IgM, IgG antibodies to herpes simplex virus and their subclases were investigated in 565 subjects of different age tested at virological laboratories of St. Petersburg in 1996-1997. The majority of these subjects had a history of herpes infection and 21.5% had IgM antibodies to herpes simplex virus (HSV), marker of acute herpetic infection. Besides IgM, IgG1 antibodies can be referred to early antibodies appearing during the acute stage of herpetic infection. The predominant subclass was HSV IgG3 antibodies. As for IgG4, they were completely absent in infants aged under 1 year, were detected in 6.2% children aged under 14 years, and were present in 12.2-12.5% adults.

Studies of natural population variability of parainfluenza viruses during their epidemic circulation.

The population of circulating serotype 3 parainfluenza virus strains isolated in different years proved to be sufficiently polymorphic concerning its antigenic and biological features as well as their virulence for newborn hamsters. The highly virulent strain population appeared to have an antigenic pattern different from that of the prototype strain. The epidemic caused by it in groups of school and preschool children was more intensive as compared to that induced by avirulent strains population.

The pathomorphological and virological study of peculiar features of parainfluenza infection caused by intranasal, aerosol and oral administration of the virus was carried out. The most marked lesions in the respiratory tract were observed in hamsters infected by the intranasal route, whereas with other routes of infection the intensity of lesions was minimal. Such differences in the pathomorphological manifestations of the process are most probably due to uneven distribution of the virus in the respiratory organs and to peculiar features of the immunological response of the animals.
