RESUMO

A four-year-old, 1·3-kg entire male Holland Lop pet rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was presented with a two-day history of bilateral epiphora and blepharospasm. Fluorescein staining revealed bilateral medio-ventral corneal ulceration. Initial topical treatment included ophthalmic broad-spectrum antibiotics and artificial tear solutions. Over a six-month period, antibiotics were changed based on corneal culture and sensitivity test results, and periodic corneal debridement was performed. With little to no improvement, and recurrence of the previous clinical signs, surgical intervention was considered but withheld because of individual pet consideration and owner's reluctance. Hydrophilic contact lenses were placed for corneal support but failed and caused a severe ocular response. Corneal collagen shields were placed bilaterally in order to promote corneal healing. Recheck examination performed seven days after placement revealed complete resolution of the ulcer in one eye and major reduction of the corneal ulcer in the contra-lateral eye.

RESUMO

A retrobulbar abscess/cellulitis occurred in a Yorkshire Terrier dog. The clinical signs were exophthalmos, prolapsed nictitating membrane and purulent ocular discharge. Ultrasonography showed a marked soft tissue swelling of the retrobulbar tissues as well as echogenic parallel lines between the globe and the medial orbital rim. Surgical exploration of the orbit was performed and no foreign body was found. The pterygopalatine fossa was incised and therapeutic retrobulbar drainage attempted. A drain was placed to encourage ventral drainage of the abscess. Anaerobic cultures revealed heavy growth of gram negative rods (prevotella bivia and prevotella buccae were isolated). Recovery was successful but subsequent treatment for keratoconjunctivitis sicca was necessary. A full recovery of tear production occurred after several weeks.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a combined cycloablative and gonioimplantation technique for treatment of glaucoma in dogs. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 18 adult dogs with glaucoma. PROCEDURE: Medical records of dogs that received a valved gonioimplant and a cyclodestructive procedure (cyclocryoablation or diode laser cyclophotocoagulation) during a 6-year period were reviewed. Retention of vision and intraocular pressure control were assessed, as well as number and nature of complications. RESULTS: 19 eyes of 18 dogs received a valved gonioimplant and either cyclocryoablation (n = 12) or diode laser cyclophotocoagulation (7). At > or = 1 year after surgery, 11 of 19 eyes had vision and 14 of 19 eyes had intraocular pressure < 25 mm Hg. Two dogs (2 eyes) were lost to follow-up 3 and 6 months after surgery. Despite the alternative route for aqueous humor flow created by the gonioimplant, 7 eyes had increased intraocular pressure (27 to 61 mm Hg) < 24 hours after surgery. Other complications included excessive intraocular fibrin, focal retinal detachment, corneal ulcer, retinal hemorrhage, cataract, and implant migration. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Combined cycloablation and gonioimplantation appears to be a promising technique for retention of vision and control of intraocular pressure in dogs with glaucoma.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether intracameral injection of carbachol at the completion of phacoemulsification in dogs would prevent the increase in intraocular pressure (i.o.p) that can develop during the first 24 hours after surgery. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. ANIMALS: 32 adult dogs undergoing elective unilateral or bilateral phacoemulsification. PROCEDURE: Dogs were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups with 8 dogs/group: phacoemulsification and intracameral administration of 0.5 ml of 0.01% carbachol at the end of surgery; phacoemulsification, intraocular lens implantation, and intracameral administration of 0.5 ml of 0.01% carbachol; phacoemulsification and intracameral administration of 0.5 ml of balanced salt solution; and phacoemulsification, intraocular lens implantation, and intracameral administration of 0.5 ml of balanced salt solution. Intraocular pressure was measured at 3 and 6 hours and the morning after surgery. Aqueous flare was also measured 6 hours and the morning after surgery. RESULTS: None of the dogs treated with carbachol developed postoperative ocular hypertension (i.e., IOP > 27 mm of Hg), whereas 12 of 16 control dogs had ocular hypertension 3 hours after surgery. Intraocular pressure 3 hours after surgery was not significantly associated with phacoemulsification time or phacoemulsification power or with whether the dog received an intraocular lens implant. Severity of aqueous flare was similar for treated and control dogs. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Results suggested that intracameral administration of 0.01% carbachol at the end of surgery was a safe and efficacious method of preventing the postoperative increase in IOP associated with phacoemulsification in dogs.

RESUMO

Tear and liver copper concentrations from 6 clinically healthy adult mixed-breed ewes were measured by Atomic Absorption Electrothermal Atomization (graphite furnace) Spectrometry and Flame Absorption Spectrometry, respectively, 7 times over 227 d to determine if their tears contained copper and if so, whether tear copper concentrations could reliably predict liver copper concentrations. To produce changes in liver copper concentration, the diet was supplemented with copper at concentrations that increased from 23 mg to 45 mg Cu/kg feed/day/sheep during the study. This regimen raised liver copper for all sheep to potentially toxic hepatic tissue concentration of greater than 500 mg/kg dry (DM) matter (tissue). The results of the study showed that copper was present in the tears of all sheep. The mean tear copper concentration showed a positive correlation with liver copper concentration (P = 0.003), increasing from 0.07 mg/kg DM at the start to 0.44 mg/kg DM at the end of the study, but could not reliably predict liver copper concentration (R2 = 0.222).

RESUMO

B-scan ultrasonography of the right eye of a 6-year-old sexually intact female mixed-breed dog revealed complete retinal detachment and a semiconical solid mass of tissue that projected from the area of the optic disc into the vitreal space subretinally. Microscopic examination of an ultrasound guided fine-needle aspirate of the mass revealed a moderate number of mildly pleomorphic melanocytes. Histologic examination of the excised globe revealed a large, heavily pigmented intraocular neoplastic mass in the choroid around the optic nerve, bulging into the subretinal space. The histologic diagnosis was benign choroidal melanoma, with invasion into the intraocular portion of the optic nerve. In dogs, tumors of melanocytic origin are the most common primary ocular neoplasm, but primary choroidal melanocytic neoplasms are the rarest of this type.

RESUMO

The fungal organism Pseudallescheria boydii was isolated from the cornea of a Quarter Horse with ulcerative keratitis. Despite aggressive hourly medication through a subpalpebral lavage system, with drugs including miconazole and natamycin, the cornea developed a stromal abscess. Orbital exenteration was performed after 3 weeks. The fungal isolate was later determined to be resistant to all 8 antifungal drugs tested. Microscopic examination of the cornea revealed fungal hyphae throughout the corneal stroma and penetrating the Descemet membrane. Pseudallescheria boydii has not been implicated previously as a cause of keratomycosis in horses or in other domestic animals, although cases in human beings have been described.

RESUMO

A 7-year-old female mixed-breed dog with an undifferentiated sarcoma of the orbit was treated for 7 months with doxorubicin hydrochloride. Though remission was achieved, the dog died of acute heart failure.
