RESUMO

Fluorescence characteristics of hemicyanine dye molecules isolated from neighboring molecules and strongly restricted inside nanosized pores of zeolite (silicalite-1) crystal were investigated. For samples in which the molecules were sufficiently far away from the others, the fluorescence decay lifetime of the molecules was about 2.2 ns. As the intermolecular distance was reduced, the steady-state fluorescence peak shifted toward the longer wavelength and the fluorescence efficiency decreased markedly. The fluorescence decay lifetime also decreased to 0.8 ns for a sample with the smallest intermolecular distance of 2.1 nm. These results were explained in terms of a dipole-dipole interaction between pairs of dye molecules. From the relation between the intermolecular distances and the fluorescence decay lifetimes of the molecules, the radius of energy transfer of hemicyanine donor-acceptor pair in zeolite matrix was determined to be 2.2 nm, in fair agreement with the calculated Förster radius between dye molecules of the same species.

RESUMO

The enhanced nanometer-scale photoluminescence (PL) and quantum yield of hybrid double layered nanotubes (HDLNTs) consisting of a light-emitting poly(3-methylthiophene) (P3MT) nanotube coated with nanometer-scale copper (Cu) metal were observed and presented. The HDLNTs of the Cu coated P3MT (P3MT/Cu) were synthesized through a sequential electrochemical synthetic method in an anodic alumina oxide (Al2O3) nanoporous template. We confirmed that the Cu nanotubes were covered outside the light emitting P3MT nanotubes based a high resolution transmission electron microscope image. From laser confocal microscope (LCM) PL experiments of an isolated single strand of the P3MT nanotubes and of their HDLNTs, we observed a -100 times enhancement of the PL peak intensity for the HDLNTs of P3MT/Cu compared to that of the P3MT single nanotube, which was qualitatively confirmed through the measurement of the quantum yield. The energy and/or charge transfer effects in surface plasmon resonance contributed to the larger enhancement of the PL efficiency of the hybrid P3MT/Cu nanotubes. The PL decay life-time of the excitons of the P3MT nanotubes using a time resolved PL was not changed after the formation of the HDLNTs, implying that the PL enhancement of the hybrid nanotubes might have originated from fluorescence, not phosphorescence.

RESUMO

A unidirectional ensemble of hemicyanine molecules was prepared by inserting the molecules into the vertical channels of a uniformly oriented zeolite (silicalite-1) film grown on a glass substrate. Fluorescence from this sample excited with light polarized along the vertical channel was 50 times larger than that excited with light polarized orthogonal to the vertical channel direction. These vertically aligned hemicyanine dyes were used to determine the ratio of the molecular hyperpolarizability components beta(zxx)/beta(zzz) of hemicyanine.
