RESUMO

Electrocatalysts facilitating oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are vital components in advanced fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Here we report Ketjenblack incorporated nitrogen-doped carbon sheets derived from gelatin and apply these easily scalable materials as metal-free electrocatalysts for ORR. These carbon nanosheets demonstrate highly comparable catalytic activity for ORR as well as better durability than commercial Vulcan carbon supported Pt catalysts in alkaline media. Physico-chemical characterization and theoretical calculations suggest that proper combination of graphitic and pyridinic nitrogen species with more exposed edge sites effectively facilitates a formation of superoxide, [O2(ad)](-), via one-electron transfer, thus increasing catalytic activities for ORR. Our results demonstrate a novel strategy to expose more nitrogen doped edge sites by irregular stacked small sheets in developing better electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries. These desirable architectures are embodied by an amphiphlilic gelatin mediated compatible synthetic strategy between hydrophobic carbon and aqueous water.

RESUMO

Toxigenic Staphylococcus aureus contamination in ready-to-eat (RTE) food is a leading cause of foodborne illness in Korea. To monitor food contamination by S. aureus, a total of 3332 RTE food samples were selected from nationwide wholesale marts between 2003 and 2004 and examined. A total of 285 (8.6%) of the overall samples were contaminated by S. aureus. According to the analysis, 31.6% of the tested cream-cakes, 19.8% of the raw fish, and 19.3% of the rice cakes with filling were contaminated with S. aureus. Forty-seven percent of the strains isolated from the contaminated food were enterotoxigenic S. aureus. The phenotypic result of the strain isolated from food showed that 48% of the strains produced one or more toxins, such as staphylococcal enterotoxins A, B, and C (SEA, SEB, and SEC). At least one SEA was produced by over 90% of the toxigenic strains. Other toxins, such as SEB, SEC, SED, SEA+SEC, and SEC+SED, were each detected. Toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1), a causative agent of toxic shock syndrome, was detected in 13 strains of the toxigenic isolates from the food. As the result of genotyping, 22 strains with a toxin gene that was not detected in the phenotypic analysis were also detected. Sixty-nine percent of the toxigenic strains had at least one sea gene, and the most prevalent genotype was sea+seh (34.4%), followed by sea (18.8%) and sea+seg+sei (15.6%). The tst gene encoding TSST-1 was found in 13 strains (13.5%). The genes (eta and etb) encoding exfoliative toxins A and B were not detected in any of the samples.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the cell proliferation rate of normal corneal epithelium with extended orthokeratology lens (OKL) wear in comparison with extended rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lens wear. METHODS: Twenty-four rabbits were fitted unilaterally with either an OKL or an RGP lens, and the other eye was used as a control. They were injected with 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU) 24 h prior to being sacrificed. The rabbits were sacrificed at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days after lens fitting. The cornea from the superior limbus to the center was taken at 1.0-mm intervals. The BrdU-labeled cells were counted in medium power fields (x200) in each sample using light microscopy. RESULTS: The number of BrdU-labeled cells in the RGP lens group initially increased, but the number decreased in the corneal center and superior limbus by 32 and 8%, respectively, after 14 days. There was no statistically significant change. However, the number of BrdU-labeled cells in the OKL group decreased after 3 days, and the number of BrdU-labeled cells was reduced in the center and superior limbus by 63 and 8%, respectively, after 14 days. The change in proliferation in the corneal center in the OKL-wearing rabbits was statistically significant compared to the control (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Wearing an OKL had a greater effect on the change of the proliferation pattern in the epithelium than wearing an RGP lens, which suggests that the OKL might be less physiologic than the RGP lens is.

RESUMO

We evaluated the change of corneal endothelium after trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C soaking (0.2 mg/ml, 2.4 +/- 1.2 minutes) and the effect of viscoelastic material in reducing this change. In randomly selected cases, 0.05 ml of sodium hyaluronate(Healon) was injected into anterior chamber (Healon group, n = 20), and same amount of balanced salt solution was injected in the other eyes (Control, n = 18) at the beginning of surgery. There were no differences in clinical variables and specular microscopy result between 2 groups before surgery. After surgery, the change of endothelial cells were significantly reduced in Healon group (cell density; -2.5 +/- 1.6%, variability of cell area; 5.8 +/- 2.5%, and percentage of hexagonal cell; -2.2 +/- 0.7%) compared to control group (-7.7 +/- 6.0%, 8.9 +/- 4.4%, and -4.8 +/- 3.5% respectively, p < 0.01). In trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C, the damage to the corneal endothelium was reduced significantly by injecting the viscoelastic material without significant complication.
