RESUMO

This study examines the mercury content in the marine matrices water column, surface sediment and benthic invertebrates of Coronel and Coliumo bays, central Chile, under winter and summer conditions. Coronel Bay has been subject to intense industrialization in the last three decades, while Coliumo Bay remains as a fisherman's cove and a popular summer tourism destination. Our results reveal significantly higher mercury concentrations in the three environmental matrices analyzed for Coronel Bay, while Coliumo Bay exhibits levels within the range considered natural. Moreover, the mercury levels in Coronel Bay exceed the optimal criteria for aquatic life, indicating a deterioration in environmental quality of this locality. Industrial development is identified as main factor explaining the differences observed between these two coastal water bodies. This study presents the most updated record of mercury levels in the Southeast Pacific and represents the first comprehensive evaluation of marine environmental matrices in two bays with divergent activities.

This study examines metal concentrations in sediments under the influence of the oxygen minimum zone of the SE-Pacific and the anthropogenic impact following industrialization in Caldera Bay (27° S), which is one of the main ore-loading ports in operation from 1849. 210Pb and the CRS dating method were employed to estimate the age in two sediment cores sectioned at 1 cm. Metal concentrations from selected samples suggested clear impacts of industrial activities after ∼1860 on Cu, and moderate impacts on Fe, Pb, and Zn. Further, authigenic enrichment of nutrient type and redox-sensitive elements (Ni, Cd, Mo, and V) in ancient times was observed. This enrichment was related to low oxygen at the bottom and high productivity. As this condition varies over time, it could result in erroneous estimations of preindustrial values. Overall, we highlight the impact of natural processes on metal distribution in marine sediments during environmental assessments and regulations.

Among the main sources of atmospheric mercury emissions are thermoelectric plants that use coal to generate electricity. This heavy metal is transported by air from its origin to neighboring coastal areas, where it is deposited in the sediment record. This research evaluated the content and temporal distribution of Hg in the coastal sediments of Central Chile, Coronel Bay, industrialized zone with two operative thermoelectric plants, and Coliumo Bay, reference zone free of industry. To this end, sediment cores from the centers of the two bays were obtained. Laboratory results show that the greatest Hg contents were found in the surface strata of the Coronel Bay core, with concentrations up to an order of magnitude greater than those obtained in the same strata in Coliumo Bay. This increase in Hg concentration coincides with the beginning of industrial activity in Coronel, with greater concentrations observed from 2012 on, the year in which the industrial operation of two coal-fired thermoelectric plants on the bay began. Based on 210Pb activity and the relationships between Hg content and organic matter, it was established that the main pathway of Hg to sediment is atmospheric deposition, while Coliumo presented inputs that reflect local non anthropogenic sources.

Individuals vary in how their circadian system synchronizes with the cyclic environment (zeitgeber). Assessing these differences in "phase of entrainment"-often referred to as chronotype-is an important procedure in laboratory experiments and epidemiological studies but is also increasingly applied in circadian medicine, both in diagnosis and therapy. While biochemical measurements (e.g., dim-light melatonin onset [DLMO]) of internal time are still the gold standard, they are laborious, expensive, and mostly rely on special conditions (e.g., dim light). Chronotype estimation in the form of questionnaires is useful in approximating the timing of an individual's circadian clock. They are simple, inexpensive, and location independent (e.g., administrable on- and offline) and can therefore be easily administered to many individuals. The Munich ChronoType Questionnaire (MCTQ) is an established instrument to assess chronotype by asking subjects about their sleep-wake-behavior. Here we present a shortened version of the MCTQ, the µMCTQ, for use in situations in which instrument length is critical, such as in large cohort studies. The µMCTQ contains only the core chronotype module of the standard MCTQ (stdMCTQ), which was shortened and adapted from 17 to 6 essential questions, allowing for a quick assessment of chronotype and other related parameters such as social jetlag and sleep duration. µMCTQ results correspond well to the ones collected by the stdMCTQ and are externally validated by actimetry and DLMO, assessed at home (no measure of compliance). Sleep onset, midpoint of sleep, and the µMCTQ-derived marker of chronotype showed slight deviations toward earlier times in the µMCTQ when compared with the stdMCTQ (<35 min). The µMCTQ assessment of chronotype showed good test-retest reliability and correlated significantly with phase markers from actimetry and melatonin (DLMO), especially with measurements taken on work-free days. Because of its brevity, the µMCTQ represents an ideal tool to estimate individual internal time in time-critical contexts, from large cohort studies to individualized medicine.

This paper reports long-term concentration records of metals and organic halogenated compounds in tissues of 49 species of marine organisms from Eastern South Pacific coast, Biobio region, Chile during a marine monitoring program developed between 2006 and 2015. Principal component (PCA) and generalized linear model (GLM) analyses indicated significant differences in the concentrations of metals and organic halogenated compounds among taxonomic and functional groups. The strongest relationships exist between species that share similar feeding habits rather than between species of the same taxonomic group or habitat. The significant differences between these groups were maintained over time; thus concentrations detected are, in general, within the ranges reported at genus level for Chile and the rest of the world. Since there is no evidence of any pollution process in the area, this information can be used as an environmental reference to establish natural concentrations for the parameters and organisms analyzed.

Globally, Chile is the second largest producer of mussels, with 99% of production concentrated in the inland sea of the Los Lagos Region, Southern Chile. This study reveals that seasons produce a drastic difference in the cadmium concentration (Cd) in marine mussels in bay, channel, and fjord ecosystems in this area. As the global mussel industry continues its rapid expansion, a complete understanding of cadmium pathways is critical in order to minimize the cadmium content in harvests. In this study, biweekly sampling was conducted in Chiloé (Southern Chile), during five consecutive seasons from June 2014 to November 2015. Cadmium in the soft tissues (ST) and in the content of the digestive gland (CDG) of Mytilus chilensis were investigated, in addition to resuspensions and seston to determine the effect of the seasons on metal bioassimilation capacity. In spring, the (Cd) between CDG and ST varied by approximately 2 mg Cd kg-1 dry mass (DM). In summer and autumn, the (Cd) in CDG increased from 3 to 6 mg Cd kg-1 while the (Cd) in ST decreased from 2.5 to 1.5 mg Cd kg-1 DM. The three ecosystems showed the same cadmium bioconcentration trends in all seasons, revealing coherent global trends. These findings should caution the industry and coastal populations about the seasonal variability and intensity of cadmium metal transfer to biofilters, especially because of the adverse effects of cadmium consumption on human health. Additionally, this study found that mussels in natural beds concentrate more Cd (> 1 mg Cd kg-1 DM) than in industrial facilities. Multiregression analysis showed and explained the cadmium in CDG for three ecosystems: channel (R2 0.9537), bay (R2 0.5962), and fjord (R2 0.4009). The independent variable nocturnal seston was able to explain the increase in cadmium.

The relationship between the occurrence of forest fires in central Chile and the total concentration of dioxins and furans (PCDD/F) in nearby coastal waters was analyzed. The data for this analysis was obtained from a long-term environmental monitoring program (PROMNA) in the Bio-Bio Region. Quantification of PCDD/F was performed using HRGC/HRMS at the MSS laboratory in England. Between 2006 and 2014, peaks were observed in February 2007 and 2012. These concentration maxima coincided with major forest fires in the Bio-Bio Region and particularly with those in the Itata River Basin. The January 2012 fires generated an intense short-term response that was associated with atmospheric transport which increases medium toxicity furan-type congeners concentrations (TCDF, PCDF and HxCDF) and six months later a concentration increase of low toxicity dioxin-type congeners was observed (OCDD, HpCDD and HxCDD) coinciding with maximum winter river flow. These results suggest that forest fires near the coastal zone are responsible for increases in PCDD/F concentration observed in the study area.

Concentrations of seven metals (Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, Ni, Zn) were determined in 256 surface sediment samples, collected between May 2006 and November 2009, from 15 stations at the mouth of the Itata River and its adjacent marine zone (central-southern Chile) as part of an environmental monitoring program. The objectives of the work were to: (i) establish baseline metal concentrations in the sediments of the area and (ii) identify tendencies in the spatial and temporal distribution of the metals in these marine sediments. Concentrations were highest in the north zone of the Itata River mouth (stations E2C, E13C) for all the metals and at the stations farthest offshore from the mouth (E4, E6) for Cu, Fe, Pb, and Ni. The ranges in those concentrations were lower than those reported in other studies performed along the Chilean coast and lower than those observed in most other coastal systems around the world. Based on results of the indices used (geoaccumulation index, enrichment factor), the coastal sediments were not measurably elevated above natural levels.

In January 2008, most of the southern coastal zone of the Humboldt Current System was affected by an intense upwelling event. This caused an intrusion of equatorial sub-surface water into the coastal zone, generating severe hypoxic conditions (≤0.5 ml O(2) l(-1)) three days after the beginning of the event. A rapid, massive die-off of marine organisms occurred in Coliumo Bay on January 3rd, affecting zooplankton, mollusks, crustaceans and fishes. Normal oxygen concentrations were observed on January 10th, seven days after the hypoxic event. Here we analyze the response of the epibenthic macrofauna community using data spanning three years of sampling which encompass the short-term hypoxic disturbance in the bay. We found that (i) strong changes in total density, total biomass, and diversity occurred immediately after the hypoxic event, negatively affecting crustaceans and fishes, while gastropods were favored, (ii) initial changes were reverted over a period of three months, (iii) on an inter-annual time scale, species richness and diversity decreased following the hypoxic event. Total density increased strongly, but total biomass showed no clear inter-annual trend. These results show that, while initial recovery from hypoxia was fast, over longer time scales the community exhibited a shift to an alternative structure dominated principally by Nassariid scavenger species.

This study evaluates the main sources of antropogenic Pb in one of the most industrialized centers of the southern Chilean coast (36 degrees S). Stable lead isotopes ((206)Pb/(207)Pb, (208)Pb/(207)Pb) were used to trace main Pb sources to coastal sediments, considering the suspended particulate matter (SPM) from marine (traps), continental (rivers) and industrial effluents, sediments and leaded gasoline samples. The atmospheric input was evaluated through natural collectors; i.e. Raqui-Tubul salt marsh. Results show that marine samples lie on a trend between industrial effluents ( approximately 1.16, 2.44) and natural sources (1.20, 2.50), not related to gasoline consumption. Salt marsh sediments show comparable isotopic composition to marine samples, suggesting the importance of the atmospheric input in the coastal sediments, not related to the leaded gasoline composition either. The continental input (1.18, 2.48) is highly influenced by precipitation, being difficult to separate both sources (atmosphere and continental runoff), showing also similar isotopic ratio to marine sediments. The signal of industrial emissions is masked with the introduction of Pb with higher isotopic ratios, compared to the values observed in the material collected from traps (SPM approximately 1.19, 2.48). The contribution of more radiogenic Pb by the upwelling is suggested.

Atmospheric input of Pb to coastal sediments in the south-east Pacific (approximately 36 degrees S) was estimated using: (1) a salt marsh (non-local emission sources) as a natural collector of atmospheric fluxes and (2) Pb concentrations in rain and air samples, both considered to be representative of the atmospheric input in the study area. A radioisotopic geochronology technique ((210)Pb) was used to estimate the total Pb atmospheric supply to the sediments. The results show that atmospheric input to Concepción Bay accounts for 13-68% of Pb in near shore sediments, evaluated through salt marsh and rain, both showing comparable results. Consequently, there are other relevant Pb sources to explain the higher concentrations in this area. Sediments in the shelf are subject to important influence of upwelling waters, estimated by Salamanca [Sources and sinks of (210)Pb in Concepción Bay, Chile (1993) PhD thesis, Marine Science Research Center, State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA] using (210)Pb. The atmospheric input, however, is mainly responsible for the total Pb input, since the salt marsh (natural atmospheric collector) shows similar Pb(xs) inventories than the shelf, corresponding to a regional-scale Pb emissions.
