RESUMO

α,α-trehalose is a well-known sugar that plays a key role in establishing tolerance to environmental stresses in many organisms, except unicellular eukaryotes. However, almost nothing is known about α,ß-trehalose, including their synthesis, function, and even presence in living organisms. In this study, we identified α,ß-trehalose in the resting cyst, a dormancy cell form characterized by extreme tolerance to environmental stresses, of the ciliated protist Colpoda cucullus, using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and a proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). Gene expression analysis revealed that the expression of trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS), glycosyltransferase (GT), alpha-amylase (AMY), and trehalose transporter 1 (TRET1), were up-regulated in encystment, while the expression of α-glucosidase 2 (AG2) and trehalase (TREH) was up-regulated in excystment. These results suggest that α,ß-trehalose is synthesized during encystment process, while and contributes to extreme tolerances to environmental stressors, stored carbohydrates, and energy reserve during resting cyst and/or during excystment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: Sacubitril/valsartan (SV), a novel pharmacological class of angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitors, is effective in treating heart failure (HF) by inhibiting the degradation of natriuretic peptides and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. However, no studies have observed the long-term effects of SV on patients with HF and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) undergoing hemodialysis (HD) over a long period. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This single-center retrospective study of 21 months duration involved consecutive patients with HF and preserved LVEF undergoing HD, who received 50-200 mg/day. All patients were followed up regularly, and clinical, biochemical, and echocardiographic parameters were recorded at baseline and during follow-up. The efficacy and safety of SV were also analyzed. RESULTS: This longitudinal study included nine patients, with a median age of 76 years. The median HD duration was 7 years. At baseline, the mean brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) was 133±73.6 pg/ml and that of LVEF was 66%±9%. After SV therapy, the systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate decreased, albeit without statistical significance. BNP levels, LVEF, left atrial anteroposterior dimension, and left ventricular mass index did not change, compared to baseline values. No adverse effects were observed in any of the patients. CONCLUSION: SV tended to decrease blood pressure and heart rate in patients with HF and preserved LVEF undergoing HD but did not alter cardiac function assessments, such as BNP or echocardiography.

RESUMO

Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST), the most mature phase-change materials (PCM), functions as a recoding layer in nonvolatile memory and optical discs by contrasting the physical properties upon phase transition between amorphous and crystalline phases. However, GST faces challenges such as a large extinction coefficient (k) and low thermal stability of the amorphous phase. In this study, we introduce RuSbTe as a new PCM to address the GST concerns. Notably, the crystallization temperature of the amorphous RuSbTe is approximately 350 °C, significantly higher than GST. A one-order-of-magnitude increase in the resistivity contrast was observed upon phase transition. The crystalline (0.35-0.50 eV) and amorphous (0.26-0.37 eV) phases exhibit relatively small band gap values, resulting in substantial k. Although RuSbTe demonstrates a k difference of approximately 1 upon crystallization at the telecommunications C-band, the refractive index (n) difference is negligible. Unlike GST, which induces both phase retardation and amplitude modulation in its optical switch device, RuSbTe exhibits amplitude-only modulation. This study suggests that RuSbTe has the potential to enable new photonic computing devices that can independently control the phase and amplitude. Combining RuSbTe with phase-only modulators could open avenues for advanced applications.

RESUMO

The burgeoning field of optoelectronic devices necessitates a mechanism that gives rise to a large contrast in the electrical and optical properties. A SmTe film with a NaCl-type structure demonstrates significant differences in resistivity (over 105) and band gap (approximately 1.45 eV) between as-deposited and annealed films, even in the absence of a structural transition. The change in the electronic structure and accompanying physical properties is attributed to a rigid-band shift triggered by a valence transition (VT) between Sm2+ and Sm3+. The stress field within the SmTe film appears closely tied to the mixed valence state of Sm, suggesting that stress is a driving force in this VT. By mixing the valence states, the formation energy of the low-resistive state decreases, providing nonvolatility. Moreover, the valence state of Sm can be regulated through annealing and device-operation processes, such as applying voltage and current pulses. This investigation introduces an approach to developing semiconductor materials for optoelectrical applications.

RESUMO

BackgroundLittle information is available on the role of community-based rehabilitation after a nuclear disaster. Here, we report the case of an older couple living in an area repopulated after the Fukushima nuclear disaster of 2011 who received outpatient rehabilitation.Case presentationAn 84-year-old woman underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) after she fell and sustained a trochanteric fracture while caring for her husband with Alzheimer's disease. The 85-year-old husband experienced worsening behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) following his wife's hospitalization. The couple received rehabilitation at an outpatient facility in a nearby village using a shuttle service. The woman's postoperative anxiety was relieved and her physical function improved. Moreover, the husband's BPSD symptoms decreased.ConclusionA wife and husband showed improvement in physical function after THA and alleviation of BPSD, respectively, following rehabilitation. In post-disaster, resource-scarce areas, older adults may benefit from utilizing the outpatient rehabilitation services available in the surrounding area.

RESUMO

We present a sessile droplet manipulation platform that enables the formation and transport of a droplet on a light-absorbing surface via local laser-beam irradiation. The mechanism relies on solutocapillary Marangoni flow arising from a concentration gradient in a binary mixture liquid. Because the mixture is strongly confined in a two-dimensional slit with a spacing of a few micrometers, the wetting film is stably sustained, enabling the rapid formation, deformation, and transport of a sessile droplet. In addition, to sustain the droplet in the absence of laser irradiation, we developed a method to bridge the droplet between the top and bottom walls of the slit. The bridge is stably sustained because of the hydrophilicity of the slit wall. Splitting and merging of the droplet bridges are also demonstrated.

RESUMO

2D van der Waals (vdW) transition metal di-chalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered significant attention in the nonvolatile memory field for their tunable electrical properties, scalability, and potential for phase engineering. However, their complex switching mechanism and complicated fabrication methods pose challenges for mass production. Sputtering is a promising technique for large-area 2D vdW TMD fabrication, but the high melting point (typically Tm > 1000 °C) of TMDs requires elevated temperatures for good crystallinity. This study focuses on the low-Tm 2D vdW TM tetra-chalcogenides and identifies NbTe4 as a promising candidate with an ultra-low Tm of around 447 °C (onset temperature). As-grown NbTe4 forms an amorphous phase upon deposition that can be crystallized by annealing at temperatures above 272 °C. The simultaneous presence of a low Tm and a high crystallization temperature Tc can resolve important issues facing current phase-change memory compounds, such as high Reset energies and poor thermal stability of the amorphous phase. Therefore, NbTe4 holds great promise as a potential solution to these issues.

RESUMO

Here we report on the growth of thin crystalline films of the metastable phase GeTe2. Direct observation by transmission electron microscopy revealed a Te-Ge-Te stacking with van der Waals gaps. Moreover, electrical and optical measurements revealed the films exhibted semiconducting properties commensurate with electronics applications. Feasibility studies in which device structures were fabricated demonstrated the potential application of GeTe2 as an electronic material.

RESUMO

Indirect interactions via shared memory deposited on the field ("field memory") play an essential role in collective motions. Some motile species, such as ants and bacteria, use attractive pheromones to complete many tasks. Mimicking these kinds of collective behavior at the laboratory scale, we present a pheromone-based autonomous agent system with tunable interactions. In this system, colloidal particles leave phase-change trails reminiscent of the process of pheromone deposition by individual ants, and the trails attract other particles and themselves. To implement this, we combine two physical phenomena: the phase change of a Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) substrate by self-propelled Janus particles (pheromone deposition) and the AC (alternating current) electroosmotic (ACEO) flow generated by this phase change (pheromone attraction). Laser irradiation causes the GST layer to crystalize locally beneath the Janus particles, owing to the lens heating effect. Under AC field application, the high conductivity of the crystalline trail causes a field concentration and generates ACEO flow, and we introduce this flow as an attractive interaction between the Janus particles and the crystalline trail. By changing the AC frequency and voltage, we can tune the attractive flow, i.e., the sensitivity of the Janus particles to the trail, and the isolated particles undergo diverse states of motion, from self-caging to directional motion. A swarm of Janus particles also shows different states of collective motion, including colony formation and line formation. This tunability enables a reconfigurable system driven by a pheromone-like memory field.

RESUMO

Following the evacuation of areas affected by Japan's 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, Kawauchi Village was one of the first municipalities repopulated. Although rehabilitation resources were limited, a healthcare facility near the municipality initiated home-visit rehabilitation in 2016. To the best of our knowledge, reports of home-visit rehabilitation in repopulated villages that were evacuated following a nuclear accident are lacking. This article describes a case study of home-visit rehabilitation in Kawauchi Village. The purpose of this study was to explore how users of home-visit rehabilitation services in Kawauchi Village perceive home-visit rehabilitation, and whether it had a positive impact on their daily life. A questionnaire survey was conducted, and their ability to perform activities of daily living was assessed, to understand the living conditions of the visiting-rehabilitation service users. We studied 10 rehabilitation-service users, with a mean age of 86.8 years, who had used the services for an average of 591.4 days. Themes that emerged from the open-ended questionnaire were "established exercise habits and improved physical functions," "the joy of returning to the village," "challenges in the mountainous areas" and "changes in relationships due to the earthquake or evacuation."In conclusion, home-visit rehabilitation was successfully implemented in the repopulated village, and helped maintain the users' physical functions. This may thus be a viable choice for rehabilitation care in repopulated areas after disasters.

RESUMO

This paper examines the effect of pandemic vaccination on asset prices in a simple asset pricing model à la Lucas 1978. In this model, asset prices depend on susceptible individuals' saving motives to insure against a reduction in labour income due to getting they get the virus. Hence distributing vaccine reduces precautionary saving motives and asset prices. This implies that reducing the income gap between susceptible and infected individuals, such as by cash handouts, eases the negative effect of vaccine supply on asset prices.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To elucidate the noninferiority of ab interno microhook trabeculotomy (µTLO) using a recently developed reusable stainless spatula-type microhook device to incise the trabecular meshwork to Trabectome (Neomeix, Inc) surgery in terms of the 1-year postoperative outcomes of Japanese patients with glaucoma by means of propensity score analyses. DESIGN: Multicenter, retrospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: We enrolled 553 and 392 patients who underwent Trabectome surgery and µTLO, respectively, between January 2014 and March 2020 at 10 facilities. METHODS: Logistic regression analysis was conducted to calculate the propensity score, which indicates the likelihood of treatment assignment (Trabectome or µTLO). We set the following factors as outcome-related covariates: age, sex, facility, glaucoma disease types, preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP), glaucoma drug score, mean deviation of Humphrey visual field test results, antithrombotic drug use, the presence or absence of combined cataract surgery, and incision range of the trabecular meshwork (1 or 2 quadrants). We analyzed 4 different methods (matching, inverse probability of treatment weighting [IPTW], stratification, and regression adjustment) using the propensity score. We set 15% as the noninferiority margin based on previous Trabectome meta-analysis results. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was surgical success at 1 year after surgery. We defined surgical success as satisfying all 3 criteria: (1) IOP within 5 to 21 mmHg, (2) IOP reduction of 20% or more from preoperative IOP, and (3) no additional glaucoma surgery. RESULTS: The 95% confidence interval of risk difference of surgical failure in µTLO in reference to Trabectome surgery was -12.1% to +9.5% in matching, -12.7% to +11.1% in IPTW, -12.2 to +7.0 in stratification, and -9.7% to +8.1% in regression adjustment, all of which fell within the predetermined noninferiority margin of 15%. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical success of µTLO at 1 year after was not inferior to that of Trabectome surgery.

RESUMO

The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and consequent Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident caused a large-scale evacuation, generating various health issues. Although residents gradually returned, their independence of daily living and associated factors remain unknown. This study examines the hypothesis that physical and mental status are associated with the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) of older returnees (65 years and above) after the disaster. Older returnees to Kawauchi Village, Fukushima Prefecture, located 20-30 km southwest of the power plants, were recruited. IADL was assessed using the Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence, physical function via the 30-s chair stand test, and mental health via the Japanese version of the World Health Organization Five Well-Being Index. To examine the association of IADL and possible factors, a t-test or Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient was used, stratified by sex. The data of 29 participants (75.5 ± 7.4 years, 19 female) were analyzed. Physical function was associated with IADL in females. Mental health was associated with IADL in males and females. Taking measures to strengthen physical function in females, as well as to improve mental health in both sexes, for enhancing IADL ability could be beneficial.

RESUMO

This paper examines the implications of lockdown policies during early stages of pandemics for asset prices. We build a simple susceptible-infected-recovered model with microeconomic foundations, which allows us to obtain qualitative results with economic implications. In our model, lockdown policies reduce (i) labour income by decreasing working hours and (ii) precautionary savings by decreasing susceptible agents' probability of getting infected in the future. We qualitatively show that strengthening lockdown measures negatively impacts asset prices at the time of implementation. Our empirical analysis using data from advanced countries supports this finding. Depending on parameter values, our numerical analysis displays a V-shaped recovery of asset prices and an L-shaped recession of consumption. The rapid recovery of asset prices occurs only if the lockdown policies are insufficiently stringent to reduce the number of new periodic cases. This finding implies the possibility that lenient lockdowns have contributed to rapid stock market recovery at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the 24-h efficacy and safety of fixed combination carteolol/latanoprost (LCFC) and timolol/latanoprost (LTFC) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, crossover study METHODS: Twenty-two patients pretreated with a prostaglandin analog at baseline were randomly assigned at a 1:1 ratio to either LCFC or LTFC treatment. The patients received the assigned study drug in both eyes daily in the evening (20:00). Each treatment group crossed over after a 2-month treatment period. The 24-h curves of intraocular pressure (IOP), pulse rate, and blood pressure were evaluated. Safety was also assessed. RESULTS: The changes in mean daytime IOP from baseline at the end of the 2-month treatment period in the LCFC and LTFC groups were - 0.93 and - 1.15 mmHg, respectively. The changes in peak IOP in the 2 groups were - 0.91 and - 0.68 mmHg, respectively. The nighttime pulse rate in the LCFC group increased; that in the LTFC group was lower at all time points. The changes in pulse rate from baseline at 22:00, 2:00, 4:00, and 6:00 differed statistically between the 2 groups. No differences in changes from baseline in systolic and diastolic blood pressures were found between the groups. CONCLUSION: The 24-h IOP curve of patients in the LCFC group was similar to that of the LTFC group, but on the basis of the pulse rate findings, the effect of LCFC on the cardiovascular system over 24 h was less than that of LTFC.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials possess a crystal structure in which a covalently-bonded few atomic-layer motif forms a single unit with individual motifs being weakly bound to each other by vdW forces. Cr2Ge2Te6 is known as a 2D vdW ferromagnetic insulator as well as a potential phase change material for non-volatile memory applications. Here, we provide evidence for a dimensional transformation in the chemical bonding from a randomly bonded three-dimensional (3D) disordered amorphous phase to a 2D bonded vdW crystalline phase. A counterintuitive metastable "quasi-layered" state during crystallization that exhibits both "long-range order and short-range disorder" with respect to atomic alignment clearly distinguishes the system from conventional materials. This unusual behavior is thought to originate from the 2D nature of the crystalline phase. These observations provide insight into the crystallization mechanism of layered materials in general, and consequently, will be useful for the realization of 2D vdW material-based functional nanoelectronic device applications.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Amyloid-ß protein (Aß) is one of the causative proteins of Alzheimer's disease. We have been developing extracorporeal blood Aß-removal systems as a method for enhancing Aß clearance from the brain. We reported previously that medical adsorbents and hemodialyzers removed Aß monomers from peripheral blood, which was associated with influx of Aß monomers from the brain into the bloodstream. Our intent here was to develop a method to promote clearance of Aß oligomers and to provide an estimate of the molecular size of intact Aß oligomers in plasma. METHODS: Two hollow-fiber devices with different pore sizes (Membranes A and B) were evaluated as removers of Aß oligomers with human plasma in vitro. The concomitant removal of Aß oligomers and monomers was investigated by using Membrane B and hexadecyl alkylated cellulose beads or polysulfone hemodialyzers. Double-filtration plasmapheresis with Membrane A was investigated as an approach for the removal of plasma Aß oligomers in humans. RESULTS: Aß oligomers were effectively removed by both Membranes A and B. The increase of Aß oligomers in plasma was observed just after the removal of plasma Aß oligomers in humans. The intact molecular size of major Aß oligomers in the plasma was estimated to be larger than albumin at approximately 60 kDa or more. Additionally, the concomitant removal of Aß monomers and oligomers evoked dissociation of larger Aß oligomers into smaller ones and monomers. CONCLUSION: Aß oligomers were cleared from plasma both in vitro and in human subjects by using hollow-fiber membranes with large pores, indicating that their intact sizes were mostly larger than 60 kDa. Aß oligomers in peripheral circulation were increased after some clearances in human. Further investigation will determine whether the Aß oligomers detected in circulation after clearance were via influx from the brain.

RESUMO

The development of inorganic membranes has mainly found applicability in liquid separation technologies. However, only a few reports cite the permeation and separation of liquids through inorganic nanofiltration membranes compared with the more popular microfiltration membranes. Herein, we prepared silica membranes using 3,3,3-trifluoropropyltrimethoxysilane (TFPrTMOS) to investigate its liquid permeance performance using four different ion solutions (i.e., NaCl, Na2SO4, MgCl2, and MgSO4). The TFPrTMOS-derived membranes were deposited above a temperature of 175 °C, where the deposition behavior of TFPrTMOS was dependent on the organic functional groups decomposition temperature. The highest membrane rejection was from NaCl at 91.0% when deposited at 200 °C. For anions, the SO42- rejections were the greatest. It was also possible to separate monovalent and divalent anions, as the negatively charged groups on the membrane surfaces retained pore sizes >1.48 nm. Ions were also easily separated by molecular sieving below a pore size of 0.50 nm. For the TFPrTMOS-derived membrane deposited at 175 °C, glucose showed 67% rejection, which was higher than that achieved through the propyltrimethoxysilane membrane. We infer that charge exclusion might be due to the dissociation of hydroxyl groups resulting from decomposition of organic groups. Pore size and organic functional group decomposition were found to be important for ion permeation.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Little attention has been paid to the contribution of individual residual symptom to predict relapse in patients with schizophrenia receiving oral or long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics. METHOD: We used the data from the Preventing Relapse on Oral Antipsychotics Compared to Injectables - Evaluating Efficacy (PROACTIVE) study, in which 305 outpatients with schizophrenia were randomly allocated to either biweekly LAI-risperidone (LAI-R) or daily oral second-generation antipsychotics (SGA) and assessed for up to 30 months. Baseline individual symptoms that could predict subsequent relapse were identified, using a Cox proportional hazards model. Moreover, among those who relapsed during the study (n = 73), individual symptoms were compared between baseline and biweekly ratings 8 to 2 weeks before relapse, using the linear mixed model. RESULTS: A greater score in grandiosity at baseline was significantly associated with subsequent relapse (adjusted HR = 1.24, p = 0.006). When the two treatment groups were separately analyzed, more severe grandiosity (adjusted HR = 1.43, p = 0.003) and less severe hallucinatory behavior (adjusted HR = 0.70, p = 0.013) at baseline were significantly associated with relapse in the oral SGA group, but none was identified in the LAI-R group. Emotional withdrawal was significantly worse 8 and 2 weeks before relapse compared to the baseline (p = 0.032 and p = 0.043, respectively). DISCUSSION: More severe grandiosity and less hallucination may have led to more frequent relapses in patients with schizophrenia receiving oral antipsychotics, which was not a case in those receiving LAI-R. The exploratory analysis indicates an increase in emotional withdrawal before relapse may be a useful marker for earlier interventions to possibly avert relapse.

RESUMO

Cr2Ge2Te6 (CrGT) is a phase change material with higher resistivity in the crystalline phase than in the amorphous phase. CrGT exhibits an ultralow operation energy for amorphization. In this study, the origin of the increased resistance in crystalline CrGT compared to amorphous CrGT and the underlying phase change mechanism were investigated in terms of both local structural change and associated change in electronic state. The density of states at the Fermi level in crystalline CrGT decreased with increasing annealing temperature and became negligible upon annealing at 380 °C. Simultaneously, the Fermi level shifted from the vicinity of the valence band to the band gap center, leading to an increase in resistance. The phase change from amorphous to crystalline CrGT occurred through a metastable crystalline phase with a local structure similar to that of the amorphous phase. Cr nanoclusters were confirmed to exist in both the amorphous and crystalline phases. The presence of Cr nanoclusters induced Cr vacancies in the crystalline phase. These Cr vacancies generated hole carriers, leading to p-type conduction. Photoelectron spectroscopy of the Cr 2s core level clearly indicated a decrease in the fraction of Cr-Cr bonds and an increase in the fraction of Cr-Te bonds in crystalline CrGT upon annealing. Meanwhile, the coordination number of the Cr nanoclusters decreased as the number of Cr-Cr bonds was reduced. Together, these results imply that the origin of the increased resistance in crystalline CrGT is the filling of Cr vacancies by Cr atoms diffusing from Cr nanoclusters.
