RESUMO

In recent years, researchers have increasingly directed their focus toward the biomedical field, driven by the goal of engineering polymer systems that possess a unique combination of both electrical conductivity and biodegradability. This convergence of properties holds significant promise, as it addresses a fundamental requirement for biomedical applications: compatibility with biological environments. These polymer systems are viewed as auspicious biomaterials, precisely because they meet this critical criterion. Beyond their biodegradability, these materials offer a range of advantageous characteristics. Their exceptional processability enables facile fabrication into various forms, and their chemical stability ensures reliability in diverse physiological conditions. Moreover, their low production costs make them economically viable options for large-scale applications. Notably, their intrinsic electrical conductivity further distinguishes them, opening up possibilities for applications that demand such functionality. As the focus of this review, a survey into the use of biodegradable conducting polymers in tissue engineering, biomedical implants, and antibacterial applications is conducted.

The gyroid structure is a bio-inspired structure that was discovered in butterfly wings. The geometric design of the gyroid structure in butterfly wings offers a unique combination of strength and flexibility. This study investigated sandwich panels consisting of a 3D-printed gyroid structure core and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) facing skin. A filament fused fabrication 3D printer machine was used to print the gyroid cores with three different relative densities, namely 10%, 15%, and 20%. Polylactic acid (PLA) was used as the printing material for the gyroid. The gyroid structure was then sandwiched and joined by an epoxy resin between CFRP laminates. Polyurethane foam (PUF) was filled into the gyroid core to fill the cavity on the core for another set of samples. Flexural and compression tests were performed on the samples to investigate the mechanical behavior of the sandwiches. Moreover, the two-parameter Weibull distribution was used to evaluate the results statistically. As a result, the sandwich-specific facing stress and core shear strength from the three-point bending test of the composites increased with the increase in sandwich density. Core density controls the flexural characteristics of the sandwich. Adding PUF improves the deflection at the maximum stress and the sustained load after fracture of the sandwich. Compression strength, modulus, and energy absorbed by gyroid core sandwiches and their specific properties are higher than the PUF-filled gyroid core sandwiches at equal sandwich density.

This study aims to develop suitable formulations of geopolymer concrete (GPC) by varying the percentages of the geopolymer with aggregates and evaluating the performances in thermal and mechanical properties of palm kernel shell ash (PKSA)-GPC compared to rice husk ash (RHA)-GPC and ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPCC). Preliminary tests were conducted to select the best mix design ratios before casting the specimens. Then, the performance of the PKSA-GPC, RHA-GPC and OPCC specimens was evaluated based on their thermal performance and drying shrinkage. The mix designs of PKSA-GPC 70:30, PKSA-GPC 60:40, PKSA-GPC 50:50 and PKSA-GPC 66.6:33.3 were found to produce an acceptable consistency, rheological and thixotropic behaviour for the development of the GPC. PKSA-GPC showed a better thermal performance than the RHA-GPC and OPCC due to their strong and dense intumescent layers and slow temperature increment upon exposure to a high flame temperature from ambient temperature to 169 °C. The low molar ratio of the Si/Al present in the PKSA-GPC created a thermally stable intumescent layer. In the drying shrinkage test, PKSA-GPC 60:40 and RHA-GPC 60:40 shared an equal drying shrinkage performance (5.040%) compared to the OPCC (8.996%). It was observed that microcrack formation could significantly contribute to the high shrinkage in the PKSA-GPC 50:50 and RHA-GPC 70:30 specimens. The findings of this study show that PKSA could be incorporated into GPC as a fire-retardant material due to its capability of prolonging the spread of fire upon ignition and acting as an alternative to the conventional OPCC.

Composite sandwich structures are extensively used in aircraft applications. Aircraft components are required to be robust and lightweight. Sandwich structures made of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer as the facing sheets and milled-glass-fiber-reinforced rigid polyurethane foam with a different glass fiber content as the core structure were prepared. The influence of glass fiber content in the foam on the sandwich structure's mechanical properties was investigated. Flexural and compression tests were performed to assess the mechanical properties of the sandwich structures. Visual inspection and an optical microscope were used to observe the morphology of the polyurethane composite foams at different contents. From the flexural test, the force, facing stress and core shear stress improved with the increase in the milled fiber loading with the maximum increase at 10 wt.% loading and then a drop. Meanwhile, the compression modulus and strength increased up to 20 wt.% loadings and then dropped subsequently. The increase in the polyurethane composite foam's compression strength shifted the bending load's failure type from facing crack failure into core shear failure. The loadings range of 8-10 wt.% showed a transitional of the bending loading failure type. The density of the foams increased with the increase in milled glass fiber loading. At 10 wt.% loading, the density increased by 20%, and it increased by 47% at 30 wt.% loading. At 30 wt% loading, the optical microscope images of the foam showed wall thinning and broken walls that were responsible for the drop in the mechanical properties of the sandwich.

Fiber-reinforced plastic composites are sensitive to holes, as they cut the main load-carrying member in the composite (fibers) and they induce out-of-plane stresses. In this study, we demonstrated notch sensitivity enhancement in a hybrid carbon/epoxy (CFRP) composite with a Kevlar core sandwich compared to monotonic CFRP and Kevlar composites. Open-hole tensile samples were cut using waterjet cutting at different width to diameter ratios and tested under tensile loading. We performed an open-hole tension (OHT) test to characterize the notch sensitivity of the composites via the comparison of the open-hole tensile strength and strain as well as the damage propagation (as monitored via CT scan). The results showed that hybrid laminate has lower notch sensitivity than CFRP and KFRP laminates because the strength reduction rate with hole size was lower. Moreover, this laminate showed no reduction in the failure strain by increasing the hole size up to 12 mm. At w/d = 6, the lowest drop in strength showed by the hybrid laminate was 65.4%, followed by the CFRP and KFRP laminates with 63.5% and 56.1%, respectively. For the specific strength, the hybrid laminate showed a 7% and 9% higher value as compared with CFRP and KFRP laminates, respectively. The enhancement in notch sensitivity was due to its progressive damage mode, which was initiated via delamination at the Kevlar-carbon interface, followed by matrix cracking and fiber breakage in the core layers. Finally, matrix cracking and fiber breakage occurred in the CFRP face sheet layers. The specific strength (normalized strength and strain to density) and strain were larger for the hybrid than the CFRP and KFRP laminates due to the lower density of Kevlar fibers and the progressive damage modes which delayed the final failure of the hybrid composite.

The current study uses three different pin eccentricities (e) and six different welding speeds to investigate the impact of pin eccentricity on friction stir welding (FSW) of AA5754-H24. To simulate and forecast the impact of (e) and welding speed on the mechanical properties of friction stir welded joints for (FSWed) AA5754-H24, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed. The input parameters for the model in this work are welding speed (WS) and tool pin eccentricity (e). The outputs of the developed ANN model include the mechanical properties of FSW AA5754-H24 (ultimate tensile strength, elongation, hardness of the thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ), and hardness of the weld nugget zone (NG)). The ANN model yielded a satisfactory performance. The model has been used to predict the mechanical properties of the FSW AA5754 aluminum alloy as a function of TPE and WS with excellent reliability. Experimentally, the tensile strength is increased by increasing both the (e) and the speed, which was already captured from the ANN predictions. The R2 values are higher than 0.97 for all the predictions, reflecting the output quality.

This paper aims to understand the aerodynamic performance of a bio-inspired flapping-wing model using the dwarf Kingfisher wing as the bionic reference. The paper demonstrates the numerical investigation of the Kingfisher-inspired flapping-wing followed by experimental validation to comprehend the results fully and examine the aerodynamic characteristics at a flight velocity of 4.4 m/s, with wingbeat frequencies of 11 Hz, 16 Hz, and 21 Hz, at various angles of rotation ranging from 0° to 20° for each stroke cycle. The motivation to study the performance at low speed is based on lift generation as a challenge at low speed as per quasi-steady theory. The temporal evolution of the mean force coefficients has been plotted for various angles of rotation. The results show amplification of the maximum value for the cycle average lift and drag coefficient as the rotation angle increases. The history of vertical force and the flow patterns around the wing is captured in a full cycle with asymmetric lift development in a single stroke cycle. It is observed from the results that the downstroke generates more lift force in magnitude compared to the upstroke. In addition to the rotation angle, lift asymmetry is also affected by wing-wake interaction. Experimental results reveal that there is a stable leading-edge vortex developed in the downstroke, which sheds during the upstroke. An optimum lift and thrust flapping flight can be achieved, with a lift coefficient of 3.45 at 12°. The experimental and parametric study results also reveal the importance of passive rotation in wings for aerodynamic performance and wing flexibility as an important factor for lift generation.

Despite the growing popularity of rice husk ash (RHA) in various applications, limited research has been devoted to identify the influence of silica content in RHA on the intumescent properties. The present work aims to introduce a novel and economical geopolymer hybrid fire retardant coating by utilizing the use of RHA. The silica from Rice husk (RH) was extracted using distilled water and hydrochloric acid as leaching agents and subjected to pyrolysis treatment. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis indicated that RH that underwent HCl pre-treatment at 600 °C for one hour produced a high purity amorphous silica content of 93.92%. XRD measurements revealed that HCl pretreatment increased the crystallization temperature of RHA to 1000 °C and retained the amorphous state of silica for 2 h. In a fire resistance test, temperature at the equilibrium and time taken to reach 200 °C for sample S3 (93.92% wt. silica) showed 5.83% and 3.48% improvement compared to sample S1 (87.49% wt. silica). The microstructure analysis showed that sample S1 possessed bigger pores on the coating surface while an increment in silica content in sample S3 produced a dense foam structure. Results from a fire resistance test were supported by the Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis of the sample. The oxygen-to-carbon ratio of S1 and S3 coating samples were 1.695 and 1.622 respectively, which indicated that lower oxygen-to-carbon ratio in sample S3 coating resulted in better anti-oxidant properties. Interestingly, the increment of SiO2 content in RHA efficiently improved the compactness of the char layer, which resulted in a relatively higher fire-retardant efficiency. RHA proved to be a promising environmentally friendly strategy to replace halogenated fire retardant materials.

In this study, different configurations of epoxy composite laminates that contained thin plies were prepared and characterised for sudden impact load bearing applications. The primary aim of this investigation was to develop a hybrid epoxy-based thin ply composite for aerospace and automotive applications that would be tolerant of high impacts. The impact properties of the selected configurations were investigated both experimentally and numerically under low-velocity Charpy impact loading conditions. Furthermore, any damage to the laminates was evaluated with an emphasis on the identification of dominant damage mechanisms and locations. This included a comparison between the laminates that were made from traditional plies and the thin ply laminates in terms of their absorbed energy and failure modes. The results revealed that the integration of thin plies into normal ply had a major effect on the amount of absorbed energy under flatwise conditions: up to 8.7 J at a cut-off angle of 90°. However, edgewise conditions produced a maximum observed energy of 10.0 J for the thin plies that were surrounded by normal plies (Plate 3). The damage assessments showed the increased damage resistance of the hybrid thin ply composites due to their uniform stress distribution. The traditional ply composites incurred large deformations from the impact loads. Moreover, it was noted that delamination formed in the middle regions of the traditional plies. The FEM model analysis revealed that it was capable of accurately predicting the absorbed energy for different configurations of composites, which were prepared and analysed experimentally. Both the experimental and numerical values were very similar to each other. These impact damage assessments improved the thin ply composites so that they could be used as working materials for applications that are prone to high loads, such as the aerospace, defence, automotive and structural industries.

With the development of spread-tow, thin-ply technology, ultra-thin composite laminates could be produced. Composite bolted joints are commonly used on aircraft's load-bearing structures and are considered the main cause of stress concentration. The aim of this research is to investigate the bolted joint behavior of composite laminates that combine thin-plies and conventional thick-plies in a predetermined stacking sequence. The impact of thin-ply placement within the stack on bearing strength, including the onset of damages, is examined. The work involves mechanical tests and fractographic activities to understand the damage mechanisms of the plies and their interactions, and its reflections on the bearing load capacity of the joint for double-lap bolted joints. The results showed an improvement in the bearing strength of up to 19% by inserting the thin-plies inside the laminate. The visual examination of the specimens showed a bearing damage mode for all the tested specimens. The computed tomography scans showed damage mechanisms that mostly occurred with the normal plies, rather than breaking the thin-plies. For the specimens of traditional plies, delaminations were noticed at most of the interfaces. For the one with a block of thin-plies in the middle, all the delaminations were forced to the surface layers with an extra large size. Forspecimens with distributed thin-plies, a higher number of smaller delaminations was recognized.

Plastics are unavoidable at this times, putting our planet in danger. The Prosopis juliflora (PJ) thorns are collected, processed, and powdered. The mechanical characteristics of these powders are examined when combined with polymer composites. Pores are the main cause of moisture input, hence using powder filler materials reduces the number of pores in the composite, increasing water resistance. The composites are made by altering three parameters: waste plastic content, filler powder composition, and chemical treatment. It was discovered that the integration of thorn powder increased the wear resistance. The composites were tested in accordance with ASTM standards, and the results were optimized. Based on the results, composite specimens were created and tested for validation.

The reversible shrink-swell behavior of expansive soil imposes a serious challenge that threatens the overlying structures' safety and durability. Traditional chemical additives such as lime and cement still exhibit satisfying performance over their counterparts in terms of swelling potential reduction. Nevertheless, significant concerns are associated with these chemicals, in addition to their environmental impact. This paper proposes a novel application of the closed-cell one-component hydrophobic polyurethane foam (HPUF) to stabilize the swelling soil. An extensive experimental study was performed to assess the efficiency of HPUF in mitigating both the swelling and shrinkage response of high montmorillonite content expansive soil. Expansive soil was injected/mixed with different weight ratios of the proposed stabilizer, and the optimum mixing design and injection percentage of the foam resin were identified to be ranged from 10% to 15%. The shrink-swell behaviors of both injected and noninjected samples were compared. Results of this comparison confirmed that HPUF could competently reduce both the swelling potential and the shrinkage cracking of the reactive expansive soil, even after several wet-shrink cycles.

Automated Tape Placement (ATP) technology is one of the processes that is used for the production of the thermoplastic composite materials. The ATP process is complex, requiring multiple melting/crystallization cycles. In the current paper, laser-assisted ATP was used to manufacture two thermoplastic composites (IM7/PEEK and AS4/PA12). Those specimens were compared to specimens that were made of thermoset polymeric composites (IM7/8552) manufactured while using a standard autoclave cycle. In order assess the quality, void content, fibre distribution, and fibre misalignment were measured. After manufacturing, specimens from the three materials were assessed using optical microscopy and computed tomography (CT) scans. The results showed that, as compared to the thermoset composites, thermoplastics that are manufactured by the ATP have a higher amount of voids. On the other hand, manufacturing using the ATP showed an improvement in both the fibre distribution inside the matrix and the fibre misalignment.

This work aims at analyzing elastic wave characteristics in a polymeric nanocomposite curved beam reinforced by graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). GNPs are adopted as a nanofiller inside the matrix to enhance the effective properties, which are approximated through Halpin-Tasi model and a modified rule of mixture. A higher-order shear deformation theory accounting for thickness stretching and the general strain gradient model to have both nonlocality and strain gradient size-dependency phenomena are adopted to model the nanobeam. A virtual work of Hamilton statement is utilized to get the governing motion equations and is solved in conjunction with the harmonic solution procedure. A comparative study shows the effects of small-scale coefficients, opening angle, weight fraction, the total number of layers in GNPs, and wave numbers on the propagation of waves in reinforced nanocomposite curved beams. This work is also developed for two different distribution of GNPs in a polymeric matrix, namely uniformly distribution and functionally graded one.

The exposure of polymeric composites to thermal loading is a ubiquitous problem that leads to the degradation of mechanical properties, reducing the service life of an engineered structure, and potentially premature, catastrophic modes of failure. In the current paper, an experimental study is presented in order to investigate the effect of thermal exposure on the crushing performance of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite tubes. Specimens of rectangular tubes are subjected to thermal exposure at 90, 120, 150 and 180 °C before being crushed under quasi-static loading. The results showed a reduction in the peak load by increasing the aging temperature up to °C, which is followed by an increase in the peak load at 150 °C, due to post-curing. For the energy absorbed and the specific energy, a sharp reduction is recorded (up to 70% reduction) due to thermal aging. These results showed that the effect of thermal exposure on crashworthiness needs more attention during composites' design, especially for transportation applications.
