Introduction: Tick-borne pathogens (TBP) are an important group of organisms that can affect animals and humans all over the world. Equine piroplasmosis (EP), caused by Theileria equi and Babesia caballi, is considered one of the most important tick-borne diseases and can cause significant clinical symptoms and mortality in horses. Moreover, EP plays a restrictive role in international horse traditions and transportation. Although these species can cause similar symptoms, there are different 18S rRNA genotypes of T. equi (five genotypes) and B. caballi (three genotypes). Besides piroplasma species, Anaplasma and hemotropic mycoplasmas (HM) are known as other important tick-borne pathogens reported in horses. Methods: In this study, we investigated the presence, prevalence, genetic diversity, and phylogenetic analyses of TBPs using PCRs and DNA sequencing in grazing horses in Kyrgyzstan. For these purposes, a total of 311 blood samples were collected from Chuy, Issyk-Kul, Naryn, Osh, Talas, and Jalal-Abad. Results: DNA amplification of TBP revealed that 23 (7.40%) out of 311 samples were found to be positive for T. equi. However, B. caballi, HM, A. phagocytophilum, and A. capra were not detected in this study. The infection rate of T. equi was higher in males (8.11%) than in females (6.35%) (p=0.2880) and in those older than 5 years (9.02%) than in the 1-4 age group (6.35%) (p=0.1950). Phylogenetic analysis of 18S rRNA revealed that A and E genotypes of T. equi have circulated in grazing horses in Kyrgyzstan. Discussion: Information about the genetic diversity of T. equi is important for understanding the population dynamics of the species and developing effective control strategies against this pathogen. This is the first molecular investigation of A. capra in horses in Kyrgyzstan. Although this pathogen has been detected in different hosts in Kyrgyzstan, it was not detected in this study. However, considering the wide host spectrum of A. capra, it is thought that more large-scale studies are needed to understand the effect of horses on the epidemiology of this pathogen.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the microsurgical anatomy of the superficial temporal artery (STA), explore the relationship between STA length and lumen diameter, and develop a reliable radiologic method for selecting STA segments for bypass surgery. METHODS: This study used 10 cadaveric dissections (20 STAs, both sides) and 20 retrospective radiological examinations (40 STAs, both sides), employing curved multiplanar reformation and flow color lookup table (CLUT) DICOM processing. Measurements included vessel lumen diameters and luminal cross-sectional thicknesses 3 mm proximal to the STA bifurcation, 3 mm distal to the frontal branch, 5 cm distal to the frontal branch, 3 mm distal to the parietal branch, and 5 cm distal to the parietal branch. The distance between the STA bifurcation and the superior zygomatic border (SZB) was also measured. In our analysis, descriptive statistics encompassed mean, standard deviation (SD), standard error, minimum and maximum values, and distributions. Comparative statistics were performed using Student's t-test, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between STA measurements of bifurcation distances (p = 0.88) and lumen diameters (p = 0.46) between cadavers and radiological measures. However, lumen thicknesses were larger in frontal branches than parietal branches at the seventh and eighth centimeter (p = 0.012, p = 0.039). Branches became thinner distally from the zygoma in both cadavers and radiological image measurements. CONCLUSION: The CLUT DICOM processing radiological measures provided the high-precision required to enable pre-surgical vessel selection for extracranial-intracranial bypass. The results show that STA vessel luminal diameters are sufficient (> 1 mm) for bypass surgery in the first 9 cm but gradually decrease after that. Also shown is that the choice of frontal versus parietal branches depends on individual anatomical features; therefore, careful preoperative radiological examination is critical.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a vector-borne zoonotic pathogen and can infect various vertebrate hosts, especially cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and dogs. Molecular-based studies have revealed that the agent has a high genetic diversity and closely related strains circulate in hosts. In this study, 618 sheep blood samples obtained from different geographic regions of Türkiye were researched for A.phagocytophilum and related strains with PCR, RFLP, and DNA sequence analyses. The DNA of these pathogens was detected in 110 (17.79%) samples. RFLP assay showed that all positive samples were infected with A.phagocytophilum-like 1, whereas A.phagocytophilum-like 2 and A.phagocytophilum were not detected. Partial parts of 16 S rRNA gene of seven randomly selected positive samples were sequenced. The phylogenetic analyses of these isolates revealed that at least two A.phagocytophilum-like 1 isolates circulate among hosts in Türkiye and around the world. A.phagocytophilum-related strains have been reported in molecular-based studies over the last few years, but there is a lack of data on the vector competence, epidemiology, clinical symptoms, and genetic diversity of these pathogens. Therefore, large-scale molecular studies are still needed to obtain detailed data on the above-mentioned topics.

Herein, microwave-assisted activated carbon (MW-AC) was fabricated from peanut shells using a ZnCl2 activator and utilized for the first time to eliminate benzene vapor as a volatile organic compound (VOC). During the MW-AC production process, which involved two steps-microwave treatment and muffle furnace heating-we investigated the effects of various factors and achieved the highest iodine number of 1250 mg/g. This was achieved under optimal operating conditions, which included a 100% impregnation ratio, CO2 as the gas in the microwave environment, a microwave power set at 500 W, a microwave duration of 10 min, an activation temperature of 500 °C and an activation time of 45 min. The structural and morphological properties of the optimized MW-AC were assessed through SEM, FTIR, and BET analysis. The dynamic adsorption process of benzene on the optimized MW-AC adsorbent, which has a significant BET surface area of 1204.90 m2/g, was designed using the Box-Behnken approach within the response surface methodology. Under optimal experimental conditions, including a contact duration of 80 min, an inlet concentration of 18 ppm, and a temperature of 26 °C, the maximum adsorption capacity reached was 568.34 mg/g. The experimental data are better described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while it is concluded that the equilibrium data are better described by the Langmuir isotherm model. MW-AC exhibited a reuse efficiency of 86.54% for benzene vapor after five consecutive recycling processes. The motivation of the study highlights the high adsorption capacity and superior reuse efficiency of MW-AC adsorbent with high BET surface area against benzene pollutant. According to our results, the developed MW-AC presents itself as a promising adsorbent candidate for the treatment of VOCs in various industrial applications.

BACKGROUND/AIM: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified as key regulators in various cancer types, including brain tumors. This study aimed to investigate the differential expression of miRNA-17 in glial tumors, cerebral metastases, and normal glial tissues. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 42 patients were included in this cross-sectional study. Tissue samples were obtained from patients with glial tumors or cerebral metastases and from normal glial tissues. miRNA-17 expression levels were computed by using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Receiver operating characteristics analysis was used to determine the predictive potential of miRNA-17. RESULTS: In this study, we demonstrated a statistically significant difference in miRNA-17 expression levels between glial tumors and the control group (p=0.001), with higher miRNA-17 expression observed in glial tumors. Similarly, there was statistically higher miRNA-17 expression in metastatic cases compared with the control group (p=0.007). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest miRNA-17 might be a potential biomarker for differentiating glial tumors and cerebral metastases from normal glial tissue, although further research is necessary to validate these findings and investigate the potential role of miRNA-17 in the pathogenesis of these brain tumors.

The genus Anaplasma includes A. marginale, A. centrale, A. bovis, A. ovis, A. platys, and A. phagocytophilum transmitted by ticks, some of which are zoonotic and cause anaplasmosis in humans and animals. In 2012, a new species was discovered in goats in China. In 2015, the same agent was detected in humans in China, and it was provisionally named Anaplasma capra, referring to 2012. The studies conducted to date have revealed the existence of A. capra in humans, domestic animals, wild animals, and ticks from three different continents (Asia, Europe, and Africa). Phylogenetic analyses based on gltA and groEL sequences show that A. capra clearly includes two different genotypes (A. capra genotype-1 and A. capra genotype-2). Although A. capra human isolates are in the genotype-2 group, goat, sheep, and cattle isolates are in both groups, making it difficult to establish a host genotype-relationship. According to current data, it can be thought that human isolates are genotype-2 and while only genotype-1 is found in Europe, both genotypes are found in Asia. Anaplasma capra causes clinical disease in humans, but the situation is not yet sufficient to understand the zoonotic importance and pathogenicity in animals. In the present review, the history, hosts (vertebrates and ticks), molecular prevalence, pathogenic properties, and genetic diversity of A. capra were evaluated from a broad perspective.

In this study, malachite green (MG) removal was performed with activated carbon synthesized from okra stalks by microwave assisted chemical activation method. In the synthesis of activated carbon, the effects of gas in the microwave, activation, and impregnation rate were investigated. The synthesized activated carbon characterization was investigated using BET, FT-IR, and SEM analyses. The activated carbon surface area achieved was 759.453 m2 g-1. In addition, the surface area of activated carbon synthesized using the conventional method was17.766 m2 g-1. The effect of the initial solution concentration on MG adsorption was investigated. According to the kinetic and equilibrium data, it was found that the adsorption process best fitted the pseudo-second order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm. According to the equilibrium data, the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of the monolayer was 119.05 mg g-1. In addition, MG adsorption was investigated by the experimental design method. The adsorption capacity at the determined optimum conditions was 99.63 mg g-1. All results show that activated carbon synthesized from waste biomass by combining the conventional method with microwave-assisted impregnation is a cheap and environmentally friendly adsorbent.


The synthesis of activated carbon from waste biomass using the conventional activation method is quite common. Activated carbon synthesis studies have increased in recent years with microwave-assisted impregnation, which has been integrated into the conventional activation method. Using this new method, the synthesis of activated carbon from okra stalk waste was carried out for the first time in this study. In addition, with this novel adsorbent, malachite green was removed from the aqueous solutions for the first time.

BACKGROUND: While there has been a wealth of reports concerning the acute effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), further information is needed to see how things unfold in the long run. This research aimed to ascertain whether the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the probability of thromboembolic events in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we scanned 952 AF patients and classified 643 eligible ones per their history of catching COVID-19. Two hundred thirty-nine of 643 patients had a history of COVID-19 (Group 1), and 404 did not (Group 2). We then compared two years of thromboembolic events between the groups. RESULTS: Composite thromboembolic outcomes were seen in 76 (11.8%) patients. Of those, 32 (13.4%) were in Group 1, and 44 (10.8%) were in Group 2 (p = .03). 10 of 32 patients (31%) in Group 1 and 11 of 44 (25%) in Group 2 died because of thromboembolic events (p = .02). Histories of diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and COVID-19 independently predicted thromboembolic events in AF patients. CONCLUSIONS: Having caught COVID-19 is likely to be associated with increased long-term thromboembolic outcomes in AF patients. Albeit the study design does not permit us to infer causality, our results question the necessity of more intensive anticoagulant therapy and closer follow-up in AF patients with past COVID-19.

OBJECTIVES: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) comprises most (70%-90%) of all pediatric head trauma cases seeking emergency care. Although most mTBI cases have normal initial head computed tomography scan, a considerable portion of the cases have intracranial imaging abnormalities on computed tomography scan. Whereas other intracranial pathological findings have been extensively studied, little is known about the clinical significance of pneumocephalus in pediatric mTBI. METHODS: We retrospectively identified pediatric mTBI patients with pneumocephalus using the institutional database of a large regional trauma referral center. Outcome measures were defined as clinically important TBI (ciTBI), hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and neurosurgical intervention. Comparisons were made between pneumocephalus and control (isolated linear fracture) groups as well as between isolated (only linear fracture and pneumocephalus) and nonisolated pneumocephalus (pneumocephalus and TBI) groups. RESULTS: Among 3524 pediatric mTBI cases, 43 cases had pneumocephalus (1.2%). Twenty-one cases (48.8%) had isolated pneumocephalus. The pneumocephalus group had higher rates of ciTBI, hospital admission, ICU admission, and neurosurgery when compared with the isolated linear fracture (control) group. The isolated pneumocephalus group had fewer ciTBI (21.1% vs 70%, P = 0.002), fewer hospitalization (23.8% vs 81.8%, P < 0.001), but similar ICU admission rates (4.8% vs 22.7%, P = 0.089) and length of hospital stay (4.0 ± 2.7 vs 3.6 ± 2.4 days, P = 0.798) in comparison to the nonisolated pneumocephalus group. None of the patients in the isolated group had neurosurgery whereas 2 patients in the nonisolated pneumocephalus group underwent surgery. Multivariable analysis revealed pneumocephalus as an independent predictor of ciTBI and hospital admission, but not ICU admission or neurosurgical intervention. CONCLUSION: Pneumocephalus is associated with increased rates of hospitalization and ciTBI, but not ICU admission, unfavorable outcome, or neurosurgical intervention in pediatric mTBI. Although usually spontaneously resolving pathology, it may occasionally be linked with complications such as cerebrospinal fluid leakage, meningitis, and tension pneumocephalus. Therefore, careful evaluation, close observation, and early detection of complications may prevent adverse outcomes.

Effective control of rare diseases requires health programs based on principles of protection and prevention. Carrier screening programs serve as preventive measures by identifying at-risk groups. This review examines the impact, implementation, advantages, and disadvantages of carrier screening, incorporating examples from ten countries: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Israel, China, Australia, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and Turkey. Data on carrier screening and related policies were collected from July to November 2022 and presented in a tabular format using a coding system devised by the authors. Variability was observed in the diseases/disorders and populations screened, screening expenses, and government provision across the countries. The number of diseases/disorders examined, ranging from 3 to 47, was determined by committee guidelines, government resources, pilot studies, and national institute resources. Notably, carrier screening programs exhibited greater worldwide inconsistency compared to newborn screening programs. The comparative analysis of developed countries serves to guide emerging nations. To address inequalities at both local and global levels, there is a need to enhance the establishment, development, and implementation of carrier screening programs. Furthermore, cost analyses of screening should be conducted, and adequate funding should be allocated to countries. In conclusion, this review highlights the preventive potential of carrier screening for rare diseases and emphasizes the importance of improving carrier screening programs globally to achieve equitable healthcare outcomes.

Tick-borne parasitic diseases cause mild to severe infections among vertebrate hosts, including dogs. Species in the genus Babesia are important tick-borne pathogens and have worldwide distributions. Although there are data on the prevalence and distribution of Babesia species among dogs around the world, there is no information available in Kyrgyzstan, according to a literature review. In this study, 337 dogs were screened by nested PCR for the presence of the 18S small subunit ribosomal RNA (18S SSU rRNA) gene of piroplasm species. Overall prevalence was 6.23% (21/337) for Babesia/Theileria spp. DNA sequencing of positively tested samples revealed that eighteen samples were infected with Babesia vogeli (B. vogeli) (5.34%), two samples with B. vulpes (0.59%), and one sample with Theileria ovis (T. ovis) (0.29%). The phylogenetic analyses and nucleotide sequences in contrast with those present in GenBank revealed that two nucleotide substitutions (594th and 627th) were found between B. vogeli isolates, including ours, indicating that the mutation is relatively rare. The sequences of other pathogens obtained in this study confirmed 100% nucleotide identity with B. vulpes and T. ovis sequences in GenBank. To the best of our knowledge, B. vogeli, B. vulpes, and T. ovis were detected for the first time in dogs from Kyrgyzstan, and it is thought that results will contribute to the understanding of the epidemiology of canine tick-borne pathogens in the country.

PURPOSE: To evaluate early changes in anterior segment parameters by Scheimpflug-Placido disc topography system and changes in retinal layers by optical coherence tomography in primary angle-closure suspects after laser peripheral iridotomy. METHODS: One eye of 26 patients with primary angle closure suspect and of 20 healthy subjects were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study. Anterior chamber depth/volume, iridocorneal angle and central corneal thickness were obtained by Scheimpflug-Placido disc topography system. Retinal thickness, retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness were acquired by optical coherence tomography. All the tests were repeated 1 week and 1 month after laser peripheral iridotomy. RESULTS: The mean ages of the patients and healthy controls were 64.8 ± 10.7 years and 64.5 ± 3.9 years, respectively (p = 0.990). Anterior chamber depth/volume and iridocorneal angle value were lower in the PACS group (p < 0.001, for all). Anterior chamber volume and iridocorneal angle increased significantly after laser peripheral iridotomy (p = 0.004, for both). While foveal thickness decreased significantly after laser peripheral iridotomy (p = 0.027), retinal nerve fiber layer thickness increased in superior and temporal quadrants (p = 0.038 and p = 0.016, respectively). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that LPI in patients with PACS provides improved retinal thickness and RNFL thickness, as well as anterior chamber parameters.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected people worldwide with varying clinical presentations ranging from mild to severe or fatal, and studies have found that age, gender, and some comorbidities can influence the severity of the disease. It would be valuable to have genetic markers that might help predict the likely outcome of infection. For this objective, genes encoding VEGFR-2 (rs1870377), CCR5Δ32 (rs333), and TLR3 (rs5743313) were analyzed for polymorphisms in the peripheral blood of 160 COVID-19 patients before COVID-19 vaccine was available in Türkiye. We observed that possession of the VEGFR-2 rs1870377 mutant allele increased the risk of severe/moderate disease in females and subjects ≥65 years of age, but was protective in males <65 years of age. Other significant results were that the CCR5Δ32 allele was protective against severe disease in subjects ≥65 years of age, while TLR3 rs5743313 polymorphism was found to be protective against severe/moderate illness in males <65 years of age. The VEGFR-2 rs1870377 mutant allele was a risk factor for severe/moderate disease, particularly in females over the age of 65. These findings suggest that genetic polymorphisms have an age- and sex-dependent influence on the severity of COVID-19, and the VEGFR-2 rs1870377 mutant allele could be a potential predictor of disease severity.

Rectal neuroendocrine carcinomas constitute <1% of all neuroendocrine carcinomas and <1% of all gastrointestinal tract malignancies. Cutaneous metastases of rectal neuroendocrine carcinoma are rarer than visceral metastases. We represent a 71-year-old man who was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumor grade 3 originating from the rectum 1 year ago. He was referred for 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography for restaging after 6 cycles of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Intensely increased 18F-FDG uptake in the right cutaneous inguinal region was consistent with neuroendocrine carcinoma metastasis with biopsy from the same region.

Neuroendocrine tumors are slow-growing tumors originating from neuroendocrine cells and capable of metastasis. Most of them are found in the gastrointestinal tract; however, they can also be rarely seen in other organs. Testicular neuroendocrine tumors account for less than 1% of all testicular neoplasms. They may present as primary testicular or secondary tumors from extratesticular sources. Jejunal neuroendocrine tumor metastasis to the testis is extremely rare. We present the case of a 61-year-old man with a jejunal neuroendocrine tumor and metastases to bilateral testicles revealed on Gallium-68-DOTATATE positron emission tomography/computed tomography.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum infects various hosts and lead to mild to severe infection. Currently, two A.phagocytophilum-related variants have been documented in different countries. Although limited, there are studies revealing the presence of A.phagocytophilum in water buffaloes, but no study investigating A.phagocytophilum-like 1 and -like 2. A.phagocytophilum and related variants were investigated using PCR, PCR-RFLP, and DNA sequence analysis in water buffaloes in Türkiye. 364 buffalo blood samples were examined for A.phagocytophilum and related strains. Seven buffaloes were determined to be positive with PCR and PCR-RFLP revealed that all samples were A.phagocytophilum-like 1. According to the partial sequence of 16 S rRNA gene, A.phagocytophilum like-1 may split into two different variants. This work supplies the first molecular report of A.phagocytophilum-like 1 in water buffaloes. However, a lack of information is present on the pathogen's clinical manifestations and vector species. There is still a need to investigate vectors and clinical signs of the pathogen.

In this study, the performance of activated carbon (AC) produced from defatted black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) by chemical activation with zinc chloride (ZnCl2) activator in photovoltaic application is evaluated. It is of great importance to increase the photovoltaic efficiency of cadmium sulfide (CdS)-based solar cells, which are widely used in photovoltaic applications, with AC support. The main purpose of the study is to determine how the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of undoped and Mo-doped AC supported CdS semiconductor materials changes in the presence of AC support material and to interpret the observed effect in the light of literature. For these reasons, in the study, AC supported CdS (CdS/AC) (5%, 10%, and 15% by weight) and Mo-doped CdS/AC semiconductor materials with different molybdenum (Mo) concentrations (0.33%, 1%, 3%) are produced by chemical precipitation method. Produced CdS/AC and Mo-doped CdS/AC semiconductor materials are characterized by IPCE, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Based on the result values, the optimum CdS concentration with the highest IPCE (%) value is determined as 10% (for CdS/AC). As a result of the experimental measurements, the optimum Mo concentration with the maximum IPCE (%) value is found as 1% (for Mo-doped CdS/AC). In particular, it is clear that an appreciable increase (from 4.70 to 39.00%) in IPCE (%) of 1% Mo-doped 10% CdS/AC semiconductor material is achieved when compared to pure CdS. Thus, the ability to increase the photovoltaic efficiency of CdS-based solar cells, which are widely used in photovoltaic applications, with AC support has been clearly demonstrated. This study presents a new strategy to increase the solar cell efficiency of semiconductor-based solar cell structures using biowaste-based AC supported CdS semiconductor materials.

The efficient adsorption application and electric double-layer capacitor material with low-cost biomass-based activated carbon materials have been quite common recently. In this study, chestnut shell-based activated carbons were produced by chemical activation. ZnCl2, H3PO4, and KOH agents were used for chemical activation. The obtained activated carbon, iodine adsorption from aqueous solutions, and its use as an electro capacitor were investigated. The scanning electron microscope, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used for characterization. The values of surface area and iodine adsorption capacity of the chestnut shell-based activated carbon are 1544 m2 g-1 and 1525 mg g-1. As a result, a specific capacitance of 97 Fg-1 with chestnut shell-based activated carbon was obtained in a 1 M KCl electrolyte for the electrochemical double-layer capacitor. This study shows that activated carbon based on the chestnut shell can be used both as an electrochemical energy storage material and as an adsorbent in iodine adsorption.

Hemoplasma species can cause infection varying from mild to severe in a wide range of hosts, including cattle and water buffalo. Two hemoplasma species, Mycoplasma wenyonii and Candidatus Mycoplasma haemobos, have been reported in cattle and water buffalo from different parts of the world to date. There was a lack of information on the presence and distribution of these pathogens in Turkey despite the negative economic impact on livestock production. This study aimed to develop a duplex PCR assay amplifying the 16S rRNA gene, in order to analyze DNA samples obtained from 297 cattle and 360 water buffaloes, and to determine the molecular prevalence of bovine hemoplasma species in Sivas province. Bovine hemoplasma species were found in 94 of 297 (31.64%) cattle and in 17 of 360 (4.72%) water buffaloes in this study. Randomly selected six positives PCR products (three samples each species) obtained from cattle and water buffaloes were sequenced, and the consensus sequences were uploaded to GenBank. Nucleotide similarity of 96.97-100% was determined between M. wenyonii isolates obtained in this study and those of M. wenyonii isolates present in the GenBank database, whereas C. Mycoplasma haemobos isolates from this study shared 99.04-100% homology with the C. Mycoplasma haemobos isolates uploaded to the GenBank. With the current study, the molecular presence of M. wenyonii and C. Mycoplasma haemobos were documented for the first time in cattle and water buffaloes in Turkey. Considering the rate of prevalence, veterinarians should take precautions against bovine hemoplasma species to protect animal health.

In the current study, copper oxide (CuO) and manganese oxide (MnO) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized through a simple, cost-efficient, and green method using watermelon seed shell extract as a stabilizing and reducing agent. The synthesized CuO and MnO NPs were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV). The particle sizes of CuO and MnO NPs were determined to be in the range of 15-97 and 6-51 nm, respectively, by TEM and XRD analysis. The photocatalytic performance of the CuO and MnO NPs used as catalysts were investigated for the photocatalytic reduction of methylene blue in an aqueous solution. In the photocatalytic reduction of methylene blue, sodium borohydride (NaBH4) was used as the reducing agent. The CuO and MnO NPs were capable to remove 96.58% (in 70 min) and 96.60% (in 140 min) of methylene blue from aqueous media, respectively. Besides, the kinetics of the photocatalytic reaction was investigated by a pseudo-first order model, and the reaction rate coefficient for methylene blue with CuO and MnO NPs were calculated as 0.0426 and 0.0235 min-1, respectively. The results demonstrated that the synthesized CuO and MnO NPs through the green method were promising catalysts to improve the photocatalytic reduction performance of methylene blue.
