In broiler breeder production, up to 2% of hatching eggs are rejected because of cracked or broken shells. Eggs with cracks give a reduced hatchability and a lower chick quality and cause economic loss. The main goal of this study was to determine the effect of sealing eggshell cracks with surgical tape on hatching parameters. A total of 3,000 eggs from a 34 weeks old Cobb 500 broiler breeder flock was used in the experiment. Six hundred intact eggs represented a positive control. Other eggs were artificially cracked by the operator either on the first day of storage (1,200 eggs) or on the fourth day of storage (1,200 eggs). In both groups, cracks on 600 eggs were sealed by the adhesive surgical tape while the other 600 eggs remained untreated and were used as a negative control. Within each experimental group, eggs were assigned randomly to 4 setter trays representing 4 replicates of 150 eggs. The egg weight loss during incubation was the highest (P < 0.01) in groups of nonsealed cracked eggs. The egg weight loss in sealed groups was higher compared to the control group (P < 0.01). Percentage of egg contamination was not different between groups. Embryonic mortality was higher in non-sealed groups in all stages of embryonic development (P < 0.01) compared to groups of sealed cracked eggs and the control group. Hatching percentage was significantly lower in non-sealed groups (P < 0.01) compared to sealed groups and positive control. No significant difference in hatching parameters was observed between sealed groups and positive control, indicating that surgical tape can be used for sealing cracks on the eggshell to support embryonic survival.

This study examines the effect of season-related heat stress in dams on mineral status, and hematological profile of their calves. Ten Holstein dams (LowT group) were exposed to the 49-day-long period of low air temperature (5.2 ± 0.5 °C) and ten dams (HighT group) were exposed to a 53-day-long high air temperature (27.4 ± 0.4 °C). The dams' blood samples were taken one hour after parturition, while colostrum was sampled at 2, 14, and 26 h after calving. Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Zn, Mn, and Se concentrations were significantly lower while Cu and Co concentrations were significantly higher at least in two examined colostrum sampling points in HighT group. Calf`s blood samples were taken before 1st colostrum intake, and on days 1, 2, 3, and 7 postnatal. Ca, P, Na, K, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Se, and Co were significantly lower while concentration of Mg was significantly higher in calves that originated from HighT group at least at two examined sampling points. Season affected dam's blood mineral status but the pattern was not always the same as in calves, since Na, K, Cu, and Co were significantly higher in HighT group. Calves that originated from HighT group had significantly lower hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, and MPV values, as well as neutrophils and monocyte counts, while platelets, eosinophils, basophils, and lymphocyte counts were significantly higher. Season-related heat stress leads to a reduction of the most minerals in both dams' colostrum and calves' blood and certain minerals' deficiencies are linked to impaired calves' hematological adaptation.

Introduction: Transverse colon volvulus is an uncommon cause of bowel obstruction in general. Predisposing factors are mental retardation, dysmotility disorders, chronic constipation and congenital megacolon. Case report: We presented transverse colon volvulus in a 16-year-old boy with cerebral palsy. Chronic constipation in neurologicaly impaired patient was a risk factor predisposing to volvulus. The patient was admitted to the hospital with enormous abdominal distension and acute respiratory insufficiency. A boy was emergently taken to the operating room for exploratory laparotomy. During the surgery, a 360º clockwise volvulus of the transverse colon was found. After reduction of volvulus, an enormous transverse colon was resected and colostomy was formed. In the postoperative period, despite the good functioning of stoma and intraabdominal normotension, numerous and long lasting respiratory problems developed. The patient was discharged from our institution after 8 months. Conclusion: Though very rare in pediatric group, the possibility of a transverse colon volvulus must be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute large bowel obstruction.
