they showed allelic frequency differences for all individuals and for both homozygous and heterozygous characters. These markers could be the most comprehensive ones for the whole genus because they showed discriminative power for several species. CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first one to use the KASP assay for sex discrimination in Pistacia species, and it can be regarded as a precursor study for sex discrimination by KASP for plants in general.

RESUMO

This study aims to compare the effects of Negative-Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) and wet-to-dry dressing on Stages 3 and 4 pressure injuries (PI), This study is a randomized controlled trial. A total of 30 patients with Stages 3 and 4 pressure injuries were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups: NPWT group and the wet-to-dry dressing group. All patients received 3 rounds of treatment. Data were collected with a Patient Identification Form, Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) Tool and the findings of the Three-Dimensional Wound Measurement (3DWM) device. We found that granulation tissue formation was more significant in the experimental group (p < .05), and that there was more significant wound shrinkage (p < .05) with a more significant decrease in the PUSH Tool scores (p < .05). The wounds were assessed with the tool and the 3DWM system. Device measurements were found to be correlated with PUSH Tool findings (p < .05). There was a significant correlation between device-measured granulation findings and PUSH Tool score results of the experimental group's third measurements (p < .05). We conclude that NPWT is an effective treatment method for pressure injuries, and 3DWM device is a useable wound assessment tool.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Psychiatric disorders and antidepressant usage rates have increased over the years. However, prejudice, self, and public stigma continue to impede patients from receiving appropriate treatment, especially in traditional societies. In this study, the views of first and sixth-year medical students were examined. We aimed to show the potential effect of public information and 6 years of medical education on knowledge and awareness. METHOD: Our target population was first and sixth-year medical students at the Faculty of Medicine at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, during the semester 2018-2019. For measurement, widely used scales such as the Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory were administered. In addition, scales formed specifically by our research team: Sociodemographic information form and Depression and Antidepressant Awareness and Knowledge Scale were used. RESULTS: Compared to first-year participants, sixth-year participants had significantly less stigmatizing views on individual statements. The overall stigma score of sixth-year participants was significantly lower (p < .05) than first-year participants. Linear Regression Analysis showed that the only predictor of overall stigma score was the depression score (p < .05, beta = -0.36), which acted as a negative predictor. DISCUSSION: Sixth-year participants had higher rates of diagnosed psychiatric illness and psychiatric drug usage. Interestingly, the score was not a predictor of the overall stigma score. However, in the responses to individual statements, we observed an overall increase in knowledge and decreased stigma among the sixth-year participants compared to first-year participants. The effects of medical education on knowledge are significant overall. On the other hand, the level of knowledge and beliefs of our first-year participants, which are similar to the public, show a worrisome situation indicating that broader public education efforts are needed. Our study shows an encouraging perspective, indicating that public awareness campaigns can be very effective in increasing knowledge and decreasing misconceptions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: JAK2V617F mutation is expressed in almost all polycthemia vera (PV), 55% of essential thrombocythemia (ET), and 65% of primary myelofibrosis (PMF) patients. Studies investigating phenotypic effects of JAK2V617F mutation on Philadelphianegative myeloproliferative neoplasms (Ph-negative MPNs) have reported controversial results. This study aims to determine the impact of JAK2V617F mutation on clinical phenotype and outcome in Ph-negative MPNs. METHODS: Clinical correlates and long-term prognostic relevance of the JAK2V617F mutation were analyzed in 410 Phnegative MPNs-170 ET, 135 PV, 105 PMF- from two institutions and followed for a mean of 76.7 months (SD 62.1) (mean 87 months (SD 67.8), 70.4 months (SD 56.4), 68 months (SD 57.4), respectively for ET, PV, and PMF). Two hundred and twenty-eight patients were genotyped for JAK2V617F mutation using the JAK2 Ipsogen MutaScreen assay, which involves allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and 182 patients were genotyped using melting curve analysis. RESULTS: In PV patients, JAK2V617F mutation was associated with higher rate in females, lower hemoglobin (Hgb) level, higher leukocyte and platelet count and higher prevalence of thrombosis (p = 0.008, p = 0.018, p = 0.001, p = 0.001, and p = 0.035, respectively). In ET patients, JAK2V617F mutation was associated with higher Hgb and hematocrit (Hct) levels and lower platelet count (p = 0.001, p = 0.001, and p = 0.001, respectively). JAK2V617F-negative ET patients showed a trend towards higher rate of leukemic transformation (p = 0.061). JAK2V617F mutation-positive PMF patients had higher leukocyte count, greater spleen size and showed a trend towards higher Hgb level (p = 0.019, p = 0.042, and p = 0.056, respectively). Among PMF patients with JAK2V617F mutation, the rate of female patients was lower (p = 0.001). Overall survival (OS) in Dynamic International Prognostic Scoring System (DIPSS) - plus high risk PMF patients was shorter compared to the other risk groups (p = 0.001). Leukemia-free survival (LFS) was shorter in DIPSS - plus high risk PMF patients than the other risk groups (p = 0.005). In the entire cohort of Ph-negative MPN patients, JAK2V617F mutation was associated with higher leukocyte count, higher Hgb and Hct levels and lower platelet count, higher frequency of phlebotomies, a trend towards older age, a trend towards greater spleen size, a trend towards a higher prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and thrombosis (p = 0.001, p = 0.005, p = 0.001, p = 0.003, p = 0.004, p =0.052, p = 0.056, p = 0.052, and p = 0.059, respectively).

RESUMO

Optical pulses are fundamentally defined by their temporal and spectral properties. The ability to control pulse properties allows practitioners to efficiently leverage them for advanced metrology, high speed optical communications and attosecond science. Here, we report 11× temporal compression of 5.8 ps pulses to 0.55 ps using a low power of 13.3 W. The result is accompanied by a significant increase in the pulse peak power by 9.4×. These results represent the strongest temporal compression demonstrated to date on a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) chip. In addition, we report the first demonstration of on-chip spectral compression, 3.0× spectral compression of 480 fs pulses, importantly while preserving the pulse energy. The strong compression achieved at low powers harnesses advanced on-chip device design, and the strong nonlinear properties of backend-CMOS compatible ultra-silicon-rich nitride, which possesses absence of two-photon absorption and 500× larger nonlinear parameter than in stoichiometric silicon nitride waveguides. The demonstrated work introduces an important new paradigm for spectro-temporal compression of optical pulses toward turn-key, on-chip integrated systems for all-optical pulse control.

RESUMO

Amorphous Tix Oy with high surface area has attracted significant interest as photocatalyst with higher activity in ultraviolet (UV) light-induced water splitting applications compared to commercial nanocrystalline TiO2 . Under photocatalytic operation conditions, the structure of the molecular titanium alkoxide precursor rearranges upon hydrolysis and leads to higher connectivity of the structure-building units. Structurally ordered domains with sizes smaller than 7 Šform larger aggregates. The experimental scattering data can be explained best with a structure model consisting of an anatase-like core and a distorted shell. Upon exposure to UV light, the white Tix Oy suspension turns dark corresponding to the reduction of Ti4+ to Ti3+ as confirmed by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Heat-induced crystallisation was followed by in situ temperature-dependent total scattering experiments. First, ordering in the Ti-O environment takes place upon to 350 °C. Above this temperature, the distorted anatase core starts to grow but the structure obtained at 400 °C is still not fully ordered.

RESUMO

Difference-frequency generation (DFG) is elemental for nonlinear parametric processes such as optical parametric oscillation and is instrumental for generating coherent light at long wavelengths, especially in the middle infrared. Second-order nonlinear frequency conversion processes like DFG require a second-order susceptibility χ (2), which is absent in centrosymmetric materials, e.g. silicon-based platforms. All-optical poling is a versatile method for inducing an effective χ (2) in centrosymmetric materials through periodic self-organization of charges. Such all-optically inscribed grating can compensate for the absence of the inherent second-order nonlinearity in integrated photonics platforms. Relying on this induced effective χ (2) in stoichiometric silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguides, second-order nonlinear frequency conversion processes, such as second-harmonic generation, were previously demonstrated. However up to now, DFG remained out of reach. Here, we report both near- and non-degenerate DFG in all-optically poled Si3N4 waveguides. Exploiting dispersion engineering, particularly rethinking how dispersion can be leveraged to satisfy multiple processes simultaneously, we unlock nonlinear frequency conversion near 2 µm relying on all-optical poling at telecommunication wavelengths. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with theoretically predicted behaviours, validating our approach and opening the way for the design of new types of integrated sources in silicon photonics.

RESUMO

The exact formation mechanism of tantalum oxides (and in general, metal/mixed metal oxides) from alkoxide precursors is still not fully understood, particularly when forming cluster-like or amorphous materials. The structural evolution of Ta-based oxides was studied in detail using X-ray total scattering experiments along with subsequent pair distribution function (PDF) analyses. Starting from a tantalum alkoxide precursor (Ta2(OEt)10), the formation of hydrolysed TaxOyHz clusters in highly diluted aqueous solution was analysed. From the PDF data, the connectivity and arrangement of TaxOy octahedra in the cluster could be deduced as well as the approximate size of the clusters (<1 nm). Construction of cluster models allowed for identification of common structural motifs in the TaxOyHz clusters, ruling out the formation of chain- or ring-like clusters. More likely, bulky clusters with a high number of corner-sharing octahedra are formed. After separation of the amorphous solid from the liquid, temperature-induced crystallisation processes were monitored via in situ total scattering experiments. Between room temperature and 600 °C, only small rearrangements of the amorphous structure are observed. At about 610 °C, amorphous TaxOyHz transforms directly into crystalline orthorhombic L-Ta2O5 without formation of any crystalline intermediate structures.

RESUMO

Inter-individual variations in the genes encoding xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes have been reported to alter susceptibility to various diseases involving hematological disorders. The purpose of this case-control study was to investigate the relationship between CYP2D6*4 and GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphisms and the risk of developing BCR-ABL1 negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). PCR-RFLP was used for genotyping single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in CYP2D6 and GSTP1 in 139 patients with MPN and 126 controls. There was a significantly increased risk for developing BCR-ABL1 negative MPN for the group bearing the CYP2D6*4 variant allele (X2: 4.487; OR 1.738; 95% CI 1.040-2.904; p = 0.034). The platelet count was higher in CYP2D6*4 allele carriers (p = 0.047). There was no association between the GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphism and the risk of developing MPNs. MPN patients bearing the GSTP1 Ile105Val variant allele had a higher prevalence of bleeding complications (X2: 7.510; OR 4.635; 95% CI 1.466-14.650; p = 0.006). Our study provides new data that the CYP2D6*4 polymorphism may be associated with an increased risk to develop MPNs while the GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphism does not show such an association. To our knowledge, the current study is the first to investigate the relationship between CYP2D6*4 and GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphisms and the risk of developing MPNs in the Turkish population. Further studies with more patients and controls are needed to support our data.

RESUMO

In preclinical models, it has been reported that social defeat stress activates microglial cells in the CNS. Translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO) is a mitochondrial protein expressed on microglia in the CNS that has been proposed to be a useful biomarker for brain injury and inflammation. We hypothesized that a TSPO antagonist, ONO-2952, would inhibit the neuroinflammation induced by microglial hyperactivation and associated depressive-like behaviors. An in vitro analysis showed that ONO-2952 suppressed the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species in cultured microglia stimulated by lipopolysaccharide. In mice submitted to chronic social defeat stress, microglia predominantly expressed TSPO in limbic areas implicated in depressive-like behaviors, including the amygdala, ventral hippocampus and nucleus accumbens, in which an increase in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in vivo were associated. Treating animals with ONO-2952 during chronic social defeat stress ameliorated impairments in social avoidance and anxiety-like behaviors and suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokine production, suggesting that ONO-2952 exerted an anti-stress effect in this animal model of depression. Thus, targeting TSPO as a candidate for the development of antidepressants that reduce susceptibility to chronic stress could pave the way toward therapeutic interventions for relapse prophylaxis in depression.

RESUMO

An 8-channel coarse wavelength division multiplexer (CWDM) based on coupled vertical gratings has been designed, fabricated and characterized. The devices are implemented on the ultra-silicon-rich nitride (USRN) platform. The demonstrated device possesses 8 CWDM channels. The absence of free spectral range (FSR) enabled the overall multiplexed bandwidth to span across the S + C + L bands. The CWDM channels meet the specifications stipulated by the International Telecommunications Union G.694.2 standard. The average channel crosstalk is -25dB. Pseudo-Random Bit Sequence 231-1 Non-Return-Zero data at 30Gb/s was launched into the device and a clear eye diagram was obtained. The device was further used with a USRN waveguide generating supercontinuum to create a multi-wavelength source emitting light at 8 CWDM wavelengths.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between depression and healthy lifestyle behaviors of patients with a history of transplant. METHODS: This was a descriptive study. The study was conducted on 110 patients who received organ transplant and attended a university hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. Data were collected using a patient information form, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale-II. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients in years ± SD was 45.8 ± 12.35; 60.9% of them were men; and the mean body mass index (kg/m2) was 26.9 ± 4.84. There was a statistically significant difference between nutrition subscale and body mass index. A statistically significant difference was found between the total score of healthy lifestyle behaviors, nutrition, and interpersonal relationships subdimension with education status. There was a statistically significant difference between health responsibility, nutrition, and interpersonal relationships subdimension with marital status. There was a statistically significant difference between health responsibility subdimension and income status. A statistically significant difference was found between nutrition, spiritual growth, interpersonal relationships, stress management subdimension with living alone or living with someone. There was a statistically significant difference between depression scores and elapsed time after transplantation. There was a significant moderate negative correlation between depression and healthy lifestyle behaviors scores. CONCLUSION: According to results of this study, healthy lifestyle behaviors of patients with a history of organ transplant were affected by factors such as body mass index, education status, income status, and marital status. Depression levels decreased as healthy lifestyle behaviors improved for the patients of organ of the transplant.

RESUMO

The effectiveness of Pl genes is known to be resistant to downy mildew (DM) disease affected by fungus Plasmopara halstedii in sunflower. In this study phenotypic analysis was performed using inoculation tests and genotypic analysis were carried out with three DM resistance genes Plarg, Pl13 and Pl8. A total of 69 simple sequence repeat markers and 241 F2 individuals derived from a cross of RHA-419 (R) x P6LC (S), RHA-419 (R) x CL (S), RHA-419 (R) x OL (S), RHA419 (R) x 9758R (S), HA-R5 (R) x P6LC (S) and HA89 (R) x P6LC (S) parental lines were used to identify resistant hybrids in sunflower. Results of SSR analysis using markers linked with downy mildew resistance genes (Plarg, Pl8 and Pl13) and downy mildew inoculation tests were evaluated together and ORS716 (for Plarg and Pl13), HA4011 (for Pl8) markers showed positive correlation with their phenotypic results. These results suggest that these markers are associated with DM resistance and they can be used successfully in marker-assisted selection for sunflower breeding programs specific for downy mildew resistance.

RESUMO

We report on the design and experimental demonstration of a broadband silicon polarization beam splitter (PBS) with a high extinction ratio (ER)≥30 dB. This was achieved using triple-bent-waveguide directional coupling in a single PBS, and cascaded PBS topology. For the single PBS, the bandwidths for an ER≥30 dB are 20 nm for the quasi-TE mode, and 70 nm for the quasi-TM mode when a broadband light source (1520-1610 nm) was employed. The insertion loss (IL) varies from 0.2 to 1 dB for the quasi-TE mode and 0.2-2 dB for the quasi-TM mode. The cascaded PBS improved the bandwidth of the quasi-TE mode for an ER≥30 dB to 90 nm, with a low IL of 0.2-2 dB. To the best of our knowledge, our PBS system is one of the best broadband PBSs with an ER as high as ∼42 dB and a low IL below 1 dB around the central wavelength, and experimentally demonstrated using edge-coupling.
