RESUMO

Infrastructure is often a limiting factor in microplastics research impacting the production of scientific outputs and monitoring data. International projects are therefore required to promote collaboration and development of national and regional scientific hubs. The Commonwealth Litter Programme and the Ocean Country Partnership Programme were developed to support Global South countries to take actions on plastics entering the oceans. An international laboratory network was developed to provide the infrastructure and in country capacity to conduct the collection and processing of microplastics in environmental samples. The laboratory network was also extended to include a network developed by the University of East Anglia, UK. All the laboratories were provided with similar equipment for the collection, processing and analysis of microplastics in environmental samples. Harmonised protocols and training were also provided in country during laboratory setup to ensure comparability of quality-controlled outputs between laboratories. Such large networks are needed to produce comparable baseline and monitoring assessments.

RESUMO

To reduce microplastic contamination in the environment, we need to better understand its sources and transit, especially from land to sea. This study examines microplastic contamination in Jakarta's nine river outlets. Microplastics were found in all sampling intervals and areas, ranging from 4.29 to 23.49 particles m-3. The trend of microplastic contamination tends to increase as the anthropogenic activity towards Jakarta Bay from the eastern side of the bay. Our study found a link between rainfall and the abundance of microplastic particles in all river outlets studied. This investigation found polyethylene, polystyrene, and polypropylene in large proportion due to their widespread use in normal daily life and industrial applications. Our research observed an increase in microplastic fibers made of polypropylene over time. We suspect a relationship between COVID-19 PPE waste and microplastic shift in our study area. More research is needed to establish how and where microplastics enter rivers.

RESUMO

Seagrass carbon emission is mainly due to the land-use change; therefore, conservation will be an approach required for carbon offset. A method for estimating carbon offset from conservation activities has been developed. This study aims to evaluate the carbon-offset potential of the seagrass ecosystem by applying this method to five provinces in Indonesia. North Maluku has the widest seagrass area, but only 5% of this is the conserved area. Meanwhile, Jakarta has the highest percentage of its conserved seagrass within the area. Emission reduction at the year 2020 ranged 0.03-1.02 tC/year (with leakage) or 0.05-2.04 tC/year (without leakage). The percentage of emission reduction among the five provinces ranged from 0.75% to 11.3%. About 9.03 tC/year emission from seagrass ecosystems in Jakarta will decrease by up to 8.01 tC/year. Further assessment shows a positive correlation between the percentage of the conserved area and the percentage of emission reduction.
