BACKGROUND: Sympathetic activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis can ameliorate obesity and related metabolic abnormalities. However, crucial subtypes of the ß-adrenergic receptor (AR), as well as effects of its genetic variants on functions of BAT, remains unclear in humans. We conducted association analyses of genes encoding ß-ARs and BAT activity in human adults. METHODS: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ß1-, ß2-, and ß3-AR genes (ADRB1, ADRB2, and ADRB3) were tested for the association with BAT activity under mild cold exposure (19 °C, 2 h) in 399 healthy Japanese adults. BAT activity was measured using fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography and computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT). To validate the results, we assessed the effects of SNPs in the two independent populations comprising 277 healthy East Asian adults using near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy (NIRTRS) or infrared thermography (IRT). Effects of SNPs on physiological responses to intensive cold exposure were tested in 42 healthy Japanese adult males using an artificial climate chamber. RESULTS: We found a significant association between a functional SNP (rs1042718) in ADRB2 and BAT activity assessed with FDG-PET/CT (p < 0.001). This SNP also showed an association with cold-induced thermogenesis in the population subset. Furthermore, the association was replicated in the two other independent populations; BAT activity was evaluated by NIRTRS or IRT (p < 0.05). This SNP did not show associations with oxygen consumption and cold-induced thermogenesis under intensive cold exposure, suggesting the irrelevance of shivering thermogenesis. The SNPs of ADRB1 and ADRB3 were not associated with these BAT-related traits. CONCLUSIONS: The present study supports the importance of ß2-AR in the sympathetic regulation of BAT thermogenesis in humans. The present collection of DNA samples is the largest to which information on the donor's BAT activity has been assigned and can serve as a reference for further in-depth understanding of human BAT function.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is best known for thermogenesis. Rodent studies demonstrated that enhanced BAT thermogenesis is tightly associated with increased energy expenditure, reduced body weight, and improved glucose homeostasis. However, human BAT is protective against type 2 diabetes, independent of body weight. The mechanism underlying this dissociation remains unclear. Here, we report that impaired mitochondrial catabolism of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) in BAT, by deleting mitochondrial BCAA carriers (MBCs), caused systemic insulin resistance without affecting energy expenditure and body weight. Brown adipocytes catabolized BCAA in the mitochondria as nitrogen donors for the biosynthesis of non-essential amino acids and glutathione. Impaired mitochondrial BCAA-nitrogen flux in BAT resulted in increased oxidative stress, decreased hepatic insulin signaling, and decreased circulating BCAA-derived metabolites. A high-fat diet attenuated BCAA-nitrogen flux and metabolite synthesis in BAT, whereas cold-activated BAT enhanced the synthesis. This work uncovers a metabolite-mediated pathway through which BAT controls metabolic health beyond thermogenesis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Clinicians sometimes encounter papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PMC) that is less than 10 mm, associated with lymph node metastasis. In this study, we assessed PMC clinicopathologically to clarify risk factors for poor prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-one patients who underwent thyroid surgery at Aichi Medical University from September 2009 to October 2016 were included. Patients were divided into two groups, pEX-positive (23 patients) and pEX-negative (28 patients), based on the pathological finding of thyroid capsule invasion. The former indicates that the tumor infiltrated the thyroid capsule and spread to the neighboring tissue, and the latter indicates no capsule invasion. We analyzed factors such as patient characteristics, pathological findings, and serum levels of thyroid hormones in the two groups. RESULTS: No statistical differences were observed between the two groups in gender distribution or age at surgery. Preoperative cancer diagnoses were established for more patients in the pEX-positive group than in the pEX-negative group (n = 21 and 14, respectively; P = 0.004). The mean (±SD) pathological tumor diameter was 5.42 ± 2.77 in the pEX-negative group and 8.32 ± 1.61 in the pEX-positive group (P < 0.001). No significant differences in preoperative serum levels of free T3, free T4, thyroid-stimulating hormone, or thyroglobulin were observed between the two groups. The odds ratio for node positivity in tumors invading thyroid capsules (pEX-positive) compared to those with no capsule invasion (pEX-negative) was 13.20 (95% confidence interval, 3.45-50.42). Immunohistological staining for phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted from chromosome 10 (PTEN) and Akt (protein kinase B) revealed the facilitation of PTEN and suppression of Akt, which might indicate downregulation of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase-Akt (PI3K-Akt) cascade. DISCUSSION: In general, the prognosis of PMC is favorable. However, the prognosis is less favorable in patients with nodal metastasis or extrathyroidal invasion. It is controversial whether resection is required for proven PMCs. For PMCs associated with extrathyroidal invasion, regional lymph node resection with lobectomy should be performed due to the high risk for lymphatic spread. There might be a possibility that the natural progression of PMC seems to be controlled by the facilitation of PTEN. However, a tumor in the lateral peripheral region of the thyroid parenchyma might be associated with capsule invasion followed by lymphatic spread.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate genetic alterations within breast cancer in the setting of recurrent or de novo stage IV disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included 22 patients with recurrent breast cancer (n = 19) and inoperable de novo stage IV breast cancer (n = 3). For next generation sequencing, FoundationOneCDx (F1CDx) (Foundation Medicine Inc., Cambridge, MA, USA) was performed in 21 patients and FoundationOneLiquid CDx was performed in 1 patient. RESULTS: Median age was 62.9 years (range, 33.4-82.1). Pathological diagnoses of specimens included invasive ductal carcinoma (n = 19), invasive lobular carcinoma (n = 2), and invasive micropapillary carcinoma (n = 1). F1CDx detected a median of 4.5 variants (range, 1-11). The most commonly altered gene were PIK3CA (n = 9), followed by TP53 (n = 7), MYC (n = 4), PTEN (n = 3), and CDH1 (n = 3). For hormone receptor-positive patients with PIK3CA mutations, hormonal treatment plus a phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitor was recommended as the treatment of choice. Patients in the hormone receptor-negative and no human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 expression group had significantly higher tumor mutational burden than patients in the hormone receptor-positive group. A BRCA2 reversion mutation was revealed by F1CDx in a patient with a deleterious germline BRCA2 mutation during poly ADP ribose polymerase inhibitor treatment. CONCLUSION: Guidance on tailored precision therapy with consideration of genomic mutations was possible for some patients with information provided by F1CDx. Clinicians should consider using F1CDx at turning points in the course of the disease.

BRCA1 and 2 mutations are known to be associated with breast cancer, and olaparib, a poly (adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor, has been shown to be effective in cells carrying these mutations in some studies. Erythema nodosum (EN), which is one adverse event of olaparib and is discussed in this paper, is considered to be a very rare condition. A 69-year-old female patient underwent left breast conservative surgery with axillary lymph node dissection for left invasive ductal breast cancer (stage IIB). Her family history included a sister who developed ovarian cancer at age 63. Five years postoperatively, systemic metastases were discovered in the lung, bone, hilar, and poststernal lymph nodes. The surgically removed metastatic lung nodule was diagnosed as an estrogen receptor (ER)-positive, progesterone receptor (PgR)-negative, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative metastatic adenocarcinoma of breast cancer origin. And germline mutations of BRCA1/2 were assessed using BRACAnalysis CDx® (Myriad Genetics, Salt Lake City, UT, USA), and BRCA2 1241 delC was identified as a deleterious mutation. Oral administration of olaparib was started. On day 4 of this treatment, numerous erythematous plaques characterized by intense tenderness and infiltration appeared on the extensor surfaces of the bilateral lower legs. On the basis of the clinical findings, the lesions were diagnosed as EN. Oral prednisolone was started at the same time as olaparib discontinuation, and the EN lesions disappeared in one week. EN is an inflammatory lesion characterized by tender subcutaneous induration with a flushed surface, predominantly on the bilateral lower legs. EN occurring after olaparib administration is considered to be very rare. This article describes such a case and reviews the relevant literature.

BACKGROUND Ventriculoperitoneal shunts are commonly used in neurosurgery for the treatment of hydrocephalus. This case report details an unusual instance where breast cancer developed along the pathway of an existing ventriculoperitoneal shunt. CASE REPORT An 86-year-old woman, who previously underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement for normal-pressure hydrocephalus, visited our hospital upon detecting a mass in her left breast. The physical examination discovered an irregular mass located at the 9 o'clock position of the left breast. Subsequent breast ultrasonography identified a 36 mm mass with indistinct borders, rough margins, and signs of skin infiltration. Invasive ductal carcinoma of a triple-negative subtype was diagnosed through a core-needle biopsy. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography indicated the ventriculoperitoneal shunt's pathway, running from the left ventricle, passing through the center of the breast mass, and leading into the abdominal cavity. Fears of shunt occlusion and potential infection due to the untreated breast cancer prompted surgical intervention after consultation with the neurosurgeon. The surgery involved rerouting the ventriculoperitoneal shunt from the left thoracoabdomen to the right, performing a left mastectomy, and removing the fistula in the abdominal wall to minimize the risk of cancer recurrence along the shunt pathway. Postoperative histopathological examination confirmed the initial diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma of a triple-negative subtype, with no malignancy detected in the removed abdominal wall fistula. CONCLUSIONS Taking into account prior cases of cancer metastasizing distantly due to ventriculoperitoneal shunts, our case emphasizes the necessity to consider additional preventative measures against cancer seeding. This approach is particularly significant when treating breast cancer that arises along the pathway of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt, apart from performing conventional breast cancer surgery.

BACKGROUND: Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) sometimes presents with unique clinical, pathologic, and radiographic features. In this case report, we describe a patient with ILC, whose initial presentation consisted with symptoms secondary to bone-marrow dissemination. In addition, the breast primary was revealed only by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) followed by real-time virtual sonography (RVS). CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old woman presented to our outpatient clinic with dyspnea on exertion. She had severe anemia (hemoglobin, 5.3 g/dL) and thrombocytopenia (platelet count, 31 × 103/mL). Bone-marrow biopsy was performed to evaluate hematopoietic function. The pathologic diagnosis was bone-marrow carcinomatosis due to metastatic breast cancer. Initial mammography followed by ultrasonography (US) failed to detect the primary tumor. On MRI, a non-mass-enhancement lesion was observed. While second-look US also did not detect the lesion, it was clearly visualized with RVS. We were finally able to biopsy the breast lesion. The pathologic diagnosis was ILC positive for both estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor, with 1 + immunohistochemical staining for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2. This case of ILC was characterized by bone-marrow metastasis. Due to decreased cell adhesion, the risk of bone-marrow metastasis is higher in ILC than in invasive ductal carcinoma, the most prevalent type of breast cancer. Biopsy of the primary lesion, which was initially only detected with MRI, was successfully performed with clear visualization during RVS, which is based on the fusion of MRI and US images. CONCLUSION: In this case report and literature review, we describe the unique clinical characteristics of ILC and a strategy for identifying primary lesions that are initially only visualized with MRI.

The high thermogenic activity of brown adipose tissue (BAT) has received considerable attention. Here, we demonstrated the role of the mevalonate (MVA) biosynthesis pathway in the regulation of brown adipocyte development and survival. The inhibition of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR), the rate-limiting enzyme in the MVA pathway and the molecular target of statins, suppressed brown adipocyte differentiation by suppressing protein geranylgeranylation-mediated mitotic clonal expansion. The development of BAT in neonatal mice exposed to statins during the fetal period was severely impaired. Moreover, statin-induced geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate (GGPP) deficiency led to the apoptosis of mature brown adipocytes. Brown adipocyte-specific Hmgcr knockout induced BAT atrophy and disrupted thermogenesis. Importantly, both genetic and pharmacological inhibition of HMGCR in adult mice induced morphological changes in BAT accompanied by an increase in apoptosis, and statin-treated diabetic mice showed worsened hyperglycemia. These findings revealed that MVA pathway-generated GGPP is indispensable for BAT development and survival.

In mammals including humans, there are two types of adipose tissue, white and brown adipose tissues (BATs). White adipose tissue is the primary site of energy storage, while BAT is a specialized tissue for non-shivering thermogenesis to dissipate energy as heat. Although BAT research has long been limited mostly in small rodents, the rediscovery of metabolically active BAT in adult humans has dramatically promoted the translational studies on BAT in health and diseases. It is now established that BAT, through its thermogenic and energy dissipating activities, plays a role in the regulation of body temperature, whole-body energy expenditure, and body fatness. Moreover, increasing evidence has demonstrated that BAT secretes various paracrine and endocrine factors, which influence other peripheral tissues and control systemic metabolic homeostasis, suggesting BAT as a metabolic regulator, other than for thermogenesis. In fact, clinical studies have revealed an association of BAT not only with metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and fatty liver, but also with cardiovascular diseases including hypertension and atherosclerosis. Thus, BAT is an intriguing tissue combating obesity and related metabolic diseases. In this review, we summarize current knowledge on human BAT, focusing its patho-physiological roles in energy homeostasis, obesity and related metabolic disorders. The effects of aging and sex on BAT are also discussed.

In Japan, pharmacists have begun working in emergency departments (ED) over the last decade. However, no reports exist on the contribution of pharmacists' activities in the ED to patient safety. We investigated whether pharmacists' long-term duties influence the number of incident reports in the ED. Of the 862 incidents reported, 152 (17.6%) were drug-related reports. Further investigations revealed that 42 cases occurred during pharmacists' usual working hours, four cases (9.5%) occurred when a pharmacist was present in the ED, and 38 cases (90.5%) occurred in the absence of a pharmacist in the ED. The number of incident reports was significantly reduced by pharmacists optimizing pharmacotherapy in the ED (p=0.002). There was a decrease in the degree of impact on patients through pharmacist duties compared to pharmacist absence (intercepting errors prior to patient administration: 4.8 vs. 31%; medication misadministration: 4.8 vs. 59.4%). Medical staff-associated factors and time of patient arrival at the ED did not have a significant impact on incident reports for any time. Long-term pharmacist duties in the ED can reduce the number of incident reports and contribute to safe medication care in the ED.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis guided vacuum-assisted biopsy (DBT-VAB) for microcalcifications in the breast. METHODS: Retrospective review of 131 mammography-guided VABs at our institution were performed. All of the targets were calcification lesion suspicious for cancer. 45 consecutive stereotactic vacuum-assisted biopsies (ST-VABs) and 86 consecutive DBT-VABs were compared. Written informed consent was obtained. Tissue sampling methods and materials were the same with both systems. Student's t-test was used to compare procedure time and the Fisher's exact test was used to compare success rate, complications, and histopathologic findings for the 2 methods. RESULTS: The tissue sampling success rate was 95.6% for ST-VAB (43/45) and 97.7% (84/86) for DBT-VAB. Time for positioning (10.6 ± 6.4 vs. 6.7 ± 5.3 min), time for biopsy (33.4 ± 13.1 vs. 22.5 ± 13.1 min), and overall procedure time (66.6 ± 16.6 min vs. 54.5 ± 13.0 min) were substantially shorter with DBT-VAB (P < 0.0001). There were no differences in the distribution of pathological findings between the 2 groups. CONCLUSION: Depth information and stable visibility of the target provided by DBT images led to quick decisions about target coordinates and improved the clinical performance of microcalcification biopsies.

BACKGROUND: Dual ectopic thyroid, a very rare condition, is defined as the simultaneous presence of ectopic thyroid tissue in two abnormal locations. Here, we report the surgical management of a patient with dual ectopic thyroid. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 12-year-old boy with right para-midline swelling for 2 months. On physical examination of the upper anterior neck, there was a 4 cm × 3 cm mass that was soft, mobile, smooth, and painless. Blood examination showed euthyroidism. Neck ultrasonography showed a well-circumscribed multilocular cyst. We followed up by observation only because the patient had no local symptoms or malignancy. After 2 years, the mass gradually enlarged, so we performed surgery to improve cosmetic outcomes. Preoperative neck CT revealed both a high-density solid mass at the base of the tongue and a central low-density region surrounded by a high-density area at the pretracheal region below the hyoid. The infrahyoid mass was surgically removed, and the sublingual mass was left intact. Pathological findings showed the growth of multiple-size follicles, leading to a diagnosis of adenomatous goiter. Postoperative 123-I scintigraphy showed radioactive iodine uptake in the sublingual lesion, but none in the normal thyroid bed despite the extirpation of thyroid tissue. Postoperative thyroid hormone replacement was started for subclinical hypothyroidism. One year postoperatively, the patient became euthyroid. CONCLUSION: Surgical excision was used to manage a symptomatic cervical infrahyoid mass related to dual ectopic thyroid. Postoperatively, thyroid hormone replacement was required both to prevent enlargement of the remaining sublingual thyroid and to maintain adequate thyroid hormone levels.

The increase of whole-body energy expenditure seen after a single meal ingestion, referred to as diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT), substantially varies depending on the meal's macronutrient composition. Brown adipose tissue (BAT), a site of non-shivering thermogenesis, was reported to be involved in DIT. To examine the effects of meal composition on BAT-associated DIT in humans, healthy male participants underwent fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography to assess BAT activity, and respiratory gas analysis for 2 h after ingestion of a carbohydrate-, protein-, or fat-rich meal (C-meal, P-meal, and F-meal, respectively). The calculated DIT at 2 h was 6.44 ± 2.01%, 3.49 ± 2.00%, and 2.32 ± 0.90% of the ingested energy after the P-meal, C-meal, and F-meal, respectively. The DIT after C-meal ingestion correlated positively with BAT activity (P = 0.011), and was approximately twice greater in the group with high-BAT activity than in the group with low-BAT activity (4.35 ± 1.74% vs. 2.12 ± 1.76%, P < 0.035). Conversely, the DIT after F-meal or P-meal ingestion did not correlate with BAT activity, with no difference between the two groups. Thus, BAT has a significant role in DIT after ingestion of a carbohydrate-rich meal, but hardly after ingestion either protein- or fat-rich meal.

Temporal and spatio-temporal niche partitioning is an important strategy for carnivore coexistence. Camera-trap data has been analyzed through several methods to assess the temporal and spatio-temporal niche partitioning. However, different analytical approaches used to may evaluate niche partitioning detect different results. In this study, we evaluated the temporal or spatio-temporal partitioning among sympatric medium-sized carnivores, red foxes, raccoon dogs, and Japanese martens, based on three analytical methods-the temporal overlap, temporal co-occurrence, and time-to-encounter analysis-to evaluate. From May to October 2019 and 2020, we obtained the activity of the target species using camera-traps in northeastern Japan. We analyzed the data with the coefficient of temporal overlap, probabilistic co-occurrence analysis, checkerboard score, and multi-response permutation procedures. The results of the assessment of the niche partitioning differed depending on the analytical methods based on temporal and spatio-temporal partitioning. Therefore, we conclude that the choice of analytical approach is important for evaluating the temporal and spatio-temporal niche partitioning.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) activate uncoupler protein 1 (UCP1) in brown adipose tissue (BAT) under physiological cold exposure and noradrenaline (NA) stimulation to increase thermogenesis. However, the endogenous regulator of ROS in activated BAT and its role in pathological conditions remain unclear. We show that serum levels of selenoprotein P (SeP; encoded by SELENOP) negatively correlate with BAT activity in humans. Physiological cold exposure downregulates Selenop in BAT. Selenop knockout mice show higher rectal temperatures and UCP1 sulfenylation during cold exposure. SeP treatment to brown adipocytes eliminated the NA-induced mitochondrial ROS by upregulating glutathione peroxidase 4 and impaired cellular thermogenesis. A high-fat/high-sucrose diet elevates serum SeP levels and diminishes the elevated NA-induced thermogenesis in BAT-Selenop KO mice. Therefore, SeP is the intrinsic factor inducing reductive stress that impairs thermogenesis in BAT and may be a potential therapeutic target for obesity and diabetes.

BACKGROUND: There have been no reports of tracheal intubation for airway obstruction after acute thyroid swelling following fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of the thyroid gland. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old woman with a 22 mm × 13 mm right hypervascular thyroid nodule underwent FNA once with a 22G needle under ultrasonographic guidance. Shortly after the aspiration, ultrasound revealed hypoechoic swelling with a crack-like pattern. The patient was observed under bed rest in the Fowler position and received intravenous steroids. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed swelling not only of the thyroid but also of the retropharyngeal space, and the patient complained of difficulty swallowing saliva. Laryngeal fiberscopy revealed protrusion of the posterior pharyngeal wall, edematous changes in the mucosa of the pharynx and epiglottis, and retention of saliva. The patient was intubated awake and hydrocortisone was administered every 8 h. She was extubated 3 days after FNA and discharged without any complications. CONCLUSIONS: When neck swelling is noticed after FNA, ultrasonographic findings are especially important to assess potential causes. If airway obstruction is suspected, CT findings and fiberscope observation of the pharynx provide particularly useful information.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to verify the utility of second-look ultrasound (US) using real-time virtual sonography (RVS), a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/US fusion technique, in identifying MRI-detected breast lesions with non-mass enhancement (NME). METHODS: Consecutive patients who had one or more NME lesions detected by MRI yet occult on the subsequent second-look US in conventional B (cB)-mode imaging were enrolled in the study between June 2015 and April 2020. Supine MRI of the lesions was performed and, using its data, second-look US using RVS was performed. RESULTS: Twenty patients with 21 NME lesions were included. The overall median lesion size on prone MRI was 23 mm (range, 5-63 mm). Supine MRI identified all the 21 NME lesions, and second-look US using RVS successfully detected 18 (86%) of them. RVS-guided biopsy was performed for histopathological evaluation, showing that nine of the 18 lesions were benign and the other nine malignant. Of the nine malignant lesions, two (22%) were invasive cancer and seven (78%) were ductal carcinoma in situ. In four of five patients who underwent prone MRI for preoperative evaluation, the diagnosis was benign and surgery was conducted as originally planned. In the other patient, the diagnosis was malignant and contralateral breast-conserving surgery was added. Three (14%) of the 21 NME lesions had no RVS correlates and were judged to be benign after 24-month follow-up. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that second-look US using RVS helps identify MRI-detected NME lesions that are occult on cB-mode second-look US.

The gut microbiome has emerged as a key regulator of obesity; however, its role in brown adipose tissue (BAT) metabolism and association with obesity remain to be elucidated. We found that the levels of circulating branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) and their cognate α-ketoacids (BCKA) were significantly correlated with the body weight in humans and mice and that BCAA catabolic defects in BAT were associated with obesity in diet-induced obesity (DIO) mice. Pharmacological systemic enhancement of BCAA catabolic activity reduced plasma BCAA and BCKA levels and protected against obesity; these effects were reduced in BATectomized mice. DIO mice gavaged with Bacteroides dorei and Bacteroides vulgatus exhibited improved BAT BCAA catabolism and attenuated body weight gain, which were not observed in BATectomized DIO mice. Our data have highlighted a possible link between the gut microbiota and BAT BCAA catabolism and suggest that Bacteroides probiotics could be used for treating obesity.

We visualized a dynamic process of fatty acid uptake of brown adipocytes using a time-lapse ultra-broadband multiplex coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectroscopic imaging system with an onstage incubator. Combined with the deuterium labeling technique, the intracellular uptake of saturated fatty acids was traced up to 9 h, a substantial advance over the initial multiplex CARS system, with an analysis time of 80 min. Characteristic metabolic activities of brown adipocytes, such as resistance to lipid saturation, were elucidated, supporting the utility of the newly developed system.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies revealed that green spaces in urban areas are critical for conservation of native biodiversity and that assessment of the present flora of green spaces in urban areas is critical for protection of the native biodiversity. The Komaba Campus of the University of Tokyo embraces a relevant green area, located in a highly urbanised area in Tokyo Metropolis (35.66 N 139.68 E, Japan). The total area of this Campus is 25.4 ha, from which, 4.5 ha are covered by vegetation. Although intense urbanisation can be observed around the Campus, new insect species had been reported for the Campus area, suggesting that the biodiversity on the Campus still demands some attention. Differently from fauna surveys, no flora survey has been done for more than 30 years on the Campus. In this study, we have extensively surveyed the plants diversity on the Komaba Campus of the University of Tokyo, aiming for an update of the plants list on this green urban area in Tokyo. NEW INFORMATION: The survey covered all herbaceous and arboreous plants growing wild on the Campus. Garden plants were excluded in this survey because these plants were supposed to be cultivated. The final dataset contained, in total, 324 taxa, from which 234 were herbaceous plants and 90 were arboreous plants. The top three taxa are as follows: Poaceae (38 taxa), Asteraceae (34 taxa) and Rosaceae (14 taxa), respectively. This is the first update to the Flora of the Komaba Campus of the University of Tokyo in 30 years and represent an important contribution to conservation of native species in the Tokyo metropolis.
