BACKGROUND: Impaired awareness of hypoglycemia (IAH) is related to a three- to sixfold increase in the risk of severe hypoglycemia in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). This study aimed to assess the prevalence of IAH and its risk factors and determine the frequency of hypoglycemic symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of IAH and its risk factors and determine the frequency of hypoglycemic symptoms. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted among T1D patients attending Jazan Endocrine and Diabetes Center in Jazan province, Saudi Arabia. A total of 151 patients participated, using the interview-based Clarke questionnaire, a validated eight-item questionnaire to evaluate IAH. Scoring four or more answers as reduced awareness categorizes the participant as having IAH. RESULTS: The prevalence of IAH was 25.2% among the T1D patients. IAH was significantly associated with body mass index (BMI; p = 0.034), occupation (p = 0.014), and blood glucose monitoring methods (p = 0.027). Shaking and sweating were the most commonly reported symptoms of hypoglycemia. A BMI of <25 kg/m2 was higher linked to hunger and speech difficulty compared to a BMI of ≥25 kg/m2 (p < 0.05). Changing the insulin injection site was associated with confusion, odd behavior, and speech difficulty (p < 0.05). Monitoring blood glucose four times daily was associated with sweating, odd behavior, and incoordination (p = 0.024) compared to monitoring less than four times daily (p < 0.05). A hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) reading of ≥7 was linked to odd behavior compared to an HbA1c reading of <7 (p = 0.032). Patients committed to insulin injections were more likely to experience palpitations than non-committed patients (p = 0.038). Each one-unit increase in age, monitoring blood glucose, and income was associated with a decrease in the odds of IAH (OR of Age = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.83-0.95) (OR of income = 0.10, 95% CI: 0.01-0.55). Moreover, individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than or equal to 25 (OR = 2.99, 95% CI: 1.13-8.25), employed individuals (OR = 18.2, 95% CI: 3.75-105), and diabetes duration of more than ten years (OR = 3.96, 95% CI: 1.31- 13.2) exhibited an increase in the higher risk of IAH. CONCLUSION: IAH was prevalent among T1D patients attending Jazan Endocrine and Diabetes Center. The main associated factors included BMI, blood glucose monitoring method, and occupation. Future research should investigate the underlying causes of the observed associations and explore strategies to enhance the awareness of hypoglycemia.

Background Diabetes mellitus is a disease whose dramatic increase in prevalence worldwide poses a global health crisis. Saudi Arabia has the seventh highest rate of diabetes in the world and the second highest rate in the Middle East. The incidence of diabetes has risen due to insufficient knowledge, attitude, and practice surrounding the disease. Saudis' quality of life has decreased due to the recent rise in diabetes-related mortality and illnesses. Hence, leading healthy lives requires patients to have positive attitudes and self-awareness, which will eventually contribute to reducing diabetes mellites-related complications. Methods A cross-sectional study among patients with type 2 diabetes mellites (T2DM) in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia was conducted to assess Saudi adults' knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding the disease. The patients participated in the study by filling in a questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out using R software, version 4.0.5 (R Studio: Integrated Development for R, Boston, MA) and the analysis included general sample demographics. KAP scores were the dependent variables. Following the sample description, regression analysis was performed to examine the adjusted relationships between KAP factors and independent variables. The impact of all independent variables on KAP variables was examined using multiple linear regression analysis. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant, and the beta coefficient was applied to estimate the associations between the independent variables and the KAP variables.  Results A total of 424 participants were involved in this study, with 194 male participants and 230 female participants. The mean duration of having T2DM was 7.63 ± 7.19 years. More than half of the study participants had a degree (58.49%), and nearly half were employed (42.45%). Married participants had higher knowledge and attitude scores than single and divorced or widowed participants (9.19 ± 3.38, 80.14 ± 14.72, respectively). In comparison, divorced or widowed participants had higher practice scores than single and married participants (16.35 ± 7.42). Participants with higher education attainment had higher knowledge and attitude scores than those with no degree (9.54 ± 3.39, 80.58 ± 17.57, respectively), whereas participants with no degree demonstrated higher practice scores (16.85 ± 8.3) than those with degrees. In examining the study participants' KAP scores, we found knowledge to be insufficient in 51.2% and sufficient in 48.8% of the participants. Of the participants, 7.8% were found to have negative attitude levels and 92.2% were found to have positive attitude levels. Finally, study participants' practice levels were found to be negative in 24.8% and positive in 75.2% of participants. Conclusions This study revealed that patients have gaps in their knowledge, attitude, and practice in regard to T2DM. In this study, associations and correlations were established between KAP scores and the sociodemographic characteristics of the patients. The findings of this study could be helpful to policymakers, decision-makers, health care professionals, and patient advocacy groups in developing interventions to improve the health outcomes in T2DM patients.

(1) Background: Neck pain is the most common type of musculoskeletal problem affecting office workers. Various occupational risk factors have been linked to neck pain. This study aims to assess the prevalence and risk factors of neck pain among office workers at the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, and the participants completed an online questionnaire based on the Standardized Nordic questionnaire and Quality of Life Scale Brief Version to evaluate their neck pain and the physical, psychological, social, and environmental factors that might affect their conditions. A descriptive analysis was conducted for the data and a logistic regression was performed to ascertain the effects of biodemographic and occupational factors on the likelihood of having neck pain. (3) Results: A total of 413 subjects (176 females and 237 males) participated in our study with an average age of 33.6 ± 8 years. The prevalence of neck pain in our participants was 64% during a twelve-month period. Females were less likely to suffer neck pain than males (OR = 0.52, 95%CI [0.30,0.87]), and age, BMI, level of education, and profession were not associated with likelihood of having neck pain. However, reduced working hours were associated with a reduction in the likelihood of having neck pain (OR = 0.42, 95%CI [0.33,0.53]). (4) Conclusion: Neck pain affects a large proportion of the office workers at the Ministry of Health, and this pain is significantly associated with long working hours and males. Thus, there is a need for future research that can investigate how associated factors can be managed to reduce the long-term impact of neck pain on workers' lives. Quality improvement approaches might be used to implement effective interventions for the prevention and management of work-related risk factors that can cause neck pain.

BACKGROUND: Sodium-glucose cotransporter inhibitors are promising medications for improving cardiovascular outcomes in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. The baseline characteristics associated with its prescription in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, are still lacking. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine the baseline characteristics associated with its prescription among type 2 diabetic patients in the Jazan region. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Jazan region, Saudi Arabia, who received a prescription of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) from June 2016 to December 2021 was conducted. Categorical baseline characteristics are reported as frequencies, and proportion and continuous variables are reported as means (SD). The crude odds and adjusted ratio (OR) (95% CI) for SGLT2i prescription were then calculated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 370 patients who satisfied the inclusion criteria were included in this study. There were 133 patients (36%) who had been prescribed SGLT2i over a median follow-up of five years. Characteristics associated with the prescription were female gender (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.2, 95% Cl: 1.3-3.9), endocrinologist doctors (aOR: 2.4, 95% Cl: 1.3-4.5), patients who had visited the center four times or more (aOR: 10.9, 95% Cl: 4.6-25.9), patients who have evidence of DM retinopathy (aOR: 9.7, 95% Cl: 2.9-31.7), or patients who are morbidly obese (aOR: 4.1, 95% Cl: 1.1-14.8). CONCLUSION: The sodium-glucose cotransporter inhibitors are under-prescribed among type 2 diabetic patients in the Jazan region despite their availability. Further studies are warranted to address the potential barriers to prescriptions among different medical specialties.

Background Physical activity (PA) is an important determinant of health because of its role in preventing multiple chronic diseases. A better understanding of the relationship between PA and factors that promote or hinder PA is necessary for adherence to PA recommendations. This study aimed to estimate the proportion of adults of the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia adhering to PA recommendations and to examine the effects of socio-economic factors on meeting these recommendations. Method The official short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to assess PA. Participants aged 17-74 years (n = 709) were categorized into active or inactive categories. Independent associations between PA categories and socio-economic factors were explored using binary logistic regression. Results The proportion of the adults of the Jazan region who were inactive, i.e., not adhering to the PA recommendations, was 58.3%. Those with body mass index >30 kg /m2 (OR = 0.51; 95%CI: 0.32-0.84) were less likely to be more active than those with normal weight. Participants who rated their health as very good (OR = 0.68; 95% CI: 0.49-0.96) and good (OR = 0.39; 95% CI: 0.22-0.70) were less likely to be more active than those who rated their health as excellent.  Conclusions More than half of the adult population of the Jazan region did not adhere to the PA levels necessary to promote health and prevent chronic diseases. Such a high prevalence of low PA is a major health problem. Thus, efforts are warranted to promote PA in the Jazan region, particularly among obese female adults. High self-perceived health was an important correlate of PA among the adult population of Jazan. Because of the wide range of physical activity levels among population subgroups, a social-ecological approach for physical activity promotion may be warranted.
