INTRODUCTION: The tobacco gift-giving culture in China poses a significant challenge to public health; however, there is limited research on effectively curbing the tobacco gift-giving culture and its associated tobacco gift consumption. This study examines the potential impact of two tobacco control measures that the Chinese government may consider adopting on cigarette gifting behavior in the future in Chinese society. METHODS: This study employed a randomized survey experiment to examine the effects of cigarette price treatment and pictorial health warning labels (HWLs) on cigarette gifting. The total sample size of this study is 1035. Four groups of participants were presented with representative cigarettes categorized into high-, medium-, and low-priced products, along with different prices (normal and double) or external packaging imagery (normal and pictorial HWL versions). RESULTS: The price of cigarettes for personal consumption forms an L-shaped distribution, and the price of cigarette gifts forms a W-shaped distribution. Increasing cigarette prices reduces smokers' willingness to gift high-priced cigarettes but stimulates the consumption of low-price cigarettes as gifts. Pictorial HWLs do not directly influence smokers' intentions to gift cigarettes, but they enhance the effectiveness of price regulation concerning medium-priced cigarette products. CONCLUSIONS: If the price variance of cigarettes is not reduced, the effect of price regulation will be very limited. Implementing combined interventions of pictorial HWLs and price regulation or modifying the pricing structure of tobacco products may yield stronger control outcomes.

People may experience media vicarious traumatization due to frequent exposure to media coverage of disasters. Currently, the influential relationship between personality traits and media vicarious traumatization still lacks systematic and in-depth research. Based on the MU5735 airplane crash, this study explored the effects of configurations of personality traits on media vicarious traumatization by analyzing data from 331 Chinese university students (Mage = 22.63 years, SD = 2.67, range = 18 to 29, n = 186 male and n = 145 female) using Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). The results revealed that five combinations of the Big Five personality traits could lead to media vicarious traumatization, the combinations of configurations are: (1) high conscientiousness, high agreeableness, and high neuroticism; (2) high conscientiousness, high extraversion, and high agreeableness; (3) high extraversion, high neuroticism, low conscientiousness, and low agreeableness; (4) high openness, high extraversion, high agreeableness, and high neuroticism; (5) high extraversion, high agreeableness, low openness, and low neuroticism. Furthermore, sociodemographic variables (gender, age, and education) interacted with personality traits and also resulted in different configurations of media vicarious traumatization. This study indicates the asymmetric relationships between personality traits and media vicarious traumatization, identifies the vulnerable groups to facilitate targeted trauma interventions for university students according to different configurations, and provides a reference for public psychological relief efforts in emergencies.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the additional significance of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) beyond collaterals in determining the clinical outcome after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed large vessel-involved stroke patients who had baseline CTA within 24 h after symptom onset and had an MRI scan 5 days after admission from October 1, 2018, to October 31, 2021. Collaterals and SVD markers (including atrophy, leukoaraiosis, lacunes, and perivascular space) were graded on CT angiography and MR images, respectively. Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score at 90 days was recorded, and mRS ≤ 2 was regarded as a good clinical outcome. The associations between SVD markers, collaterals, and mRS were analyzed using logistic and causal mediation regression. RESULTS: We finally enrolled 119 patients (70 ± 13 years). The multivariable regression showed atrophy (evidence: OR 0.05 [95% CI 0.01-0.31], p = 0.002; severe: OR 0.08 [95% CI 0.01-0.44], p = 0.007) and evidence of lacune (OR 0.30 [95% CI 0.08-0.96], p = 0.049) were associated with poor clinical outcomes after correcting covariables. Collaterals mediated 25.74% of the effect of atrophy on poor clinical outcomes (p < 0.001), while lacune impacted clinical outcomes without collaterals' mediation effect (p = 0.54). The classification model with atrophy and lacune had a significantly higher AUC than without markers to distinguish good and poor outcomes (p = 0.036). CONCLUSIONS: Beyond collaterals, brain frailty, specifically assessed by atrophy and lacune, was essential in evaluating stroke patients and could additionally improve the stroke outcome prediction. KEY POINTS: • Beyond collaterals, brain frailty, specifically assessed by brain atrophy and lacune, was still an independent risk factor of unfavorable clinical outcomes after AIS. • Adding brain atrophy and lacune into the model has an extra benefit in predicting stroke outcomes. • The effect of atrophy on stroke outcomes was proportionally mediated through collaterals, but about three-quarters of the effect of brain atrophy and the total effect of lacune directly impacted stroke outcomes without a mediation effect of collaterals.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common chronic joint disease with serious health economic burden. More and more randomized controlled trials have indicated that traditional Chinese non-pharmacological therapy, including acupuncture, Tai Chi, Tuina, etc can significantly improve pain and physical function of patients with KOA. However, the effects of traditional Chinese non-pharmacological therapy for KOA remain controversial. Most previous systematic reviews did not focus on the effects of traditional Chinese non-pharmacological therapy for KOA as a whole. In Chinese community hospital, however, acupuncture, Tuina, and Tai Chi are usually in the management of KOA as whole-body treatment. METHODS: The electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, and Wanfang Data) will be searched. The search will include all documents from their inception to December 2021. Two reviewers independently extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias by the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for randomized controlled trials. The meta-analysis will be conducted with a random or fixed effect model to calculate the standardized mean difference and 95% confidence intervals based on different heterogeneity using the Review Manager Version 5.3 software. The heterogeneity will be examined by Higgins I2 statistic. The subgroup analysis will be conducted based on different types of traditional Chinese non-pharmacological therapy and different outcomes. Quality of evidence will be assessed using the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation. RESULTS: The current systematic review and meta-analysis will be conducted to investigate the effects of traditional Chinese non-pharmacological therapy in the management of KOA. The main outcomes will include pain and disability. The secondary outcomes will include quality of life and adverse events. CONCLUSION: To provide evidence for evidence-based medicine and clinical researchers to choose more effective traditional Chinese non-pharmacological therapy for KOA. The current study investigated the role of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in repairing senile bone marrow injury and the underlying mechanism. Adenoviral vectors expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) were used to label MSCs. The level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) were detected by thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and xanthine oxidation (XTO) methods. The proportions of CD34, CD3+ cells, cell proliferation and apoptosis were determined by flow cytometry, Cell counting kit (CCK)-8 and comet assay. Tissues were stained by haematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and their changes were observed under a transmission electron microscopy. Expression levels of age-related and autophagy-related genes were detected by RT-qPCR and Western Blot. MSCs were successfully implanted into the bone marrow of aging rats. We found that the SOD activity was increased and MDA content was reduced in MSCs group. The proportions of CD34 cells were significantly more in the MSCs group than those in the Model group, and bone marrow cell colony formation and cell viability were both greatly increased in MSCs group. The proportions of CD3+ cells and level of Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were increased significantly, while IL-6 level was reduced greatly in MSCs group. Moreover, the bone marrow tissues of the model group were severely damaged, but those of the MSCs group were significantly improved. In addition, MSCs were involved in regulation of aging-related genes and autophagy-related genes. In conclusion, our findings showed that MSCs can repair bone marrow damage in aging rats, and regulate aging- and autophagy-related genes and immune response. SIGNIFICANCE: This study investigated the role of MSCs in the repair of senile bone marrow injury and the underlying mechanism. The effects of MSCs on physiological and biochemical indicators, cell function, tissue structure differences and pathological changes in aging rats were studied. It was found that MSCs can repair bone marrow damage in aging rats. MSCs regulate aging and autophagy-related genes and its involvement in immune response. Our findings improve the understandings on the regulatory mechanism of MSCs and provide key evidence for the study of MSCs in bone marrow repair.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of internal fixation with absorbable pins on treatment of displaced radial head fractures. METHODS: From May 1999 to May 2004, 16 patients with displaced radial head fractures (Mason types II and III) were treated with internal fixation by absorbable pins. The duration of follow-up averaged 22.6 months (12-58 months). The outcome was assessed on the basis of elbow motion, radiographic findings and the functional rating score delineated by Broberg and Morrey. RESULTS: All fractures healed within 10 months without avascular necrosis of radial head. The mean elbow flexion loss was 15 degrees (0 degrees-35 degrees), and pronation and supination decreased by 10 degrees (0 degrees-30 degrees) on average compared with those of the contralateral elbow. Five patients had an excellent result, 6 a good result, and 3 a fair result according to the criteria of Borberg and Morrey. CONCLUSIONS: Internal fixation with absorbable pins is an effective method in treating displaced radial head fractures. It can maintain the biomechanical stability of forearm, improve the elbow function and avoid second operation.
