In nature, the symbiotic relationship between plants and microorganisms is crucial for ecosystem balance and plant growth. This study investigates the impact of Epichloë endophytic fungi, which are exclusively present aboveground, on the rhizosphere microbial functions of the host Melica transsilvanica. Using metagenomic methods, we analyzed the differences in microbial functional groups and functional genes in the rhizosphere soil between symbiotic (EI) and non-symbiotic (EF) plants. The results reveal that the presence of Epichloë altered the community structure of carbon and nitrogen cycling-related microbial populations in the host's rhizosphere, significantly increasing the abundance of the genes (porA, porG, IDH1) involved in the rTCA cycle of the carbon fixation pathway, as well as the abundance of nxrAB genes related to nitrification in the nitrogen-cycling pathway. Furthermore, the presence of Epichloë reduces the enrichment of virulence factors in the host rhizosphere microbiome, while significantly increasing the accumulation of resistance genes against heavy metals such as Zn, Sb, and Pb. This study provides new insights into the interactions among endophytic fungi, host plants, and rhizosphere microorganisms, and offers potential applications for utilizing endophytic fungi resources to improve plant growth and soil health.

The fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were synthesized via a facile one-pot solvothermal process using coal (Jin 15 Anthracite and Shaerhu lignite) as raw materials and dimethyl formamide (DMF) as the solvent, employing a microwave pyrolysis method. This approach demonstrates remarkable efficacy in the development of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with a high quantum yield (QY). The N-CDs prepared have strong photoluminescence properties. Moreover, the obtained N-CDs emit blue PL and are easily dispersed in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), preserving the inherent advantages of N-CDs and the PMMA matrix. The JN-CDs exhibit a high quantum yield (QY) of 49.5% and a production yield of 25.7%, respectively. In contrast, the SN-CDs demonstrate a quantum yield of 40% and a production yield of 35.1%. It is worth noting that the production yield and quantum yield of coal-based carbon dots are inversely related indices. The lower metamorphic degree of subbituminous coal favors an enhanced product yield, while the higher metamorphic degree of anthracite promotes an improved quantum yield in the product, which may be attributed to the presence of amorphous carbon within it. Consequently, we propose and discuss potential mechanisms underlying N-CD formation.

OBJECTIVES: To systematically analyze the accuracy of robotic surgery for dental implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched on October 25, 2023. Model studies or clinical studies reporting the accuracy of robotic surgery for dental implant placement among patients with missing or hopeless teeth were included. Risks of bias in clinical studies were assessed. Meta-analyses were undertaken. RESULTS: Data from 8 clinical studies reporting on 109 patients and 242 implants and 13 preclinical studies were included. Positional accuracy was measured by comparing the implant plan in presurgery CBCT and the actual implant position in postsurgery CBCT. For clinical studies, the pooled (95% confidence interval) platform deviation, apex deviation, and angular deviation were 0.68 (0.57, 0.79) mm, 0.67 (0.58, 0.75) mm, and 1.69 (1.25, 2.12)°, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between the accuracy of implants placed in partially or fully edentulous patients. For model studies, the pooled platform deviation, apex deviation, and angular deviation were 0.72 (0.58, 0.86) mm, 0.90 (0.74, 1.06) mm, and 1.46 (1.22, 1.70)°, respectively. No adverse event was reported. CONCLUSION: Within the limitation of the present systematic review, robotic surgery for dental implant placement showed suitable implant positional accuracy and had no reported obvious harm. Both robotic systems and clinical studies on robotic surgery for dental implant placement should be further developed.

Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves are a new raw food material rich in polysaccharides. These polysaccharides exhibit various biological properties, including antioxidant, hypoglycemic and immunoregulatory effects. However, the use of Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves polysaccharides (MOLP) may be limited by their large molecular weight (MW) and presence of numerous impurities, such as pigments. Research has indicated that degraded polysaccharides usually exhibit high biological activity because of changes in physical structure and chemical properties. In this study, we focused on the extraction of a degraded-modified fraction from MOLP using the Ultraviolet/ Hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) method. Specifically, the physicochemical properties and glycosidic bond composition of a particular fraction (UV/H2O2 degraded Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves polysaccharides in 3 h called DMOLP-3) were investigated. In addition, in vitro simulated digestion experiments showed that DMOLP-3 was only partially degraded during gastrointestinal digestion, indicating that DMOLP-3 can be utilised by gut microorganisms. Furthermore, the prebiotic properties of MOLP and DMOLP-3 was studied using an in vitro faecal fermentation model. The results indicated that compared with MOLP, DMOLP-3 led to a decrease in both the colour and MW of the polysaccharides. In addition, this model exhibited enhanced solubility and antioxidant capabilities while also influencing the surface morphology. Moreover, DMOLP-3 can facilitate the proliferation of advantageous microorganisms and enhance the synthesis of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These results provide valuable insights into the utilization of bioactive components in Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves for the intestinal health.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is one of the most prevalent inflammatory bowel diseases and poses a serious threat to human health. Currently, safe and effective preventive measures are unavailable. In this study, the protective effects of asiaticoside (AS) on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in mice and the underlying molecular mechanism were investigated. In this experiment, colitis was induced in mice with DSS. Subsequently, the role of AS in colitis and its underlying mechanisms were examined using H&E staining, immunofluorescence staining, western blot, Elisa, FMT, and other assays. The results showed that AS significantly attenuated the related symptoms of DSS-induced colitis in mice. In addition, AS inhibited the activation of signaling pathways TLR4/NF-κB and MAPK reduced the release of inflammatory factors, thereby attenuating the inflammatory response in mice. AS administration also restored the permeability of the intestinal barrier by increasing the levels of tight junction-associated proteins (claudin-3, occludin, and ZO-1). In addition, AS rebalanced the intestinal flora of DSS-treated mice by increasing the diversity of the flora. AS can alleviate DSS-induced ulcerative colitis in mice by maintaining the intestinal barrier, thus inhibiting the signaling pathways TLR4/NF-κB and MAPK activation, reducing the release of inflammatory factors, and regulating intestinal microecology.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Fufangxiaopi Formula (FF) is a modified form of Sishen Wan, traditionally used for treating diarrhea. The application of FF for treating ulcerative colitis (UC) has achieved desirable outcomes in clinical settings. However, the underlying mechanism of the effect of FF on UC is yet to be determined. AIM OF STUDY: This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect and underlying mechanism of FF on mice with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vivo, the efficacy of FF on the symptoms associated with DSS-induced colitis in mice was clarified by observing the body weight change, colon length, DAI score, and H&E staining. The release of inflammatory mediators in mouse colon tissues was detected by ELISA and MPO, and the contents of TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway and MAPK signaling pathway-related proteins, as well as intestinal barrier-related proteins, were detected in mouse colon tissues by western blot method. Changes in the content of barrier proteins in mouse colon tissues were detected by immunofluorescence. 16S rRNA sequencing and FMT were performed to clarify the effects of FF on intestinal flora. In vitro, the effect of FF-containing serum on LPS-induced inflammatory mediator release from RAW264.7 cells were detected by qRT-PCR. The contents of TLR4/NF The effects of FF-containing serum on B signaling pathway and MAPK signaling pathway related proteins in RAW264.7 cells and intestinal barrier related proteins in Caco-2 cells were detected by western blot. The effects of FF-containing serum on LPS-induced nuclear translocation of p65 protein in RAW264.7 cells and barrier-associated protein in Caco-2 cells were detected by immunofluorescence. RESULTS: In vivo studies showed that FF could significantly alleviate the symptoms of UC, including reducing colon length, weight loss, clinical score, and colon tissue injury in mice. FF could significantly reduce the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines by suppressing the activation of the TLR4/NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways. Moreover, FF could protect the integrity of intestinal barriers by significantly increasing claudin-3, occludin, and ZO-1 expression levels. 16S rRNA sequencing and FMT elucidate that FF can alleviate symptoms associated with colitis in mice by interfering with intestinal flora. In vitro studies showed that FF drug-containing serum could significantly inhibit proinflammatory responses and attenuate the secretion of iNOS, IL-1ß, TNF-α, IL-6, and COX-2 by suppressing the activation of TLR4/NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways in RAW264.7 cells. Furthermore, FF could protect the Caco-2 cell epithelial barrier. CONCLUSION: FF could alleviate DSS-induced colitis in mice by maintaining the intestinal barrier, inhibiting the activation of TLR4/NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways, reducing the release of proinflammatory factors, and regulating intestinal microecology.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) poses a serious challenge to global health systems. The altered intestinal microbiota is associated with the pathogenesis of TB, but the exact links remain unclear. METHODS: 16 S rDNA sequencing was performed to comprehensively detect the changes in the intestinal microbiota of feces from active TB (ATB), latent TB infection (LTBI) and healthy controls (HC). RESULTS: The rarefaction curves demonstrated the sequencing results' validity. The alpha diversity was lowest in ATB, while highest in HC. Boxplot of beta diversity showed significant differences in every two groups. LDA Effect Size (LEfSe) Analysis revealed differences in probiotic bacteria like Romboutsia, Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus in LTBI, and pro-inflammatory bacteria like R. gnavus, Streptococcus and Erysipelatoclostridium in ATB, corresponding to the cluster analysis. PICRUST2 analysis revealed the pentose phosphate pathway was active in ATB and LTBI (more active in ATB). The differences between the groups are statistically significant at the P<0.05 level. CONCLUSION: Our study indicated that from LTBI to ATB, some intestinal microbiota inhibit the synthesis of interferon (INF)-γ and interleukin (IL)-17, promoting the survival and spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb). In addition, the metabolites secreted by intestinal microbiota and dysbiosis in intestine also have an effect on the development of LTBI to ATB.

Purpose: Distinguishing latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) from active tuberculosis (ATB) is important to control the prevalence of tuberculosis; however, there is currently no effective method. The aim of this study was to discover specific metabolites through fecal untargeted metabolomics to discriminate ATB, individuals with LTBI, and healthy controls (HC) and to probe the metabolic perturbation associated with the progression of tuberculosis. Patients and Methods: Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was performed to comprehensively detect compounds in fecal samples from HC, LTBI, and ATB patients. Differential metabolites between the two groups were screened, and their underlying biological functions were explored. Candidate metabolites were selected and enrolled in LASSO regression analysis to construct diagnostic signatures for discriminating between HC, LTBI, and ATB. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to evaluate diagnostic value. A nomogram was constructed to predict the risk of progression of LTBI. Results: A total of 35 metabolites were found to exist differentially in HC, LTBI, and ATB, and eight biomarkers were selected. Three diagnostic signatures based on the eight biomarkers were constructed to distinguish between HC, LTBI, and ATB, demonstrating excellent discrimination performance in ROC analysis. A nomogram was successfully constructed to evaluate the risk of progression of LTBI to ATB. Moreover, 3,4-dimethylbenzoic acid has been shown to distinguish ATB patients with different responses to etiological tests. Conclusion: This study constructed diagnostic signatures based on fecal metabolic biomarkers that effectively discriminated HC, LTBI, and ATB, and established a predictive model to evaluate the risk of progression of LTBI to ATB. The results provide scientific evidence for establishing an accurate, sensitive, and noninvasive differential diagnosis scheme for tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the difference of lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood (PB) between aplastic anemia (AA) and hypoplastic myelodysplastic syndrome (hypo-MDS) patients, meanwhile to compare the clinical parameters obtained from PB and bone marrow (BM). METHODS: The lymphocyte subsets in hypo-MDS (n=25) and AA (n=33) patients were investigated by flow cytometry. Meanwhile, the differences in PB cell counts, biochemical indicators, BM cell counts and abnormal chromosomes between the two groups were analyzed. RESULTS: The percentage of CD8+T cells in AA group was significantly higher than that in hypo-MDS group (P=0.001), while the percentage of CD4+ T cells and the CD4+/CD8+ ratio in AA group were obviously lower than those in hypo-MDS group (P=0.015 and 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, the proportion of CD4+ and CD8+ activated T (TA) cells, and memory Tregs in AA group was distinctly lower than those in hypo-MDS group (P=0.043, 0.015 and 0.024, respectively). Nevertheless, the percentage of CD8+ naive T (TN) cells in AA patients was remarkably higher (P=0.044). And hypo-MDS patients had declined lymphocyte counts (P=0.025), increased levels of total bilirubin (TBil), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), vitamin B12 and proportion of BM blasts than AA patients (P=0.019, 0.023, 0.027 and 0.045, respectively). CONCLUSION: In this study it was confirmed that the percentages of CD4+ and CD8+ TA cells, memory Tregs and CD8+ TN cells were significantly different between AA and hypo-MDS patients, which provide an essential basis for the identification of these two diseases.

A major active constituent of Moringa oleifera Lam. is 4-[(α-L-rhamnose oxy) benzyl] isothiocyanate (MITC). To broaden MITC's application and improve its biological activity, we synthesized a series of MITC quinazolinone derivatives and evaluated their anticancer activity. The anticancer effects and mechanisms of the compound with the most potent anticancer activity were investigated further. Among 16 MITC quinazolinone derivatives which were analyzed, MITC-12 significantly inhibited the growth of U251, A375, A431, HCT-116, HeLa, and MDA-MB-231 cells. MITC-12 significantly inhibited U251 cell proliferation in a time- and dose-dependent manner and decreased the number of EdU-positive cells, but was not toxic to normal human gastric mucosal cells (GES-1). Further, MITC-12 induced apoptosis of U251 cells, and increased caspase-3 expression levels and the Bax:Bcl-2 ratio. In addition, MITC-12 significantly decreased the proportion of U251 cells in the G1 phase and increased it in S and G2 phases. Transcriptome sequencing showed that MITC-12 had a significant regulatory effect on pathways regulating the cell cycle. Further, MITC-12 significantly decreased the expression levels of the cell cycle-related proteins CDK2, cyclinD1, and cyclinE, and increased those of cyclinA2, as well as the p-JNK:JNK ratio. These results indicate that MITC-12 inhibits U251 cell proliferation by inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest, activating JNK, and regulating cell cycle-associated proteins. MITC-12 has potential for use in the prevention and treatment of glioma.

OBJECTIVES: Multiple generations of medical robots have revolutionized surgery. Their application to dental implants is still in its infancy. Co-operating robots (cobots) have great potential to improve the accuracy of implant placement, overcoming the limitations of static and dynamic navigation. This study reports the accuracy of robot-assisted dental implant placement in a preclinical model and further applies the robotic system in a clinical case series. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In model analyses, the use of a lock-on structure at robot arm-handpiece was tested in resin arch models. In a clinical case series, patients with single missing teeth or edentulous arch were included. Robot-assisted implant placement was performed. Surgery time was recorded. Implant platform deviation, apex deviation, and angular deviation were measured. Factors influencing implant accuracy were analyzed. RESULTS: The in vitro results showed that with a lock-on structure, the mean (SD) of platform deviation, apex deviation, and angular deviation were 0.37 (0.14) mm, 0.44 (0.17) mm, and 0.75 (0.29)°, respectively. Twenty-one patients (28 implants) were included in the clinical case series, 2 with arches and 19 with single missing teeth. The median surgery time for single missing teeth was 23 (IQ range 20-25) min. The surgery time for the two edentulous arches was 47 and 70 min. The mean (SD) of platform deviation, apex deviation, and angular deviation was 0.54 (0.17) mm, 0.54 (0.11) mm, and 0.79 (0.22)° for single missing teeth and for 0.53 (0.17) mm, 0.58 (0.17) mm, and 0.77 (0.26)° for an edentulous arch. Implants placed in the mandible had significantly larger apex deviation than those in the maxilla. CONCLUSION: Cobot-assisted dental implant placement showed excellent positional accuracy and safety in both the in vitro study and the clinical case series. More technological development and clinical research are needed to support the introduction of robotic surgery in oral implantology. Trial registered in ChiCTR2100050885.

One of the most intriguing questions in eusocial insects is to understand how the overt reproductive conflict in the colony appears limited when queens or kings are senescent or lost because the morphologically similar individuals in the colony are reproductively totipotent. Whether there are some individuals who preferentially differentiate into replacement reproductives or not has received little attention. The consistent individual behavioral differences (also termed "animal personality") of individuals from the colony can shape cunningly their task and consequently affect the colony fitness but have been rarely investigated in eusocial insects. Here, we used the termite Reticulitermes labralis to investigate if variations in individual personalities (elusiveness and aggressiveness) may predict which individuals will perform reproductive differentiation within colonies. We observed that when we separately reared elusive and aggressive workers, elusive workers differentiate into reproductives significantly earlier than aggressive workers. When we reared them together in the proportions 12:3, 10:5, and 8:7 (aggressive workers: elusive workers), the first reproductives mostly differentiated from the elusive workers, and the reproductives differentiated from the elusive workers significantly earlier than from aggressive workers. Furthermore, we found that the number of workers participating in reproductive differentiation was significantly lower in the groups of both types of workers than in groups containing only elusive workers. Our results demonstrate that the elusiveness trait was a strong predictor of workers' differentiation into replacement reproductives in R. labralis. Moreover, our results suggest that individual personalities within the insect society could play a key role in resolving the overt reproductive conflict.

The hourly Himawari-8 version 3.1 (V31) aerosol product has been released and incorporates an updated Level 2 algorithm that uses forecast data as an a priori estimate. However, there has not been a thorough evaluation of V31 data across a full-disk scan, and V31 has yet to be applied in the analysis of its influence on surface solar radiation (SSR). This study firstly investigates the accuracy of V31 aerosol products, which includes three categories of aerosol optical depth (AOD) (AODMean, AODPure, and AODMerged) as well as the corresponding Ångström exponent (AE), using ground-based measurements from the AERONET and SKYNET. Results indicate that V31 AOD products are more consistent with ground-based measurements compared to previous products (V30). The highest correlation and lowest error were seen in the AODMerged, with a correlation coefficient of 0.8335 and minimal root mean square error of 0.1919. In contrast, the AEMerged shows a larger discrepancy with measurements unlike the AEMean and AEPure. Error analysis reveals that V31 AODMerged has generally stable accuracy across various ground types and geometrical observation angles, however, there are higher uncertainties in areas with high aerosol loading, particularly for fine aerosols. The temporal analysis shows that V31 AODMerged performs better compared to V30, particularly in the afternoon. Finally, the impacts of aerosols on SSR based on the V31 AODMerged are investigated through the development of a sophisticated SSR estimation algorithm in the clear sky. Results demonstrate that the estimated SSR is significant consistency with those of well-known CERES products, with preservation of 20 times higher spatial resolution. The spatial analysis reveals a significant reduction of AOD in the North China Plain before and during the COVID-19 outbreak, resulting in an average 24.57 W m-2 variation of the surface shortwave radiative forcing in clear sky daytime.

Purpose: The detection of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression status is essential to determining the chemotherapy regimen for breast cancer patients and to improving their prognosis. We developed a deep learning radiomics (DLR) model combining time-frequency domain features of ultrasound (US) video of breast lesions with clinical parameters for predicting HER2 expression status. Patients and Methods: Data for this research was obtained from 807 breast cancer patients who visited from February 2019 to July 2020. Ultimately, 445 patients were included in the study. Pre-operative breast ultrasound examination videos were collected and split into a training set and a test set. Building a training set of DLR models combining time-frequency domain features and clinical features of ultrasound video of breast lesions based on the training set data to predict HER2 expression status. Test the performance of the model using test set data. The final models integrated with different classifiers are compared, and the best performing model is finally selected. Results: The best diagnostic performance in predicting HER2 expression status is provided by an Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost)-based time-frequency domain feature classifier combined with a logistic regression (LR)-based clinical parameter classifier of clinical parameters combined DLR, particularly with a high specificity of 0.917. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for the test cohort was 0.810. Conclusion: Our study provides a non-invasive imaging biomarker to predict HER2 expression status in breast cancer patients.

This study examines a hierarchical vertex-based structure that improves the crashworthiness of the conventional multi-cell square, a biological hierarchy of natural origin with exceptional mechanical properties. The vertex-based hierarchical square structure (VHS) is explored for its geometric properties, including infinite repetition and self-similarity. The cut-and-patch method is used to derive an equation for the material thicknesses of different orders of the VHS based on the principle of the same weight. A thorough parametric study of VHS was conducted using LS-DYNA, which examined the effects of material thickness, orders, and various structural ratios. The results were evaluated based on common crashworthiness criteria and demonstrated that the total energy absorption (TEA), specific energy absorption (SEA), and mean crushing force (Pm) of VHS exhibited similar monotonicity concerning the orders. SEA of the first-order VHS with λ1=0.3 and the second-order VHS with λ1=0.3 and λ2=0.1 are improved by at most 59.9% and 102.4% respectively; the second-order VHS with 0.2≤λ1≤0.4 and 0.1≤λ2≤0.15 have the better overall performance of crashworthiness. Then, the half-wavelength equation of VHS and Pm of each fold was established based on the Super-Folding Element method. Meanwhile, a comparative analysis with the simulation results reveals three different out-of-plane deformation mechanisms of VHS. The study indicated that material thickness had a greater impact on crashworthiness. Finally, the comparison with conventional honeycombs demonstrated that VHS holds great promise as a structure for crashworthiness. These results provide a solid foundation for further research and development of new bionic energy-absorbing devices.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the preoperative influential factors of difficult thyroidectomy and establish a preoperative nomogram for predicting the difficulty of thyroidectomy. METHODS: A total of 753 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy with central lymph node dissection between January 2018 and December 2021 were retrospectively enrolled in this study and randomly divided into training and validation groups at a ratio of 8:2. In both subgroups, the patients were divided into difficult thyroidectomy and nondifficult thyroidectomy groups based on the operation time. Patient age, sex, body mass index (BMI), thyroid ultrasound, thyroid function, preoperative fine needle aspiration (FNA), postoperative complications and other data were collected. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the predictors of difficult thyroidectomy, and a nomogram predicting surgical difficulty was created. RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that male sex (OR = 2.138, 95% CI 1.055-4.336, p = 0.035), age (OR = 0.954, 95% CI 0.932-0.976, p < 0.001), BMI (OR = 1.233, 95% CI 1.106-1.375, p < 0.001), thyroid volume (OR = 1.177, 95% CI 1.104-1.254, p < 0.001) and TPO-Ab (OR = 1.001, 95% CI 1.001-1.002, p = 0.001) were independent risk factors for difficult thyroidectomy. The nomogram model incorporating the above predictors performed well in both the training and validation sets. A higher postoperative complication rate was found in the difficult thyroidectomy group than in the nondifficult thyroidectomy group. CONCLUSION: This study identified independent risk factors for difficult thyroidectomy and created a predictive nomogram for difficult thyroidectomy. This nomogram may help to objectively and individually predict surgical difficulty before surgery and provide optimal treatment.

Microbial contamination is one of the main reasons for the quality deterioration of postharvest blueberries during storage. In this study, we investigated the surface microbiota of blueberry fruits stored at different temperatures via high-throughput sequencing of the 16S and ITS rRNA genes. The results indicated that the α-diversity of the microbial communities in samples stored at 4 °C was much higher than that in samples stored at 25 °C. The composition of the bacterial and fungal communities on the surface of the blueberry fruits varied at different storage temperatures. Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Anthophyta, Chlorophyta, Proteobacteria, and Cyanobacteria were the most abundant phyla in the bacterial community. Furthermore, five preservation quality indices were measured, and the influence on the α-diversity of the bacterial community was found to be significantly weaker than that of the fungal community. Based on the prediction of the bacterial flora function, the change in blueberry quality during storage was closely related to its surface microbial effect. This study provides a theoretical basis for an understanding of the microbiota on the surface of blueberry fruits to cause fruit spoilage, and the development of a targeted inhibition technology to preserve blueberry fruits under different storage and transportation environments.

Blackberries provide multiple health benefits. However, they deteriorate easily during harvesting, storage, and transportation (temperature-changing). Therefore, to extend their shelf-life under variable temperature conditions, a temperature-sensitive nanofibre-based material with good preservation attributes was developed, composed of polylactic acid (PLA) electrospun fibres, loaded with lemon essential oil (LEO) and covered with poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm). Compared with PLA and PLA/LEO nanofibres, PLA/LEO/PNIPAAm exhibited good mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, antibacterial ability, and controlled release of LEO. The PNIPAAm layer prevented rapid LEO release below the low critical solution temperature (32 °C). When the temperature exceeded 32 °C, the PNIPAAm layer underwent a chain-to-globule transition and accelerated LEO release (slower than PLA/LEO). The temperature-controlled release of LEO via PLA/LEO/PNIPAAm membrane prolongs its action time. Therefore, PLA/LEO/PNIPAAm effectively maintained the appearance and nutritive quality of blackberries during variable storage temperatures. Our research demonstrated that active fibre membranes have great potential applications in preserving fresh products.

A copper-catalyzed oxidative cyclization of alkenyl N-propargyl ynamides is described. This protocol enables the practical synthesis of diverse spirocyclic γ-lactams bearing an exocyclic double bond with generally high Z/E selectivity in moderate to good yields. Importantly, this copper-catalyzed oxidative cyclization demonstrates a distinctive selectivity in comparison with the related gold catalysis.

The Clean Air Plan has been active in China since 2013 to mitigate severe PM2.5 pollution. In this study, we applied the air quality model WRF-Chem to simulate PM2.5 in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China in 2017, with the aim of assessing the air quality improvement and its associated health burden in the final year of the Clean Air Plan. To better describe the fate of various PM2.5 compositions, we updated the chemical mechanisms in the model beforehand, including heterogeneous sulfate reactions, aqueous secondary organic aerosol (SOA) uptake, and volatility basis set (VBS) based SOA production. Both the observation and simulation results agreed that the stringent clear air action effectively reduced the PM2.5 pollution levels by âˆ¼ 30 %. The primary PM2.5 (-6 âˆ¼  - 16 % yr-1) showed a more significant decreasing trend than the secondary PM2.5 (-2 âˆ¼  - 8 % yr-1), which was mainly caused by the directivity of the clear air actions and the worsening ozone pollution in the recent years. The inconsistent decreasing trends of PM2.5 components subsequently led to an increasing proportion of secondary PM2.5. Nitrate particles, higher in the central and western YRD region, have replaced sulfate and have become the largest component of secondary inorganic aerosols year-round, except in summer, when strong ammonium nitrate evaporation occurs. In addition, SOA remains an important component (21 âˆ¼ 22 %) especially in summer, most of which is produced from the oxidation and ageing of semi/intermediate volatile organic compounds (S/IVOC). Furthermore, we quantified the associated health impacts and found that the Clean Air Plan has largely reduced premature mortality due to PM2.5 exposure in the YRD region from 399.1 thousand to 295.7 thousand. Our study highlights the benefits of the Clean Air Plan and suggests that subsequent PM2.5 improvement should be geared more towards controlling secondary pollutants.
