RESUMO

Nanostructures exhibit a bactericidal effect owing to physical interaction with the bacterial cell envelope. Here, we aimed to identify the mechanism underlying the bactericidal effect of nanostructures based on bacterial autolysis, in contrast to previous reports focusing on structural characteristics. The time profiles of active cell ratios of the Escherichia coli strains (WT, ΔmltA, ΔmltB, Δslt70), incubation time of the wild-type (WT) strains, and autolysis inhibition of WT strains were evaluated with respect to the bactericidal effect of the applied nanostructures. Addition of Mg2+, an autolysis inhibitor, was not found to cause significant cell damage. The incubation phase was significantly associated with envelope damage. The lytic transglycosylase-lacking strain of Slt70 (Δslt70) also showed only minimal envelope damage. Our results indicate that nanostructures may act by triggering bacterial autolysis.

RESUMO

Different nanostructured surfaces have bactericidal properties that arise from the interaction between the bacteria and the nanostructured surface. In this study, we focused on the relationship between bacterial motility and bactericidal properties. The motility of Escherichia coli (E. coli) was tuned by genetic engineering, and four types of E. coli (wild type (WT), lacking flagella, and flagellated with deficient motility or deficient chemotaxis) were used to evaluate the adhesion and bactericidal properties of nanostructured surfaces. Cicada (Cryptotympana facialis) wings and Si nano-pillar array substrates were used as natural and artificial nanostructured surfaces, respectively. Differences in motility and chemotaxis strongly influenced the adhesion behavior and to some extent, the damage to the cell membrane. These results suggest that the bactericidal properties of nanostructured surfaces depend on bacterial motility.

RESUMO

Sulfur is a promising material for next-generation cathodes, owing to its high energy and low cost. However, sulfur cathodes have the disadvantage of serious cyclability issues due to the dissolution of polysulfides that form as intermediate products during discharge/charge cycling. Filling sulfur into the micropores of porous carbon is an effective method to suppress its dissolution. Although microporous carbon-supported sulfur cathodes show an electrochemical behavior different from that of the conventional sulfur ones, the corresponding reaction mechanism is not clearly understood. In this study, we focused on clarifying the reaction mechanism of microporous carbon-supported sulfur cathodes by operando soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In the microporous carbon support, sulfur was present as smaller fragments compared to conventional sulfur. During the first discharge process, the sulfur species in the microporous carbon were initially reduced to S6 2- and S2 2- and then to Li2S. The S6 2- and S2 2- species were observed first, with S2 2- being the main polysulfide species during the discharge process, while Li2S was produced in the final discharge process. The narrow pores of microporous carbon prevent the dissolution of polysulfides and influence the reaction mechanism of sulfur cathodes.

RESUMO

An angle-resolved linearly polarized hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) system has been developed to study the ground-state symmetry of strongly correlated materials. The linear polarization of the incoming X-ray beam is switched by a transmission-type phase retarder composed of two diamond (100) crystals. The best value of the degree of linear polarization was found to be -0.96, containing a vertical polarization component of 98%. A newly developed low-temperature two-axis manipulator enables easy polar and azimuthal rotations to select the detection direction of photoelectrons. The lowest temperature achieved was 9 K, offering the chance to access the ground state even for strongly correlated electron systems in cubic symmetry. A co-axial sample monitoring system with long-working-distance microscope enables the same region on the sample surface to be measured before and after rotation. Combining this sample monitoring system with a micro-focused X-ray beam by means of an ellipsoidal Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror (25 µm × 25 µm FWHM), polarized valence-band HAXPES has been performed on NiO for voltage application as resistive random access memory to demonstrate the micro-positioning technique and polarization switching.

RESUMO

Divalent DNA-AuNP (gold nanoparticle) conjugates comprising two DNA strands at diametrically opposed positions are prepared. Highly linear 1D and tetragonal lattice-like 2D AuNP arrays are constructed using the conjugates and DNA assemblies based on T- and double-crossover motifs and the Holliday junction.

RESUMO

Vertically aligned epitaxial Ge/Si heterostructure nanowire arrays on Si(100) substrates were prepared by a two-step chemical vapor deposition method in anodic aluminum oxide templates. n-Butylgermane vapor was employed as new safer precursor for Ge nanowire growth instead of germane. First a Si nanowire was grown by the vapor liquid solid growth mechanism using Au as catalyst and silane. The second step was the growth of Ge nanowires on top of the Si nanowires. The method presented will allow preparing epitaxially grown vertical heterostructure nanowires consisting of multiple materials on an arbitrary substrate avoiding undesired lateral growth.

RESUMO

The effects of the surface pressure on the particle arrangement of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of alkanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles were studied. The LB monolayers were prepared from a highly concentrated particle solution, which increases film fabrication efficiency but readily causes small particle voids in the particle array. Overcompressing the LB monolayer to a high surface pressure restructured the particles and eliminated the voids. When the gold particles capped by dodecanethiol were 8.5 nm in diameter, the particle arrangement was vastly improved and a wafer-scale LB monolayer was transferred onto a substrate at the surface pressure of 20 mN/m.
