RESUMO

Sense of touch is essential for our interactions with external objects and fine control of hand actions. Despite extensive research on human somatosensory processing, it is still elusive how involved brain regions interact as a dynamic network in processing tactile information. Few studies probed temporal dynamics of somatosensory information flow and reported inconsistent results. Here, we examined cortical somatosensory processing through magnetic source imaging and cortico-cortical coupling dynamics. We recorded magnetoencephalography signals from typically developing children during unilateral pneumatic stimulation. Neural activities underlying somatosensory evoked fields were mapped with dynamic statistical parametric mapping, assessed with spatiotemporal activation analysis, and modeled by Granger causality. Unilateral pneumatic stimulation evoked prominent and consistent activations in the contralateral primary and secondary somatosensory areas but weaker and less consistent activations in the ipsilateral primary and secondary somatosensory areas. Activations in the contralateral primary motor cortex and supramarginal gyrus were also consistently observed. Spatiotemporal activation and Granger causality analysis revealed initial serial information flow from contralateral primary to supramarginal gyrus, contralateral primary motor cortex, and contralateral secondary and later dynamic and parallel information flows between the consistently activated contralateral cortical areas. Our study reveals the spatiotemporal dynamics of cortical somatosensory processing in the normal developing brain.

RESUMO

We present a complete, chromosome scale reference genome for the long-distance migratory bat Pipistrellus nathusii. The genome encompasses both haplotypic sets of autosomes and separation of both sex chromosomes by utilising highly-accurate long-reads and preserving long-range phasing information through the use of 3-dimensional chromatin conformation capture sequencing (Hi-C). This genome, accompanied by a comprehensive protein-coding sequence annotation, provides a valuable genomic resource for future investigations into the genomic bases of long-distance migratory flight in bats as well as uncovering the genetic architecture, population structure and evolutionary history of Pipistrellus nathusii. The reference-quality genome presented here gives a fundamental resource to further our understanding of bat genetics and evolution, adding to the growing number of high quality genetic resources in this field. Here, we demonstrate its use in the phylogenetic reconstruction of the order Chiroptera and in particular, we present the resources to allow detailed investigations into the genetic drivers and adaptations related to long-distance migration.

OBJECTIVE: Different tools to assess the potential risk of bias (RoB) for cross-sectional studies have been developed, but it is unclear whether all pertinent bias concepts are addressed. We aimed to identify RoB concepts applicable to cross-sectional research validity and to explore coverage for each in existing appraisal tools. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. We included records of any study design describing or reporting methods, concepts or tools used to consider RoB in health research reported to be descriptive/ prevalence survey or analytic/association (cross-sectional) study designs. Synthesis included quantitative and qualitative analysis. RESULTS: Of the 4,556 records screened, 90 were selected for inclusion; 67 (74%) described the development of, or validation process for, appraisal tools, 15 (17%) described methodological content or theory relevant to RoB for cross-sectional studies and 8 (9%) records of methodological systematic reviews. Review of methodological reports identified important RoB concepts for both descriptive/prevalence and analytic/association studies. Tools identified (n=64 unique tools) were either intended to appraise quality or assess RoB in multiple study designs including cross-sectional studies (n=21; 33%) or cross-sectional designs alone (n=43; 67%). Several existing tools were modified (n=17; 27%) for application to cross-sectional studies. The RoB items most frequently addressed in the RoB tools were validity and reliability of the exposure (53%) or outcome (65%) measurement and representativeness of the study population (59%). Most tools did not consider non-response or missingness appropriately or at all. CONCLUSION: Assessing cross-sectional studies involves unique risk of bias (RoB) considerations. We identified RoB tools designed for broad applicability across various study designs as well as those specifically tailored for cross-sectional studies. However, none of the identified tools comprehensively address all potential biases pertinent to cross-sectional studies. Our findings indicate a need for continued improvement of RoB tools and suggest that the development of context-specific or more precise tools for this study design may be necessary.

BACKGROUND: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides supplemental healthy foods to children under age 5 years in low-income households. OBJECTIVE: To characterize WIC benefit redemption, identify associations between benefit redemption with child dietary intake, and whether child age modifies these associations. DESIGN: The cross-sectional 2023 California Statewide WIC Survey, conducted with caregivers of WIC-participating children ages 1-4 years, was analyzed for this study. Included children had complete benefit redemption data, a complete National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Dietary Screener Questionnaire (DSQ), and complete covariate data (weighted n=2,244). Monthly household category-specific benefit redemption percentage was averaged across 6 and 3 months preceding survey completion. Associations between household redemption and child dietary intake (servings or amount/day) were assessed with multivariable linear regression and expressed as estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Twenty-five percent higher redemption of breakfast cereal, whole grain bread, yogurt and whole milk in the 6 months prior to the survey were associated with higher child intake frequency for cereal (0.02 servings/day, 95% CI [0.00, 0.04]), whole grain bread (0.02 [0.00, 0.03]), yogurt (0.04 [0.02, 0.06]), and whole milk (0.09 [0.01, 0.16]). Significant effect modification by child age (12 to <24 months, 24 to 59 months) was found for redemption of cheese/tofu and 100% juice (interaction p-values 0.02 and 0.001, respectively), and 25% higher redemption of these benefits were associated with lower intake frequency for cheese (-0.05 servings/day, 95% CI [-0.09, -0.02]) and higher intake frequency for juice (0.12 [0.06, 0.18]), but only among children ages 12 to <24 months. CONCLUSIONS: Higher redemption was associated with higher child intake of select WIC foods. Pairing the promotion of benefit redemption among program participants with nutrition education efforts may enhance dietary impacts of WIC participation.

OBJECTIVE: A novel small form factor circular electrode array was designed specifically for electrical impedance tomography (EIT) based assessment of surgical margins during robot assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). METHODS: The electrode array consists of 33 gold-plated electrodes arranged within a 9.5 mm diameter circular footprint on the end of a surgical probe that can be introduced through a standard 12 mm laparoscopic port used during RARP. The electrode array contains 8 larger, low-contact impedance outer electrodes dedicated for current drive and an internal grid of 25 smaller electrodes for simultaneous voltage measurement. Separating electrode geometry by function is designed to improve current delivery, speed, and resolution while reducing hardware requirements. RESULTS: Simulations demonstrated that 1 mm diameter hemispherical prostate cancer inclusions could be localized within regions of adipose and benign prostate tissue; 1.5 mm diameter inclusions were required for localization within muscle tissue. A 2.38 mm diameter aluminum rod in 0.2 S/m saline could be localized throughout the imaging domain with a position error of less than 2.5 mm for depths from the electrode array surface of up to 1.7 mm. Ex vivo tissue experiments with a bovine model demonstrate visual congruence of muscle and adipose tissue locations between the sample and reconstructed images. CONCLUSION: Simulation and experimental results indicate good detection and location of inclusions. SIGNIFICANCE: These results suggest the proposed electrode array design can provide sufficient accuracy in the detection and localization of prostate cancer against clinically relevant background tissues for use during RARP.

DNMT3A mutations are frequently found in clonal hematopoiesis and a variety of hematologic malignancies including acute myeloid leukemia (AML). An assortment of mouse models have been engineered to explore the tumorigenic potential and malignant lineage bias due to loss of function of DNMT3A in consort with commonly co-mutated genes in myeloid malignancies such as Flt3, Nras, Kras, and c-Kit. We employed several tamoxifen-inducible Cre-ERT2 murine model systems to study the effects of constitutively active KrasG12D-driven myeloid leukemia (Kras) development together with heterozygous (3aHet) or homozygous Dnmt3a deletion (3aKO). Due to the rapid generation of diverse nonhematologic tumors appearing after tamoxifen induction, we employed a transplantation model. With pretransplant tamoxifen induction, most Kras mice died quickly of T-cell malignancies regardless of Dnmt3a status. Using post-transplant induction, we observed a dose-dependent effect of DNMT3A depletion that skewed the leukemic phenotype toward a myeloid lineage- 64% of 3aKO/Kras mice had exclusively myeloid disease compared with 36% of 3aHet/Kras, and only 13% of Kras mice. 3aKO combined with Kras led to increased disease burden, multi-organ infiltration, and faster disease progression. DOT1L inhibition exerted profound anti-leukemic effects in malignant 3aKO/Kras cells, but not malignant cells with Kras mutation alone, consistent with the known sensitivity of DNMT3A-mutant leukemia to DOT1L inhibition. RNAseq from malignant myeloid cells revealed that biallelic Dnmt3a deletion was associated with loss of cell cycle regulation, MYC activation, and TNF⍺ signaling. Overall, we have developed a robust model system for mechanistic and preclinical investigations of AML with DNMT3A and Ras pathway lesions.

BACKGROUND: Footwear, orthoses, and insoles have been shown to influence balance in older adults, however it remains unclear which features, singular or in combination, are considered optimal. The aim of this scoping review was to identify and synthesise the current evidence regarding how footwear, orthoses, and insoles influence balance in older adults. Four electronic databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase and AMED) were searched from inception to October 2023. Key terms such as "shoe*", "orthoses", "postural balance" and "older people" were employed in the search strategy. Studies meeting the following criteria were included: (i) participants had a minimum age ≥ 60 years, and were free of any neurological, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular diseases, (ii) an active intervention consisting of either footwear, foot orthoses or insoles was evaluated, and (iii) at least one objective outcome measure of balance was reported. SUMMARY: A total of 56 studies from 17 different countries were included. Three study designs were utilised (cross-sectional study, n=44; randomised parallel group, n=6; cohort study n=6). The duration of studies varied considerably, with 41 studies evaluating immediate effects, 14 evaluating effects from three days to 12 weeks, and 1 study having a duration of 6 months. 17 different interventions were evaluated, including/consisting of textured insoles (n=12), heel elevation (n=8), non-specific standardised footwear and changes in sole thickness or hardness (n=7 each), sole geometry or rocker soles, contoured or custom insoles and high collar height (n=6 each), insole thickness or hardness and vibrating insoles (n=5 each), outsole tread (n=4), minimalist footwear and slippers (n=3 each), balance-enhancing shoes, footwear fit, socks, and ankle-foot orthoses (n=2 each), and eversion insoles, heel cups, and unstable footwear (n=1 each). 23 different outcomes were assessed, and postural sway was the most common (n=20), followed by temporo-spatial gait parameters (n=17). There was uncertainty regarding intervention effectiveness. Overall, features such as secure fixation, a textured insole, a medium-to-hard density midsole and a higher ankle collar, in isolation, were able to positively impact balance. Conversely, footwear with an elevated heel height and use of socks and slippers impaired balance. KEY MESSAGES: There is a substantial body of literature exploring the effects of footwear, orthoses, and insoles on balance in older adults. However, considerable uncertainty exists regarding the efficacy of these interventions due to variability in methodological approaches. Further high-quality research is necessary to determine whether a singular intervention or a combination of interventions is most effective for enhancing balance in older adults.

Background: Sex impacts individuals' response to vaccination. However, most vaccine studies do not report these differences disaggregated by sex. The aim of this study was to assess sex differences in the immunogenicity and efficacy of influenza vaccine. Methods: We performed a meta-analysis using phase 3 randomized controlled trial data conducted between 2010 and 2018. Using hemagglutination inhibition antibody titers for each strain, differences in geometric mean ratios (GMRs) were calculated by sex. Risk ratios (RRs) comparing seroconversion proportions were pooled for females and males using random-effects models. Vaccine efficacy (VE) was assessed. Data were analyzed by age group (18-64 vs ≥65 years). Results: A total of 33 092 healthy adults from 19 studies were included for immunogenicity analysis, and 6740 from 1 study for VE. Whereas no sex differences in immunogenicity were found in adults <65 years old, older females had a significantly greater chance to seroconvert compared to older males for all strains: RRH1N1 = 1.17 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 1.12-1.23]; RRH3N2 = 1.09 [95% CI, 1.05-1.14]; RRVictoria = 1.23 [95% CI, 1.14-1.31]; RRYamagata = 1.22 [95% CI, 1.14-1.30]. GMRs were also higher in older females for all strains compared to older males. VE in preventing laboratory-confirmed influenza was higher in older females compared to older males with VEs of 27.32% (95% CI, 1.15%-46.56%) and 6.06% (95% CI, -37.68% to 35.90%), respectively. Conclusions: Our results suggest a higher immunogenicity and VE in females compared to males in older adults. These differences in immunogenicity and VE support the disaggregation of vaccine data by sex in clinical trials and observational studies. Clinical Trials Registration: CRD42018112260.

We report the transfer of H-atoms from a reduced polyoxovanadate alkoxide [nOct4N][V6O6(OH2)(OMe)12] via concerted proton-electron transfer. Oxygen reduction is compared between bridging and terminal O-H bonds revealing similar mechanisms, providing new insight to design criteria for metal-oxide electrocatalysts that faciliate oxygen reduction by concerted-proton electron transfer.

BACKGROUND: External tags, such as transmitters and loggers, are often used to study bat movements. However, physiological and behavioural effects on bats carrying tags have rarely been investigated, and recommendations on the maximum acceptable tag mass are rather based on rules of thumb than on rigorous scientific assessment. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive three-step assessment of the potential physiological and behavioural effects of tagging bats, using common noctules Nyctalus noctula as a model. First, we examined seasonal changes in body mass. Second, we predicted and then measured potential changes in flight metabolic rate in a wind tunnel. Third, we conducted a meta-analysis of published data to assess effects of different tag masses on the weight and behaviour of bats. RESULTS: Individual body mass of common noctules varied seasonally by 7.0 ± 2.6 g (range: 0.5-11.5 g). Aerodynamic theory predicted a 26% increase in flight metabolic rate for a common noctule equipped with a 3.8 g tag, equating to 14% of body mass. In a wind tunnel experiment, we could not confirm the predicted increase for tagged bats. Our meta-analysis revealed a weak correlation between tag mass and emergence time and flight duration in wild bats. Interestingly, relative tag mass (3-19% of bat body mass) was not related to body mass loss, but bats lost more body mass the longer tags were attached. Notably, relatively heavy bats lost more mass than conspecifics with a more average body mass index. CONCLUSION: Because heavy tags (> 3 g) were generally used for shorter periods of time than lighter tags (~ 1 g), the long-term effects of heavy tags on bats cannot be assessed at this time. Furthermore, the effects of disturbance and resource distribution in the landscape cannot be separated from those of tagging. We recommend that tags weighing 5-10% of a bat's mass should only be applied for a few days. For longer studies, tags weighing less than 5% of a bat's body mass should be used. To avoid adverse effects on bats, researchers should target individuals with average, rather than peak, body mass indices.

OBJECTIVE: To determine patterns of physiotherapy and opioid use among compensated workers with low back pain (LBP), factors associated with these, and their association with time loss. METHODS: Accepted Victorian and South Australian workers' compensation claims, services, medicines data for LBP claims lodged 30th June 2010-1st July 2015. Descriptive statistics, multinomial logistic and Cox regression was used to determine usage groups, their predictors, and effect of these on time loss. RESULTS: Of 15,728 claims, 24.4% received no services, 3.6% opioids only, 43.3% physiotherapy only and 28.8% both opioids and physiotherapy. Sex, age, occupation, remoteness, jurisdiction and socioeconomic status were significantly associated with usage groups. Using opioids and physiotherapy had the longest time loss. CONCLUSIONS: Any services/medicine usage was associated with increased time loss; longest for combined physiotherapy and opioids.

Objective: Successful clinical conversations about vaccination in pregnancy (pertussis, COVID-19, and influenza) are key to improving low uptake rates of both vaccination in pregnancy and infancy. The purpose of this study was to understand Canadian perinatal care providers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices around vaccination in pregnancy. Methods: Qualitative interviews with 49 perinatal care providers (nurse practitioner, general practitioner, registered nurse, registered midwife, obstetrician-gynecologist, and family physicians) in 6 of 13 provinces and territories were deductively coded using directed content analysis [1] and analyzed according to key themes. Results: Participants detailed their professional training and experiences, patient community demographics, knowledge of vaccines, views and beliefs about vaccination in pregnancy, and attitudes about vaccine counselling. Providers generally described having a good range of information sources to keep vaccine knowledge up to date. Some providers lacked the necessary logistical setups to administer vaccines within their practice. Responses suggest diverging approaches to vaccine counselling. With merely hesitant patients, some opted to dig in and have more in-depth discussions, while others felt the likelihood of persuading an outright vaccine-refusing patient to vaccinate was too low to be worthwhile. Conclusion: Provider knowledge, attitudes, and practices around vaccination varied by professional background. To support perinatal providers' knowledge and practices, clinical guidelines should detail the importance of vaccination relative to other care priorities, emphasize the positive impact of engaging hesitant patients in vaccine counselling.

Social support is vital for mental and physical health and is linked to lower rates of disease and early mortality. Conversely, anti-social behavior can increase mortality risks, both for the initiator and target of the behavior. Chronic stress, which also can increase mortality, may serve as an important link between social behavior and healthy lifespan. There is a growing body of literature in both humans, and model organisms, that chronic social stress can result in more rapid telomere shortening, a measure of biological aging. Here we examine the role of anti-social behavior and social support on physiological markers of stress and aging in the social Japanese quail, Coturnix Japonica. Birds were maintained in groups for their entire lifespan, and longitudinal measures of antisocial behavior (aggressive agonistic behavior), social support (affiliative behavior), baseline corticosterone, change in telomere length, and lifespan were measured. We found quail in affiliative relationships both committed less and were the targets of less aggression compared to birds who were not in these relationships. In addition, birds displaying affiliative behavior had longer telomeres, and longer lifespans. Our work suggests a novel pathway by which social support may buffer against damage at the cellular level resulting in telomere protection and subsequent longer lifespans.

The combined use of immune checkpoint inhibitors and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (ICI/TKI) is an effective treatment strategy for some cancers. A better understanding of the potential additive toxicity for ICI/TKI combinations is needed to inform patient and provider treatment decisions. We aim to evaluate the safety of ICI/TKI combinations for individuals with renal cell or endometrial carcinoma. This rapid systematic review (SR) protocol follows PRISMA guidelines. A systematic search will be designed, peer reviewed and executed by experienced information specialists (Cochrane Central, MEDLINE, Embase) to identify published SRs and primary studies published since the most recent SR search. Randomized, quasi- or non-randomized controlled trials and comparative cohort studies are eligible if they compare ICI/TKI combinations to monotherapy or standard of care in participants with renal cell or endometrial carcinoma. The primary outcome is grade ≥ 3 treatment-related adverse-effects. Studies will be screened, selected, extracted and assessed for risk of bias by a single reviewer and checked completely by a second. Where feasible and appropriate, we will pool studies separately by design and indication using meta-analysis and test robustness of effects using prespecified subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Results will be summarized descriptively and presented in tables and figures. (PROSPERO ID: CRD42023416388).•This will be a comprehensive systematic review of the additive toxicity arising from the combined use of ICI/TKIs in patients with renal-cell or endometrial carcinoma.•We will consider treatment-related, treatment-emergent adverse events (Grade 3 or higher).•Identified safety profile may be used to inform patient or provider treatment decisions.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination among immigrant children in Canada. We conducted a study in Alberta, Canada to assess HPV vaccine coverage among school-aged immigrant children compared with non-immigrant children. METHODS: This cohort study analysed population-based linked administrative health data to measure HPV vaccine coverage for 346 749 school-aged children, including 31 656 immigrants. Coverage was examined at 12 y of age from 2008 to 2018 for females, and from 2014 to 2018 for males and both sexes combined; vaccine series completion was considered receipt of three doses, with initiation (one or more dose) as a supplementary analysis. Multivariable logistic regression examined the association of vaccine coverage with migration status, adjusting for sociodemographic variables. RESULTS: Between 2014 and 2018, HPV vaccination coverage among immigrant children at age 12 y was significantly higher (52.58%) compared with non-immigrant children (47.41%). After controlling for place of residence, income quintile, biological sex and year, immigrant children had 1.10 greater odds (95% confidence interval 1.07 to 1.14) of receiving three doses of HPV vaccine compared with non-immigrant children. Immigrants from Asia and Africa had the highest coverage (60.25-68.78%), while immigrants from North America, Oceania and South America had the lowest coverage (39.97-48.36%). CONCLUSIONS: It is encouraging that immigrant children had higher HPV vaccine coverage compared with non-immigrants. Among immigrants, routine immunization promotion strategies should be tailored based on the country of origin.

BACKGROUND: Thanks to its unrivalled spatial and temporal resolutions and signal-to-noise ratio, intracranial EEG (iEEG) is becoming a valuable tool in neuroscience research. To attribute functional properties to cortical tissue, it is paramount to be able to determine precisely the localization of each electrode with respect to a patient's brain anatomy. Several software packages or pipelines offer the possibility to localize manually or semi-automatically iEEG electrodes. However, their reliability and ease of use may leave to be desired. NEW METHOD: Voxeloc (voxel electrode locator) is a Matlab-based graphical user interface to localize and visualize stereo-EEG electrodes. Voxeloc adopts a semi-automated approach to determine the coordinates of each electrode contact, the user only needing to indicate the deep-most contact of each electrode shaft and another point more proximally. RESULTS: With a deliberately streamlined functionality and intuitive graphical user interface, the main advantages of Voxeloc are ease of use and inter-user reliability. Additionally, oblique slices along the shaft of each electrode can be generated to facilitate the precise localization of each contact. Voxeloc is open-source software and is compatible with the open iEEG-BIDS (Brain Imaging Data Structure) format. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS: Localizing full patients' iEEG implants was faster using Voxeloc than two comparable software packages, and the inter-user agreement was better. CONCLUSIONS: Voxeloc offers an easy-to-use and reliable tool to localize and visualize stereo-EEG electrodes. This will contribute to democratizing neuroscience research using iEEG.

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus is a common condition where the subluxation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint and lateral deviation of the hallux at the interphalangeal joint creates difficulty with footwear fit. Footwear and foot orthoses are commonly prescribed nonsurgical treatments for hallux valgus. RESEARCH QUESTION: Do extra-width footwear and foot orthoses influence peak pressure at the medial aspect of the metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints in women with hallux valgus? METHODS: Community-dwelling women with symptomatic hallux valgus underwent gait testing when wearing their own shoes and when wearing extra-width footwear fitted with three-quarter length, arch-contouring prefabricated foot orthoses. Peak pressure (kPa) on the medial aspect of the metatarsophalangeal and medial interphalangeal joints and on the plantar surface of the foot (hallux, lesser toes, metatarsophalangeal joint 1, metatarsophalangeal joints 2-5, midfoot and heel) were measured using the novel pedar®-X system with the pedar® pad and pedar® insole, respectively (Novel, GmbH, Munich, Germany). Paired samples t-tests were used to calculate the differences between the two conditions, and the magnitude of observed differences was calculated using Cohen's d. RESULTS: We tested 28 participants (aged 44-80 years, mean 60.7, standard deviation 10.7). Compared to their own footwear, wearing the intervention footwear and orthoses was associated with a statistically significant decrease in pressure on the medial aspect of the metatarsophalangeal joint (58.3 ± 32.8 versus 42.6 ± 32.8, p=0.026, d=0.49), increased pressure under the midfoot (70.7 ± 25.7 versus 78.7 ± 23.6, p=0.029, d=0.33) and decreased pressure underneath the heel (137.3 ± 39.0 versus 121.3 ± 34.8, p=0.019, d=0.45). SIGNIFICANCE: The intervention footwear and orthoses significantly decreased peak pressure on the medial aspect of the first metatarsophalangeal joint but had no significant effect on the interphalangeal joint. Further studies are required to determine whether these changes are associated with improvements in symptoms associated with hallux valgus.

The gut microbiome may affect overall cardiometabolic health. Enterolactone is an enterolignan reflective of dietary lignan intake and gut microbiota composition and diversity that can be measured in the urine. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between urinary enterolactone concentration as a reflection of gut health and blood pressure/risk of hypertension in a large representative sample from the US population. This analysis was conducted using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected from January 1999 through December 2010. Variables of interest included participant characteristics (including demographic, anthropometric and social/environmental factors), resting blood pressure and hypertension history, and urinary enterolactone concentration. 10,637 participants (45 years (SE = 0.3), 51.7% (SE = 0.6%) were female) were included in analyses. In multivariable models adjusted for demographic, socioeconomic and behavioral/environmental covariates, each one-unit change in log-transformed increase in enterolactone was associated with a 0.738 point (95% CI: -0.946, -0.529; p<0.001) decrease in systolic blood pressure and a 0.407 point (95% CI: -0.575, -0.239; p<0.001) decrease in diastolic blood pressure. Moreover, in fully adjusted models, each one-unit change in log-transformed enterolactone was associated with 8.2% lower odds of hypertension (OR = 0.918; 95% CI: 0.892, 0.944; p<0.001). Urinary enterolactone, an indicator of gut microbiome health, is inversely associated with blood pressure and hypertension risk in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults.

PURPOSE: The aims of this study are to determine how continuous the care provided by physiotherapists to compensated workers with low back pain is, what factors are associated with physiotherapy continuity of care (CoC; treatment by the same provider), and what the association between physiotherapy CoC and duration of working time loss is. METHODS: Workers' compensation claims and payments data from Victoria and South Australia were analysed. Continuity of care was measured with the usual provider continuity metric. Binary logistic regression examined factors associated with CoC. Cox regression models examined the association between working time loss and CoC. RESULTS: Thirty-six percent of workers experienced complete CoC, 25.8% high CoC, 26.1% moderate CoC, and 11.7% low CoC. Odds of complete CoC decreased with increased service volume. With decreasing CoC, there was significantly longer duration of compensated time loss. CONCLUSION: Higher CoC with a physiotherapist is associated with shorter compensated working time loss duration for Australian workers with low back pain.

BACKGROUND: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) issues infant formula to infants who are not fully breastfed, and prior research found elevated obesity risk among children receiving lactose-reduced infant formula with corn syrup solids (CSSF) issued by WIC. This study was conducted to evaluate associations between a broader set of specialty infant formulas issued by WIC and child obesity risk, whether neighborhood context (e.g. neighborhood food environment) modifies associations, and whether racial/ethnic disparities in obesity are partly explained by infant formula exposure and neighborhood context. METHODS: WIC administrative data, collected from 2013-2020 on issued amount (categorical: fully formula fed, mostly formula fed, mostly breastfed, fully breastfed) and type of infant formula (standard cow's milk formula, and three specialty formulas: any CSSF, any soy-based formula, and any cow's milk-based formula with added rice starch) and obesity at ages 2-4 years (defined as a Body Mass Index z-score ≥ 95th percentile according to World Health Organization growth standard) were used to construct a cohort (n = 59,132). Associations of infant formula exposures and race/ethnicity with obesity risk were assessed in Poisson regression models, and modification of infant feeding associations with obesity by neighborhood context was assessed with interaction terms. RESULTS: Any infant formula exposure was associated with significantly higher obesity risk relative to fully breastfeeding. Receipt of a CSSF was associated with 5% higher obesity risk relative to the standard and other specialty infant formulas (risk ratio 1.05, 95% confidence interval 1.02, 1.08) independent of breastfeeding duration and receipt of other specialty infant formulas. The association between CSSF and obesity risk was stronger in neighborhoods with healthier food environments (10% higher risk) compared to less healthy food environments (null). Racial/ethnic disparities in obesity risk were robust to adjustment for infant formula exposure and neighborhood environment. CONCLUSIONS: Among specialty infant formulas issued by WIC, only CSSFs were associated with elevated obesity risk, and this association was stronger in healthier food environments. Future research is needed to isolate the mechanism underlying this association.
