RESUMO

The field of planetary system formation relies extensively on our understanding of the aerodynamic interaction between gas and dust in protoplanetary disks. Of particular importance are the mechanisms triggering fluid instabilities and clumping of dust particles into aggregates, and their subsequent inclusion into planetesimals. We introduce the timed Epstein multi-pressure vessel at low accelerations, which is an experimental apparatus for the study of particle dynamics and rarefied gas under micro-gravity conditions. This facility contains three experiments dedicated to studying aerodynamic processes: (i) the development of pressure gradients due to collective particle-gas interaction, (ii) the drag coefficients of dust aggregates with variable particle-gas velocity, and (iii) the effect of dust on the profile of a shear flow and resultant onset of turbulence. The approach is innovative with respect to previous experiments because we access an untouched parameter space in terms of dust particle packing fraction, and Knudsen, Stokes, and Reynolds numbers. The mechanisms investigated are also relevant for our understanding of the emission of dust from active surfaces, such as cometary nuclei, and new experimental data will help interpreting previous datasets (Rosetta) and prepare future spacecraft observations (Comet Interceptor). We report on the performance of the experiments, which has been tested over the course of multiple flight campaigns. The project is now ready to benefit from additional flight campaigns, to cover a wide parameter space. The outcome will be a comprehensive framework to test models and numerical recipes for studying collective dust particle aerodynamics under space-like conditions.

Several models exist to describe the growth and evolution of Earth; however, variables such as the type of precursor materials, extent of mixing, and material loss during accretion are poorly constrained. High-precision palladium-silver isotope data show that Earth's mantle is similar in 107Ag/109Ag to primitive, volatile-rich chondrites, suggesting that Earth accreted a considerable amount of material with high contents of moderately volatile elements. Contradictory evidence from terrestrial chromium and strontium isotope data are reconciled by heterogeneous accretion, which includes a transition from dominantly volatile-depleted to volatile-rich materials with possibly high water contents. The Moon-forming giant impact probably involved the collision with a Mars-like protoplanet that had an oxidized mantle, enriched in moderately volatile elements.

A dynamic reaction cell (DRC) has been used to minimize the formation of metal-argide ions in inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and applied to the determination of Zr and Nb in Cr-rich samples. The formation of ArCr+ species from the plasma gas and the sample matrix was reduced by ion molecule reactions inside a DRC of the ICPMS used. Hydrogen was used as reaction gas, and the efficiency in the reduction of ArCr+ was similar to that of other plasma-based polyatomic ions as reported in an earlier study. The formation of CrOx+ ions is enhanced when the DRC is operated in pressurized mode. Adjustment of the transmission properties of the band-pass quadrupole to reject precursor ions can be achieved without dramatic decrease of sensitivity but with a significant improvement in the signal/background ratio. Measurements in solutions containing concentrations of up to 2 g/L Cr showed that the determination of Nb and Zr is possible in the nanogram per liter range in such a matrix. The limits of detection for Nb and Zr in pure Cr metal have been estimated at 2 ng/g for Nb and 5 ng/g for Zr. Analysis of basaltic reference samples resulted in very good agreement with previously published data.

The protein encoded by the yeast gene SPT14 shows high sequence similarity to the human protein, PIG-A, whose loss of activity is at the origin of the disease paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. The symptoms of this disease are apparently due to a loss of cell surface, glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins. Like PIG-A mutant cells, spt14 mutant cells are defective in GPI anchoring due to a defect in the synthesis of GlcNAc-PI, the first step of GPI synthesis. The spt14 mutant causes several other abnormalities including transcriptional defects and a downregulation of inositolphosphoceramide synthesis. We suggest that these defects are indirect results of the loss of GPI anchoring.
