RESUMO

A young male Austrian tourist, aged 23 years and unvaccinated against rabies, was bitten by a dog in Morocco in July 2004. One month later he was hospitalised in Ceuta with symptoms compatible with rabies. He died on 23 September in an Austrian hospital after a diagnosis of rabies was confirmed by FAT, IHC and RT-PCR (including sequencing) of the neck skin and the RT-PCR (including sequencing) of the pharyngeal swab. This Austrian case of laboratory confirmed rabies highlights the urgent need for reinforcement of the international recommendations for travel vaccinations.

RESUMO

In three Austrian rabbit units (two in the west, one in the east) heavy losses occurred in April/May 1989. The clinical course (deaths in adult animals, haemorrhagic diathesis) of the disease was indicative for an infection with the RHD-virus. Necropsy confirmed the suggestive clinical diagnosis as bleeding of the nostrils, hyperaemia in the respiratory tract, spleen tumor, partly decolorized livers, hyperaemia of kidneys with rare petechias could be observed. Histologic examination revealed centrolobular liver necrosis, lung bleeding and edema, tumor of spleen and atrophy of spleen follicles. Rabbits infected with organ suspensions died within 48 hours. The organ suspensions and the suspensions of the already necropsied animals showed a haemagglutination titer for above 1:100. This reaction could be inhibited with a specific RHD-antiserum. The intramuscular application of a RHD-reference strain in one hare, two wild rabbits and a rabbit did not induce clinical disease or death of the leporids during a six week observation period. The rabbit died within 48 hours post infection. However the hare and wild rabbits showed high antibody titers by ELISA at the end of the observation period. Before infection the two wild rabbits were serologically negative.

RESUMO

In order to investigate the sensibility of cultured tumor cells to ozone and irradiation primary tissue cultures from one undifferentiated non-classified ovarian carcinoma, two solid adenocarcinomas of the ovary and one endometrial carcinoma were established. Cultivation was performed according to standard techniques involving the stem cell assay in soft agar as well as the monolayer technique in liquid nutrient media. The type of culture system did not influence the sensitivity of the culture cells to ozone and/or irradiation. Ozone treatment was performed with three different Ozone concentrations (0.03 ppm, 0.1 ppm, 0.3 ppm). Irradiation was done with 100 rd Ra226, Ir192 or Co60. A control experiment showed that the proliferative tendency of benign cells (skin fibroblasts) was not inhibited by the three ozone concentrations used in this study. Ra226 and even the combination of ozone and Radium did not influence the proliferative activity of these benign cells. Ir192 and Co60 were cytotoxic to benign as well as to carcinoma cells. Cultivated cells from endometrial carcinoma resisted to ozone treatment as well as to Ra226 (but they were destroyed by Ir119 and Co60). After pretreatment with ozone (0.1 ppm), Ra226 treatment of endometrial carcinoma cells induced a cytostatic effect implying that no cell divisions were observed after irradiation and the cells lysed within two weeks after irradiation. For the three ovarian carcinoma cell lines analysed in this study ozone treatment had a cytostatic effect even at the lowest concentration (0.03 ppm), with the two higher ozone concentrations a cytotoxic effect could be induced in ovarian carcinoma cells. Exclusive treatment with Ra226 induced a cytostatic effect, but it was cytotoxic after combination with ozone treatment of the lowest concentration (Ir192 and Co60 were cytotoxic in all cases). Our investigation confirmed the radiosensitizing effect of ozone treatment. Furthermore it was shown that exclusive ozone treatment even without combined irradiation displayed a selective cytotoxic action at the ovarian carcinoma cells.

RESUMO

In the ampulla roof of the wave-like extending horse rectum the muscular coat is only weakly developed as a deltoid-shaped tuna muscularis area, thus forming a place of minor resistance. With regard to the degree of development of the muscular coat a rectal ampulla with a stable form and strong muscles can be distinguished from an ampulla with a labile form and weak muscles. The rupture of the intestinal wall in this region in the case of rupture-experiments as well as the frequent occurrence of diverticula reveals this area as being a place of minor resistance which requires extreme caution during rectal examination. The forensic judgement of a rectal perforation has to be based on detailed pathoanatomical investigations. If the rules of veterinary art had been neglected, the proof of blamelessness for the investigator is being out of consideration. If all rules of veterinary art, however, had fully been observed during rectal exploration, the proof of blamelessness for the investigator is very difficult to be obtained, when a perforation or a rupture has resulted. Only if the rupture is located in the dorsal part of the rectum, there exists the possibility, that it is a spontaneous one, if anatomical conditions, thickness of the muscular coat or the presence of diverticula do support this.

RESUMO

In the recent past criticism has been voiced with regard to the efficacy and possible side effects of corticosteroid prophylaxis of fetal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Apparently the efficacy of this treatment has been over-estimated and the spectrum of possible side effects has not received enough critical attention. In view of the multiple indications that the fetal metabolism, above all, may be altered by this type of therapy, it seems necessary to search for other methods of surfactant stimulation. This paper presents the first clinical study on the use of carnitine (4 g for 5 days in combination with twice 8 mg beta-methasone versus twice 8 mg betamethasone alone). The patients on combination therapy showed a more marked increase in surfactant content of the amniotic fluid. Lung compliance determination in infants born within 72 hours of completion of therapy also revealed better results in the combination therapy group. There were also fewer clinically demonstrable RDS cases in this group. More research will be necessary to definitely establish the value of this new form of therapy.
