RESUMO

This study reports for the first time the ingestion of meso- (5.01-25 mm) and microplastics (1 µm-5 mm) by the sea anemone Bunodosoma cangicum, the most abundant actiniarian species on the Amazon coast. At three sites on the coast of Pará, Brazil, anemones were collected from beachrocks in the intertidal zone (30 at each site), measured (pedal disc diameter, mm) and weighed (wet weight, g). The contents of the gastrovascular cavity were extracted and analyzed under a stereoscope. The recovered plastic particles were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Overall, 139 microplastic and 2 mesoplastic items were identified in 68 individuals (75.6%) among the 90 examined, with a mean of 1.6 (±1.5) items per individual. Plastic fibers comprised about 84% of the ingested plastics, followed by fragments (∼12%) and films (∼4%). Particle diameters ranged from 0.10 to 9.17 mm (1.57 ± 1.23 mm). A weak positive correlation was found between the weight of anemones and the number of plastic particles in the gastrovascular cavity (p = 0.03) and between the number of prey items and the number of plastic particles in the gastrovascular cavity (p < 0.01). The main polymers identified by FTIR analysis were polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), polyurethane (PU), polyethylene (PE), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polystyrene (PS) and rayon. Sea anemones ingested significantly more plastic debris at the most urbanized and populous sampling sites. This study provides the first evidence of microplastics contamination of marine invertebrates from the Amazon coast. Abundant species such as B. cangicum have the potential to monitor the levels of plastic contamination in the region. Our results support this potential, as the species showed a high frequency of plastic ingestion and allowed detection of plastic contamination even in the best-preserved area where anemones were collected.

RESUMO

Poultry are the most widely distributed type of livestock in Nigeria. Indigenous chickens are extremely common throughout the country. Indeed, approximately 83 million chickens are raised in extensive systems and 60 million in semi-intensive systems. To provide the first comprehensive overview of the maternal lineages in Southwest Nigeria, we analyzed 96 mitochondrial DNA control region sequences from 2 indigenous chicken ecotypes: Fulani and Yoruba. All samples belonged to the most frequent haplogroup (E) in Africa and Europe and showed noticeably low haplotype diversity. Although only 11 different haplotypes were detected, with 2 of them never found before in Nigeria, the presence of unique sequences among our indigenous samples testified to their status as an important genetic resource to be preserved. Furthermore, a total of 7,868 published sequences were included in the comparative analysis, which revealed an east-west geographic pattern of haplogroup distribution and led to the conclusion that the gene flow from Southeastern Asia mainly involved one mitochondrial clade. Moreover, owing to the extensive genetic intermixing among Nigerian chickens, conservation efforts are required to safeguard the extant mitochondrial variability in these indigenous ecotypes and establish future improvement and selection programs.

RESUMO

The Maremmano is an autochthonous Italian horse breed, which probably descended from the native horses of the Etruscans (VI century B.C.); the Studbook was acknowledged in 1980, and it includes 12 368 horses born from that year up to 2015. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the selection program on the genetic variability of the Maremmano population; the analysis was performed using both the 'Endog v 4.8' program available at http://webs.ucm.es/info/prodanim/html/JP_Web.htm and in-house software on official pedigree data. Four Reference Populations were considered, and the most important one was the population of the 12 368 Maremmano horses officially registered in the National Studbook. The pedigree completeness of this population was very good because it was more than 90% at the third parental generation and more than 70% at the fifth generation; the pedigree traced back to a maximum of 10.50 generations with an average of 3.30 complete generations and 5.70 equivalent complete generations. The average generation interval was 10.65±4.72 years, with stallions used for longer periods than mares. The intervals ranged from 10.15±4.45 (mother-daughter) to 10.99±4.93 (father-daughter). The effective number of founders (f e) was 74 and the effective number of ancestors (f a) was 30 so that the ratio f e/f a was 2.47. The founder genome equivalents (f g) was 13.72 with a ratio f g/f e equal to 0.18. The mean of the genetic conservation index was 5.55±3.37, and it ranged from 0.81 to 21.32. The average inbreeding coefficient was 2.94%, with an increase of 0.1%/year, and the average relatedness coefficient was 5.52%. The effective population size (N e) computed by an individual increase in inbreeding was 68.1±13.00; the N e on equivalent generations was 42.00, and this value slightly increased to 42.20 when computed by Log regression on equivalent generations. The analysis confirmed the presence of seven traditional male lines. The percentage of Thoroughbred blood in the foals born in 2015 was 20.30% and has increased 0.21%/year since 1980; in particular, it increased more than twice (0.51%/year) until 1993 and afterwards slightly fluctuated. The pedigree analysis confirmed the completeness of genealogical information and the traditional importance that breeders gave to the male lines; although the genetic diversity of Maremmano seemed to be not endangered by the selection program, some effects on the population structure were found and a more scientific approach to genetic conservation should be incorporated in the selection plans.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of primary healthcare decentralization on type 2 diabetes mellitus mortality and morbidity in different municipalities of a developing country. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective study based on a panel of annual data from 5560 Brazilian municipalities from 2000 to 2011. METHODS: The investigation used the staggered municipal adoption of a federal health information program as a quasi-experiment to identify the treatment effects of health decentralization on diabetes indicators. Using Difference-in-Differences models and instrumental variables, we analyzed the effects of primary healthcare decentralization on diabetes rates (i.e. diabetes deaths and hospitalizations by the number of people with a diabetes diagnosis and by population). RESULTS: Evidence suggests improvements in universal access to primary health care and progress in the average health outcomes related to diabetes mortality (reduction of 30%) and hospitalization (reduction of 2.3%) due to decentralization. Effects are further pronounced in developed regions with higher incomes, while the poorest and less developed regions showed virtually no effect. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate that there are particular preconditions for successful primary health decentralization, especially related to returns of scale (big health facilities are associated with low cost per treatment), lack of human and physical capital, and government coordination problems.

RESUMO

This systematic review aimed to synthesise information on indices developed to evaluate nutritional quality of meals. A strategy for systematic search of the literature was developed using keywords related to assessment of meal quality. Databases searched included ScienceDirect, PubMed, Lilacs, SciELO, Scopus, Cochrane, Embase and Google Scholar. The literature search resulted in seven different meal quality indices. Each article was analysed in order to identify the following items: authors, country, year, study design, population characteristics, type of meal evaluated, dietary assessment method, characteristics evaluated (nutrients or food items), score range, index components, nutritional references, correlations performed, validation and relationship with an outcome (if existing). Two studies developed instruments to assess the quality of breakfast, three analysed lunch, one evaluated dinner and one was applied to all types of meals and snacks. All meal quality indices reviewed were based on the evaluation of presence or absence of food groups and relative contributions of nutrients, according to food-based guidelines or nutrient references, adapting the daily dietary recommendations to one specific meal. Most of the indices included three items as components for meal quality assessment: (I) total fat or some specific type of fat, (II) fruits and vegetables and (III) cereals or whole grains. This systematic review indicates aspects that need further research, particularly the numerous approaches to assessing meals considering different foods and nutrients, and the need for validation studies of meal indices.

RESUMO

The Marchigiana is famous for its large body size and favorable dressing percentage. A myostatin (MSTN) gene mutation (a G to T transversion) was identified in the breed. The homozygote "GG" yields a "normal" phenotype, the homozygote "TT" yields a double muscled body shape but sometimes causes survival problems, and the heterozygote genotype produces an extremely muscled body without defects. In practice, Marchigiana "TT" homozygotes are culled from reproduction, but the heterozygotes are chosen as sires. The objective of this study was to assess genes involved in Marchigiana muscle development to improve selection procedures. The effects of the MSTN and myogenic factor 5 (MYF5) genes on the growth and muscle traits in the Marchigiana breed were assessed. The effects of MSTN together with the genotype of the causative mutation (g.874G > T) and the effects of the two SNP in the promoter were studied (g.-371T > A and g.-805G > C). The SNP effects were evaluated in a comparison between the means of the several genotypes or for the average gene substitution and dominance effect. Two hundred forty-nine bullocks were evaluated using a performance test. At the beginning and end of the trial, the animals were weighed and their bodies were measured every 21 d up to 12 mo of age. In addition to these observations, morphological scores and the BLUP indices were estimated at the end of the performance test. The obtained results suggested that the MSTN g.874G > T and MYF5 SNP could be considered in the selection program of the Marchigiana breed. A MSTN g.874G > T genotyping service for the breeders could help to avoid the "TT" genotype and to select for the "GT" genotype. The "AA" MYF5 SNP genotype could also be selected for even if good muscle development yields a certain size reduction.

RESUMO

Italy counts several sheep breeds, arisen over centuries as a consequence of ancient and recent genetic and demographic events. To finely reconstruct genetic structure and relationships between Italian sheep, 496 subjects from 19 breeds were typed at 50K single nucleotide polymorphism loci. A subset of foreign breeds from the Sheep HapMap dataset was also included in the analyses. Genetic distances (as visualized either in a network or in a multidimensional scaling analysis of identical by state distances) closely reflected geographic proximity between breeds, with a clear north-south gradient, likely because of high levels of past gene flow and admixture all along the peninsula. Sardinian breeds diverged more from other breeds, a probable consequence of the combined effect of ancient sporadic introgression of feral mouflon and long-lasting genetic isolation from continental sheep populations. The study allowed the detection of previously undocumented episodes of recent introgression (Delle Langhe into the endangered Altamurana breed) as well as signatures of known, or claimed, historical introgression (Merino into Sopravissana and Gentile di Puglia; Bergamasca into Fabrianese, Appenninica and, to a lesser extent, Leccese). Arguments that would question, from a genomic point of view, the current breed classification of Bergamasca and Biellese into two separate breeds are presented. Finally, a role for traditional transhumance practices in shaping the genetic makeup of Alpine sheep breeds is proposed. The study represents the first exhaustive analysis of Italian sheep diversity in an European context, and it bridges the gap in the previous HapMap panel between Western Mediterranean and Swiss breeds.

RESUMO

Chianina is the tallest and heaviest beef cattle breed in the world and 1 of the most appreciated breeds on the Italian meat market. A selection program focused on improving Chianina carcass quality could provide a further economic advantage to Chianina breeders. However, the current European carcass scoring system [i.e., the SEUROP (S=superior, E=excellent, U= very good, R=good, O=fair, and P=poor) grid] is not suitable for use in selective breeding programs; methods based on carcass cuts would be much more efficient. Here, the genetic parameters of weights and yields (percentage of carcass weight) of the main commercial cuts were estimated on 842 Chianina carcasses (heifers and bullocks) using a mixed model that takes into account the fixed effects of herd, year of slaughter, and sex and the random additive effect of the animal; the carcass weight was also considered in cuts yield. The average carcass weights were 492.6 ± 86.52 kg (males) and 312.1 ± 68.74 kg (females), and the largest cut was the round, with a weight of 58.6 ± 19.35 kg and yield of 24.4 ± 1.28% in males and 40.2 ± 17.59 kg and 25.3 ± 1.41% in females. The variability in cut weight was greater than that in yield percentage. The cut weight heritabilities ranged from 0.74 (chuck) to 0.21 (short plate) whereas the yield heritabilities ranged from 0.88 (loin) to 0.40 (brisket). The genetic correlations were generally high and positive between weights; correlation values with yields were lower and could be positive or negative. These findings suggest that a selection program to improve the carcass quality of Chianina beef using cuts data could potentially achieve good results.

RESUMO

This study examined breed-specific stress-related hormonal and gene expression profiles in three Italian chicken breeds (Valdarnese Bianca, Bionda Piemontese, Robusta Maculata) reared in controlled conditions. Glucocorticoids work through the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), which modulates target genes transcription. We investigated breed-specific changes in corticosterone (ELISA) and GR expression. GR mRNA levels were analyzed using one-tube, two-temperature real-time PCR for absolute quantification of the gene expression by the standard curve method. Our results show high expression of GR in hepatic tissue. Significant effect of the breed was recorded for plasma corticosterone concentration: Valdarnese Bianca 3.35 ng/mL, Bionda Piemontese 1.73 ng/mL, Robusta Maculata 2.02 ng/mL. Breed specific gene expression has been recorded with a GR ranging from 1.12E+04 (Robusta Maculata) to 1.00E+05 (Bionda Piemontese) mRNA copy number/100 ng total RNA. Negative correlation was found between gene expression and blood corticosterone level.

RESUMO

The importance of standardizing surgical pathology reports is emerging from the literature. The use of checklists has recently been proposed for diagnosing the major tumour types, but no attention has been given to non-neoplastic conditions. In this paper a checklist for standard reports of liver needle biopsies for non-neoplastic conditions is presented.

RESUMO

The dietary iron intake was studied in 50 volunteers sample of young adults in Bologna neighbourhood; thirty men, mean age 28.9, and 20 women, mean age 30.4. A structured questionnaire was proposed individually by a skilled dietary interviewer. The mean dietary iron daily intake results similar to that found in western industrialised countries, as reported in previous studies, respectively 15.1 mg and 14.0 in men and women. This study reveals a lower percentage of animal origin dietary iron than in northern and central Europe in both sexes, as previously reported (male: 32.8%; female: 27.3%), furthermore the iron intake per kcal was markedly lower (male: 4.91/1000 kcal, female: 5.97) than the level of 7 mg/1000 kcal reported for those countries. The authors argue that the described dietary habit can lead to iron loss balance, mostly in women whose iron intake is far lower than one recommended by LARN (Recommended daily dietary allowances by National Nutrition Italian Institute). It is considered the increasing chance of iron therapy need in women, particularly during long-lasting hypocaloric diets.

RESUMO

This paper reports the results of an epidemiologic survey carried out from 1987 to 1991 among intermediate school students in Chioggia (Venice, Italy) to detect beta-Thalassemia carriers. The screening tests (determination of Mean Corpuscular Volume, Hemoglobin A2) were performed in 3050/4055 (75%) students; the prevalence of carriers was of 3.1%. The results obtained identify this as a risk area for Thalassemia Major and suggest the necessity to adopt prevention measures such as medical information, population screening, genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis.

RESUMO

A man aged 51 with dextrocardia and right common and internal carotid artery agenesis is described. Cerebral blood flow is allowed internally by the left carotid and left vertebral antegrade flow, while right artery has only the function to drain the blood from the left side of vertebral system. A small external right carotid does exist, but it is separated from the cerebral hemodynamics. Diagnosis of dextrocardia was made on the basis of the standard chest X-ray, that of carotid agenesis on the basis of selective digital arteriography, color-Doppler and magnetic resonance. The diagnosis of congenital agenesis was based on the absence of a foramen caroticus and of a canalis caroticus. Large anasthomosis between the left and right side of cerebral system permit a normal perfusion to left cerebral hemispherium and a quite normal life.

RESUMO

Experience in treating heroin addicts with a major neuroleptic, Chlothiapin (Entumin Sandoz) is described. Treatment was begun on 16 cases and completed on 12. Slight signs of asthenia appeared in three cases. All patients completing the treatment achieved a normal sleeping pattern and reduced anxiety. Thus after a 7 day course patients could be transferred to a specialist drug addiction centre.
