RESUMO

We report the experimental demonstration of efficient interaction of multi-kilo-electron-volt heralded x-ray photons with a beam splitter. The measured heralded photon rate at the outputs of the beam splitter is about 0.01 counts/s which is comparable to the rate in the absence of the beam splitter. We use this beam splitter together with photon number and photon energy resolving detectors to show directly that when a single x-ray photon interacts with a beam splitter it can only be detected at either of the ports of the beam splitter but not at both simultaneously, leading to a strong anticorrelation between the detection events at the two output ports. Our experiment demonstrates the major advantage of x rays for quantum optics-the possibility to observe experimental results with high fidelity and with negligible background.

RESUMO

We demonstrate computational ghost imaging at X-ray wavelengths with only one single-pixel detector. We show that, by using a known designed mask as a diffuser that induces intensity fluctuations in the probe beam, it is possible to compute the propagation of the electromagnetic field in the absence of the investigated object. We correlate these calculations with the measured data when the object is present in order to reconstruct the images of 50 µm and 80 µm slits. Our results open the possibilities for X-ray high-resolution imaging with partially coherent X-ray sources and can lead to a powerful tool for X-ray three-dimensional imaging.

RESUMO

We present the observation of peculiar nonmonotonic photon energy dependencies of the count rates and of the rocking curves of parametric down-conversion of x rays into ultraviolet far from any atomic resonances. The observations cannot be explained by models that consider only atomic or bond charge responses and suggest that collective phenomena contribute to the effect. We propose an interpretation that includes nonlinear interactions with plasmons, which can explain the existence of peaks in this energy range. Our Letter implies that nonlinear interactions between x rays and either ultraviolet or visible radiation can be utilized as a powerful atomic-scale probe for collective effects in solids.

RESUMO

We describe an experiment demonstrating ghost imaging with an incoherent low brightness X-ray tube source. We reconstruct the images of 10 µm and 100 µm slits with very high contrast. Our results advance the possibilities that the high-resolution method of ghost diffraction will be utilized with tabletop X-ray sources.

RESUMO

We report the observation of parametrically down-converted x-ray signal photons at photon energies that correspond to idler photons at optical wavelengths. The count-rate dependence on the angles of the input beam and of the detector and on the slit sizes agrees with theory within the experimental uncertainties. The nonlinear susceptibility, which we calculated from the measured efficiencies, is comparable to the nonlinear susceptibility evaluated from the measurements of x-ray and optical wave mixing. The results of the present Letter advance the development of a spectroscopy method for probing valence-electron charges and the microscopic optical response of crystals with atomic-scale resolution.

RESUMO

The Swiss winter bread wheat cv. 'Forno' has a highly effective, durable and quantitative leaf rust ( Puccinia triticina Eriks.) resistance which is associated with leaf tip necrosis (LTN). We studied 240 single seed descent lines of an 'ArinaxForno' F(5:7 )population to identify and map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for leaf rust resistance and LTN. Percentage of infected leaf area (%) and the response to infection (RI) were evaluated in seven field trials and were transformed to the area under the disease progress curves (AUDPC). Using composite interval mapping and LOD >4.4, we identified eight chromosomal regions specifically associated with resistance. The largest and most consistent leaf rust resistance locus was identified on the short arm of chromosome 7D (32.6% of variance explained for AUDPC_% and 42.6% for AUDPC_RI) together with the major QTL for LTN ( R(2)=55.6%) in the same chromosomal region as Lr34 ( Xgwm295). A second major leaf rust resistance QTL ( R(2)=28% and 31.5%, respectively) was located on chromosome arm 1BS close to Xgwm604 and was not associated with LTN. Additional minor QTLs for LTN (2DL, 3DL, 4BS and 5AL) and leaf rust resistance were identified. These latter QTLs might correspond to the leaf rust resistance genes Lr2 or Lr22 (2DS) and Lr14a (7BL).

RESUMO

Data maintained by medical insurance plans can be used to evaluate the incidence of death and nonfatal complications following medical care, to test hypotheses about the outcomes of care, and to identify hospitals with unusually high or low death rates. These uses are illustrated for prostatectomy, utilizing claims data from the Maine Medicare and Manitoba Health Services Commission files. The study shows important differences in death rates between individual hospitals and higher cumulative probability of reoperation following transurethral compared with open prostatectomy. The advantages of claims data are low cost, ease of patient follow-up over long periods, and the absence of reporting bias. The limitations are the adequacy of the data used to control for patient comorbidity and the lack of outcome information on functional status. The effective use of claims data for monitoring requires the active participation of physicians in improving the data base and interpreting the findings.

RESUMO

Among 135 overweight subjects, we conducted a three-month randomized controlled trial of two sets of dietary advice, each providing approximately 1,000 calories per day but differing in fiber, carbohydrate, and fat content. Information on weight and eating habits, as well as measures of lipoprotein and glucose metabolism were obtained at entry and one and three months later. We found that dieters given low carbohydrate/low fiber dietary advice tended to lose more weight than those given a higher carbohydrate/higher fiber regimen (5.0 vs 3.7 kg on average at three months). This pattern was particularly marked among women, and among participants who were under age 40 or of lower social class. There were no differences between the diet groups in the proportion complaining of hunger but, in general, members of the low carbohydrate group complained of more problems in dieting. There were only minor differences in the serum lipoprotein patterns during the diet period. In view of these results, we believe previous claims of the benefits of fiber for weight loss may have been overstated.
