RESUMO

A new concept for temporal gating of synchrotron X-ray pulses based on laser-induced thermal transient gratings is presented. First experimental tests of the concept yield a diffraction efficiency of 0.18%; however, the calculations indicate a theoretical efficiency and contrast of >30% and 10-5, respectively. The full efficiency of the pulse picker has not been reached yet due to a long-range thermal deformation of the sample after absorption of the excitation laser. This method can be implemented in a broad spectral range (100 eV to 20 keV) and is only minimally invasive to an existing setup.

RESUMO

An experimental technique that allows faster assessment of out-of-plane strain dynamics of thin film heterostructures via x-ray diffraction is presented. In contrast to conventional high-speed reciprocal space-mapping setups, our approach reduces the measurement time drastically due to a fixed measurement geometry with a position-sensitive detector. This means that neither the incident (ω) nor the exit ( 2 θ ) diffraction angle is scanned during the strain assessment via x-ray diffraction. Shifts of diffraction peaks on the fixed x-ray area detector originate from an out-of-plane strain within the sample. Quantitative strain assessment requires the determination of a factor relating the observed shift to the change in the reciprocal lattice vector. The factor depends only on the widths of the peak along certain directions in reciprocal space, the diffraction angle of the studied reflection, and the resolution of the instrumental setup. We provide a full theoretical explanation and exemplify the concept with picosecond strain dynamics of a thin layer of NbO2.

RESUMO

X-ray reflectivity measurements of femtosecond laser-induced transient gratings (TG) are applied to demonstrate the spatiotemporal coherent control of thermally induced surface deformations on ultrafast time scales. Using grazing incidence x-ray diffraction we unambiguously measure the amplitude of transient surface deformations with sub-Å resolution. Understanding the dynamics of femtosecond TG excitations in terms of superposition of acoustic and thermal gratings makes it possible to develop new ways of coherent control in x-ray diffraction experiments. Being the dominant source of TG signal, the long-living thermal grating with spatial period Λ can be canceled by a second, time-delayed TG excitation shifted by Λ/2. The ultimate speed limits of such an ultrafast x-ray shutter are inferred from the detailed analysis of thermal and acoustic dynamics in TG experiments.

RESUMO

X-ray diffraction from films consisting of layers with different thicknesses, structures and chemical contents is analysed. The disorder is described by probabilities for different sequences of layers. Closed analytical expressions for the diffracted X-ray intensity are obtained when the layers form a stationary Markov chain. The proposed model is applied to the diffraction data from epitaxial sodium bismuth titanate thin films with Aurivillius structure possessing such one-dimensional disorder. In this case, the disorder is caused by a random stacking of three and four perovskite units separated by bismuth oxide interlayers. The results of analytical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental data and indicate that the incorporation of sodium in the Bi(4)Ti(3)O(12) phase causes the formation of a fourth perovskite unit.

RESUMO

In a 5-year survey regarding its prevalence and importance in five German state veterinary laboratories Cryptosporidium was diagnosed annually in 19-36% of faecal samples either submitted to the laboratories or taken post mortem. In approximately half of the cases no other enteropathogens were detected. However, only 73% of 30 laboratories participating in a questionnaire survey routinely tested for this parasite, and the majority of researchers considered cryptosporidiosis to be of minor importance. In a placebo-controlled field study 152 suckling calves were treated daily against cryptosporidiosis either with sulfadimidine or with halofuginone (Halocur, Intervet) over 1 week. Treatment by oral drench started at the onset of diarrhoea in the herd. Oocyst excretion, faecal consistency and health status were recorded five times for a 3-week period. Oocyst excretion peaked 7-14 days in the placebo group after the onset of diarrhoea, and during that period prevalence and intensity of excretion were significantly lower in the halofuginone-treated group compared to the sulfadimidine and the placebo control groups. The health status (diarrhoea, dehydration) declined in all groups but was significantly (P<0.05-0.001) better in the halofuginone group in the first 2 weeks. Halofuginone effectively (P<0.05-0.001) reduced oocyst excretion and improved the health status of the treated animals, while sulfadimidine had no effect against Cryptosporidium.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: A hyperbaric environment may influence lactate metabolism due to hyperoxia affecting biochemical pathways. The purpose of our study was to determine the blood lactate levels occurring at high workloads in a sample of professional divers under simulated caisson conditions. The ambient air pressure was equivalent to a diving depth of 30 m of seawater (400 kPa). METHODS: A total of 23 healthy male subjects performed graded bicycle exercise in a dry hyperbaric chamber up to a maximum of 3.5 W kg(-1) body weight at normal (100 kPa) and elevated ambient air pressure (400 kPa). The blood lactate level and the heart rate were measured. RESULTS: In comparison with control conditions, the heart rate and the peripheral blood lactate level were significantly lower at depth for all workloads. CONCLUSIONS: The differences between the normobaric and hyperbaric lactate values may be explained by an overall improvement in lactate metabolism at elevated ambient pressure, especially in the working muscles and the organs responsible for the lactate reduction, i.e., the liver. The reduced heart rate may be an effect of the improved tissue oxygen supply at depth.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have demonstrated a significant reduction of cardiac index shortly after transmyocardial laser revascularization in patients with low ejection fraction. We analyzed the influence of transmyocardial laser revascularization on healthy myocardium in pigs. METHODS: Carbon dioxide channels were created in 20 pigs which were observed for 6 hours. Ten pigs received one laser channel and ten pigs two laser channels per cm2 in the left anterior descending artery region. Seven pigs served as controls. Perfusion (microspheres), function, histochemical, and histologic assessments were subsequently performed. RESULTS: A significant deterioration of left ventricular stroke work index was observed shortly after transmyocardial laser revascularization in both laser groups (p < 0.05). After 6 hours the left ventricular stroke work index did not increase and showed significantly reduced values at rest (p < 0.05) and during stress in the laser groups (p < 0.01). Normal regional perfusion, small ischemic and necrotic areas, open laser channels in the left anterior descending artery region and significantly increased myocardial water content were observed in the laser groups (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Carbon dioxide laser channels significantly decrease global heart function shortly after transmyocardial laser revascularization in healthy porcine myocardium. This myocardial tissue showed no recovery 6 hours postoperatively.

RESUMO

Histologic examination of the human myocardium has been performed several days, weeks, and months after transmyocardial laser revascularization. We performed microscopic examinations 2 hours postoperatively. In addition to the patent channel (diameter, 1 mm) and a 1-to 2-mm rim of necrosis, a 1- to 3-mm zone of myofibrillary degeneration was found. This additional reversible injury immediately after transmyocardial laser revascularization could explain the higher mortality rate in patients with reduced left ventricular function.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and immunoscintigraphy (IS) for detection of bone marrow infiltration in malignant lymphoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 32 patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD) or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), MRI of the axial skeleton and whole-body IS using technetium-99m (99mTc)-labeled monoclonal antibodies were reviewed and compared with iliac crest biopsies. Criterion for marrow infiltration was a positive biopsy or concordant positive results of MRI and IS. RESULTS: In 16 patients (50%), MRI, IS, and iliac crest biopsies were negative for marrow infiltration. Iliac crest biopsy showed infiltration in only four patients (13%). Infiltration was missed in two of 32 patients with IS and in one patient with MRI. In one additional patient, MRI was false-positive because of pelvic hematopoietic hyperplasia. A subset of nine patients (28%) with negative biopsies had bone marrow involvement according to MRI and IS with identical location and pattern of infiltration. In eight of these nine patients, diagnostic imaging indicated marrow involvement only in noncrest marrow. Subsequent biopsy confirmed infiltration in five patients. The clinical course suggested true-positive imaging results in the remaining four patients. Two patients (6%) remained equivocal. Overall concordance of MRI and IS for marrow infiltration was 88% (28 of 32 patients). CONCLUSION: Diagnostic imaging is essential for optimal staging in malignant lymphoma, as blind biopsies appear to have low sensitivity for bone marrow infiltration because of frequent involvement in noncrest marrow. both imaging modalities show a high rate of detection of bone marrow infiltration.

RESUMO

Angiosarcoma of the liver was diagnosed at autopsy in a 50 year old female with insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus. Over the course of 27 years, the patient received 27 l of Insulin-preparations applied subcutaneously and by an intraperitoneal pump-system. The preparations contained 20 g phenol. Known carcinogens for angiosarcoma of the liver-thorotrast, monovinylchloride or arsenic-were excluded. Phenol is a well known carcinogen of the skin and its tumor-promoting potential has been demonstrated in vitro. We suggest phenol as a potential aetiologic factor for angiosarcoma of the liver.
