RESUMO

Key Clinical Message: Poncet's disease is an acute onset reactive polyarthritis associated with tuberculosis infection. Although uncommon, the diagnosis should be considered among patients presenting with symmetrical polyarthritis in tuberculosis-endemic regions. Abstract: This is a case report of Poncet's disease presenting as bilateral knee and wrist pain associated with swelling. Joint x-rays and immunological assays were normal. A chest x-ray and Gene-Xpert diagnosed tuberculosis. A complete resolution of symptoms was attained following the completion of antituberculous therapy regimen.

RESUMO

Background: Visceral leishmaniasis (also known as Kala-azar) is a systemic parasitic infection with many clinical presentations. The present study assesses the variation in presentations among patients who attended the Tropical Diseases Teaching Hospital (TDTH) in Khartoum, Sudan. Methods: This analytical cross-sectional, hospital-based study was conducted at the TDTH between November 2019 and September 2020. Medical records of patients who presented at the TDTH were reviewed using a structured data extraction checklist. The Chi-square test was used to determine the associations between sociodemographic and clinical presentations of patients. P-value < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: Out of 195 patients, 79.5% were male and 48.2% were <31 years old. Fever was the main clinical presentation (90.2%) while 53.3% presented with weight loss and 72.3% and 39% presented, respectively, with splenomegaly and hepatomegaly. HIV was detected in 4.6% of the patients. RK39 was the main diagnostic test. We found a significant association between the abdominal distention and the age of the patients (P < 0.05) age groups 1120 and 4150 years were more likely to present with abdominal distention than other age groups. Conclusion: There is no exact clinical presentation or routine laboratory findings that are pathognomonic for visceral leishmaniasis; therefore, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any patient with fever, weight loss, and abdominal distention, and among patients with HIV.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new coronavirus strain. The first case of the disease was reported as pneumonia of unknown cause in late December 2019, in Wuhan, China, and then the disease started to spread to other countries. This study aimed to assess the knowledge attitude and practice of the Sudanese population toward COVID-19. METHODS: This cross-sectional online study was conducted among the Sudanese population. The Data was collected by using a self-administered online survey, the survey was in Arabic language and we tested it before sthe distribution. The data collection period was started from 31 March to 3 April 2020. We used an appropriate statistical test and a p-value of <0.05 was considered as statistically significant. RESULT: About 62% of the respondents were females, and 55.1% aged 12-24 years. Our study determined that 68.3% of the study participants had a good knowledge toward COVID-19, and the majority (96.4%) knew that the COVID-19 is transmitted through droplets, while 89.9% of the participants had a positive attitude toward the COVID-19 pandemic. On the other hand, only 48.5% of the participants had a good practice toward COVID-19 pandemic. We also found that good knowledge is significantly associated with good practice. CONCLUSION: Our participants had good knowledge, and positive attitude toward the COVID-19. Our findings revealed that education is positively associated with knowledge, and good level of knowledge is associated with good practice toward COVID-19. Efforts should focus more to raise the awareness among the less educated people.
