RESUMO

In this manuscript, a comprehensive study is presented on Fe-based electrocatalysts with mono, bi, and tri-metallic compositions, emphasizing the influence of processing-structure correlations on the electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the alkaline medium. These electrocatalysts were synthesized through the mixing of transition metal phthalocyanines (TM-Pc) with conductive carbon support, followed by controlled thermal treatment at specific temperatures (600 °C and 900 °C). An extensive analysis was conducted, employing various techniques, including X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD), providing valuable insights into the structural characteristics of the synthesized nanoparticles. Importantly, an increase in the Fe-Pc weight percentage from 10% to 30% enhanced the ORR activity, although not proportionally. Furthermore, a comparative analysis between mono, bi, and tri-metallic samples subjected to different functionalization temperatures highlighted the superior electrocatalytic activity of electrocatalysts functionalized at 600 °C, particularly Fe 600 and Fe-Ni-Cu 600. These electrocatalysts featured Eon values of 0.96 V vs. RHE and E1/2 values of 0.9 V vs. RHE, with the added benefit of reduced anionic peroxide production. The potential of these Fe-based electrocatalysts to enhance ORR efficiency is underscored by this research, contributing to the development of more effective and sustainable electrocatalysts for energy conversion technologies.

RESUMO

We compared the H2 production from glycerol photoreforming for different TiO2 polymorphs, highlighting an increase of activity in the order Pt-rutile < Pt-P25 ≈ Pt-anatase < Pt-brookite with a different distribution of the reaction intermediates. We show that the highest ability to adsorb water and the different distribution of Pt active sites in brookite can positively influence its photoactivity.

RESUMO

Next-generation alkaline water electrolyzers will be based on zero-gap configuration to further reduce costs related to technology and to improve performance. Here, anodic porous transport layers (PTLs) for zero-gap alkaline electrolysis are prepared through a facile one-step electrodeposition of Ni,Fe,Co-based layered double hydroxides (LDH) on 304 stainless steel (SS) meshes. Electrodeposited LDH structures are characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) confirming the formation of high surface area catalytic layers. Finally, bi and trimetallic LDH-based PTLs are tested as electrodes for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH solution. The best electrodes are based on FeCo LDH, reaching 10 mA cm-2 with an overpotential value of 300 mV. These PTLs are also tested with a chronopotentiometric measurement carried out for 100 h at 50 mA cm-2, showing outstanding durability without signs of electrocatalytic activity degradation.

RESUMO

The study aimed to set up a protocol for the production of a clean-label plant-based beverage (PBB), obtained by mixing chickpeas and Kamut® flours and using a commercial Lactococcus lactis (LL) as fermentation starter, and to characterize it, from nutritional, microbiological, textural, shelf-life, and sensory points of view. The effect of using the starter was evaluated comparing the LL-PBB with a spontaneously fermented beverage (CTRL-PBB). Both PBBs were high in proteins (3.89/100 g) and could be considered as sources of fiber (2.06/100 g). Notably, L. lactis fermentation enhanced the phosphorus (478 vs. 331 mg/kg) and calcium (165 vs. 117 mg/kg) concentrations while lowering the raffinose content (5.51 vs. 5.08 g/100 g) compared to spontaneous fermentation. Cell density of lactic acid bacteria increased by ca. two log cycle during fermentation of LL-PBB, whereas undesirable microbial groups were not detected. Furthermore, L. lactis significantly improved the beverage's viscosity (0.473 vs. 0.231 Pa s), at least for 10 days, and lightness. To assess market potential, we conducted a consumer test, presenting the LL-PBB in "plain" and "sweet" (chocolate paste-added) variants. The "sweet" LL-PBB demonstrated a higher acceptability score than its "plain" counterpart, with 88 and 78% of participants expressing acceptability and a strong purchase intent, respectively. This positive consumer response positions the sweet LL-PBB as a valuable, appealing alternative to traditional flavored yogurts, highlighting its potential in the growing plant-based food market.

RESUMO

Spinel oxides with the general formula AB2O4 comprise a large family of compounds covering a very wide range of band-gap values (1 eV < Eg < 8 eV) as a function of the nature of the metallic cations A and B. Owing to this, the physical properties of these materials have been largely exploited both from a fundamental point of view, for their variable electronic properties, and for their possible use in numerous engineering applications. Herein, the modeling of ZnAl2O4, ZnGa2O4, MgAl2O4, and MgGa2O4 cubic spinel oxides has been carried out by using the semiempirical approach based on the difference of electronegativity between oxygen and the average electronegativity of cations present in the oxides. The results of recent theoretical extensions of our semiempirical approach to ternary and quaternary oxides have been tested for spinel oxides with metallic ions occupying both octahedrally and tetrahedrally coordinated sites in different ratios. A detailed analysis of the experimental band-gap values and comparison with the theoretically estimated values has been carried out for ternary ZnAl2O4, ZnGa2O4, MgAl2O4, and MgGa2O4 spinels as well as for double spinels Mg(Al2xGa2-x)O4 and Zn(Al2xGa2-x)O4, and quaternary mixed oxides (ZnxMg(1-x))Al2O4 and (ZnxMg(1-x))Ga2O4. The wide range of band-gap values reported in the literature for simple or double spinels has been related to the different preparation methods affecting the grain dimension of crystalline spinel samples as well as to the presence of crystallographic defects and/or impurities in the spinel matrix. The good agreement between experimental band-gap values and the theoretical ones strongly supports the use of our semiempirical approach in the area of band-gap engineering of new materials.

RESUMO

Composite chitosan/phosphotungstic acid (CS/PTA) with the addition of TiO2 and Al2O3 particles were synthesized to be used as proton exchange membranes in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The influence of fillers was assessed through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, liquid uptake, ion exchange capacity and methanol permeability measurements. The addition of TiO2 particles into proton exchange membranes led to an increase in crystallinity and a decrease in liquid uptake and methanol permeability with respect to pristine CS/PTA membranes, whilst the effect of the introduction of Al2O3 particles on the characteristics of membranes is almost the opposite. Membranes were successfully tested as proton conductors in a single module DMFC of 1 cm2 as active area, operating at 50 °C fed with 2 M methanol aqueous solution at the anode and oxygen at the cathode. Highest performance was reached by using a membrane with TiO2 (5 wt.%) particles, i.e., a power density of 40 mW cm-2, almost doubling the performance reached by using pristine CS/PTA membrane (i.e., 24 mW cm-2).

RESUMO

Anodic oxides were grown to 50 V on Ta-Nb sputtering deposited alloys, with high Nb content, in acetate ions containing an aqueous solution to study the effect of the anodizing bath composition on anodic layers' dielectric properties. Photoelectrochemical measurements proved the presence of a photocurrent in the band gap of photon energy lower than oxides, due to optical transitions involving localized electronic states as a consequence of acetate ions incorporation. Flat band potential value estimates assessed the insulating nature of the anodic oxides grown in the acetate buffer solution. Differential capacitance measurements showed that the highest capacitance value was measured for the sample grown on Ta-66%Nb. This capacitance value was higher with respect to those estimated for pure Ta and pure Nb anodic layers and with respect to the same alloy anodized in NaOH solution, i.e., acetate-free anodizing bath.

RESUMO

Work helps to satisfy instrumental and transcendental needs. For people affected by armed conflict, work has an additional value because it helps them overcome the social disadvantage they suffer; however, topics such as meaningful workMWhave been poorly studied in this type of population. Based on the above, we propose to analyze the relationship between meaningful work and satisfaction with life in one of the largest private supported employment programs for people involved in the armed conflict in Colombia. To this end, a nonexperimental, quantitative case study was conducted with 62 employees of that employment program. To collect the data, a survey with two measurement scales was administered: Work as Meaning Inventory and Satisfaction with Life Scale. Sociodemographic variables were also obtained. The results demonstrate that meaningful work has a significant effect on satisfaction with life (R2 = 0.28, p < 0.00). We conclude that having meaningful work that provides a sense of belonging, interpersonal connection, and attachment generates greater satisfaction with life in the workers involved in the analyzed program. We also discuss the implications of this research for companies and public policy in Colombia.

RESUMO

Nucleotide sequences reference collections or databases are fundamental components in DNA barcoding and metabarcoding data analyses pipelines. In such analyses, the accurate taxonomic assignment is a crucial aspect, relying directly on the availability of comprehensive and curated reference sequence collection and its taxonomy information. The currently wide use of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit-I (COXI) as a standard DNA barcode marker in metazoan biodiversity studies highlights the need to shed light on the availability of the related relevant information from different data sources and their eventual integration. To adequately address data integration process, many aspects should be markedly considered starting from DNA sequence curation followed by taxonomy alignment with solid reference backbone and metadata harmonization according to universal standards. Here, we present MetaCOXI, an integrated collection of curated metazoan COXI DNA sequences with their associated harmonized taxonomy and metadata. This collection was built on the two most extensive available data resources, namely the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) and the Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD). The current release contains more than 5.6 million entries (39.1% unique to BOLD, 3.6% unique to ENA, and 57.2% shared between both), their related taxonomic classification based on NCBI reference taxonomy, and their available main metadata relevant to environmental DNA studies, such as geographical coordinates, sampling country and host species. MetaCOXI is available in standard universal formats ('fasta' for sequences & 'tsv' for taxonomy and metadata), which can be easily incorporated in standard or specific DNA barcoding and/or metabarcoding data analysis pipelines. RESUMO

The "Signaling Theory" is a theoretical framework that investigates the content reported in sustainability reports, considering that through signaling, companies can influence stakeholders' perceptions, create a competitive advantage and positively impact their corporate image. Signals can be classified into three types: camouflage, intent and necessity. By analyzing their sustainability reports, this study presents a step-by-step approach to classifying sustainability practices reported by companies according to the aforementioned types of signals. We propose a step-by-step approach based on a thematic and qualitative analysis that encourages replication by the research community. Details in the study will validate the proposed method and consider the lessons learned.•A method is proposed that allows the sustainability practices reported by companies to be classified into camouflage, intent and necessity signals through their sustainability reports.•A seven-step process for thematic analysis is described based on a qualitative research approach for achieving the above-mentioned goal.•The classification of sustainability practices into the camouflage typology is a challenging process, as it tends to be biased, hence the identification of this type of signals in comparison with those of intent and necessity requires the adoption of measures that guarantee the reduction of bias on the part of the researcher.

RESUMO

Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is a primary bone tumor that affects skeletally mature people and whose main treatment is surgical. Because there are few pharmacological alternatives for the treatment of this tumor to find other molecules or compounds that could be potential therapeutic agents is desirable. Quercetin is a flavonoid with described antitumoral effect in different types of cancer cell lines that could be a possible option in GCTB treatment. However, there is no literature about the effect of quercetin on GCTB. In the present paper, we reported the ultrastructural changes in GCTB cells exposed to quercetin and also determined the expression of RIP1K, Caspase 3 and Caspase 8 on the exposed cells. For this purpose, GCTB sample was obtained from one patient and cultured. Quercetin affected all the histological components of the GCTB. The ultrastructural changes consisted mainly in necroptosis, autophagocytosis and secondary necrosis. This is the first report about quercetin effects on giant cell tumor of bone cultured cells. Further studies in other models could be done to support the use of quercetin as a complementary treatment in giant cell tumor of bone.Abbreviations: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB); transmission electron microscopy (TEM); reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR); receptor interacting protein kinase 1 (RIP1K); Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM).

RESUMO

Seahorses are considered a flagship species for conservation efforts and due to their conservation status, improving knowledge on their dietary composition while applying a non-invasive approach, could be useful. Using Hippocampus guttulatus as a case study, the present study represents pioneering research into investigating the diet of seahorses by NGS-based DNA metabarcoding of fecal samples. The study developed and tested the protocol for fecal DNA metabarcoding during the feeding trials where captive seahorses were fed on a diet of known composition; the process was subsequently applied on fecal samples collected from wild individuals. The analysis of samples collected during the feeding trials indicated the reliability of the applied molecular approach by allowing the characterization of the effectively ingested prey. In the field study, among detected prey species, results revealed that the majority of the seahorse samples contained taxa such as Amphipoda, Decapoda, Isopoda, and Calanoida, while less common prey taxa were Gastropoda and Polyplacophora. As only a small amount of starting fecal material is needed and the sampling procedure is neither invasive nor lethal. The present study indicates DNA metabarcoding as useful for investigating seahorse diet and could help define management and conservation actions.

RESUMO

Coatings were grown on the AZ31 Mg alloy by a hard anodizing process in the hot glycerol phosphate-containing electrolyte. Anodizing conditions were optimized, maximizing corrosion resistance estimated by impedance measurements carried out in Hank's solution at 37 °C. A post anodizing annealing treatment (350 °C for 24 h) allowed us to further enhance the corrosion resistance of the coatings mainly containing magnesium phosphate according to energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Raman analyses. Gravimetric measurements revealed a hydrogen evolution rate within the limits acceptable for application of AZ31 in biomedical devices. In vitro tests demonstrated that the coatings are biocompatible with a preosteoblast cell line.

RESUMO

A generalization of the modeling equation of optical band gap values for ternary oxides, as a function of cationic ratio composition, is carried out based on the semiempirical correlation between the differences in the electronegativity of oxygen and the average cationic electronegativity proposed some years ago. In this work, a novel approach is suggested to account for the differences in the band gap values of the different polymorphs of binary oxides as well as for ternary oxides existing in different crystalline structures. A preliminary test on the validity of the proposed modeling equations has been carried out by using the numerous experimental data pertaining to alumina and gallia polymorphs as well as the crystalline ternary Ga(1-x)AlxO3 polymorphs (α-Ga(1-x)AlxO3 and ß-Ga(1-x)AlxO3) covering a large range of optical band gap values (4.50-8.50 eV). To make a more rigorous test of the modeling equation, we extended our investigation to amorphous ternary oxides anodically formed on Al-d-metal alloys (Al-Nb, Al-Ta, and Al-W) covering a large range of d-metal composition (xd-metal ≥ 0.2). In the last case, the novel approach allows one to overcome some difficulties experienced in fitting the optical band gap dependence from the Al-d-metal mixed anodic oxide composition as well as to provide a rationale for the departure, at the lowest d-metal content (xd-metal < 0.2), from the behavior observed for anodic films containing higher d-metal content.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) have been proposed as a promising complement to standard immunosuppression in solid organ transplantation because of their immunomodulatory properties. The present work addresses the role of adipose-derived MSC (Ad-MSC) in an experimental model of acute rejection in small bowel transplantation (SBT). MATERIAL/METHODS: Heterotopic allogeneic SBT was performed. A single dose of 1.5x106 Ad-MSC was intra-arterially delivered just before graft reperfusion. Animals were divided into CONTROL (CTRL), CONTROL+Ad-MSC (CTRL_MSC), tacrolimus (TAC), and TAC+Ad-MSC (TAC_MSC) groups. Each Ad-MSC groups was subdivided in autologous and allogeneic third-party groups. RESULTS: Rejection rate and severity were similar in MSC-treated and untreated animals. CTRL_MSC animals showed a decrease in macrophages, T-cell (CD4, CD8, and Foxp3 subsets) and B-cell counts in the graft compared with CTRL, this decrease was attenuated in TAC_MSC animals. Pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and some chemokines and growth factors increased in CTRL_MSC animals, especially in the allogeneic group, whereas milder changes were seen in the TAC groups. CONCLUSION: Ad-MSC did not prevent rejection when administered just before reperfusion. However, they showed immunomodulatory effects that could be relevant for a longer-term outcome. Interference between tacrolimus and the MSC effects should be addressed in further studies.

RESUMO

Threats to global biodiversity are increasingly recognised by scientists and the public as a critical challenge. Molecular sequencing technologies offer means to catalogue, explore, and monitor the richness and biogeography of life on Earth. However, exploiting their full potential requires tools that connect biodiversity infrastructures and resources. As a research infrastructure developing services and technical solutions that help integrate and coordinate life science resources across Europe, ELIXIR is a key player. To identify opportunities, highlight priorities, and aid strategic thinking, here we survey approaches by which molecular technologies help inform understanding of biodiversity. We detail example use cases to highlight how DNA sequencing is: resolving taxonomic issues; Increasing knowledge of marine biodiversity; helping understand how agriculture and biodiversity are critically linked; and playing an essential role in ecological studies. Together with examples of national biodiversity programmes, the use cases show where progress is being made but also highlight common challenges and opportunities for future enhancement of underlying technologies and services that connect molecular and wider biodiversity domains. Based on emerging themes, we propose key recommendations to guide future funding for biodiversity research: biodiversity and bioinformatic infrastructures need to collaborate closely and strategically; taxonomic efforts need to be aligned and harmonised across domains; metadata needs to be standardised and common data management approaches widely adopted; current approaches need to be scaled up dramatically to address the anticipated explosion of molecular data; bioinformatics support for biodiversity research needs to be enabled and sustained; training for end users of biodiversity research infrastructures needs to be prioritised; and community initiatives need to be proactive and focused on enabling solutions. For sequencing data to deliver their full potential they must be connected to knowledge: together, molecular sequence data collection initiatives and biodiversity research infrastructures can advance global efforts to prevent further decline of Earth's biodiversity.

RESUMO

Research suggests that individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) experience difficulties in communication, ranging from intelligibility issues to more severe problems in the use and comprehension of spoken, written or sign language. Despite the negative effects that the inability to communicate have on quality of life (QoL), not much research has explored the relationship between communicative competence and QoL in the adult population with ID. The aim of this study was to describe the global communication profile of a sample of 281 adults with ID recruited from Grupo AMÁS Social Foundation, who differed in their level of communication support needs (CSN). The relationships between communicative competence and CSN with QoL were further examined. The results showed lower QoL indices for those participants characterized by their limited use of discourse and inability to exhibit certain communicative purposes, with the largest differences in the dimensions of self-determination, social inclusion, interpersonal relationships, emotional wellbeing and personal development. Overall, low levels of QoL were found for all participants, with even lower scores for the group identified as having CSN. A multiple regression model revealed that having speech/discourse competence is a powerful predictor of QoL, along with the level of disability and having the communicative competences to express likes and preferences or to establish new relationships. This clear relationship between communication and QoL is an important argument for disability support services when it comes to setting communication supports as a priority and as an important preventive step towards the protection of those at risk of exclusion.
